And on today's show, I'll dive into how NBA expansion could impact the Nets
rebuild.
News that Michael Porter Jr. is out for multiple weeks with a hamstring injury.
And where Brooklyn is most likely to finish in the draft lottery race.
Let's go.
Back on the show now.
We got Lucas Kaplan of Nets daily for part two of our FANTAKE Friday episode.
Rolling on through it next question.
What impact do you think NBA expansion will have on the Nets future plans?
I believe the Nets front office had some idea these plans would be coming to
a head during their rebuild.
So do you think the way they positioned themselves has been to their benefit?
That's from Miz.
Yes, this has been big news that the NBA is going to vote on its
expansion with the two sites, two teams, Las Vegas and Seattle.
That has been the talk of a lot of league circles over the last week.
And you know, what kind of impact will I think it will have on the Nets future
plans? I think it's going to have a huge impact on teams the way that they
build their rosters out for the next couple of seasons.
So I think the date was before the 2027 28 season.
So before that season, if they have an expansion draft, teams will be able to
protect eight players.
So I would expect with that you would see a lot of teams making consolidation
moves ahead of time to kind of, you know, really get the best eight that they
could not to sacrifice guys outside of that eight who I think they think are
going to have that impact.
Well, look, the Nets are a team that has five rookie first round picks on the
team right now.
So, you know, by then, after next season, I think you'll have a better sense of
which of those guys are going to be keepers and which guys won't.
But it'll definitely play a role in how they're building out.
And I think it's going to be one of the most interesting team building
developments that we've seen for all teams across the NBA in the last few
decades.
I mean, it's really going to be fascinating to see how that plays out.
But Lucas, what's your opinion on its expansion?
The impact on the Nets, everything involving that conversation.
I think it's a little bit too early to really know what, how it will affect
the Nets.
I mean, when would the draft be right?
Well, the first season, those teams, it's at 20, 27, 28, I think.
So it would be after next season.
Oh, 27, 28.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm pretty sure.
Yeah.
No, you're getting 28, but I'll look it up.
Yeah, I thought it was 28, 29.
That it's tough to really plan for because you get to protect eight guys.
And I, you know, I've said it all year and last year.
And I'm not exactly, you're right.
It's 20, 28, 29.
So it would be two more seasons.
So it would be like the rookies right now be going into their fourth season.
Yes.
Yes.
And, you know, you need to build a very deep roster to compete in today's NBA.
Like, if it's not for nothing else, the regular season is just such a grind
that your 10th, 11th, 12th guys are going to need to play and win you some games.
Like, I can't, it sounds crazy to say, but I know that J will, Jalen Williams on the Thunder
center.
If he's not there, their record is worse this season.
You know, and he might not play a ton of the playoffs.
And even Jared McCain, who they acquired has been really good.
Like, and the Pacers last year, I mean, TJ McConnell plays more like these guys that are closer
to the 10th man in the rotation that are really good NBA players.
That's how you win over, over time in the regular season.
And so I don't think that, I don't think you can really, you know, build a roster around that.
I think you've got to, you know, the next one to be good by then, they build the best roster they can.
And when, when we get to that bridge, like, protect your best eight guys and live with it.
You know, that's kind of a boring answer, but I don't really see it impacting them too much,
but maybe I'm just being naive.
I mean, I think it's tough to forecast how the impact of something like that will go out,
because we haven't really been covering the league or seen something like that in our lifetime.
I mean, since like the Bobcats came back into the league.
But I do think that you will see, like, Chicanery and maneuvering when you get to that time in terms of consolidation.
I mean, if you have a really good, like, 7, 8, 9, 10 on your roster,
if you can consolidate some of those guys and get a better player and then leave it.
So your, you know, 9th 10th players aren't as good once the expansion draft comes around.
That I think will be a big part of the calculus of a lot of these teams.
You can also see teams, you know, strategically keeping some players who are maybe contracts that they don't want in order
to maybe hope that they get taken off their books because they are impact players.
And the salary cap rules actually apply differently to those expansion teams during the first two years that they will be in the league.
I think it's going to be fascinating to see how it plays out.
