I received an email today from a colleague.
1:14
The subject line simply said,
1:20
When I clicked the link in the email,
1:23
and I saw what they did to Dary and Mensa,
1:26
I realized he's 1,000 percent right.

2:05
On this episode, we'll talk about Miami's wide receiver core
2:09
because they've earned a distinction
2:12
from profile focus heading into the 2026 season
2:16
that no other school is getting.
2:18
But before we get to that,
2:21
I need to comment on something that
2:25
from a Miami point of view,
2:27
I can only describe this as rage bait,
2:32
which means I'm fully admitting.
2:35
I took the bait hook line and sinker.
2:38
They got me, but I can't just let this sit out there on the worldwide web
2:43
without commenting on it on how ridiculous I think it is.
2:47
Now, the email that I referenced came to be
2:50
from a very good friend of the show and colleague,
2:53
Brian Smith from the portal podcast and locked on semifinals.
2:57
And like I mentioned, he sent me this email.
3:01
And in that email, he linked this story
3:05
written by Bill Connelly of ESPN.
3:07
Now, I don't have any personal beef with Bill.
3:10
Bill's really good at what he does.
3:11
He puts out some great material.
3:13
I don't have to agree with all of his material.
3:15
And I certainly don't agree with this one.
3:17
So Connelly put out his pre-spring quarterback rankings
3:23
for all 68 power for college football teams.
3:28
Now, you're thinking about where they could have
3:31
Darian Mensa ranked.
3:32
Keeping in mind, Mensa is widely considered a year in advance
3:38
to be a potential first round draft pick in 2027.
3:43
Mensa's on the short list as a high-smotrophy finalist
3:47
for the pre-season projections.
3:49
And I will also mention Darian Mensa,
3:51
statistically, what he did at Duke last season
3:55
was the nation's second leading passer.
3:58
Just under 4,000 yards, 3,973 passing yards
4:03
was tied for second nationally in passing touchdowns
4:08
And along with that, one of the better touchdown
4:10
and interception ratios you will ever see at 34 to 6.
4:15
Darian Mensa was eighth nationally in total points
4:18
responsible for by almost any metric.
4:22
This guy was a top five, if not better,
4:25
quarterback in the country last year.
4:27
By any way, you want to measure it or slice it.
4:30
And that was on a team that largely due to his contributions.
4:34
They did win the ACC last year.
4:37
But on a team that didn't have as many weapons
4:39
as he's now going to have at Miami versus what he had with Duke.
4:43
Not only receivers, but also running backs,
4:45
one of the best running back rooms in the country.
4:48
And Duke also didn't have the sort of defense
4:51
to play complimentary football that he's going to have.
4:53
In short, he's walking into a better situation at Miami,
4:57
which means he will probably, or at least possibly, to be fair,
5:01
have a bigger impact this year at the University of Miami
5:04
than what he had at Duke now that he's got a better team around him.
5:07
So again, with that set, where do you think Bill Connelly
5:10
ranked Darien Mensa?
5:12
You're probably thinking, oh, you know, top five, top three,
5:17
is it possible he's number one?
5:21
Number 11 is where they rank Mensa.
5:24
Now, before I tell you who's in front of him in those rankings,
5:28
and ironically enough, some of those quarterbacks in front of him,
5:32
Miami maybe had the chance to get in the transfer portal,
5:35
but they preferred Mensa.
5:37
And some of those quarterbacks in front of him
5:39
clearly didn't put up the numbers he put up last year.
5:42
And also ironic, Miami beat head to head,
5:45
which has nothing to do with Mensa.
5:46
But several of the quarterbacks who were listed in front of them,
5:49
Miami beat head to head last year,
5:51
just kind of as a fun side effect of all this.
5:55
So Darien Mensa at number 11,
5:57
and this is what Connelly writes about Mensa.
6:02
3,973 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, six interceptions,
6:07
66.8% completion rate,
6:10
11.9 yards per completion, 156 non-sac rushing yards,
6:14
and one rushing touchdown, so 35 total touchdowns.
6:18
He writes, he certainly didn't do his old team,
6:21
any favors in entering the portal in mid-January.
6:24
But Mensa now lands with the defending national runner up,
6:27
where he'll have a chance to lead,
6:29
to team with Malachitone Mark Fletcher Jr. in company.
