Let's all go to the lobby. Let's all go to the lobby. The Chalk of the Rope. You can go now, slow to creep. Hello, horror hounds. And welcome to NowSlaying. And it's Les Podcast Production, where we review the latest and greatest in the world of horror. I'm your humble host, Rowan. And it's Mike back again. It's been a little while, I think, since we have had you on NowSlaying. This is that fee for this. Oh my god, the vicious name. Listen, it kind of went down in history. I was like running on fumes. Actually, much like I am tonight, Row always does this to me. He's like, we're going to do a NowSlaying and conscripts me to go see a movie and I'm like, either I have to work before dawn the next morning or I worked before dawn the day. So here we are, I'm going to be running on fumes

and probably acting like a fool. But here we are. Yeah, it's always the best time. So today we're going to be talking about In Cityus out of the further, which was released August 21st, 2026. So before we get into all the good stuff, Mike, I dragged you. I made you go see this. Jill said no, F and way. Jill did the last in Cityus with me in Cityus Red Door, or the Red Door, a franchise. We have other than that, have never reviewed on the main show. We've never done an in Cityus movie. We've also never done like a conjuring movie. We kind of backed away from that part of James Wands career, apparently. We did, didn't we? Yeah, I don't know. I feel like maybe some people on the podcast think that it's like too basic. Is it all of us? I really feel like none of us. I think about it. I only saw the first in Cityus, I mean, no, it was probably a few years ago now.

It was probably maybe four years ago. But it was probably multi, there was probably at least three or four of them at that point. Yeah. And it's funny because when you asked me to go see this and I was like, I haven't seen barely any of the other ones. You're like even better. I was thinking about it and I was like, okay, I know I saw the first one. And I thought this was like the third or maybe fourth. So I said there's no way I saw more than the first one. And now I'm thinking maybe I even saw the second one. And I just like completely blocked it from my memory. I just don't remember anything about it. It just made no impact. The second one, it's been a while since I actually watched all these. Similar to you, right? I talked about this when we did the right door. But like same as you only a couple of years ago, I saw these for the first time where I actually sat down. I was like, hey, I'm gonna watch this whole series. It might have been before we did the right door so that I knew what was going on. I mean, you're more ambitious than me. I just said to let me watch the first one. So I know what everyone's talking about.

But I believe one and two, they kind of are very tied in where it's like Patrick Wilson. Yes, yes. And that's, see, I remember him. And I was like, that's why I thought there was only like two of them. Yeah. And then I think after that is when they kind of like break up into other people and the like universe or whatever. But they always seem to, yeah, kind of come back. So we're like, were you aware this was even out? Like was this on your radar? I'm gonna assume it wasn't on your watch list. That's for sure. I mean, it wasn't on my watch list. You are right about that. I was aware of it because I think I'm pretty sure it was the fateful day that I went to see obsession. My birthday after working a five a.m. shift. And saying, I'm having an anxiety attack. So I'm going to treat myself to a movie by myself. And then went to see obsession. And it was like this was the worst idea I've ever had. But I'm pretty sure that either that or back rooms had the trailer for this.

And I remember sitting there going like for the first like 30 seconds. I was like, what the fuck is this? And then something came on the screen. And I was like, maybe it was like a red. Yeah. Like one of the words that they put up on the screen had like one red lighter. And I was like, oh my god, this is another fucking insidious movie. And sure enough, fucking insidious. I was like, the only thing that's going to keep me from throwing a tomato with the screen right now is effluent cheese. And so luckily for them, there was no tomato throwing. I was going to say very kind of small marketing campaign. That was the only way I heard tell of it. And then when it was out, I don't think I saw it. And I only knew it was out. I only knew it was out because I was obsessively checking shit a plex's website for Camp Me As might be put up, which it never was here. So fuck shit a plex by the way. Yes, we were trying to do that for now, Slane. And our Nova Scotia only got that like for a week and like one centiplex. And then they left.

So yeah, I saw Halifax got it. Yeah, it just didn't keep it very long. So unfortunately, I feel like that's getting reviewed at the end of the year for the ones we missed. But yeah, I was going to say the red door. I feel like I couldn't even turn on YouTube or anything without like being bombarded with like trailers or pop-ups. Where this one was just, I don't think I ever saw a trailer for it. And I just knew what was coming. It's been teased for a couple of years because every time me and Colton do what's coming this year episode pops up. Yeah, this, yeah, this was I think originally this was called in city is threads or maybe that's a different movie because from my understanding it was what is his name? The guy from a turn old. Oh, you're talking about the fucking buff dude. Yeah, he's like, oh my god, I know. And he's so hot. I'm trying to remember his name now. Come on, come on.

Come on, John. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he is very funny. He's always in comedic stuff. Yeah, that's why I thought maybe he is in a small role in that. I don't know. But yes, he's so good looking. That was real sad just to wait to like guys trying to remember this insanely and talented. Well, listen, you, you mixed people up. You had me like, I can't pronounce white people's name. So like giving any name with like flair and style, I'm screwed. I just can't do it. But he was supposed to be the star of this in city is thread. So I don't know if maybe that is a different one that's going to be coming out or if that got canned and this ended up being it. Because I do remember the whole thing about that in city is was that it was going to be set in the world of in city is. But they said it didn't necessarily have anything to do with that story. So that's why I kind of believe it must have transformed into this.

Because we'll talk about what they've done with this. But with that, let's get into the synopsis before we get into all the rest of this stuff. And find out is in city is a banner or is it just going to be insidiously dripping into me in my relationship that I made him go see this. And he'll take me for the rest of his life. We'll find out after the trailer. All right. I'm just going to take a look inside. Looks like there's something stuck in here. Gemma, listen to me. You can do something I didn't know was possible. You can bring gameins back to the human world permanently. In city is out of the further is directed and written by Jacob Chase.

