There’s an ice storm in Montreal, the biggest one in years! How much doomsday prepping do you actually do?
Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
This feels really weird. I don't know if you have the exact same feeling Sebastian, but I kind of feel like when I was a kid. When I was like 11, 12 years old and you knew there's going to be like a huge no storm and all the adults freaking out, but all the kids were so happy.
Because it meant no school, it meant a day off and it just meant that it was just going to be a special day and I feel like today is one of those absolutely welcome to a brand new episode of Men of the Alley.
It's Patrick and Sebastian on Idobi Radio for a brand new episode of Men of the Alley. Let's give the people some context here.
Yes, because it's pretty important. The show airs at 8 p.m. on Idobi Radio and we try to stay as close to that as possible, right?
Often times we're alive at 8 p.m. and sometimes well because of Sebastian's travels with simple plan, we need to change the schedule a little bit and yesterday we kind of had an emergency meeting because right now in Montreal on the east coast of Canada, everyone is freaking out.
Literally, you cannot open the newspapers, open the radio. Everyone is talking about this ginormous ice storm that is coming and looming with this ice storm is the very real possibility of a bunch of power outages.
That's the thing. So that's why we had to get on Mike this morning. So Wednesday morning and it started. There's ice outside. The cars are already covered. The trees are starting to get there. It's slippery.
And we're kind of just like bacon sure we get through this episode without the lights turning off.
And already it's been a weird morning because you know, I was talking about that excitement when you're a kid when you know that you're going to have a day off.
So yesterday all the schools announced preemptively that they're all going to be closed, right?
Buses aren't going out on the road. We're not going to risk everyone's safety.
I think that's the main thing, right? That's the main reason why schools would close is because of the buses, the kids that take the bus to school.
Because I think I think like most of the private school that don't offer bus services might be open. And there's going to be they're just they're just they're just good.
Are they all close today? What's going on? Do you know this? I from from when I know everything's closed. So both my kids at school.
My wife is a teacher. So everyone's off. And so in this kind of like excitement of like, yo, storm Wednesday.
My daughter last night was like, can I have a sleepover? And I was like, sure. And now you see this thing behind me.
Well, most of you can't, but Sebastian can. Yeah. What is that? What does that look like to you? That looks like a big, big dresser.
But I believe it's one of your nifty crafty Murphy beds. That's right. And so there's a bed in my studio. But it usually looks like a dresser.
And once in a while, if we have guests, well, it turns into a little bit of a guest room. It's not the best guest room in the world, but that's how we like it.
You know, don't get too comfortable. You can stay over, but you're not sticking around all that long.
And so it woke up and and juju and her girlfriend. They were in here and I was like, hey, no, no, no, no, get the mozion out of here.
And so I had to kick them out very quickly so that we could. So we you're going with this. And it's funny.
I did as most people do at woke up. And first thing I did is go scroll the Instagram.
And it's funny because it's a weird feeling of like everyone being home. And because of the power outages, my wife last night was like, you should probably go buy some food, just like things that we can do without power.
Just in case. Yeah. And I was like, oh, yeah, oh, yeah. That's a good point. And so it felt a little bit like like pre-dooms day.
And then I wake up and I see that literally exactly six years ago, March 11th, 2020 is when we declared the pandemic.
Oh, no way. Yeah. Like to the tea, right? And I was like, yeah, it's funny. I mean, obviously completely different contacts, but it kind of feels the same thing.
Like having the kids in the morning and just like everyone, I don't know, there's something, right? There's something in the air when you get these storms.
And contrary to like a snowstorm where you would get a snow, they were everybody would be outside playing, sledding, building forts and snowmen.
And now it's like it kind of like don't go outside, stay in your house, type of deal. And I remember it was at this point, I think three years ago, because the last ice storm that we got was 23.
And we were out of power and we came over to your house for a sleepover.
And if it happens again, you're more than welcome.
You see that thing behind me? Yeah. Well, you guys can't see it, but Sebastian can. What does that look like to you?
And in a twisted turn of events, in a twisted turn of events, as soon as we're done with this show, this had nothing to do with this specific ice storm.
We're just like the general concept of that.
There's a team of a very specialized electricians that are coming over to install batteries at my house for that specific purpose.
For power out of purposes. So like these people are coming over about an hour.
Like a generator?
Yeah, but like it's basically a battery. So your house is connected to battery and you manage it as you would your phone battery.
So if I turn everything on, it'll last a day. If I don't turn anything on, it can last many days.
So I'm getting that installed like basically, yeah, in the next hour.
So hopefully those batteries come slightly charged.
Just like when you get a new phone, it's like might be at 60%.
So I'm kind of hoping for that.
And they haven't canceled on you yet. They have not.
So everything's been canceled. Like everything that's been in my life on this Wednesday is canceled.
It's like, no, we're not doing, not doing anything.
Ice storm, ice storm, ice storm.
Yeah, so they have not canceled.
Now mind you, I'm talking to you right now. My phone's on silent.
They might be calling me repeatedly right now as we speak.
Try and cancel.
But and if they do, what am I going to do?
Tell them to come away.
It's like riddle me this. There's a difference then between a generator and this like battery that you're installing.
Yes, generator generates power.
Yeah.
Am I right?
Yes.
Okay.