6:34
Why does that first sentence make me feel like
6:36
they're punishing him a little bit for, you know,
6:39
leaving Duke very late in the transfer portal, you know,
6:42
saying he certainly didn't do his old team, any favors.
6:46
So here's who's ranked in front of Darien Mensa.
6:49
Number 10, just makes me laugh.
6:52
Number, ranked a spot in front of Darien Mensa.
6:55
Byron Brown, the former USF quarterback
6:58
who's transferring to Auburn.
6:59
Now, okay, maybe my judgements clouded a little bit
7:02
because Miami went head-to-head, again,
7:04
not Mensa on the field, but Miami went head-to-head
7:06
with Brown the last couple of years
7:08
and made him look very ordinary
7:11
when he was going up against a very good defense.
7:13
He was playing at a group of six program
7:16
with Miami being the top team that he faced
7:18
the last couple of years, and yes,
7:20
I do include the time he faced Alabama.
7:23
And Miami made him look very, very ordinary.
7:25
Now, Brown did, he really improved his accuracy
7:29
from 2024 into 2025, but ask yourself,
7:34
and I researched this,
7:36
where's Byron Brown projected to be drafted next year?
7:39
It's not in the first round.
7:41
Third, fourth round picks something like that.
7:43
So I mean, and yeah, he gets to team up
7:46
with his former head coach at Auburn,
7:48
but to me, ranking Byron Brown and know
7:51
his numbers were not as good as Mensa's last year,
7:53
except for the rushing stats,
7:54
but the passing not nearly as good,
7:57
about 800 and some less passing yards,
8:00
six less passing touchdowns,
8:03
through an extra interception.
8:04
The completion percentage was not as good,
8:06
but they ranked Byron Brown higher than Mensa.
8:08
Number nine is Brennan Soarsby.
8:10
Soarsby, I think Soarsby belongs in the top 10.
8:13
I have no beef with that.
8:14
I could argue Mensa could be ranked higher,
8:16
but I'm not upset about the Soarsby one at Cincinnati.
8:20
Number eight, Gunner Stockton from Georgia.
8:24
I mean, we're all paying the Georgia tax on that one.
8:27
Gunner Stockton is not a better quarterback
8:29
than Dary and Mensa.
8:30
He's very efficient.
8:31
He's like a point guard playing quarterback.
8:33
He doesn't have the same ability to attack down field,
8:36
because Mensa remember led the nation
8:38
with 86 attempts last year of 20 or more air yards
8:41
and had a lot of success with the deep ball.
8:44
Dary and Mensa to me is just a much more complete quarterback,
8:47
but of course, you play for Georgia.
8:49
You're going to be a media darling.
8:51
It always goes that way.
8:52
Number seven, Drew Mestemaker,
8:55
who he put up video game numbers last year at North Texas.
8:59
Like Mestemaker, Mestemaker was actually the only quarterback
9:02
in FBS football, the only one who threw from more passing yards
9:06
than Mensa did last year at over 4,300.
9:09
That was at North Texas.
9:10
He threw for the same number of touchdowns with 34,
9:14
but here's the problem with Mestemaker.
9:17
And obviously, again, the guy was playing a video game
9:20
on easy mode at North Texas last year.
9:23
Not only is he making the step up to the power four,
9:26
but he's joining one of the worst power four rosters
9:29
in America and Bill Connelly even admitted that
9:33
in his article that you're going to take
9:35
the most prolific passer from the group of six.
9:37
What happens when you put him on the worst power four roster?
9:41
I can't imagine he's going to have the Mensa impact
9:44
when he's walking into that situation
9:46
versus the one that Mensa is walking into.
9:50
Dante Moore at number six, the Oregon quarter balsam.
9:54
Again, like if you really want to nitpick the numbers,
9:57
you could argue Mensa could be higher.
9:59
I mean, Moore, I'm actually still surprised
10:01
that Moore didn't want to go to the NFL
10:03
because he would have been a high draft pick,
10:05
but a limited amount of starts under his belt.
10:07
He wanted to get another year of seasoning.
10:10
Moore threw for about 400 and some fewer passing yards.
10:14
Four fewer touchdowns and three,
10:16
four more interceptions than Mensa did last year.
10:20
Jayden Mayava at USC, I mean, 24 and 10,
10:24
the touchdown interception ratio, 3,700 passing yards.
10:29
Completion percentage was not as good as Mensa's.