And the synopsis is as follows. Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, discovers she can travel into the further, where she possesses an ability to bring what lives there back to the real world. So here on now, it's like, and we like to start with the spoiler free section first. Mike, I don't we're going to have that much to talk about in the spoiler free section. This isn't like, I highly, I think it's brought in the like 18th movie here. So like, you know, at this point, we might be the ones that are kind of out of the loop on insidious in the going on of that. Oh, 100% I was sitting there going, I need to call my friend from the States and ask him, can you please quickly explain the Lord to me because I don't remember from the first movie that I sound like five years ago. What the fuck the story is like who wants to be a millionaire? You're getting that like life line. Yeah, my life line. I'm literally I'm going to be a Tommy Texter.

Yeah. In the middle of the movie, I'm like, hang on guys. I have to FaceTime somebody explain the movie to me. So without what are some of your initial spoiler free thoughts about this one? Okay. So spoiler free. Oh, okay. So in the spoiler free, we'll start off with me having a bone to pick with you and then with the movie. Okay. So it's been deferred, you know, again, behind the curtain. Look, it's been a rough couple of days because I've been going back and forth on whether I want to see this or not and getting mad at row, especially because my schedule was really fucked up today. So I've been texting them like mad all day. Like, yeah, I can't believe you did this to me. But then I texted them and said, okay, listen, this was like probably 20 minutes before the movie started. Like, you know what? You could have sold this to me very easily if you had told me that Brandon pray is in it. And he goes, oh, cool.

And I was like, yeah, so I mean, he was just like Lin Shea, you know, like knowing that I like worship the granche walks on. But I was like, yeah, if you had just said that he was in it, I would have been like, cool. I won't even like argue with you about this. So I was like going into it and I was fine and kind of like happy and, you know, anticipating it even for like this small threat of anticipation. And then the movie starts, he gets introduced, he's in the dentist chair, which also bone to pick because I hate fucking dental shit. And there was like 10 solid minutes in dentist office and I was like, fuck my life. Fuck my absolute life. But anyway, and it's all fine and good. And then this is not a spoiler because then the next time you see him, he's in a fucking copy uniform. And I was like, oh, cool, cool. Okay. Now I don't give a fuck about him anymore. I was like, fuck, why did you do this? It's like they knew that I was going to be excited that he was in it. And they're like, how can we fuck over Mike? Like, how can we just make him absolutely hate his life? And they did.

Well, maybe so maybe they're waiting for like the sequel to this for you to find out that the cop uniform actually rips off on the sides and daylights. Actually, a stripper is actually cop stripper. No, yeah, no, see, you can't, yeah, you can't be daylighting as a cop. That's still bad. He needs to be a stripper who just has a cop costume in a car. He stole a cop car also. And a car. You can still anybody can paint a fucking car and like put some lights on. I like, what can care is anybody can do that. Literally slap a siren on it, spray paint gets spray paint side of it. Like I don't know. I mean the real sad part of this story is the fact that when you brought that up to me that I didn't tell you this. I didn't even remember this was the guy from Noop. I know because you were like, okay, so Rowan had seen it before me, FYI. Yeah. So he knew more about it than I did. And he's like, is that the boyfriend? And I was like, I don't fucking know who he is. I'm waiting. I'm literally sitting here where my popcorn waiting for the movie to start. And then I said, well, it's the guy from Noop. And he goes, oh, that's what I know from him. Like he was one of the main characters in that movie.

Yeah, geez. I mean, I never changed. I really should have known you should have. But yeah, I was going to say, I don't know how you felt about it. I kind of felt from my memory of how these insidious movies look. I thought it was very interesting that I think it'll be easier to get more into in the spoiler section. But I thought this really shifted the tone and what these movies are about and how these movies look more so than any of the other ones. I think there's like obvious changes to the franchise that are being done here that, you know, I think Jacob Chase. I don't know if he's, this seems like it's going to be a financial success. So I don't know maybe the little help him keep helping more of these. I can't imagine this cost that much money to me. No, this was like an $18 million movie. It's already made almost 70. Yeah, there's going to be at least two more. I've never seen Jacob Chase's other movie, which came out during Coliseum.

Oh, I was going to say, has he, I assume this was a guy that has done a bunch of these? No, no, no, he's literally done like one other movie. It's our Jillian Jacobs and a kid. Okay. It was called Come Play. And I think it was about like a kid drawing like an imaginary monster in the monsters becomes real or something. Like I've never seen it. I remember coming out during COVID because it was like one of the first movies that it was like, Oh, a new movie you can buy on like Blu-ray. Yeah. So, and I mean, I kind of feel like scream factory. I think picked it up and are releasing like a 4K of it or something. But I mean, they'll release whatever at this point. But so I don't know what a style is like. But yeah, I found that I thought this looked a lot different, a lot different type of scares than the other movies. Like they're definitely, I think going more so for this world building. I felt very similar to watching like a Marvel movie when I was watching this.

I thought that it was like definitely building out to where it's like, Oh, we, we want to like be able to sequelize this but not just sequelize it, but be able to have more people in this world. Not just kind of the original family or people having to do with the original family. 100% and I mean, again, I think I only saw the first one. And if I didn't, I only saw the second and it was that long ago and that whatever that I just don't remember. But I also feel like this whole movie, they were really trying to introduce a handful of like even though they were weren't given a whole lot to do. At least in the like, you know, when they go into the further. And you know, you've got your like ghosty demony things or dead people or whatever. They, you know, they were like kind of dropping in all these like and in all of the kind of dream further sequences and stuff. They were dropping in all these kind of like trying to be iconic like villains.

You know, I mean like people that they could probably pull for like say two sequels down. They're all remember the, you know, in some of these demons are from the sequels. Oh, okay. Yes. Yeah. I have no idea. So yeah. But I was going to say there was a lot that weren't but there were they may also made sure to like, but that proves my point. That they're using that to like, they're trying to, you know, build a like stable of recognizable like kind of cookie unique dead people demon things. I was going to say unfortunately for me and I know probably for you to these movies are never good for score guys like us. I, you know, I thought the music, the scoring was pretty, it was pretty whatever. I can't believe I'm saying this just because you know my age and how much I love it. But there's nothing I hate more than what I feel is like lazy 90s music placing where it's like they're obviously pandering to us. People are age and you know, so it's like having our early like she's always got your phones in.

