I've been covering the New York Islanders for two decades and I wrote the book Ice Wars

on the history of the Islanders rivalry with the Rangers from 1972 till the modern era.

So glad you could join us today for this special bonus episode to talk a little Islanders

hockey.

The focus today, Matthew Schaefer and why not?

Another accolade coming his way on Monday as the NHL announces that he is the first star

of the week around the league and that is something you absolutely love to see.

And Schaefer deserved it.

Four goals, five points, a plus five in three games and just an unbelievable performance

where he has lifted the team on his back.

And right now he moved past Dennis Potman for the most points by a rookie defenseman

in Islanders history and with the two goals he scored, I mean, now he has 20 goals on

the season and no 18 year old defenseman has ever scored that and in Islanders history.

And Islanders history only one other player has scored 20 goals or more in a season as

a defenseman and that of course is Dennis Potman who is in the hockey hall of fame.

Schaefer with 20 goals and 24 assists has 44 points in 61 games as a defenseman.

He is a plus 14.

He is second on the Islanders in goals.

He is second on the Islanders in points and he is tied for second in plus minus only

Matthew Barsall with a plus 15 is higher, Ryan Pollock and Simon Holmes from match Schaefer

with a plus 14 and ultimately the thing you got to love about this kid is how can

Tages his performance has been the fact that the Islanders are eight and oh in overtime

after being dead last you know last year that they were terrible in overtime speaks volumes

and the fact that this team is faster and more aggressive.

I mean I honestly believe that Matthew Barsall shooting more often being more aggressive

a lot of that ties into the fact that Matthew Schaefer is on this team is somebody who can

work with Barsall who can skate with Barsall who can anticipate the moves that a guy like

Matt Barsall is going to make and I think they bring out the best in each other and right

now Schaefer is on pace for 27 goals and 59 points so 27 goals 32 assists 59 points.

Keep in mind that last year last year 59 points would have led the Islanders in that category

because the leading scorer last year on this team was Bo Horvatt with 57 points for an 18-year-old

rookie that is nothing short of incredible and it also illustrates how far the Islanders

as a team have come since last year to this year now this team still has a ways to go to be

an elite cup contender but boy the team a year ago is nowhere near as good as the team this year

and the way Matthew Schaefer has played has been inspirational we've got more to get to on today

show we're going to talk about what Schaefer has meant to the team even more and his upside his

ultimate potential because wow we have not even reached we have not even reached his full potential

I really think this team Matthew Schaefer has benefited this team in so many ways

and it has been great to see last year every dayers will remember we had a mantra on this show we

need to be younger faster more skilled we laid it at it more physicality that's still a need

but the younger faster and more skilled part Matthew Schaefer checks all of those boxes and

the thing that I think Islander fans need to understand and appreciate and it's hard

is how special this kid is that he's doing this at the age of 18 that he just turned 18

in September was barely able to be in this year's draft that the Islander's had a three and a

half percent chance of winning the pick and still did and how nobody nobody anticipated that he

would be this good this fast there are people who said he had the potential to be this good

but this good this fast incredible and his maturity and the class that he has shown both

on and off the ice have been unbelievable the way he treats his teammates the way he treats the

fans the way he interacts with the media he is mature beyond his years and that is great now I do

think he is again you still have 21 games left on the Islander's schedule but I do believe he is

the runaway favorite as of now for the calder trophy for rookie of the year you have heard

or I have seen a lot of people on social media and in the youtube comments for the show saying yeah

maybe he's going to win the calder how about the norris how about the heart the norris

is for the best defenseman league the heart is the league MVP I think he'll get some norris trophy

votes but I don't think he'll be one of the finalists usually they have three finalists at the awards

you know presentation I mean look if he finishes really strong could he get to be a finalist yes

but I think he's a year or two away from a norris but right now I think he'll get votes and I think

there is multiple norris trophies and maybe a heart trophy or two in his future if he continues to

develop and you know I kind of likened this to how things were growing up in the 80s for me as

in as someone who rooted for and followed this team the islanders you know they won four straight

Stanley cups between 1980 and 1983 between 1975 and 1985 they were one of the best if not the best

team in the league almost every year in that 10 years fan and at the time at the time we as fans

especially younger fans did not fully appreciate what we were watching it was normal to us I put

that in air quotes for those of you listening and you have to understand yes or to have to have

the ability to take a step back and realize that it's not normal that having an 18-year-old

who hopefully can be an islander for 10 15 in 15 years he'll be 33 think about that that he'll

still be sort of at the end of his prime in 15 years again he has to stay healthy he has to

continue to do what he's doing but but the thought that he could be this dominant or even more

dominant for that long a time is absolutely incredible now the islanders do need to protect

him better that has to happen at some point you need you know everyone's talking about the trade

deadline one thing I'd add to any list I still think the islanders need somebody to have in this line

who can both play hockey and who the team can count on to protect Matthew Schafer in a playoff

series they're going to come after him harder and more often and they will make him their focal point

physically and defensively so they're going to need somebody to protect him when this team gets

to the playoffs but I think ultimately the beautiful thing that we're seeing is that he

he probably if there wasn't all star game he would be a strong candidate to be the islanders

representative team Canada certainly I think in hindsight has to regret not putting Schafer on

their Olympic team as an Islander fan I'm glad he didn't go not because I mean I know he wanted

to go and he's disappointed and I appreciate that and I wish he would have been able to live that

dream but strictly from an islanders standpoint having him take two and a half weeks off during

the Olympic break I think is partially a reason for the fast start that he's getting on off to now

that action has returned this kid can break all kinds of records but one step at a time now it's

up to the islanders now that you've got that pillar that foundation to build this team around

going forward it is up to Matthew Darsh and the islanders organization to fill out the roster with

players who can get Schafer to a championship to lift that Stanley Cup and it's not guaranteed

look at Conor McDavid he has not lifted a cup yet in his NHL career Alexander Ovechkin the leading

goal scorer in NHL history one championship so it's a challenge but hopefully Matthew Darsh is

up for it hopefully in the next two or three years as Schafer continues to mature physically

grows into his game he can be the next kill McCarr as a guy recognize or victor headman

not stylistically necessarily I think he's closer to McCarr than headman in his style of play

but he can be that player who everybody around the league says you know what if you're making

a list of the top three defenseman in the league he's on it every year that is where Matthew

Schafer can be he can be a top five certainly a top 10 player in the league for a long time to come

we just have to sit back as fans and appreciate how fortunate we are to have a player like this