And I think as we get closer, you'll have a lot of front office people and analysts kind of telling you how they think it will play out.
But in the next question on this theme, imagine there was an NBA expansion draft this off season.
You can only, you can only protect eight players.
Who would you want under protection?
That's from Johnson, Lucas.
You can go first on this one. I've got my eight guys.
How about we answer? I feel like we've answered this one.
We did it early in the season, but maybe our answers have changed.
Okay.
And this is assuming, are we including guys that are set up to be free agents?
Yeah, just the eight guys on the roster right now, I think.
I would take, um,
Clowny, Clackston, Dayrun, Wolf, MPJ is five,
Yegor, six.
Oh, man.
Yeah.
And then, uh, do I want to, uh, do I want to say Drake and Nolan for eight?
And then that leaves out Zaire and Tyson.
How many do you have there? That was six.
That's, yeah.
So it was six without, and then the last four are Drake, Nolan, Zaire and, uh,
my knot.
I said, I think I was, I said Tyson, maybe, but I'm looking at Josh, my knot.
Um, so two of those four.
I don't know.
Taking all four rookies is like, I probably don't need to do that.
I would probably sit down and maybe not take one of the rookies in order to get my knot or Zaire,
but, uh, yeah, you say you're eight and then I'll, I'll, I'll finalize mine.
Yeah, I think I, we had the same six at the top, which was MPJ, Clackston,
Dayrun, Noah, Yegor, Nolan.
Those are the sixth.
I would put Danny in as the seventh.
And then that leaves you with the three guys, uh, which is Drake,
my knot, Zaire for that last spot.
It's tough.
I mean, I'd probably just go with Drake, you know, it's tough because like,
you do have to fill out the rest of your roster and you're leaving yourself with a lot of rookies in that conversation.
But if we're talking about like, if it's Drake versus Zaire or my knot,
I'm not the highest on Zaire's long-term outlook.
I like mine up, but he is four years older than Drake.
Honestly, my knot, like, I think that entered that conversation for me.
Maybe I'm sipping the cool aid a little bit too much, but I'd go with Drake.
I mean, I'm not going to, I'm not going to write him off just yet,
even if there are some concerns about his, how his rookie season has played out.
But it's kind of like the mystery box of Drake versus what you kind of already know that you have with Zaire.
So that's kind of the reason that I went with it.
And my knot is a little bit of a wild card.
Yeah.
I think I would have to really sit down and make a tough call on one of the rookies and probably take either.
And, and, and then think about getting my knot or Zaire in there,
especially if we're grounded in like today's reality.
And you know, they want to compete next season.
Yeah, I just think it's like you got to make tough decisions sometimes.
And I think it's okay to say I don't think all four rookies will be good rotation players.
Now let me like nut up and, and, and, and stand on the one that I don't think will be.
Yeah, and it's also like if you're setting, yeah, if you're setting yourself up for next season,
it's tough.
If you're top eight guys that you protect, protect, you have four rookies in there.
Like you're trying to, you know, you need some guys a little bit more experience this season.
So I totally hear you there and there's definitely valid, you know, valid arguments on both sides.
We got a lot more questions.
We got some about the next tanking strategy.
How they're going to go about that for the rest of the season.
The draft lottery standing.
They're most, they're most likely position to end up.
So we'll get into all that.
We continue locked on nets after a quick break.

Coming back from the break, continuing with today's Lockdown Nets episode.
On this fan take Friday, Luke and I had actually pre-recorded this with some questions
about whether the nets are going to shut MPJ down.
We both gave our opinions.
But then we got news right after recording that the nets dropped on MPJ on the injury
or front, which was that Michael Porter-Jinger has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain
and that he will be sidelined for two to three weeks or he'll be re-evaluated in two to three weeks.
So obviously big injury news from the nets there.
And two to three weeks, that's putting you right up until usually you go on the long end of that timeline.
So three weeks would put the nets right up until, let me say it's March 19th.
Now three weeks would put you right to April 2nd.
The net season ends like a week after that.
So reading the tea leaves, Michael Porter-Jinger effectively shut down for the season.
It seems like an MPJ had missed before this.