She's always kind of jamming to like, okay, 90s, jams. But like what I was going to say, what is she even listening to? I didn't even hear any music. I like her was kind of like noise in the background because I was actually that was going to be one of my thoughts. And this is obviously spoiler free because I don't think anything happens. She spends like her whole like when it goes back and forth from her childhood to her adulthood with her headphones on listening to music. And that's obviously like a big coping mechanism. I was like, oh cool. They're going to have some really good songs playing and it'll be like, you know, they're kind of trying to do their like, deep bush, iconic needle drop in stranger things and they'll like maybe keep playing the same song or like the same type of music. Like she really likes Whitney Houston or whatever. And they just never did. I was like, there's no songs. There's two, uh, Ace of A songs in this. I literally didn't hear them. All I heard was like, ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch. You know, like when you take your headphones off and like lay them down and you're like across the room and you can just kind of hear a beat. Like that's all I heard. I would not- I didn't even recognize it as a song. I was like, oh, they were too cheap to pay for real music.

Yeah. So they, uh, they have girl in the line in all temptations by Ace of Bees playing. I don't even know either of those songs. No, I also was not super familiar with- And listen, I had the first Ace of Bees album when I was a kid, okay. Well, and you know, while you looked that out, that- that's why to me it was like one of those things where like they play songs that you're like, okay. But it's like we also didn't have to spend a bunch of money getting the music rights to. So it's like we can play something that you can tell is kind of like 90s era, but it's not so iconic that, uh, or at least, you know, for most people. I mean, listen, like I get it. They're on a like a budget constraint, but I didn't even like it would have been nice to have like like a cool needle drop or like, you know, a theme. Yeah. Like, you know, she was like a, like I said, like obsessed with, you know, keyboards or even obsessed with Ace of Bees if it was just like a prominently displayed.

But I would have even settled for if they had just gotten like a band camp artist of like a certain genre that does like, you know, 90s throwback or like synthwave or something to just do some like cheap tracks, right? Yeah. Kind of had a vibe and they could, but if they had been prominently used, like I thought that they could have used music a lot more in this. Because she always has her headphones in and I'm like, I actually, and that actually made me feel way more disconnected from the movie because I felt like she was blocking us out and we weren't being led in by the music. Like the music would have been our way to like get in with her, but I didn't feel like I was with her. I felt like she was somebody like, you know, when you're trying to talk to somebody that has headphones in and they're not paying attention to you or they're taking a call and it's like fuck, I just, I shut down and I kind of shut down because I couldn't hear what she's listening to. Yeah, no, I 100% agree with that. And like I said, what, and like you said, like, there'll be more to say about that in the spoiler section and all that kind of stuff. Overall though, you know, because we're talking about a Mulee Eve's character here, like I will say I didn't like hate the acting in this.

I'm like, I'm usually ripe with the series I don't like of just being like kind of bad acting, whatever. I thought a Mulee Eve was actually pretty good at what she was doing. I thought Island Austin was actually like a highlight who plays Maya who plays like Jeva's daughter. I thought for a kid acting pretty good. I was looking at your acting credits like her only other movie is a Christian movie about like rock band or something. It's like one of these like angel studios movies that came out in theaters like a year or two ago. Quite a, quite a job. Not like mega movie. So of course, you know, there's a little bit of me that's a little happy that it's like, okay, we jumped from the Christian movie to dip in the horror. Yeah, she's like, I know where the money is. Yeah, those, those bitches aren't going to the movie theater in droves. And then, you know, like you said, Brandon Pereira is it, I see I never say it right.

Pereira, yeah, it's fine. You don't ever say anybody's. I don't know how I like her. He was fine. He was fine. I mean, let's be realistic. He's just kind of like the hymnbo in this. Yeah. You know, the helpless boyfriend. Lin-Shea was good. I mean, I don't know if it's fair. She's underused. Yeah, I don't know if it's fair to like, rate Lin-Shea's performance because, A, I just wanted to keep getting checks and this is a great series for her to get checks. Yeah, 100%. I don't care if they make 100 of them as long as she's in everyone. And I mean, I get it. Like, you need someone that has the connective tissue all the way to the first one. You know, let her do it. I honestly like this a little better than I like. I believe. Yeah, I believe it was the red door one where I see these all running my mind together. Maybe it was one of the other sequels before red door. But like, there's one where we get flashbacks of a lease like younger. But what they did is they got an actress and then they put Lin-Shea's voice dubbed over the actress. I remember it was like really distracting.

And, uh, or maybe that was the second one. I don't know. I have a question for you now. Yes. Is this the series? I'm going to sound like a complete idiot. And it's like, oh, you have a horror movie podcast. You don't even know this. So shoot me. I am way more into classic as we know and like our house. That's my like, we all have our own things we bring to the table. And that's mine. Is this the series that the Ouija movies were spun off of? No. Oh, you're under all that. Because I saw the Ouija prequel. And I thought she was in that. Or I thought one of those characters was supposed to be like her as a young. Okay. I mean, I just very similar. I mean, let's be realistic. There's a lot of similarities also with this and conjuring and characters that are very similar. So I literally don't know. And I've seen multiple conjuring movies and I enjoyed them. But I could not tell you the difference between any of them. Like, I'm sorry. You need like a bise. Especially if you're going to use the same actors. Like, you've got to do something to really make it stylistically different.

Just go like full on Susperia, Dairy Origin. Do like insane crazy lighting or something for all of the movies so that I can in my mind separate the two. Or like crazy like heavy metal scores or something. Like just please. Like it's all just like slices of the same bread. You know, the only one I had kind of mean to note about was Sam Spruel who plays kind of the big bad in this Cyrus. Like a demon entity who, you know, is kind of doing his best like long legs impression essentially in this. And we'll get more into that. I mean, I don't think this is necessarily like creating an iconic character. I don't want to get too much into it because this is kind of kind of be my spoiler section kind of critique I have for this. But I do want to give a shout out Joseph Lopez who plays Lester who is in your favorite part of the movie when he's in the dentist office, the old man. Oh my God. I hate you.

