Welcome to Influencer Confidential by Sidewalker Daily.
0:35
My name is Nina Zeta and I will be your host.
0:38
I love working with brands and influencers
0:41
on all things business strategy.
0:43
Are you ready to learn what it takes to work
0:45
in this influencer industry and see behind the curtain?
0:48
Well, let's jump in.
0:53
If your net income as a creator is over $50,000,
0:58
you're gonna wanna pay attention to today's video
1:00
and episode because we are gonna dive deep
1:03
on some topics that are a little complicated
1:05
but are going to save you a lot of money.
1:09
Now, maybe you're not at that 50,000 net figure yet,
1:12
but you're on the way and you are growing.
1:15
You should definitely go ahead and take notes as well
1:18
because what we're gonna be covering
1:20
is more of a business lesson to my creator community
1:24
and I'm gonna do my very best to make it as simple
1:27
and easy as possible so that you guys can digest it.
1:30
Now, when I say net income, that means after your expenses.
1:34
So, if you make $100,000 a year and your expenses
1:38
are $50,000, then you are netting $50,000, okay?
1:41
And this income doesn't just have to come from brand deals,
1:44
you guys, this is just your creator income in general.
1:47
What they're affiliates with your group trips
1:49
with whatever it is that you're doing, all right?
1:51
Because at that income level,
1:53
the way you are set up legally in your business
1:56
really matters and you can be leaving thousands
2:00
intact savings on the table if you're not doing it, right?
2:03
So, let's start at the basics.
2:04
What type of business entity are you?
2:06
So, a lot of creators, when they first get started,
2:09
they start off as sole proprietors
2:11
and then many of them will become LLCs
2:14
at some point in their journey.
2:15
I'm sure a lot of you are listening in right now,
2:17
probably have an LLC set up.
2:19
LLCs are super popular because they separate personal
2:22
and business liability, they're easy to set up
2:25
and they're affordable.
2:26
But from a tax perspective, an LLC alone may not be
2:30
the best way to optimize your savings.
2:32
So, you may or may not be familiar with the term S-Corp.
2:36
That's what we're gonna be talking about in today's episode.
2:38
Now, just so that you guys know,
2:40
this isn't something that you form,
2:41
it's something that you elect.
2:43
You elect S-Corp status with the IRS.
2:46
So, if you are an LLC, this is something
2:49
that you would elect to get taxed as an S-Corp.
2:52
You can't do this as a sole proprietor, okay?
2:55
So, it's kind of like this upgrade path
2:57
that once you're making a certain amount in your LLC,
3:00
you can be like, oh, I wanna elect to be taxed in this way.
3:04
So, when you're in LLC,
3:05
all of your profit is subject to self-employment tax.
3:09
So, it could be anywhere around like 15% of your net profit
3:13
is gonna get the self-employment tax, okay?
3:16
But with an S-Corp, you basically split up your income
3:19
into a salary and then distributions.
3:23
So, your salary is subject to payroll taxes,
3:26
but your distributions are not subject
3:29
to that self-employment tax.
3:31
Don't worry, I'm gonna give you an example
3:32
to break it down so you can visually see what I'm talking about.
3:35
So, the way it typically works is you are going to pay yourself
3:38
a very reasonable salary.
3:41
And then the rest of that money
3:42
that you're making those distributions,
3:45
they're not gonna be taxed that extra self-employment tax.
3:49
And that is where the big savings comes from, okay?
3:52
So, let me give you an example to help your brain see it.
3:55
Let's just say you net $100,000.
3:59
If you were just an LLC that did not elect to this S-Corp,
4:02
you would be tax around 15%,
4:04
so let's call it $15,000 of that $100,000
4:09
would be your self-employment tax.
4:11
Now, this is before federal and state taxes as well, okay?
4:15
So, just off the top, you're taking that 15% off.
4:19
Now, if you were an S-Corp,
4:21
that 15% self-employment tax is only gonna go off the salary.
4:25
So, remember, there's salary and distributions.
4:27
So, again, let's take that $100,000.
4:29
Let's say we pay ourselves in salary 40,000,
4:33
and then we put 60,000 in distributions.
4:36
So, that 15% is going on the 40,000, not on the 100,000, right?
4:43
So, that self-employment piece is 40,000 times 15%.
4:46
It comes to around $6,000.
4:48
Now, that other $60,000 is not subject to the 15%,
4:53
you know, self-employment tax.
4:54
So, that other $60,000 basically is protected from that.
4:58
It's still gonna have federal and state income tax,
5:01
but it's gonna avoid that self-employment tax.
5:04
So, in our original example,
5:06
the one that wasn't an S-Corp,
5:07
we were paying around 15,000 in taxes and self-employment.