10:32
I think Miami's going to be better than USC this year.
10:35
So I could argue that one a little bit.
10:36
Number four, I mean, I quit.
10:40
Archmaning at number four.
10:43
The media hasn't finished pretending
10:45
that Archmaning is Peyton Manning.
10:48
Got to break it to you guys.
10:49
Last year should have been a wake up call.
10:51
And yeah, Arch can run and he does have Cam Coleman this year,
10:55
but how you can project Arch being better than Darian Mensa,
11:01
Because again, you have to remember Mensa's escape ability,
11:04
his ability to extend plays, but also his ability
11:07
to play the short game, the versatility.
11:09
Mensa to me is criminally underrated at number 11.
11:13
Trinidad Chamblis at number three.
11:15
Another one that he's doing everything he can not to go pro.
11:20
The NCAA is appealing again to keep him from staying
11:25
Trinidad Chamblis again, I think he belongs on this list
11:28
probably in the top five.
11:31
He threw for only 35 fewer yards than Mensa did.
11:35
22 touchdowns to three interceptions.
11:37
That ratio was awesome.
11:40
So I'm okay with Chamblis being where he is.
11:42
Julie and Saiyan at number two.
11:45
Saiyan to me does not have the sort of awareness
11:49
and ability to play under pressure that Mensa has is a big one.
11:53
And also, Saiyan, when he was putting up good numbers,
11:57
very efficient, completion percentage, huge at Ohio State,
12:02
has really only shown an ability to run an offense
12:06
And any time Ohio State has needed to hurry up or play
12:09
from behind, which only happened a couple of times.
12:12
He was not up to that challenge.
12:14
And again, it hasn't performed well under pressure
12:16
the way that Mensa and some of the other ones have.
12:18
But, you know, Julie and Saiyan is on a great team
12:21
and he still has Jeremiah Smith.
12:22
So I can understand him being ranked high.
12:26
And then number one, CJ Carr from Notre Dame.
12:31
God, I can't wait to see he and Mensa go head to head
12:34
this upcoming season.
12:35
Listen, Carr had overall an awesome season.
12:40
Miami did rattle him at times
12:41
because we did most every quarterback we faced last year.
12:45
The thing about Carr is the big questions
12:49
he's got to answer this season.
12:52
How does he answer to the challenge
12:55
of really having to become the number one protagonist
12:58
on Notre Dame's offense?
12:59
Because he didn't have that last year.
13:01
Last year, he was able to lean on Jeremiah Love
13:04
and Jadari in price and the unbelievable outside
13:07
of when they faced Miami who kept them in check.
13:10
But how they were able to carry that offense.
13:12
It wasn't really Carr carrying the offense.
13:15
It was their rushing attack.
13:16
Both Love and Price are off to the NFL.
13:19
So Carr, like he didn't have to put up big numbers last year.
13:24
2700 passing yards.
13:25
That was, you know, 1200 and some fewer than Mensa.
13:28
24 touchdowns to six interceptions.
13:31
Mensa had a better completion percentage than Carr did last year.
13:35
So we'll see what Carr does with an increased role.
13:38
But receivers are good.
13:39
The offensive line is supposed to be really good
13:41
for Notre Dame this year.
13:42
But you've got at least an argument for Mensa
13:45
against every quarterback ranked in front of them.
13:48
A couple of them are ridiculous,
13:50
like Byron Brown and Arch Manning.
13:52
So leaving Mensa off the top 10 is indefensible.
13:58
Even leaving him out of the top five is surprising.
14:02
But hey, this is one of those scenarios where,
14:05
I don't know if this story is gonna make it
14:07
to Mario Cristobal's inbox the way it did to mine.
14:11
But this is bulletin board stuff.
14:13
This is chip on the shoulder type of stuff.
14:16
I'm sure somebody, maybe some of my listeners
14:19
will tag Mensa on social media with this article.
14:22
And it's gonna give him a big chip on the shoulder.
14:25
Cause again, to not have the guy who is walking into
14:28
an even better situation this year.
14:31
But last year, second in the nation in passing yards
14:35
tied for second in passing touchdowns,
14:38
eighth nationally and total points responsible for.
14:41
And yet your rank him outside the top 10,
14:45
the math ain't mathing folks.
14:47
You wanna keep it locked right here.