He's just rocking out. He's kind of rolls. He also me and Colton reviewed the movie passenger, which was a horror movie that came out really early in the year that was a, you know, is one of these movies that wanted to kind of be an early ought 90s like quick movie. And he plays like the demon entity in that the passenger. And so I guess they just like put him in like creepy old makeup. Wait, is that the guy who was like one of the trio of old people? Yeah, he was like the main guy. He was the guy that went to the dentist. Okay. So yeah, I didn't know if you were talking about him or the like ghosty demon he dentist. Oh, yeah, that guy. Because I had to like fucking put my face down and I can't even take out my phone because I'm going to move the air. I was just like, lol, lol, lol, I need to start talking to myself. So I feel like for me, kind of my last spoiler free thoughts on this is kind of it's a shame because I think individually all the actors kind of did their jobs and some of them, some of them pretty well.

But I think there's a lot of issues with the filmmaking and the script and what I think this is really trying to do. That I think it just kind of failed all the actors like at the end of the day and that was a little disappointing. Because like I said, you know, as someone that doesn't overly like this series, mean, Exilia went and saw the red door together and it was like one of my top 10 most memorable theater moments with Exilia. Because in cities is always relied on all these kind of stupid jump scares. Oh, yeah, yeah. And of course the red door was always so funny because there was like 8 million jump scares like it had set a record for in cities. And Exilia like, you know, Exilia was jumping out of her chair just not because it was necessarily scared just because they were effective jump scares. Well, yeah, because it's like music. Yeah plays very loudly. And then this one I just felt they kind of dropped that idea and we're trying to do something else and trying to do more like I said.

Just like world building and setting up for the next one. There's just like a real marvel vacation to this entry, I think that just like kind of rubs me the wrong way. Unfortunately, do you have any more spoiler free thoughts or honestly, I'm pretty sure all of my thoughts are fairly spoilery. I guess it's it's hard to tell because I don't know what's the spoiler with these and what's not so then the important question that we have laugh for the couple important questions before getting into that as a was there any audience or were you the only one there in your the year. Okay, oh actually it's funny that you mentioned that because I took a picture to send to my friend who I was going to call me like tell me what's going on with the lore of this series because I don't remember of oh my god, okay, if you're Canadian, you know the like Tommy Texter like see these seat stealer or whatever and I had been texting him but it was like before the movie started so the lights were

still up and it was just the pre show shit and I was like this is me but also I realized that in my picture there was only one other person. So there was when I came in there was or when I bought my tickets there was four seats gone so I bought the fifth one then when I came in so I was on one end of the last row and there was two people on the other end and they obviously sat in the wrong scenes on the wrong side and I was like oh they're in my seat I was like well that's fine I'll just go over on the other end and sit in their seat no harm done and I was like oh I should check and make sure that this is not going to fill up right before the movie started and there was literally only two other seats sold so there was seven seats taken up which for two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday is like what you would expect but then so right before the movie started the last two people came in and I'm pretty sure about 20 30 minutes in they've got up and left again so I was like okay cool so the whole movie there was only five of us there

pretty much it was kind of crazy my theater I feel like it's kind of seen there was like I feel like there might only been like six or seven of us I was only like single person in the theater it was like me to yeah I was all like I think was like three couples to kind of there of course one of my biggest kind of peppy well I shouldn't say peppy is because it really not their fault but the I guess they turn into a positive is you know when I bought my ticket there was only two other people so I being sure to get a row like couple up behind them and sit in the middle or whatever and be away from everybody and then someone that was ahead of me at the food line bought tickets directly behind me oh my God like literally go dionidage yeah and it's like the theater so I'm like I like if there's not that many seats sold I almost feel bad because I'm like I don't want to like sit right in front of these people

what a five annoying or something so of course you know there's no one there so you shouldn't be thinking that because they're the ones who said let's sit behind this fucking one other person in the theater yeah so which is psychopathic behavior by the way and I I'm not going to lie I would have been fucking farting and like do and everything I could take out my phone and make sure I got a bad because as I reflected I think they were buying their tickets almost at the exact same time as I was buying my ticket so it could have been like my seat wasn't taken at that time and then we just have to psychopaths so you know I did have to say a couple over just because I was like that way I'm out of their way I can you know stretch out I'm not being annoying or anything and all that kind of stuff so the real question would you recommend this would you recommend people go see it in theaters before it comes out that's a good question okay so I'll say this like spoiler alert it was not my favorite movie obviously this is not like a series that I follow or anything but I was sitting there and I thought like when the credits rolled I went I think that if you like this

series you're really going to like this movie because like I feel like it has the vibe and it had like a lot of lore and it was it did a decent job of setting up like like it could just end there but if they want to continue this particular thread they could you know what I mean and I will say I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you are not a big fan of the series like I went obviously not having seen like the last four I would recommend that necessarily but if you like these movies I would totally go see it I think you're going to enjoy this one and like I'm not saying like this is not shade I'm not saying like these movies are stupid or anything I love like popcorn movies and like series and stuff like that like you know I just for whatever reason this series is like like to me it's fine if somebody said come over we're going to watch one of these movies I'd be like sure yeah why not but I'm not like like I just have so many movies I want to watch that they're going to be really low on my priority list you know because they just don't like grab me yeah that's it so yeah I would recommend it if you are into these movies or you like you know big popcorn I love this I love this for you I'm it see I'm going to get it

be the this is tough I don't think I'm going to recommend the sea in the theater I also like you like this isn't necessarily my thing but this isn't I don't know this just isn't one I feel like I'd be clamoring the tell people to go see like to me I'm like I you know this is probably going to be an on you know this is going to be on streaming in like three weeks probably yeah and I feel like you can probably wait you're probably not missing a whole lot I don't think yeah if you've got like a nice big TV at home it should be fine yeah but one again because this there was not like a lot of sound that you need like a big surround sound and stuff yeah yeah so I love that for I love that for us I recommend and I not recommend and that's the best way to be it's beer I that's not that's barely a recommend man like this is a like if you really like this do it but other than that just don't bother so with that why don't we cut on over to the spoiler section so we're now in the spoiler

