Is the 'Miami Vice: Director’s Final Cut' the 'MIAMI NICE' Cut?

Beyond Fest announced the world premiere of Miami Vice, directors, Final Cut. We just can't stop. We got the announcement from beyond Fest over an open wire. That is the hand we have been dealt. World premiere three weeks out, a 4K restoration of a new version of Miami Vice. That's my partner, Katie Walsh. I'm Blake Howard. Welcome back to a very special Miami Nice. We're both wearing sunglasses. We both have got the guns out. Oh, shit.

1:01I'm so happy to see you. Oh, it's great to see you. This is, I don't know if what happened with your phone, but Michael, man, the forever tinkerer that he is has now bringing out a new version of Miami Vice. I had a podcast yesterday after the news where the first 20 minutes before you recorded a second was talking about theories of what it could be. I woke up to thousands of messages, our discord. People saying, what is it? Is it the Miami Nice Cut? Can we just say, I think it's the Miami Nice Cut. I'm like, what else? What else is it going to be? Katie, do we, we perfected it? When we were last together and he said, I prefer this one and we both said to him. I think the 500 people in this room disagree. I think that maybe he took that to heart. I think maybe we got him. Remember when we said that theatrical cut opening? We're like brother. Brother, we're in your head. I know, you know, our intrepid crew member, Chris, Keevy, was in another discord server talking to someone else.

2:11And he was like, I think it's going to be boat race. And they both were like, yeah, he regrets not doing the boat race. But I would be shocked if it's boat race. I'll be honest. If it is, all I can say is, this is the, you know, when we were, when Miami Nice was a constant part of our lives, we ran a couple of Miami Nice Cut screenings, which were emblast on mine, so that people around the world could watch it. And I would just say, like, if it's not the Nice Cut, the Nice Cut exists. The best version of the movie exists. Listen, the lore of the Nice Cut still exists online. People are talking about it on Reddit, Discord, on the dark web. The Nice Cut exists. The Nice Cut exists. I've got a couple of friends who are big curators of fan cuts or any edits of movies. And my friend was like, please, is this the Nice Cut?

3:12You guys perfect. I'm like, I don't know. And people like, did Michael Man call you and tell you? No, he doesn't. No one told us anything. Hi, I'm a dear friend of the AC every time they, they introduced me. They're like, this is our closest dearest friend. And I had no idea who wanted to tell me about this, not a single damn soul. Not a soul. We just hear it over the wire. Mara Bugsbaum. Mara Bugsbaum. Why did I get a little texty from her? I got no texty, wexties from anyone. But also, I'm like, aren't you working on pre-pro? Aren't you on heat to pre-pro? I think they had a pause on heat to pre-pro. I think two things happened. The man hunt, the aura of the screening of manhunter that you went to. That kind of religious experience. Oh, the, the, no, but no, no, that was, that was not what just came out. No, no, not, I just mean that screening was like, oh, I think we need to give manhunter its due.

4:16So then he went off and studio canal seemed to be one of the key physical media companies that like actually get his drift, like how they want, how he wants to work full control of the whole release. So he goes off and does that with those folks. That seems to work out really well. And then they did have a pause in heat to pre-pro because they were waiting for one Leonardo Capriota finish, Scorsese movie. So essentially timing of the weather, waiting for Leo. There's a few months there and you know how this guy works like 20 hours a day. He gets all fiddly and fussy. And so he's like, all right, I'm going to go do this. So then I just wonder. You wonder if the, the, the Egyptian screening, he was like, I'm going to, I'm going to go back to this. I'm going to go back to this. I'm going to go back to this. He's still his favorite version. He's still his favorite version is that, that alternate version, that revision. If this movie doesn't start with them on call. This is the thing is like, I was like, I was like, I have to be in this.

5:17I need to take a notebook. I need to be doing research. This is journalism time for me. I need to be figuring out what are the ins and outs, the changes. I, because I need to know send me a list. Send me the nice cut list. I will check it off. Yes, well, the big, this is what we can say to all of the people that are out there. But you don't really know it until you see it. Is that the opening minutes of the movie, the whole number on call in the nice cut is perfectly executed. It then sort of does a seamless handover to, to the director's cut. What are the revision cut, which is adding extra scenes, layers on layers of scenes that come into the movie. The truity scenes, the consult, uh, uh, salutations from your friends in the south. Like it brings it all together. We then revert back prior to the changes of the ending with Malguay's in the air tonight.