So basically these batteries are just, they're, let's say that they're an empty battery.
You plug them to your house system.
Yes.
And so, you know, here we have Hydro Quebec.
And so the power company powers it like it would, you know, power your laptop.
And then you just have like X amount of hours of juice.
It's exactly the laptop is the perfect analogy.
When your laptop's plugged in, it's plugged in.
As soon as you unplug it, it doesn't turn off.
It keeps going until the battery dies.
And that's it.
Yeah.
So basically I would, I'm connecting little less than half of my house to it because you don't need your water heater.
I don't need my oven to keep going.
I'm not going to do a lot of laundry while the power is out.
So I'm sort of, I'm going to have to manage my own battery my own way.
But that's sort of what it is.
So as soon as the, as soon as the power goes out, like there's no glitch, it just keeps running on the battery.
And then this is cheaper than a generator I take it.
Probably not.
But if, let's say you're on vacation, you would have to get your, nope, sorry.
My cat keeps playing with my phone.
Yeah.
So that's, you know what?
That's great radio for you.
Specifically said, I specifically said there should be a no cat episode.
There's, there's not that I can do.
They go where the fun is.
And obviously this episode is already super fun.
So basically, basically, you kind of just have to manage your own thing.
So no, probably no, no drawing, no oven going as the power.
Like you kind of do it the right way to make sure that your battery lasts as long as you can.
As you would, if you, if you're on vacation and you're like, oh man, my phone is dying.
You're not suddenly going to start editing movies on your phone.
Right.
Yeah.
Sure.
You're going to put it on battery saver mode.
Interesting.
Are you, this was done like preemptively, right?
Like you know that there was a nice storm coming.
This was just already planned.
Are you someone who gets into a bit of like freaking out mode?
Like this week, I almost bought a generator.
Okay.
Because everyone was talking about this ice storm.
And my logic was this, I started like shopping them around.
And I was like, how about how about I do this?
If there's a nice storm or there is, but if the ice storm has a bunch of power outages left
and right, people are going to be jumping at these generators.
Yes.
So I looked at the like hardware store by my house.
And there was one on sale.
And there's like one left in stock.
And I was like, why don't I just go buy it?
And if I don't need it, I'll return it.
And if I do need it, then I'll have it.
And then my wife called me like a Doomsday Crazy Man.
Yeah, it's the prepper instinct, right?
Yeah.
And so I was like, yeah, okay, maybe not.
And then actually the reason I didn't go the real reason is that there's a pretty hefty ice storm over the holidays here where we live.
Yes.
And so some of the experts were saying we just got a nice storm.
A lot of the more fragile branches and trees have already been like broken and cut off.
Like the December ice storm kind of like cleaned out a lot of a lot of the crap that causes power outages, right?
Yes.
Because most often it's a branch falling on a circuit.
Yeah.
Power line, thank you.
And he's like, and plus at this time of year, there's no leaves yet in the trees.
There's no snow on the trees.
And so, you know, sure, you know, icy rain is heavy.
But not as heavy as if they're released, for example, right?
Like you can get a nice storm in November.
And there's still a bunch of leaves on the trees.
And it always makes it a lot heavier.
And I was like, okay, you know what?
I'm not going to go crazy.
I'm not going to go by a generator.
But are you one that kind of goes like Kuku?
Like we need to prep for this.
Like I've got ramen in the basement for three weeks.
Not at all.
So the freezers, because there's a downstairs freezer and the regular freezers at my house, they're kind of always full.
So there is food to be eaten.
I will.
I got back from Disney last night, but riddle me this.
This is freezer food, and you're in a house with no electricity.
How do you barbecue?
No, no, no.
Okay.
So my stove top is gas powered.
So that's like see that's a click away from just warming everything up here.
Yeah.
Lifestyles.
Yeah, that's it.
Yeah.
I'm so sorry.
But I got back from Disney last night.
People are so stupid.
People are like, oh, there's a power outage.
What do I do?
Seb's like, just use your gas.
Gas too.
Or go to your second house.
I still have that cottage.
Obviously it's going to be very dangerous to get on the roads.
But I could go to the cottage if the power outage lasted my battery is empty.
But all that to say that I did get back from Disney last night.
Yes.
We were away for four days.
So there's like no like people would say there's no food in the fridge.
Like there's no veggies.
There's no leftover fruit.
Like we're kind of out of that stuff.
And you didn't go yesterday in preparation for the.
I did not.
But I'm going to have to go.
I think it's open.
Yeah.
It's open.
Everything's canceled.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, we'll just see what happens.
Listen, you touched on it.
And obviously this was going to be an episode where I wanted you to do a little bit of a recap on this Disney adventure of yours.
And so let's get into some music.
And after I want to hear everything.
How is Mickey?
It was Donald Naughty again.
I want to hear the whole shabang.
Beautiful.
Okay.
So this one is Royals.
Talk about it.
And it's right here on Man of the Hour.
And I don't be radio.
You say you want to talk about it.
Yes, we'll go another round.
You're the reason.
All we do is scream and shout.
I miss the warning signs.
Thought that it felt right there.
Oh.
Oh.
You won't talk about it now.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
I kind of felt like yesterday you were blowing up my phone.
You won't admit that you were wrong.
I've heard it all before.
Keep going on and on.
You never let things go.
The last word is all you want.