section for insidious out of the further if you haven't seen the movie and you don't want it spoiled pause it now go check it out then come back or keep on listening if you simply don't care all right so now we can stop you know holding their punches yeah pussy foot around talking about stuff so you know I think let's talk about the dentist first you know let's really get it out of the way please because I don't ever want to think about it yeah so you were very concerned about the the dentist horse going on did this live up to if someone is scared of the dentist is this going to continue your terrifying thoughts about the dentist I mean it's not like marathon man or something but I literally the second that he sat down in that chair I literally put my face in my popcorn thing and was just like like I spend about 10 minutes not looking at the screen so I don't know I truly don't know you said you said don't watch it and I told

you I'm not going to and then I would take up my phone to go shit I mean movie theater I can't look my phone and distract myself so I was literally just twisting my napkin around in my lap so this is hard I don't have any dentist trauma so you know I'm like I think my inches crazy or something but I get it I get a lot more also I just I yeah I this is a trigger for me and I just said fuck it I'm not looking at screen so I have no idea so I mean you know I think this is probably going to be one of the iconic scenes at you know for this movie obviously you know Gemma is like a dental high is a dental hygienist is that what they're all they're not full of dentists or whatever and then you know we get like lesser the creepy old guy that's moved in the neighborhood he shows up these old people I thought pretty good at being like creepy just smiling at them all the time walking back for through the neighborhood I was kind of intrigued and I will say in a little bit I will talk more about it but I did like what they did with these guys because I assumed one thing and then that wasn't correct and I was like oh that's actually I like that that is this wasn't just the obvious thing yeah but obviously the trauma of her slowly prodding through this guy's mouth with tools you know she she see something in the X-rays of his mouth that's moving does she I don't know I never

wasn't looking at this great so you know she continues to take the X-ray pictures there's something in her his mouth like moving like it looks like a being moving and she doesn't understand what's going on and she creeped out by this guy because she's already she knows that he's creepy in the neighborhood and she at this point she already knows like there's something up with these guys going on yeah so she puts the I don't know what you call them bite blockers or something and then she's going to be moving into his into one side of his jaw so we can't clamp his jaw down so at this point I'm kind of thinking OK so you know he's going to like super creeper strength so like he's going to bite down break this and bite her hand or finger something but that's not what they do the the jump scare of this is that produced out of his mouth as we slowly you know they're trying to really slow play it you know looking in his mouth there's nothing there or is there we don't know

but to be I've started laughing basically a second mouth of like alien jaw looking thing comes out and bites her like tries the bite her finger she pulls her finger out so it doesn't actually get her she hits her head we go in his mouth and then he's going to the further and as you eloquently say it before we get ghost and just and stuff yeah that's when I look back up on the screen and then when he's like and I'm looking away again now yeah and I mean this is kind this is kind of the thing where like most of these movies because I think just where we have the intention of of all these other sequels I go into this being like no one's going to die like really they never kill anybody in these movies other than like you know when you know when Lin she died in one of the sequels that was like the big stainer and she might be the biggest death they've ever had in any of these movies but none of the main characters always get through it and fight you know fight the ghosts and do all that and I get it like it's

you know it's like a PG horror movie that's very low stakes yeah so this was like kind of the issue is even as we're building like these dentist scenes and stuff I'm like all right well I know I know you're not probably not killing the Gemma like Gemma is our lead character you're not going to kill her like 40 minutes into the movie it's just not going to happen maybe they should have well I mean but so this this is going to I have so many thoughts and like I said it's it's really going to all kind of jump together so let's just talk about eggs I talked about this bringing her into the further I think I think we're using the further too much I think that's the only move they got or something I actually found it to be very monotonous and annoying because let me compare it a little bit to something else which maybe is not fair but I don't care I was thinking the whole time about how like if you were watching a nightmare and Elm Street movie yeah every time you slip into like this kind of like other world dream state whatever you want to call it it will be something totally different and it was just this like black place with some green lighting like I was just like there's nothing visually appealing about this and I guess that's why they got away with like zero budget because it's just like oh we got a room let's throw a couple of lights over here and fuck me.

Yeah, I was just it just didn't do what I was like this is supposed to be a horror movie man like and it's not zero budget movie like this is not so yeah shitty you know independent like I'm not not in a bad way shitty independent complimentary you know tiny as horror movie like you know it's got it's got like a machine behind it like I feel like they could have I mean this is a money maker this is a genius one money maker yeah I agree and I get it like the further and the rest of the movies are very bearing it's very you know like dark and I did remember that one I was watching it for the first one I was like yeah which is great like which is great if we're only there briefly a couple times or something yeah at least a third of this movie if not half of it was in there yeah like most of this movie is set in the further yeah so it's like we need something a little more visually compelling and dark rooms or just the house lit by like a black light essentially like a blue light and can we just to have a moment here to say that it also would have been more effective

if that was drastically different from the real world yes but there was no fucking overhead lights anywhere in the real world that house was lit by like a couple of fucking lamps and a flashlight and that's it and I would argue that it was that house might be more scary than the further then the further like it's you know it's kind of like has some decrepiveness in some spots and all this kind of thing that bathroom I'm like okay but yes I mean the main spoiler can see to this you know the synopsis brings up a bit but we're this whole family we are to learn have a superpower and their superpower is they can bring things back into the real world from the further I very nightmare on Elm Street idea this is like very and that's why I was like thinking the whole time like night when Elm Street did this better yeah like we literally did this with what we did this in dream warriors and like dream master the first one yeah yeah like remember in the first one that's right that she brings about yeah

yeah I'm not sure if I could say is this on how it's pretty much deal with in all the nightmare on Elm Street drag him into the real world at least three of them at least like and I get it like it's not like I hated the idea that we have this kind of evil this evil head demon of Cyrus and you know like the demons we know the demons want to possess people they want to come yeah and that's what that's what every horror movie that has demons or like spirits or anything and they're always trying to get over there they're always trying to cross over yeah right like poltergeist all of that I mean I like get that I'm not like dragging it for that conceit necessarily I just think that the specifics of it were very yeah similar to other movies and as I said before I mean I had a hard time because I'm like Cyrus as in demon form just really looking like blue long legs he's kind of got this like leader of a aging like metal core band I was like is this like