14:49
Now, another reason why I think Dary and Mensa
14:51
is gonna have great success at the U is the weaponry,
14:55
the receiving core that he has around him.
14:57
And we'll talk about a distinction they have gotten
14:59
that no other receiving core has.
15:01
You wanna keep it locked right here.
15:03
We're only getting started on this brand new episode
15:05
of Locked On Cains.
15:10
This is Mazda's moving the game forward.
15:12
For those who show, there's more to the score
15:14
than what's on screen.
15:16
Jay Lucas has moved the game forward.
15:18
Who would have thought after the poor season Miami
15:21
had last year, completely new roster
15:24
with a first time head coach with Jay Lucas.
15:28
And he's able to get Miami to 24 regular season wins,
15:32
which just tied a program record
15:34
with another regular season game to play.
15:36
If Miami beats Louisville in the finale of the regular season,
15:40
this will be the most successful regular season team
15:43
in Hurricane's history.
15:45
Jay Lucas has raised the bar
15:47
and it's that extra work off the court,
15:49
dialing in every detail,
15:50
given it that extra fire, the grit, and I never quit.
15:53
We put the same passion into every model.
15:56
Highlights make the real what it took to get there

16:16

This is the five hour energy flavor draft
17:12
with 18 different flavors to choose from,
17:14
including new options like confetti craze,
17:16
fruity rainbow or cotton candy.
17:18
There is something for everyone.
17:19
The board is set, the flavors are ready.
17:22
I got my number one overall pick ready
17:24
for the five hour energy flavor draft.
17:26
Guys, I'm gonna go with a sleeper at number one
17:29
because I just tried the new confetti craze flavor.
17:32
I didn't think I was gonna like it, but folks,
17:35
this is a delicious blend of rich and buttery,
17:38
fresh baked confetti cake, smooth vanilla frosting,
17:41
and a sprinkle of sweetness in every sip.
17:43
I've loved birthday cake when I was a little kid.
17:45
Confetti craze absolutely blew me away.
17:48
And of course, for my sleeper in this draft,
17:51
sour apple, the apple that bites back, a crisp,
17:55
There are so many great flavors you haven't even tried yet.
17:58
Find your new favorite flavor
17:59
of five hour energy shots available online
18:02
at fivehourenergy.com or on Amazon.
18:08
Thank you for making locked on canes your first listen.
18:11
And I apologize for falling for the rage bait.
18:15
But again, like you can't look me in the eyes and tell me
18:20
that there are 10 quarterbacks in power for football
18:25
who are better than Darian Mensa right now.
18:28
Like you can't like you can't tell me that and expect it.
18:31
If you want to punish the guy for leaving Duke in a way
18:34
that you didn't like or maybe you don't like Miami
18:38
for whatever reason, because there are a lot of people
18:40
that don't, but you're really telling me
18:43
that all these quarterbacks are better than Darian Mensa.
18:46
Chip on the shoulder is gonna be massive this year folks.
18:49
And yeah, listen, for Mensa to have success this year,
18:54
of course we're hoping Miami's offensive line
18:58
with four new starters can reach the levels of domination
19:02
they had for the last couple of years.
19:04
I believe in their talent.
19:06
I certainly believe in their coaching.
19:08
It's just a matter of new starters.
19:12
Guys like Jackson Cantwell who probably be a starter this year.
19:16
A guy like Max Buchanan who may become a first time starter
19:20
and Matt McCoy, Samson Okunola taking on bigger roles.
19:26
Brian Rodriguez gets the opportunity
19:28
to be a full time starter in his sixth year.
19:30
Like you need these guys to prove it out there.
19:33
But I trust Mensa's gonna have excellent protection
19:36
and he's certainly gonna have weapons
19:38
from the running back room headlines
19:40
by Mark Fletcher Jr.
19:42
We'd like to see Tight End take a step forward
19:45
in the passing game, but crazy thing is,
19:48
even if they don't, like even if Tight Ends
19:50
don't take a big step forward as receivers
19:53
this year compared to last year,
19:55
Miami is so loaded at wide out.
19:58
Mensa's gonna have plenty of options.
20:00
And our friends at Pro Football Focus College,
20:05
I think this was penned by my guy Max Chadwick
20:09
who was just on the show earlier this week.
20:13
He put out and these are largely analytics based
20:17
His top 10 returning wide receivers
20:21
for the 2026 season.