You're the first to let me know.
I'm always wrong.
You say you want to talk about it.
Yes, we'll go another round.
You're the reason.
All we do is scream and shout.
I miss the warning signs.
Thought that it felt right there.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
You won't talk about it now.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
TheAlmodes Advisor,
Oh.
I want to go give another day at each other's throat.
But walking on excels are you give me a monetize.
If this goes on and on.
The cracks will start to show.
I've got a choice.
The name is it's time to let this go.
You're always wrong.
You say you want to talk about it.
Yes, we'll go a round.
You're the reason.
You scream and shout, I miss the warning signs
Like that in self, right in the open world
You won't talk about it, so you will have to say
Put you in hell, but I'll bring it into town now
I don't know how long I can keep up with this
If you keep going on and on and on
Don't fall in, fall in, fall in love
It goes on, fall in, fall in, fall in love
It goes on, fall in, fall in love
Listen to this and suffer
But it's a complaint? You say you wanna
I talk about it, guess we're going on around
You're the reason, oh we do you scream and shout
I miss the world inside
I thought that it felt right
But now, oh, oh, oh, oh
But you take the water
And talk about it inside
Just to go in there
You're the reason
All you do is scream and shout
I miss the world inside
I thought that it felt right
But now, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
You won't talk about it
Man of the hour
You're listening to the man of the hour
With Patrick and Sebastian
Live every Wednesday evening at 8 a.m.
With replays all week
And listen on demand
With the IDOBIOS app
It's men of the hour on IDOBI radio
With Patrick and Sebastian and I swear
Dude, stop staring Sebastian
You can just ask
Yes, this is Kashmir
Yes, it's super comfortable
And yes, it's elevating my style
Quite a bit
I don't know why you're just not
We're friends
You can, these are questions
We can ask each other
Don't worry about it
I saw you did the 90s thing
That is pretty sweet
You know what?
It's funny
You probably saw this trend this week
It was like all these 90s TV stars
Doing like
This trend called
Hey, dad, how were you in the 90s
And then you would see that text on the screen
And then you would see
Them from back in the day
And it was all these 90s stars
People from Full House
And people from
Home Improvement
And people from 90210
And I was like
Well, I'm not a
I'm not a
I'm a 90s star
But you were alive in the 90s
Yes, that's a good point
But I just didn't want to jump on a trend
Like imagine if it's like
All professional hockey players
They're gonna trend
And I'm like
Yep, I'm in
What up
Who is this guy?
But then I started seeing
Just normal people do it
And I was like
Oh, you know what?
It just, honestly
It peaked my curiosity
As to like which 90s pictures
I had in my phone
Right?
I didn't go on a scavenger hunt
Like going back into old albums
And I had a fair amount
And I was like
Okay, I could do this
This is kind of cool
And so these trends are always like a fun little exercise
I find
And so I did it
It was awesome
You know, it's very, very weird
Because I have such a documented life starting
When you joined the crew
And the band
And all of that
When you joined our outourage
And I don't know if it's because
I may have a little
Something to do with that
Of course
But like prior to that
And I don't know if it's because
Myself included
And all my friends
Nobody had money, nobody had
Money to buy cameras
Or if our parents
Because were divorced
Like everybody kind of lived in the moment
But unless we were on vacation
There's like hardly any pictures of me
And this was sort of a
Not an issue
But it was kind of like a weird thing
When we were making the simple plan documentary
And when we were making the simple plan book
Many years ago
Like, okay, can you find pictures of you as a teenager?
I'm like
I can't
Like I've got these like four
Maybe four pictures of me
Like holding a guitar
That have been circling
You know
And then the rest
The rest is like
Family pictures
I'm not just going to throw that in there
Like they're kind of irrelevant to the story
But yeah, so I don't have that many
And then obviously in contrast
Arkids
Oh my god
So documented
You know, we walk around with cameras in our pockets
And it's a
It's a good thing
You know, my daughter feels like
She remembers being 18 months old
Which makes no sense
You know, because she's seen the images in the videos
But I still can't remember that
Yeah, exactly
I do want to ask you
Before we get into the whole Disney thing
Because last we spoke was like kind of like in the middle of spring break
It was right before I left
And I think the weather was quite, quite nice
Quite gorgeous, it was still cold, but we got some
I did some of my best snowboarding ever
We got one of those beautiful day
Where like just like
You know, like a couple inches of powder
Maybe 10 centimeters that just fall in
And the packing underneath was hard and nice and perfect
And I got some beautiful snowboarding done
Like minus five degrees, which is ideal
And then obviously we did Disney
But how did your spring break finish?
My spring break was actually really, really good
We have like, there's a family cottage
That we went to, but it's pretty far from any skiing hills
And so our plan was like
We're going to go to the cottage for like a long weekend
Like Friday, Saturdays, Sunday, whatever
Right
And then we're like, let's come back down to the city
Yeah
And then go skiing in a couple of days
And then we'll go back up to the cottage and we got there
And we weren't with Ben
And I'll tell you why in a minute
But and so we were alone with Juju
And she's the first one who said like
Hey guys, why don't we just stay here
It's so nice, it's calm, it's chill
And we were like
Yeah, yeah
If you're not bored
And but she said this like pretty early onset
And so we're like, look, let's see what's what on Monday
If we want to go down and go skiing, we can
And if we don't, we didn't pack for for a full week
But I mean, there's a washer dryer
Like yeah
You like the sweater?