fucking dollar-amma Marilyn Manson or something yeah like it kind of giving off those vibes I know I really think you see is as cool nails yes and I am a sucker for like a cult thing which is where we get the old people coming in which I didn't think was a cool idea because when I first saw them and the little promotional stuff that I had seen about the movie I'm like oh this is interesting because they smile like people from the further yeah so I'm like oh the furthest broken out they're in the real world and close these guys are like followers of this cult and they keep them I'm not really sure on the sedation stuff because it seems are always sedated but they're not always hooked up to the sedation listen and I have to say I agree with you on this yeah I actually think that they could have really improved this movie by focusing more on like I love a movie about a cult especially if it's like a series movie like cult of Chuck E and all that shit like I think that's a really like fertile idea but they did not

focus on that they they just spent you know fully half of the movie with her just slipping in and out of the further and blah blah and before the cult thing even came into it really you know what I mean like as a plot point and I was like if they had somehow gotten that out of the way right the very beginning and like focused a bit more on the cult and its history and origins and shit like that I think that would have made for a much more intriguing movie maybe that's just me no I agree I think they should have leaned into it more because they told yeah pretty much as much as they needed to tell because it doesn't really matter because this to me was like our beginning of the smarvel location where yeah he's kind of Cyrus is like a demon but we're kind we kind of get it like he's not like the demon he's just like one of many demons that are living in here no way is he like you know when I think about the guy from the first in city is you know the red face red and black pain and he's like you know he's got the hooves and the and the all that stuff going on and like he's

essentially like this powerful big bad like Cyrus is in that and I was just like it was just more of this movie where I'm like okay like this is really prodding at we want sequels we want to build this out yeah because we now have essentially as I said these this family essentially has super powers yeah these guys are basically superheroes in this world now where by the end of it Gemma can literally transport an entire family home into the furthers and a dozen ghost demon things at least yeah like this is unprecedented and you know anything especially the series because to me the series simply you know the most powerful kind of human thing is like you know Lin Cheb being able to talk to the dead and then when she is dead you know relay her messages and all this kind of stuff and yeah I just kind of I

felt I was like oh this is kind of weird that like now we've got these kind this kind of like overpowered human in this world that you basically and I mean I'm sure they're prepping right like Lin Cheb's not young so I'm sure they're prepping like while we don't we don't need somebody else Lin Che anymore because this this woman is learning to use her power and can go into the daughter so yeah they can do a time jump if they want and the daughter can be an adult like yeah a bill you know maybe this they can go back and do a prequel that is the mothers the mother's mother so like the grandmother's like a story because I need to say I don't understand there was no explanation of why they have this ability or if it's something their whole family or if it just started with the mother she seemed totally clueless they had those weird fucking rings and shit for what they brought these things I was like that's gonna explain their power that's

gonna be like what they use to like magnify to make them more powerful to take the demons down and it was just like no we have these weird rings with like stuff scratched into them and they're so much and again Cyrus I was in the Cyrus lambs initials sure I guess but like I just don't didn't understand the point of it maybe I maybe it was because I was up since four o'clock in the morning and I was well no I to me I was also curious like is this something like before jama's mother like could other yeah people do and if that's the case is it like a talisman is that why they have these powers because I was like um you know we're we're showing these video tapes of him and you know a live building this call trying to get to like you know the the further essentially so I'm like well the people that are the trio are in the videos and they're visibly like much much younger so you know this goes back like decades yeah better they just get aged from their you know say well exactly and that's kind of you know where I was like okay I am a little

interested these ideas but yeah it's not really overly explained now like I said a big thing I had with this also is you know apparently gone are the days of insidious and conjuring like kind of doing the job like I don't think there's a maybe that jaw thing but there really isn't a lot of jump scaring in this or at least not effective jump scaring because this movie tried like I feel like it's trying to pay homage to the first insidious and the other insidious is but it's like it was one of those things where I'm like oh okay I've got somebody's head in full middle of the frame yeah I know this camera is gonna move and there's gonna be someone behind the murder beside them and it was kind of disappointing that they never tried to play with that at all or change it at all I thought about like kind of the great jump scare I really enjoyed in in the red door was like when Patrick Wilson's getting the MRI and like he hears something but you're like

he's in this confined space of the MRI but then when he looks into the MRI as he's laying down there's like a creepy woman demon at the bottom like the enclosed park climbing up his leg which interesting they also kind of try to rip off in this I see a lot of people calling it the back room sofa you know a factory yeah yeah yeah I very much got back rooms from I yes yes so I mean I guess that's the next place to go that's the other big I think kind of set piece memorable piece in this is essentially we're set up that to learn the knowledge that Maya enjoys building like pillow forts and she has a huge a bigger pillow for it in the living room that she kind of plays in retreats to and yeah Gemma goes in and it turns into a back rooms of so far essentially it's just endless hallways of so far is obviously you know the age I am you know all

these kids talking back rooms when I see someone crawling through space like that I just think about bishop in the pipes and aliens just it was giving alien yeah crawling now I will say I thought this was the most effective scene in the movie I thought this was good I thought anything I don't know what it is but anything when you're like I fairways away and there's like a light and there's like a creepy face or something like looking around a corner that just gets me I like every time I'm not like jumping out of my seat but I'm like unsettled you know fairly creepy yeah because to me it kind of gives you I think it's that feeling like when you watch a good scary movie and I think about when I'm like laying in bed at night and then you have those times where like you might be like looking out into the hallway or something and then it's kind of like you're like do I see something like something to focus on yeah and you know I thought this is pretty good and then I like how it kind of you know it's just always there a did you she takes light on and off of it

it's not really like it just creepy there every time now you know it does the traditional like I've got a look all around and I know at one of these points it's gonna turn the camera and something's gonna be right there in her face but overall I didn't hate this I thought this was at least like an inspired idea and one thing that I do like which for us would be you know where a love of nightmare on Elm Street is kind of introducing more dream like logic into this where yeah it's not just I'm going to the further but she's also sleeping so you know she can you know have this kind of stuff and I even I even enjoyed where she's trying to figure out how to get out and she's got to like go into the cushion and it's really yeah and I love that because I you know confine space is not my thing and I'm like oh yeah same yeah I'm like that it was absolutely it was a nice