20:23
Top 10 with one honorable mention, okay?
20:26
Number one, not surprisingly,
20:30
Jeremiah Smith at Ohio State.
20:32
But number two on his list, Malachi Tony
20:36
from the University of Miami.
20:38
He says while they weren't quite as dominant
20:40
as Jeremiah Smith's 2024 campaign,
20:43
Tony's numbers from this past year
20:46
are up there with the best seasons
20:47
from a true freshman wide receiver
20:49
in college football history.
20:51
Like Smith in 2024, he was the most valuable
20:54
wide out in America according to our wins
20:56
above average metrics.
20:58
Tony's 841 yards after the catch
21:01
were the most in FBS as were his 33 forced mistakels
21:06
That was incredible.
21:07
The former three star recruit also led the nation
21:10
with 58 receptions that went either
21:12
for a first down or a touchdown.
21:15
While his 1211 receiving yards were second
21:18
to only Smith in the power four,
21:20
not to mention Tony reclassified in high school
21:22
and should only be earning his freshman year this upcoming
21:25
or entering his freshman year, this upcoming season.
21:29
So then you've got KJ Duff from Rutgers,
21:33
Mario Craver from Texas A&M,
21:36
Cam Cole Mettit, Texas, Ryan Williams at Bama,
21:39
Deuce Robinson at Florida State,
21:42
Charlie Becker from Indiana,
21:44
Amari Thomas from Houston,
21:46
and Wyatt Young from Oklahoma State.
21:49
Now, none of the schools on this list
21:52
have two receivers in the top 10,
21:54
but here's what Miami does have,
21:56
the only honorable mention
21:58
who's essentially a co-ten in Cooper Barcade.
22:01
So Miami, if you go by the top 11,
22:04
Miami is the only school with two receivers mentioned
22:07
and I think I can make an argument.
22:09
I'm not as upset about this one as I was
22:11
about Mensa being left out of the top 10 for quarterbacks,
22:14
but I think I could even make an argument
22:16
for Cooper Barcade being top 10
22:18
because he put up bigger receiving numbers
22:20
than a lot of the guys ranked in front of him.
22:23
And you know, listen,
22:24
Tony put up crazy numbers, but he had 16 games.
22:29
What did Jeremiah Smith have 14, 15 games?
22:33
Cooper Barcade played 13 games this past season.
22:37
For his honorable mention,
22:38
he spent the first three years of his career at Harvard
22:42
and tallied 1,084 receiving yards
22:45
during the final season of his career with the Crimson.
22:48
He transferred to Duke for 2025.
22:50
It was even more productive,
22:52
placing fifth in the power five
22:55
with a little over 1,100 receiving yards.
22:57
Barcade followed his starting quarterback,
22:59
Darian Mensa to Miami this off season.
23:02
He and Malachi Tony form arguably
23:05
the best receiver duo in the countries.
23:08
Best receiver duo in the country,
23:10
Malachi Tony and Cooper Barcade.
23:13
And as we talked about this morning, you know,
23:15
things that we're looking for in spring ball,
23:18
who else is going to emerge?
23:22
is he gonna perhaps grab the starting X receiver spot
23:25
with his big body six foot four, 215 plus pounds,
23:30
his speed, his ability to create separation
23:33
but also fight for contested catches.
23:35
He had a lot of those,
23:36
including one handed grabs and practices last year.
23:39
You know, Cam Von, Dre Jacobs,
23:42
who both come in as highly touted transfers.
23:44
I know Barcade takes a lot of headlines away from those guys,
23:47
but they're both really, really good.
23:49
Dale and Upshaw and Miami also has some true freshmen
23:52
who I think can play.
23:53
You hear a lot of good off season workout buzz
23:56
about Samorian Wingo
23:59
and about Milan Paris and Vance Spafford.
24:03
Like Spafford is so fast running a 4-3-3.
24:07
You gotta wonder if we find ways to get him on the field
24:09
because that's crazy speed.
24:12
Maybe he gets opportunities to be a kick or punt return.
24:15
I mean, punt returning probably will be the Malachi Tony show
24:17
again, but maybe Vance Spafford,
24:20
if they trust him back there can get opportunities
24:22
to return kicks because he has absolute blazing speed.
24:25
So Miami, arguably the top receiver duo in the country
24:31
and allegedly not a top 10 quarterback.
24:35
We'll see about that one.