I'll be wearing it a lot
Thank God, it's cashmere
And so you come feet
I'm going to be plugging that a lot
I've never had a nice cashmere sweater
And here I am, 45 years old
Beautiful
I don't know why I waited so long, by the way
And so we ended up just staying at the cottage
We went sledding, we went skating
We went snowshoeing
We did a whole lot of nothing
We played a lot of games
And so it was super, super chill
And we did a lot of missing Ben
Because he wasn't there
Because he had the probably one of the best weeks of his life
Thanks to my parents
Who decided to take him on vacation
And take him to London
Whoa
A week
Yeah
And so he, you know, Ben
Turning 15 in a couple of days
Such a nice age to go spend a week with his grandparents
Look, my parents aren't getting any younger
They're in great shape
But my dad is 83, right?
And so, you know, it's
Sooner or later
Traveling with a 15 year old
Is like not the best thing, right?
He's still
He's still in good enough shape
And I think he will be for a long time
Honestly, he takes such good care of his health
But still, like at one point, it's like
You know, you don't want to be in charge of a kid
You take those opportunities when they come
If he says I want to travel with your son, you said
Yes, dad, take him
100%
Yep
And it's funny, my stepmom yesterday
Was she was saying it's funny with Benjamin
We don't need to take a single picture
Because he takes so many
And we have so many good shots from her vacation
And I was like, yep, that's the one
He takes a bunch of pictures
And so he absolutely loved it
London was one of his like dream destinations
Really? Why?
Yeah
Well, I think it stems from him listening to a lot of UK rap
Amazing, okay, of course, make sense
And then just through that
You know, being a bit more in tune with the culture
And the spots and just everything
It's a great city, right?
Obviously
Of all the major cities in the world
Why?
It's more like how it has London peaked the interest of a 15 year old
You know
Yeah
I mean, it's probably just like in popular culture
Like if you had to name the five cities that like must go
You would name Paris
You would name Paris London
Probably LA, maybe Tokyo
Yeah
Right, like there's these cities that just have that aura
To them that are usually like the first destinations
And once you've crossed off that list
You kind of go to like, okay, well now I would love to go to Singapore
Right
Like Singapore is not first
Usually, although Singapore is super nice
Singapore is amazing, but yeah, I understand what you're saying
Yeah
And so, no, they had a really really really cool week
And it's funny, they came back and I was like, oh, so cool for Ben
But then part of me was also like, so cool for my parents
So cool for my parents
It has to have been like a mutually beneficial trip
And I was looking at the stats funny enough
It is mutually beneficial for grandkids to spend time with their grandparents
It apparently like calms kids a lot because I guess grandparents aren't as high strong
Right, like they're not in the rat race
And it's not like, let's go go go back your bag, get your lunch box
Like it's not as stressful life with grandparents
Yeah, well anything's different kid
Anything that anybody that's not your parent will have a much different dynamic of course
So the familiarity of a grandparent is and the fact that it's not your parent
And they trust them completely obviously, so that's that's beautiful
And there's a bunch of studies also on grandparents taking care of their grandkids
Now, I'm not going to qualify this as them like taking care of Ben
Right, it's not like they pick him up after school every day
But grandparents who take care of their grandkids a whole lot
Are a lot sharper in a bunch of different tests because basically like your cognitive skills
Don't go down as quickly because you're still using them
Right, of course, yeah, that makes sense
So mutually beneficial and so a great trip
And I forced them all to go to Wimbledon because they offer like tours
When the tournament isn't on
And I was like, if you guys are in London, you guys need to go to Wimbledon
You guys need to go
And they went on a beautiful sunny day, 17 degrees Celsius
And they make you tour the space
And there's like a guide talking about the tournament and the history
And they're like, honestly, what a cool suggestion, it was really, really fun
And I was like, yeah, you should try to go when there's some tennis now
No, that's your thing
Yeah, exactly
That is your thing
Okay, I'll be there
Yeah, of course you will
You'll be there this summer at Wimbledon
No, I'm going to the other way
The other way
I'm going to both, I'm going to Renan Garras, the French Open
Yeah, of course
Where you play on Red Clay
Yeah
And I got this Red Clay-colored
Beautiful
And then I'm going to Wimbledon, I'll swing July
It's just stupid
I have a horseshoe at my ass
And it's a ballot, right?
You need to win the ballot
And I've won the ballot again
And so people wait 20 years to win the ballot once
I have won it two years in a row
And so I'm going with my mom
It's going to be the trip of a lifetime for her
And that's beautiful, man
After that, I'm going to keep joining the ballot
But I really can't see myself winning three years in a row
That makes no sense
You're the second person in the span of a couple days
That has planned trips with their parents
People are aged that are traveling with their parents
And obviously, okay, so now that we're on the Disney thing
We've been extremely fortunate to have passed
Yeah, should we talk about the Disney thing after the song?