The last three games, the last four games due to an ankle sprain.
And then he didn't work out on Wednesday according to Georgia Fernandez.
And then that's put him on the injury report.
But that game against the thunder with left hamstring awareness.
And we talked to Georgia before that thunder game.
And he said that MPJ was, you know, left hamstring awareness means he was experiencing some tightness.
So he was going through that workout.
He felt some tightness in the hamstring.
They got an MRI on it after that revealed the hamstring strain.
And then they put out that timeline of two to three weeks, which basically means that he's joining
the gig where Joe and David Ron Sharp as good guys were shut down for the season.
I could not see the nets, you know, given the tank race, given all this stuff, bringing MPJ back to play
in like the final, you know, four or five games of the year that just would make zero sense.
So that's big entry news.
And naturally like with where the nets are out in the tank race, some people are going to question the legitimacy of these injuries.
I can tell you that I saw Michael Porter-Jinger in Philadelphia.
I saw his ankle.
It was swollen.
he was getting work done on it, that injury is legitimate.
You can't just say that he has an hamstring injury
saying that you had an MRI when there's no truth to that.
Like that's just not how this works with the MBA.
So these are legitimate injuries.
You could argue that maybe he would be playing
through that ankle injury.
Maybe he'd be playing through some things.
Maybe, you know, Yeg or Joe Mandir on sharp
would be playing through those if the nets were playing
for the playoffs and if they were not eliminated
at this point, but nevertheless,
these are legitimate injuries.
And this is gonna be big for the nets
because, you know, while they've lost a lot as of late,
I mean, they have a really easy remaining strength of schedule.
Like you look at the remaining games
that they have.
And after this next game on Friday,
they have Sacramento, Portland, Golden State, Los Angeles,
Sacramento, Charlotte, Atlanta, Washington, Milwaukee,
Indiana, Milwaukee, Toronto.
So that's the easiest remaining strength of schedule in the NBA.
And you look at it like after this game against the Knicks,
they have two matchups with Sacramento,
two matchups with Sacramento,
two matchups with the Bucks were gonna be tanking by that.
And they have matchups with the Pacers and the Wizards.
And that's, you know, on top of games against teams like,
you know, Portland's not a juggernaut by any means.
The Warriors without Steph Curry, the Hawks, the Raptors.
Like these are not exactly really difficult games
outside of the Knicks and the Lakers, I would say.
So MPJ being shut down for the season alongside guys
like Yeg or Joe Mand, guys like Dave Ron Sharpe,
that's obviously gonna bode well for the nets tank.
You know, Noah Clowney also went out of the Oklahoma City,
the lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder with the wrist brain.
He said he's okay, but he's gonna miss the game against Knicks
on Friday.
So all these injuries and that's are giving it extended minutes
to their two way guys, to Malakai Smith on the 10-day contract,
to Josh Mino, Chaya Baji.
So, you know, all of this obviously is not hurting the nets
tanking pursuits or their spot in the draft lottery race.
And you look at it approaching the stretch of schedule,
which is very easy.
The nets are in third right now,
but they're only, they have one fewer win than the Kings
who are in fourth.
They have one more than the Wizards in third
and they have two more than the Pacers in first.
And they, you know, have games against all of those teams
to close the season.
Wizards in second, excuse me,
but they have games against all those teams
to close the season.
So they could, you know, fall to fourth,
they could be in first.
It all depends obviously on, you know,
how they operate the tank, some of these injury news,
but they have been, you know,
it seems like pivoting to going about this
in a more aggressive manner during these recent games.
So wanted to throw out that empty MPJ injury update,
talk about its implications on the nets,
their traffic, all that, but getting back to Lucas,
we still have some more questions with both of us.
So back to him now.
Next question on the tank note,
only a couple of weeks left in the NBA season.
Where do we fall in the standings when it's all set
and done?
That's from pre-selected currency.
I would probably say third where they are right now,
third or fourth.
Like that's my read on it.
I don't think that they're going to pass Washington.
I don't think they're going to pass Indiana.
They could, like, it's very realistic
because they have games against both of those teams,
but those teams are, you know,
I think Indiana's lost 14 straight,
Washington's lost like 10 or 11 straight.