it was like a nicely shot scene for sure yeah but kind of my issue is like to me those are like the two main scenes the dentist in that and then the rest is just kind of like slop it's just kind of pushing this story along so you guys know that these guys have powers and and you know they can do this stuff like you said there's tons of demons we're pretty much introduced to like whole swass of demons and it's a complicated relationship because I do like like I don't hate the idea of like when they get Maya and Cyrus is you know using her to bring the demons over and I'm like okay yeah like whatever that's that's cool but it's even like when he's showing Gemma and showing Lin Shay like this is what my plan is it's like the apocalypse the demons are gonna come over they're showing snapshots of it and I'm like I don't know this seems pretty low scale

for like a demon apocalypse like we couldn't pay him like some more extras or something to really create chaos and stuff I don't know it's just they didn't seem like this whole world ending plan to me it was just way too much like a roving gang yeah of youths delinquents and you know I I think some of the demons work visually like oh I love the girl with the dress and the shock and the shock and then she's I can't remember she's from like two or three like okay there was kind of a main demon family that like she killed them or something but I always think she's there's something about the 50s I don't know what it is I think that's kind of yeah I think that's why the strangers masks always work for me there's just something creepy about like well it's like a different just that is yeah like 50s or pin up or anything like that like there's there's just like something like what stringy long greasy hair hanging in this face so you don't

so they don't have to put you know makeup on them with the blindfold on the blindfold really got blindfold yes oh my god a piece of fabric instead of paying a makeup artist there we go yeah which you know on the on the fact of sires I will say is this the second movie this year that I I just kept thinking about stranger things because I was like why what is her fascination now first it was evil dead burns we're not only are we getting the vectna looking at ending guy but he also sounds like that but I was like they kind of make this guy's voice sound exactly like vectna from stranger things like apparently we're just using the same effect on every end bag guys voice to get like I don't know let's switch it up what if you had a real high-pitched voice or something I don't know or not have it be a dude oh there you go or have it be a leprechaun and boom well I'm not gonna lie leprechaun in the as what's it to be on whatever's called the further would be kind of slight I mean let's be realistic the you know probably a lot of inspiration

for insidious from the beyond in general yeah no for sure I never really put that together till you just said it by a hundred percent sure now I will I'm like triggering these associations in your head yeah you'll never on see it I will say to go with that theme my favorite shot of the movie that I was like cold be proud the little scina file in me just tingling is the nod to Italian horror where the demons are pulling and tugging her when tugs are towards the corner and there's like a shard of glass or something yeah and we get it no it's a it's a cleaver and my cleaver yeah and we get yeah he flicked yeah I love that was the one shot I was like oh my god the whole movie I was like I love this this shot is beautiful yeah he flicked the meat cleaver into the wall and for no reason because why would he have a meat cleaver no one else is like looks it for the gun lady is like using weapons and stuff but they were like oh we need this one cool shot quick let's do a luteo full chi zombie yeah whole so I did love that and that like you know it's the little things

like that like giving glimmers a hope where I'm like oh shit Jacob Chase probably that was the only that was the like a that's a little spark in the dark yeah not even a match and like even it seemed like even the the way they shot it like the the film quality just look different in that shot it looked really really good and then I'm like oh we knew this was like this is our this is for our moment where we're cooking with fire yeah then when you just go back you know 30 milliseconds later to like the blue further and it's just like okay I've got all these old ghost demons you know going on and that's what's so funny about the spoiler for resection it's like I feel like there's not a lot to spoil because you have those two main things the coach the dentist we have demons trying to get in and out and we told you the ending already she trained she tricks them and transports an entire house of demons back into the further without them knowing they're in the further which I'd have to really sit here and you know I'll think about it soon for down

recording which I'm like I feel like this is a plot to some famous movie of like trekking beans and the thinking they're in something else like some sort of fantasy movie or I'm sure it's like probably a marble movie or something I was gonna say it's like X-Men yeah you have your telepath yeah exactly I know I'm trying to think there's always a telepath being like no actually you're still you're just like you're actually you're talking to a wall or something yeah but as you said ending sadly in this no stakes of like no one dying you even our Himo boyfriend cop boyfriends survives well one person died the fucking neighbor who was wonderful and watched her child yeah I guess that's true she did get her slow but you know she's a well in the nice old couple the neighbors all died oh that's true yeah but if you don't see them die we just see their yeah if these guys buy property in your neighborhood just move unless you want

to die because everyone else is it's just you know terrible it's gonna be coming fasted also I didn't really buy the whole like I'm living in this house because I had so much trauma in it but so I want to make it a good place I'm like it just that was that was yeah I was like I don't buy this this is not a real person thing yeah most people would be like I'm selling this house the market is high I will go somewhere else we will be fine I just like can't I can't deal with it so let's talk about the Rowan can't believe what happened so Mike informed me before we started or while we started that there's an after credit scene I thought this isn't Sidious I thought only my rival movies did this what what am I thinking new and it doesn't matter if you're seeing freaking Steven Spielberg or or Jacob Chase or Scorsese like you have to look at your phone and say is there a post credit scene now you know true to hold I went and saw Spider-Man after this and

it started immediately after this so I had to go I I couldn't hang around yeah so I want it wasn't worth hanging around for to be honest so I want you to tell me about it so I can be amazed while I'm here amazed yeah well I mean it really was like about 45 seconds it's you know after like the first kind of main credits and then before the like full credit start to roll and it just cuts to the further dentist yes and guess who's strapped in his chair oh oh like Cyrus yeah okay I mean or how he stopped the dentist from yeah drilling what's her face yeah so he is strapped in the chair and he starts getting drilled so yeah by the way that was actually um really really cool part for me having a fucking trigger with dentist shit and then this drill shit happening I was like cool Rowan didn't tell me about this I literally was so mad at you and little did you