Yes, okay, sure, yeah, let's do it, okay
We're sorry, we're sorry
You know what? Blame the ice storm
We completely veered off track
I really apologize, I believe it may be my fault
But it's a bad with simple plan
I forget how many years running now
Oh, man
After the song has been going to Walt Disney World
It's become this really cool band tradition
And he's going to tell us about it after the song
This is Lolo
It's a brand new song called 007
And it's right here on Man in the Hour
And I don't be radio
It's double as heaven
Got a license to kill
I bet you blow it all up
Just for the day
Your lips are a whipping
But I'm kissing and still
You say you won't break my heart
But I know that you will
I spy with my little eye
My tall dark and handsome demise
And you say you want to look good guys
Yeah, right
You like it
You're not scared
It tastes like I'm going to get hurt
It feels like I'm sleeping
You're too short
Till tonight
You'll write a match
Then walk away
Like you
Couldn't kill it
It's nothing as you may
So I bet
Kissing and smile
Right off your face
I know you're actually a group
But I'm on to you
Yeah, I'm on to you
Baby, double as heaven
Got a license to kill
I bet you blow it all up
Just for the day
Your lips are a whipping
But I'm kissing and still
You say you won't break my heart
But I know that you will
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
Baby, I'm on to you
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
Baby, you're lonely as I distract
But I know you're inside
You'll take me out with no worries
Thinking it's so undercover
You're just like all the others
You'll play me like your favorite sport
You'll write a match
Then walk away
Like you
Couldn't kill it
It's nothing as you may
So I bet
Kissing and smile
Right off your face
I know you're actually a group
But I'm on to you
Yeah, I'm on to you
Baby, you're double or seven
Got a license to kill
I bet you blow it all up
Just for the day
Your lips are a whipping
But I'm kissing and still
You say you won't break my heart
But I know that you will
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
Baby
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
Baby
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
Baby
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
Baby
I'm on to you
I'm on to you
But I'm on to you
Can't get enough

Fresh Off
A pretty cool trip
That you may have seen on social media
Where him & his rock outfits
Simple plan
Pretty much every year
There's been going toSC
Walt Disney World
How many years is running
But but but seven years running maybe but not seven years total because I've been with you guys
Yeah, like and this was this was 18 years ago. Yeah, so
2004 I think yes 2004. I believe it was the first time we played grad night
Yeah, and we play that twice and then since then Disney decided that it might not be the best idea to have high school students
Stay out till 3 a.m. On park grounds, which I believe was a smart idea
So they kids get a little goofy. I thought
Sure do
But now they it's they there's a there's a stage in front of the American
Pavilion at upcott center and they have bands throughout their year that keep going going going
So we started doing this many years ago now
It turned into not only a tradition like you were saying but like kind of like a main event like every single performance
Has is I'm not gonna say sold out but it's full and there's people like outside the room watching
In and just walking by and stopping to watch the band like it's it's kind of really fun
And we are extremely spoiled and grateful for Disney for giving us this this opportunity and
We each get a guide. So we've got that VIP thing where they drive you around in a van
You can skip the line. You can do as many rises you want as many times as you want and
It's a it's it's that's I mean it's the next level luxury as far as theme parks go and it's something that by the way is
Is is something that anyone can purchase?
Of course, you can go you can go to Disney and say I want a guide takes you everywhere
He makes you cut every single line. Yeah, but it's just it's just pretty damn expensive and so it's it's a nice little perk as
As the headliner of the show to say like yes, you get a guide. I call it a dog personally because I don't know if you remember
He still comes to the shows. There's need out of town. We see him like we didn't see this year
We saw him last year. Disney Doug. Yeah, he's he's just saying out because Doug was one of of these VIP guides
20 years ago that that took us around a little bit. Wait wait wait. Hey, this is gonna be super useless for everyone else, but what does he do now?
I think he's not a guide still no, I believe for the longest time we still involved in the in the corporation
Now I believe he does events for a different company
So that that's that's where we're at with that
Sorry, these are the kinds of questions I need to have with Sebastian off air
I'm gonna bring it back to what we're talking about before and then we're gonna bring it back to the ice star
No, so traveling with your parents. So this year. Yeah, my sister
Came with us with her husband and son my nephew
And we were going around my sister as has been to Disney since we were kids
But we had not been to Disney at Disney together for the past 30 years
My parents had a trailer that that got pulled behind their minivan
And for about like five years in a row when we were young kids up until we were teenagers
Every other year I would say we would drive from Montreal to Florida during spring break and spend the week at Disney
Which is crazy it is crazy, especially if it's not a tour bus that you can hang out at we were in the minivan for 30 hours
30 hours that's what I was gonna say like people need to understand like how far those two
Yeah, and then so they would drive they would do it in two days usually sometimes the first day be in the longer day
Maybe like a 16 hour travel day or like a little bit more and then the remainder of like you know seven eight hours
And then we would get there and we would park at the campground so obviously you save you save all the money on flights
And you save all the money on hotels campgrounds were about I don't know 60 bucks a day back then anyways
And I think one of our one of our our crew person used to go to Disney as a kid and their parents found a ticket for Magic Kingdom
From the late 80s. That was like 37 dollars
Anyways, that's not the prices anymore. So so while we were there
Going around with my sister with this tour guide. I turn to her and I'm like do you think mom would like this?