5:11
In our new example, as an elected S-Corp,
5:14
we're now paying around $6,000,
5:16
and that is around a $9,000 savings in taxes a year.
5:21
So, that is why when you hit a certain number, financially,
5:25
you wanna make sure that your company is set up
5:27
to take advantage of these tax savings.
5:29
Now, just so that you know,
5:31
because you are now, let's just say, an elected S-Corp,
5:34
it doesn't mean things are free.
5:36
There are also hidden fees that you're gonna have to take care of,
5:39
but a lot of times when businesses do the cost benefit,
5:42
those fees, you still save more in the long run.
5:45
One of those fees are setting up payroll,
5:47
like because now you have a salary,
5:49
you need to put yourself on payroll,
5:51
and obviously there are fees
5:53
to be part of different payroll systems,
5:56
but again, for many people,
5:58
once you're hitting a certain income level,
5:59
it is obviously worth it.
6:01
So, here are some common signs
6:03
that you're ready to almost upgrade to an S-Corp, right?
6:05
Remember, it's not a different entity,
6:06
you're still an LLC,
6:07
but now you're getting taxed differently as an S-Corp.
6:10
So, here are some signs.
6:11
Obviously, consistent brand deals
6:13
or revenue coming in,
6:15
you are looking at your numbers and you're like,
6:16
wait, this is not just hot and cold.
6:18
I know that my company is making a certain amount.
6:21
The reason we said 50,000 net,
6:24
because that feels like it needs to be the minimum.
6:26
If you're at 75,000 net, 100,000 net,
6:29
you should absolutely consider electing to be an S-Corp,
6:34
because that is a tell sign that you are ready to do so.
6:37
If you have predictable income,
6:38
if you have monthly retainers,
6:40
if you feel like your business is financially safe
6:43
and ready, these are all great signs
6:44
that you're ready to do this.
6:46
Now, let's just say you are ready to switch
6:47
how your company is being taxed
6:49
and you're ready to elect as an S-Corp.
6:51
You are going to have to look into payroll.
6:53
This is the first thing that we did anyways.
6:56
A lot of people have asked me,
6:57
Nina, who have you gone with,
6:59
especially when I'm dealing with creators
7:00
who are making serious money
7:02
and we're talking about their businesses in this way.
7:04
We, personally, at our company at Sidewalker Daily,
7:07
we have been using Gusto forever
7:09
and we have nothing but good things to say about it.
7:11
It has such an easy dashboard,
7:14
such an easy interface because, like, for some of us,
7:17
these, like, number of things
7:18
can be really intimidating and scary.
7:20
I love to have, like, really amazing customer support.
7:22
They make it really simple to sign on.
7:24
Just visually, it is very easy.
7:26
The payments are automated.
7:28
I love Gusto because it just makes payroll
7:30
really stupidly simple.
7:32
That's really the bottom line.
7:33
It makes it really, really simple.
7:34
It's built for small businesses, creators,
7:37
or small businesses.
7:38
You don't have to have a lot of employees.
7:39
You could be the only employee, right?
7:41
But it's built for us.
7:42
And it also is very contract or friendly.
7:44
So if you're, like, hiring a photographer,
7:46
hiring a makeup artist and you need to file
7:48
like your 1099s and all of that,
7:50
it just makes it really simple.
7:52
So if you guys are gonna join them
7:53
and gonna make the switch,
7:55
go ahead and use our referral code
7:57
so that they know you guys came from us.
7:59
And again, these are all very exciting things
8:01
because just putting yourself on payroll,
8:03
like, developing your business in this way,
8:05
operationally, you become legit.
8:07
And that helps you run your business
8:08
and just feel really good about running your business.
8:10
Lastly, if you are listening in
8:12
and you're not at that number yet
8:14
and you're like, I'm not there,
8:15
I still think that today's video should help you
8:17
think about your businesses as you guys grow,
8:20
even if you're at 20,000 a year or 15,000,
8:22
you're gonna get there.
8:23
You're gonna get there.
8:24
Eventually, you will get to that $50,000 net profit.
8:28
Just keep putting in the work, putting in the time.
8:31
Businesses are not built overnight.
8:34
And for some of you,
8:34
I hope this could be a really good goal for you
8:37
of where you wanna be in your business
8:38
and where you wanna grow.
8:40
And again, if you ever need support in that piece
8:42
in your growth, thinking about your business strategically
8:44
and you want me involved,
8:45
you can go ahead and get on a call with someone from our team.
8:48
They'll share with you how I can jump in,
8:50
how I can support you, how I can be a part of this.
8:52
There's nothing more that I love
8:53
than talking about business, especially with creators.
8:55
So I'm here to support you guys every step of the way.
8:58
So you can go ahead, get on a call with our success manager
9:00
and we can share how we can support you.
9:03
I hope you enjoyed today's episode.