6:17We, we, we come back, we deviate back to the, the direct, um, to the original cut of the movie. Right, right. And that version plays so hard. I mean, we've screened it like three times and every time at the beginning, everyone is hailing with laughter. And every time at the end, everyone is telling each other how much they love each other. Like I just don't, like every time we're together, we've done that screening. We're like, man, that is the funnest thing ever. So I hope that he does that because if there are some scenes, we know the scenes were seen the scenes that he's going to put back or take out or whatever. But it's like, yeah. I don't know. I don't know. I'd, it's an interesting time. I know. I know. And then I like flopped on getting the Beyond Fest tickets because I forgot to be on my phone. Thank you to out. Thank you to out to Scotserva because Gilles was the only one who saved you. I know. Gilles saved me. Well, you know who saved me as John Carpenter because Gilles has tickets to the escape movies at the Academy Museum that night.

7:17And so he can't use his ticket. But I did have several men text to me and be like, you can have mine. Oh. That's nice. That's nice. I know. It was really sweet. And then, um, but also I was like sending Hail Mary texts like Chris said American cinema tech being like, I need to be there for journalistic purposes. And I hate asking for free stuff. But they're always like, ask us for a ticket. We'll hook you up. So I'm like, this is my one time I can like. The one time. The one time that A, if you weren't moderating it, you need to be in the room. And I just said like some someone was like. A lot of people have asked if we are moderating. And I'm like, I haven't heard anything about this. And I honestly don't think they will ask us to moderate, which is fine. You know, sometimes you want a different voice and a different, um, you know, person to do it. But, uh, and sometimes the filmmakers want to talk to someone else too. So, you know, no, no skin off my back. I'm just happy to be there doing my journalistic duty.

8:17Yeah, unless I get a, a round trip to L.I. Take it in the mail. I won't be there just for context. I know. Like I, I just, it just got me thinking I was like, oh. I would fly over and I would just go like I would just go like and I would tell your our friends, your mainly friends. But friends after doing a moderation there and I'm going so well, I'd be like, I don't need to sit. I will stand at the back. I'm just going to stand here. I want to be in the room. Well, it's also going to be at the director's village, which is, um, the new theater that they've taken over that's going to be eventually renovated. But they've been playing. It's an old movie palace in Westwood. All right. It seats like a thousand people. Oh my God. Oh my God. Um, that's why I was like, how the hell did this sell out? Because it's so many seats. It might be 800. It's between 800 and a thousand. Um, I was there for the, they did a jackass marathon. Oh yeah.

9:18And that many people watching jackass for like eight hours is God knows what was happening. Hey, Bruno would have been loopy. I'm pretty sure every like 60% of the audience was on shrooms. Um, but you know, whatever. I couldn't trust my, I couldn't trust my stomach with that kind of mind-altering thing in a jackass movie. Because sometimes you do have to catch yourself like, oh my God. Like, oh, totally. Yeah. You got to hold some vom back and this is pretty freaky. This is some, this is pretty freaky fish eye lenses and penises in those movies as well. Yeah. Freaky out on mushrooms. I would imagine for sure. Um, but, uh, yes, it's like going to be a huge theater. It's like old, you know, they just played the Odyssey there for like two months on 70. So it's definitely cool to, you know, celebrate. I mean, listen, they're celebrating the movie like this. There's a new cut like, sorry, Blake, but that's us. I, I didn't want to say it. But if you say it, we're a part of it.

10:19We're at least a part of it. This is not just us, but we're a part of it. We're an engine. Katie, one of the biggest things that has ever gone viral ever was a picture made in the middle of COVID of your and my family. That's the biggest thing that has ever gone viral. I'm not saying anything. Oh, oh, oh, oh. There was a, simply a hint that we would take this movie on and take it seriously. And we started silly. And then we went, we, we got lost like it took us. We thought it could be something and it became something else. And undeniably every person that was spoken to. Even up to the great guys over at like podcasts like it's the feel and Emily the other day. Well, we were talking about like Miami vise. It just came up in a conversation on a part I was recording with them. And I said firstly, you have to get Katie on. Secondly, yeah, it, it, there is an engine of Miami.