Do you think mom would enjoy doing Disney this way while she's can still walk my dad can't walk long distances anymore
So that's a no-no for him like a trip where you have to visit a lot of places doesn't work for him anymore
So now I got my mom left on my okay
Maybe mom would come down and enjoy Disney
But like she wouldn't do any of the thrill rides of course, which is what Clare enjoys
But she could do it's a small world after all over and over again absolutely and and and so like I was just thinking about you know kids traveling with a
Grandparents grandparents and I think that would be
I think that would be lovely if I if I if I managed to figure out a way to take my parents on one of these trips whether it's a Disney one
Whether it's a it's a future family one
But as you as you know and or might understand like our I'm away from home quite a bit
So whenever whenever we plan family trips
It's it's the three of us and we want to make sure we spend the time together
So it's very rare that we add on more people to these trips
So it's it's never occurred to me until recently's like I should have done this
But I still have some time to do this so traveling with grandparents. I'm I'm in I think it's cool. Yeah
It's a it's a good time to do it and
And you know on the flip side too like my my parents look obviously the they are the ones who invited Ben
And so they have they're at a place in their life where like you know they've planned accordingly
They can spend some money on a trip on a nice trip right? It's like you know once you're 83
There's unfortunately a little bit less in front than than behind you
And so just that part's been pretty cool. Yeah, okay
Back on the ice storm. So
We're we're we're assuming that we'll kind of stay in inside for the rest of the day
I'm lucky enough that I have a grocery store that's walking distance
That's supposed to be open today. It's oh so it's skating distance. Yeah, so he's
I think it's just about to be skating distance because there's already a little thin layer of ice everywhere
100% I just before this and look mind you it's like 8 a.m. Here on the east coast
I went outside to
It's funny. I had a bag of salt. Yeah, but it was like at the end of the driveway
And I was like I should probably put it by the door that way I can
I can put salt on my way to the car right exactly and so I went I went out and it was already like super slippery
Yeah, okay, so so my question to you is this and this is one of those like beautiful would you rather right?
Okay, yes, I love those okay, so right now, you know
It could be it could be different context but for this specific reason in my scenario
You are confined to your house and let's say to your house in backyard for the rest of your life
Yep, this is scenario when you are you have to stay in your house or your backyard for the rest of your life
And your your family can go go as they please work go to school do all that
But you Patrick have to stay in your house or your backyard for the rest of your life and the trade-off is
You're like you're good you won't have to you know you won't have to worry about money
Whatever situation you're in now like whatever your level of lifestyle is now you can keep that forever
You know you'll have food on the table forever
You know your bills are paid forever everybody is fulfilled in their job and order things from
Order things as much as you want you just cannot ever go anywhere. You're not the guy running errands
You can order you're not if you need some fix you call someone you know to come and fix it obviously and and all of that
Would you take would you take that deal if you knew it meant your family's fine forever financially
Security is fine. You know your house won't burn down in this scenario. Let's let's let's make it. Let's make it appealing
Yeah, you know like you won't get flooded. Yeah, they give me one
So it's only me who's confined to that I'm basically I'm basically okay. You're you're a prisoner in a scenario
You're drawn out a scenario where I was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and the judge was nice and said that I could do
I could do like house confinement instead of jail
Yes, but we're throwing a bone your way meaning like you know like they're
Yeah, but well, but either bunch of money or but a bunch of money you could spend it but then the scenario like
You won't run out is what I'm saying. You're fine. You're good. I don't change the houses. You're not you know, no
I love honestly. I love my house. I love my backyard. I like if you would told me like
Oh, you know, it's like a pandemic situation where I need to be stuck here
I'd be like yeah, honestly the house is fine and it's cool. Yeah, but I'd have a real hard time at 45 years old saying that I'm never gonna travel
You know like yeah case in point like I'm never gonna travel with my grandkids ever. I'm not gonna go to London with my my 15-year-old grandson
You would need to be throwing a substantial amount of generational wealth my way
For me to make that sacrifice where I'm like okay. I'm gonna say yes to this only because it means
You know lifelong security for multiple generations coming down and so I will put myself in in you know world jail
Yes, even though it's a nice. It's a nice one like you said
Um, but you give me a hundred million dollars and it's like I know that like things are fine
And I can bring the world to me like you know, if I want to see me talika in concert
Maybe I can book them in my backyard
Sure, if you give me if you give me like that's like a stupid amount of money
Then maybe I'd say yes, but otherwise I'm way too young to
Put myself in that situation, right like I feel like I can make money other ways and so you know
Um
Basically the question is he is is money, right? It's only that I might that that might be what it comes down to but but also
I think there's a little component of
Are you the type of person that
Will make do are you the type of person that's just like so happy when he's home that he's like yeah
Cuz there's a big side of me that's like that. So that's where the question comes from like I love being here
So but but but I'm with you
But you love being there only because you haven't been for so long right like obviously that place is really question of
Yeah, it's it's a grasses greener situation for you where you know
We have this conversation 12 years down the road and you haven't left your house in 12 years
You're wearing shoe boxes as shoes
You know, it might be a bit different where you're like yeah, I'm kind of getting
And see you so you're you're saying the fashion has evolved to a point where shoe boxers as shoes is now the new way to be cool
I can order shoes. It's a it's a very very deep and dark simpsons reference where mr. Burns becomes a bit crazy and he's
He's basically like a Howard Hughes
um
Like joke where he becomes a germaphobe crazy and he's wearing shoe boxes
Remember that
Oh my god, what a great episode
Yeah, so there's a very look
Um, yeah, that's why I said that but no, I think you go fucking crazy a bit like yeah
I want to go out running in the world sometimes like I want to do sports right like I can't do sports at my house
Yeah, that's right. I can I can get a gym and a treadmill. Okay cool, but I can never play tennis ever again
Uh, in the winter, I guess I could I could build an ice rink in my backyard
But it'll be tough sebi. I don't like this one. What do you want to stay home?