It's definitely possible with how hard the nets have been
taking as of late, but I just, my read on it is like,
when they get to these really, you know,
they're the easiest remaining schedule in the league,
as I said, like down the stretch of the season,
they have two Sacramento matchups,
they have two Milwaukee matchups
who are going to be tanking at that point,
and they have Indiana and Washington also.
So I'd say third or fourth.
What do you think, Lucas?
My guess is third.
I think Sacramento, I don't trust them,
I don't trust them not to win too many games.
I go third.
I think it's going to be really hard to catch Indiana.
Washington and frankly, third is not too bad
of a result for the season.
No, I think a, you know, a lot of fans
would have taken third midway through the year after that,
like seven and three stretch.
If you said we could end up in the third lottery spot,
I think a lot of fans would have said yes.
So got a few more questions,
closing out part two of this fan take Friday episode.

All right, coming back from the break.
Close and out today is locked on Nets episode
part two of this fan take Friday with Lucas Kaplan.
Rolling on through your remaining takes and questions.
Next question.
Who is the coolest celebrity you have met
during your time on the beat?
Retired players included.
What do you do with your time at games
like tonight against the thunder
has to be painful to have to stay there the entire time?
That is from Simon.
Coolest celebrity I've met.
I mean, I've interviewed and scrummed
and also gotten to say hi one on one to Jason Kidd
several times and I grew up in New Jersey.
I grew up watching the Nets Jason Kidd
was one of the best players in the league.
He was a guy who was an MVP candidate
during his time with the Nets.
He brought the Nets from a 20 whatever team
to a 50 win team just in one season by getting him there
and getting stuff on Marbury out of there.
So he has been based on what I watch growing up.
It's been pretty cool to get to ask him questions
to get to talk to him on a few separate occasions.
That would be my answer, Lucas.
What about you?
The coolest experience I've had, I think,
is easier for me to answer.
I've met, especially honestly on the women's basketball side
of things, the access is a little bit more like you can just
find yourself talking one on one to Brianna Stewart
who's one of the greatest players ever.
But one of the coolest experiences I've had,
Rick Carlisle sat next to me at a summer league game.
Randomly I'm just sitting there on Meteorow and a boy.
I know I hear a guy tab me on the shoulder or I feel it.
And he's like, modify sit here and I'm like, oh yeah.
And this is one of the first summer leagues I went to
and I was like nervous and we're watching the Nets
were playing the Pacers, but he caught there
for the last fourth quarter of the game before.
And I'm just like, you know, we're making small talk,
like watching the game.
I'm like really trying to make sure I'm making
really smart observations about like whoever's on the court.
But that was cool.
That's like a cool, very NBA reportery experience,
especially at summer league.
And then what do I do with my time here in games?
I write and occasionally we commiserate more than occasionally.
But yeah, I would say in the game like I'm working.
We're working.
Working hard.
I'd say in a game like last night against the thunder,
there can be a little bit more commiserating,
especially when it's that much of a blowout
during the second half.
Yeah, working.
I mean, me, I'm writing, I'm preparing stuff
for the podcasts, but yeah, that's pretty much
what goes on for me.
Anything to add there, Lucas?
No, I mean, you know, when the story,
it always helps when the story is,
I have to write game recaps a lot of the time when I'm there.
It always helps when the story is done by halftime.
Other times, I'll be writing something for the next day.
If there's an off day, you want to have something up
for when they're not playing.
But yeah, it's not very exciting,
especially for a random regular season game covering
a playoff game, like a finals game,
that gets pretty crazy.
All right, next question, Eric,
what is your go-to Italian sub?
And who is an underrated player in the league?
That would be a good trade target for the Nexus off season.
That's from Brain Dead NBA.
That question came in during the Thunder Games
during the second half.
I guess Brain Dead NBA was like,
I'm craving an Italian sub right now.
I wonder what Eric would order.
But I actually have, you know, I grew up in North Jersey.
So there is no shortage of delis where you get great stuff.
My go-to usually would be, you know,
like a chicken cutlet with fresh muts,
roasted red peppers, a little like balsamic on a sub
or like on Shabbata, that has always been my go-to that,
or just like an Italian, a classic Italian.
