Israel's New Death Penalty Law for Palestinians

On March 31st, Israel's parliament just passed the bill making the death penalty by

hanging the default for Palestinians in the West Bank convicted of, nationalistic murders

against Israelis.

It got a 62-48 vote, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showing up in person to cast

his ballot.

This caps years of pressure from hard-right politicians to ramp up punishments.

The law hits military courts that handle West Bank cases where death is automatic unless

judges opt for life in prison.

For Israeli civilians, it's an option, but only for killings aimed at wiping out the

state, a definition that skips Jewish extremists.

Lawmakers cheered wildly after the vote, with national security minister Eta Marben-Govir

waving a bottle in victory.

Opposition figures slammed it as unjust and against international norms, while rights

groups called it discriminatory right out the gate.

Challenges are already piling up.

The civil rights advocates file petitions to Israel's top court minutes after passage.

It kicks in 30 days but faces stalls and it won't touch current prisoners like those

from the October 7th attacks.

Israel hasn't executed anyone since 1962.