Well, I think you you love being home so much you give me $100 million and I'll let you stay home
I think it's one of those like 51% to 49, you know, because I I
I think that I could
But I still if in a would you rather situation? I'm like no, I'll leave my house, you know, yeah
Um, no, but but but I mean
Look, I do love my house and it's funny. I don't want to move in everyone's in a while my wife gets like this itch
Like I'd be nice to shop for a new house and I was like no, I'm
No, let's clean this one and rearrange furniture. Yeah, I love the location. I love the house
I love the way it's divided. I love how it's not too big. We talked about it. We don't need intercoms to talk to each other
That is true. Um, I love your house by the way. It's great about all the time think about that all the time
Rich people with huge houses. How do you talk to each other? Yeah, yeah, that's right
Benjamin. Where are you?
Yeah, also
I'm glad we settled that yeah same same
Um, I got a little bit of a health scare. I need to share with you. Okay.
Um, we're um, I'm super happy that that I'm here this evening because there's uh there's a pretty good chance that I wasn't gonna make it today
That's right
Had a had a bit of a of a health scare and uh look
We've been in this relationship with with uh, man of the hour for almost 20 years now. I think I can share it with the world
Yeah, absolutely, but after this song though, there's no way yeah, there's no way we can share before we listen to some music impossible
This is Rose colored world
This song's called too far gone and it's right here in a man of the hour and I know be radio
Maybe it's because you've got the best of me
And now I gotta let it be I gave it ill gave it all I got
You will be well, you know, it's not my fault
My stomach should have been a night
I know, I know, I know it's never getting better. I know, I know, I know
Don't want to wake your cause
I'm afraid of what it'll do to me
It's what I feel the most
If you stay, I'll be too far gone
Yeah, too far gone
I'm too far gone
We'll go around a time or two
You raise your voice till you're face to blue
There's only one more thing to do
It's what so far
It's in me your intention
It's my heart so bad
It's in my lover the kitchen
And I can't take this feeling anymore
Don't want to wake your cause
I'm afraid of what it'll do to me
It's what I feel the most
If you stay, I'll be too far gone
Yeah, too far gone

It's Patrick and Sebastian right here on the man of the hour show
And for a quick minute yesterday
It felt like it may have been Sebastian
Solo on the man of the hour show tonight
Crazy situation
And I'm happy to open my medical files to all of you
Let's do it
And share because that's what we've been doing for 20 years
I don't know if you remember there's been a full episode
On my kidney stone situation
Where I went into details about my personal urethra
So you know it's right now it's your turn
So my personal urethra
Yeah, it's only yours
I agree
Okay, all right
Keep going
Not your shared urethra
That's a different story
So for the past five months
And Seb knows this because it first happened when I was with him
I've been getting these like
Huge crazy
Stemic pains but like not just stomach pain like 910 pain out of 10 right like
Girls I now know I think would it feels like to give birth right like that bad of a pain
Kidding obviously, but it just really really bad
But the crazy thing about this pain is that it shoots up to like really intense 10 on 10 pain
And then I get this episode and like I puke
Because it's so painful right like yeah
You know when you puke out of pain and not out of like bad lettuce
Yeah, and so just bad
But then after like four hours it just like on a dime
Oh, it's over
Right, I'm fine
Okay, I go I go from like I'm dying to like let's go play tennis
And it's not gold stones, it's not kidney stones
So well, I wasn't sure what it was right
But with kidney stones hits you in the back
And so there's a few things that just with with doctor internet you can kind of rule out
But then I started you know reaching out to my real doctor when it became
A pattern right like the first time
Honestly because I puked I was like oh food poisoning that sucks. Yeah
Second time I was like food poisoning again
Yeah, bizarre and then the third time I was like okay
Um, I haven't eaten 12 hours and I haven't puke like I've I'm puking bile
So it can't be food related and so by the third time you may you may think that I should have
Woken up a bit earlier, but by the third time I was like okay, this is worrisome now. This is something
Uh-huh, and so I started reaching out to my doctor and obviously the processes are are long
But it happened five months in real like September, October, November, December, January
And then February didn't happen, but then March 3rd dead and February is a short a short month
So it's basically basically once a month basically February 31st would have been my doctor
We finally kind of like get into fifth year on this and
Get all the tests possible and Monday night right like less than 48 hours ago
They go do a scan. Have you ever done this scan where they put um
They put this thing through your veins like iodine. Is that it? Yes. Yes. Yeah, I've done that once
And it's funny because yesterday when you called me you reminded me that your ears kind of burned
Yeah, and you get that sensation of wanting to pee
I've done it once and I forget why it feels like you have because it gets all warm right? Yeah
The feeling when you when you're a kid and you pee your bed and you wake up with like that warmth feeling
I'd so say
Have it chasing it ever since
And so I do this scan and they go
Your doctor should have these results within two weeks, right?
fine
I get a call yesterday morning, right like
12 hours after doing the scan and it's a doctor who like seems pretty concerned and he's like
I'm just looking at your scan now and
pretty worried about your um
What's it called appendicitis? Yes. Thank you. You're appendus
I'm glad I need to ask Sebastian
My health situation
And so he's like you really need to come to the ER now and like we need to to to to to operate like emergency operation
Yeah, and I was like
Are you sure and he goes well? I got to tell you I'm a bit surprised to be
To be talking to someone on the phone who seems like in tip-top shape, right?