But, you know, where I'm at, we got,
we got some good delis.
So that has been a luxury of growing up in North Jersey, for sure.
Yeah, I got, yeah, I'm much more of a, you know,
living in the city, all the bodegas, all the sandwich.
Like, it's not necessarily super Italian, you know,
sandwich making all the time.
But terms of an Italian sub, man, a good, a good,
a good chicken cutlet sub is hard to beat.
I really like, honestly, a roasted eggplant,
like almost an eggplant parmesan sort of thing
from feeling a little bit healthier.
I don't know, I don't really have a go-to sub.
But any, they're all good.
And maybe the next time we can do, like,
the Brooklyn Nets as Italian subs, like,
we can, who's your underrated NBA player?
I got to think about this.
I mean, we just watched the thunder last night,
so that's so fresh in my mind.
I don't know how underrated those guys are,
but they're just like, I don't think so.
Dude, they're like 12 deep, where I'm like, oh my god.
Yeah.
One of these guys, like I got asked this question
on last week's mailbag, where it was like, you know,
what kind of guys would the Nets go after on the trade market?
And I was like, guys on teams that don't have
necessarily like huge opportunity right now,
but could pop if they got to a rebuilding team
or something like that.
And you just look at the thunder with like,
I mean, case in Wallace, like,
it's kind of like no longer any kind of a secret,
but like him, Aaron Wiggins, like, Jay Mitchell,
they just have so many guys where I'm like, oh my god,
like, you know, they should, like, one of these guys,
you know, could just be like if the Nets
or some other team could overpay for them,
they could really be something there.
But.
Dude, talk about it.
Talk about, I'm sure I do.
I'm like blanking now, but I'm when guys come to town,
I'm like, oh, this guy's underrated, that guy's underrated.
Portland was just in town.
I think like Klingon's really legit.
Yeah, I don't think he's underrated.
I'm trying to think of guys that are like,
that people don't think are good.
Not under the radar, you know?
Like Klingon might be under the radar,
but most everybody thinks he's good.
I don't know.
I was like, I was talking about last night,
like I think Shay is still kind of underrated historically
and like consensus wise, honestly.
Like, I don't think a lot of people, in my opinion,
we're getting a little off topic, but like,
seriously, the conversations that he's putting himself in
in my opinion are higher than you think.
That's what I've heard some.
I've heard some podcasters like mentioning his name
in the last few weeks with like MJ,
like not that he's Michael Jordan, but like,
he's having that level of impact right now.
I mean, he might be, he might be having,
it's like best guard seasons ever.
You could really make an argument that over the last 50 years,
it's magic MJ, Steph, Shay.
And I think I would make that argument.
I might be forgetting someone, but like the, like, yeah.
We talked to Degno before the game and after the game,
I was in those press conferences and he just said that
the playmaking leap that he's had in terms of being like
an anticipatory passer against all these coverages,
the efficiency from the mid-range and from three
is just absolutely insane.
Like, he's just, he's unbelievable.
Do you like the turnover rate is absolutely out of this world
for how much he's doing for them?
So, I mean, you look at them, they're on pace to win.
What, like, the high 60s games and Jalen Williams
has barely played this season and not been good when he has
because he's been hurt.
Like, you don't get to that point without somebody,
you know, just putting on a historic performance.
Yeah, I don't want to hear about the foul baiting ever again.
I just, I'm so over it.
I was just thinking about the Italian subs again.
I live, my girlfriend lives right next to Regina's
grocery, the low-reside, which makes some great Italian subs.
If you ever go there, you would love the Uncle Jimmy.
Pajudo, Mordadella, mozzarella, sofrasada, hot peppers,
and olive oil.
That's my, that's my, that's my go-to there.
The Uncle Jimmy.
Yeah, now that Lucas gave somebody a plug,
I got a shout out, Petrillo's deli.
If you guys, anybody's in North Jersey
in Bergen County, North failure in New Jersey,
Petrillo's fantastic spot, family-owned,
been going there forever in New York, right?
Lucas, that's all I got with you on this two-parter