know I had never seen it you literally skipped out on it and so I'm will get revenge on you you will not see it coming you don't I could be tomorrow it could be 10 years from now but I will be getting you back for that well hopefully listeners and in their their love for you staying and finding out that information toughing it out that sacrifices you make for the podcast are they can't be measured in any sort of unit I'm just like swimming through a sea of lies that's uh you have any other spoiler thoughts to this movie all the honest there's not a lot to spoil the plots pretty basic there's not a lot of like iconic set pieces or anything no and it's just kind of you know we're starting in cities again to me it's like you're gonna that's that's what that's what this boy it's kind of really it's kind of like a soft but it's not like a full reboot it's like a soft reboot where they like have a great characters and stuff yeah requel there we go

sorry whatever so we we've come to the time of in city is being a recoil now so I did well I mean listen if you're six movies in this is it's about time for it to happen the appropriate time the other thing I can really think of is I did think it was kind of cool in Jay uh using Claire who's a clay yeah I was gonna say I loved that character I mean it was like kind of a I don't understand it was literally just like a random excuse to have this like cool chick yeah they need to really like her yeah I was like she's she's she's cool so you know I'm into it it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me and then there like explanation for it was very kind of like one second and move on well my like that they're like well she can't just go around bringing someone around the tattoos so she's got to explain that grapefruit skin is the closest you'll get to human skin and like we're gonna have like the whole last set piece yeah around tattooed grapefruits and like playing risk with they're sending off a demon risk with their setting up the

plane and she's like got it all laid out it was giving me like the newer scream movies oh a thousand percent yeah like I'm gonna explain the plan I'm using cut up grapefruit and stuff with everyone's picture on it it was cute I like yeah it was it was cute but my other spoiler thought was so and obviously they cribbed a lot from nightman alms street like yeah there's no you can't you know I'm not trying to like do it a disservice by comparing it to something else but they were reheating nightman alms streets nachos like let's be real but you know who else is nachos they reheated and we've kind of brought it off please do tangentially a few times fucking x-men so think of did you read astonishing x-men yes I did okay so the whole ass fucking climactic scene is giant size x astonishing x-men number one yeah when spoiler alert kitty pride phases a giant like planet size bullet so that won't so it goes through the earth that was literally

she was like bringing the house into the further I was like this is literally kitty pride phasing the bullet except it's in a horror movie yeah like what the fuck Gemma is kitty pride so she's kitty pride I was like oh my god this is wild they just like they're just they do not do a fuck and I kind of was like okay this is Balzi I almost respect it well and that's kind of the thing you know it's like kind of go respect the swing so yeah yeah all right well without let's get into rating this if you're new to the podcast our rating system is nay okay yay or sleigh Mike what would you rate in city is out of the further um it's an okay I considering the fact that I haven't seen the last at least four movies you know I could keep up with it all right and it kind of like did a decent job of if you maybe like forgot or this is your first one kind of like giving you enough morsels so that you can follow the plot not that it's like got this great convoluted plot I just think it dragged a lot because they just spent too much time in this dark room

and the house was really drab and like dark but not in a like moody kind of like cool stylish way it was just sort of like really poorly lit and there was no overhead lighting and I was just like what's going on here yeah there's just too much for me you know I was like I I don't know I didn't like we were talking about earlier it just the the further is not visually compelling enough to really keep my attention and invest me in the world you know what I mean and I just so I was like it's fine like I don't regret the hour and 40 minutes or whatever but I'm don't particularly ever want to see it again so it's like okay let's fine it had one or two moments where I was like oh that's cool and then that was it what about you yeah it's kind of weird all I did was bitch about this movie but I think I'm also gonna come in with an okay like it's not super offensively bad I do like I said multiple times I don't like kind of the marvel focation going on where it's like this is setting up sequels and we're setting up this like kind of recoil where we we can kind of soft

reboot it with new people and they kind of have super powers essentially and I don't know if I love where that's going I also agree with you like I don't hate the idea of the further but I like in the other one like I like to go in and out of the further quickly yeah I don't the further isn't visually interesting enough to spend a lot of time in there and you know if you're gonna do that you you need to go more nightmare on Elm Street and needs to be more visually pleasing to I am more stuff going on than it just being blue essentially yeah um you know I thought some the the demon designs the creature designs were all right you know they had the guy in the dentist office that had like I don't know some sort of methane in that you would use for I have no idea but you know he's drooling everywhere and yeah I guess all people are creepy in general anyway when they look like these old people I like you I absolutely love the look of the like 50s woman with the guy and like yeah and the creepy smoke smiling is creed this is why the movie smile

always works for you creepy smiles just work for me I'm like oh yeah that's creepy but I like I said I don't like that they kind of got away from like these like you know I was going the bitch during the red door episode like these stupid fucking jump scares I kind of just want the jump scares back there's no jump scares yeah you realize you don't know what you got tell it's gone yeah I was like can we bring some of those back because to me this was just kind of it just ease what it is I was kind of like no punch there was no punch there's never a punch to this and yeah yeah this clock's in it an hour and 46 minutes this should have been an hour and 20 minutes like they're like oh I was gonna say 83 minutes would have been like a sweet spot for this there was a lot of times in this where I'm like how long have I been watching this movie like how long what when I looked before I came in how long did it say this movie was and yeah just I didn't I didn't love the runtime but like I said I don't think there's anything like so offensive I've

got to give it a name it's like a pretty weak okay I don't know if I'm running to the hills to tell anyone the watch this I mean let's be honest I don't know if I'm right in the hills telling when the watch any of the insidious movies but you're not you're not I won't leak that until we someday when we actually discussed insidious but uh yeah so I'll give it an okay to two okay is for insidious out of the further and if you aren't doing so already you can follow us on social media at its latest podcast we're pretty much everywhere there's social media blue sky Facebook letterbox Instagram Tumblr YouTube TikTok everybody should get back on Tumblr by the way it's like so slow we get people adding us on Tumblr all the time re-sharing time is awesome I I'm like I just I'm so into Tumblr again right now so yeah I mean you know follow us wherever we are at