I thought that you were going to be like a
Like someone in deep pain like hello
Right, right. Yeah, so I explained to him the sitch
And and he goes okay. Well, this is really bizarre. I mean the scan is showing that you're basically going through like an appendicitis that needs to
To be removed now before it bursts right and you would not be talking to me on that tone if that was the case
Yes, so calls my doctor. They go back and forth and they go and when you call me yesterday
You're playing the guy that actually shows up at the hospital like hi excuse me
I don't want to I really don't want to know you but my appendix about the burst and I was wondering if you could squeeze me in today
Maybe exactly
You know the guy that like taps his heels as he walks in like
So happy to be here grateful for you by the way
Basically hospital in my doctor went back and forth talked and they all agreed that like okay. No, this is
Something that really needs to be dealt with maybe not go to the emergency room, but it needs to be
dealt with as an emergency and so they're like you need to be operated within a week
This was yesterday, right and I was like okay and goes so stand by your phone
we're gonna be calling you and
scheduling
scheduling you in and so I've been living with my phone. I usually have my phone on silent all the time right like I'm one of those guys that like
My phone's pretty often in my hands if I'm working like to
um
But I'll miss you know one call one call out of two but they call you right back, right?
Like I'll miss your call because of it non-silent
Yeah, and then I see it and then I call you right back
And so now my phone has not been on silent and I'm on doctor watch because they could be calling me any minute going like hey
Come on in bud, and so
Yeah, so next time next time we see each other
I might not be whole oh
I'll be missing a piece of me
Okay, well, hopefully the piece of you that's missing is the piece of you that needs to be gone
Currently, yeah, so I'm gonna be um posting the the hospital address if you want to send flowers cards
chocolates presents
Yeah, okay, well, I mean I mean we're all thinking about you obviously if you need to go yeah, it's look how it's sick
This is crazy
But you look amazing by the way, so I'm kind of the cashmere sweater. I'm kind of with you on that
I'm kind of with you in the sense that you look too good to be feeling bad. So take care of that buddy
I am
But yeah crazy episode crazy story, right? Yeah crazy crazy story and and and it's and unfortunately it has not resolved
So hopefully you have an ending for us next time we speak
And hopefully it's not my end. No, no
No, I was telling my wife so let's drive that from the record
Why would you say that? I have life insurance and so I was telling her
Hey, by the way, you know what the life insurance documents are and she's like nope
I'm like, yeah, I didn't think you did they're here
She's like, why are you telling me this and I'm like, I'm gonna go wonder. It's a really super easy operation, right?
Yeah, like my my level of worry is that 0%
Um, have you ever been under before?
Yeah, yeah, okay, I've never been under and even when I got my procedure done for my kidney stones
I asked them. I'm like, I am terrified of going under
But not only that when they put you under they have to you have to get intubated
Which is which can be horrible for your vocal cords
So they actually gave me an epidural last time I got a procedure junk as that the procedure was below the belt
So epidural was was completely fine with them and I was heavily sedated. So I don't remember the thing
Yeah, same I had a colonoscopy a year and a half ago. Yeah, that's epidural
No, I know they give you they give you that drug that's been killing everyone fentanyl. Oh, jeez. Okay. Yeah
What the hell they're like, yeah, we'll be getting you just a little bit of fentanyl. I'm like
Well, that's what it's for you know, it's made for
For exactly it's what hey, it was it was so good to see you it was so good to see you
And uh, well, I mean we were about to get into butt stuff
And I don't think we're allowed to say any of that on on on the radio here
So I we are but we don't have to okay
I feel like Sebastian just got something ubered to his house and he like uber eats is at the door and Sebastian is like hey good
It was nice seeing you back
Well, thanks for tuning in everybody and uh, hopefully you got some good coffee. We got some coffee you got uber eats
We got some good news for you. Hopefully next time we get together on mic again and looking forward to hearing from you
Wishing you all the best and to all of us you gotta go I can finish the show by myself if you need to leave
Yeah, well, you know, I'm about to get this battery and
That's what it is. Obviously the guys are the door and obviously the kids aren't in in in in school today
So we got to get back to our daddy duties
So gonna do some of that today. So it's funny in closing
I have a friend that I talked to on the phone pretty often when I'm dropping off the kids at school
And he's the exact same kind of guy will be talking and it's fun
We talk about hockey about life and it's usually that he's at work and he's probably getting like a call
Yeah, and so he always finishes our phone calls on such a like
You know like such a rushing screeching the brakes. We'll be talking like oh, yeah, Canadian's last night
I gotta go bike and he hangs up and my kids are always like this guy is so rude the way he hangs up
But I know that it's because of work and so yeah, of course. I'm used to this
Bye
See you later
Give it up for I do be everybody