11:19Nice that it's a, it's definitely a part of the journey that the movie has gone on to be re recognized. And our friend Travis Woods wrote an amazing. Right. I say about it for Brightwall dark room, which came out last week, which is for the 20th anniversary. So everyone read that. It's so good. I, it's one of those things where I, this is what I do whenever I read Travis, I like, I like sent him like a, like a line from his review. And then I just say, fuck off. Fuck, fuck you. Like literally, fuck you. I hate you. Fuck off. Yeah. That's how I, that's how I express love. Love. It's like, oh, that was really, that was really good. Or if I think your writing is really good, I will tell you to fuck off. Yeah. And that is my love language. But the only indication that I had that something was a brewing was that he posted that on Instagram. I hope he doesn't mind that I'm airing him out like this.

12:20Yeah, airman. And then he was like, what's going on? So I knew that Beyond Fest was, was brewing a little brew. Yeah. Mixing up a little mojito, if you will. Yeah. And muddling some lime. Uh, but I did not. The old fest getting their tan in Miami. For sure. I knew Beyond Fest was getting their tan in Miami. And I was, but we were both like, what could this be? Because like, it's the 20th anniversary. So maybe they'll screen it. And then he's like, maybe they'll get Colin and Jamie. And I'm like, I don't think Colin wants to talk about this movie, like ever again. And he does not seem to be in the movie. Jamie's the last one that would be fun. Because he hasn't really talked about it. Right. And I also think, but I think he would be hard to get to. Yeah, he's massive. He's got his own shows and this and that. Right. And different films. And I think it's like, then he's, then it's just like getting talent. He's already kind of in the way it's doing whatever one of his many projects.

13:22We were just like, what is it going to be? Because like you and I had such a great screening at the Egyptian. Yeah. For a friend of the fast and like, would it feel too much like a repeat? And so I was just like, what could it be? Look at me. And the fact that it's a new cut is bananas. When I, when I saw it. And how many people were like, it's the nice cut. Did he call you? I'm like, no, never was. Yeah, we were in the edit bay with his army of editors. Do you think he would a like have a guy from Sydney remotely like patching in? If I was actually an LA or a random like, you would hear that I was in LA. Every one of our friends who would ask me would know that would just know. Yeah, yeah. They would just know like, like if, if I just miraculously, if you just saw. My Instagram and Katie Walsh was standing next to me. People would be like, something is a foot.

14:25You'd be in LA. I'd put in your gray suit. I've done that one. Now I've got to think of another one. I've got to think of another good one for the next time. But, but it's like, yeah, it's, it's an exciting time. I'm very glad to know that you and Travis will be there. I'm sure there are many of our other extended friends and, and, and, and, and family of everything that we can, yeah, I just like to put together a little pregame or something with whoever's going to be there. That'll be, or like a, or a post game, but, post, if, if any of our discord is there, you do not have to worry about taking beautiful notes. They, they, they, he should build a, it's not going to what's his real name. Bill Bruns. Bill Bruns? Yeah. Yeah, I don't, um, who is that on that thing? I always get the guys confused with their names because they're going to go for that. Anyway, he's going to be there, I think. Yeah. Well, he's flying in. See? That good. I know. That good. Well, I think it's going to be, it is going to be very interesting, whatever it is, and hopefully it's a blast of a night. I'm sure it will be. I am as right now, not flying to Los Angeles. I just want to say, I'm sorry to anyone who expected that I would be there. I would love nothing more than to do that. But it does take 13 hours to get to Katie. So nice to pick me up and let me stay with her. And then it takes 13 hours to get home and days get lost in that sauce. And the emotional roller coaster is real. So it's a lot. It's a lot. It's a lot. So we're going to skip that. But we will make a commitment here that Miami-Nice will briefly return

16:26to do a debrief on what the hell this thing even is. Yes, we will. We have to. It's our duty. It's our duty. At this point, it's our duty. 18:30manhunter that 4K came out. You guys saw it and then the final cut came out in theaters. It did not come to Australia. It does not come out. I've got to actually go to some of my contacts and be like, can we get this screened at like IMAX? Can you put on a screening? Could you do a 4K of that at a time? You need that. I need that. I need that. And I do know some contacts at Universal. So Universal technically distributed the movie. Maybe this 4K they can get access to it in some way. And I'll be like, if you guys could put a screening on, it will be packed. You got to do it. So yeah, I think something is a, but we'll be back. It's great, great to see you. It is the best.
