Inside the birds is back what's going on.
Everybody it's Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan.
And today, today is usually an exciting day for Eagles fans,
for NFL fans.
Most of the time today, the legal negotiating period
will begin for the NFL, the new league year officially
starts Wednesday, right?
But today is the day that the negotiations can start.
And the reason why I kind of sound reluctant at him
is because in days like this in the past,
I mean, it was just a couple of years ago,
we came back from the combine, remember you,
we're starting to hear that some of that stuff around
St. Juan Barclay was really real for the Eagles
and they wound up signing him.
It just, it seemed like in the, you know,
the Javon Hargrave we were ahead of that too.
There were so many big name guys.
And now you go into this one and it's,
there's just, you know, there are a couple
as we outlined on our free agency preview,
but I don't think this will be that exciting
as it comparably has been before.
As far as signings, no, we're expecting another,
we said last year and people yelled at us
we didn't know what we're talking about,
but we were right.
Unfortunately, we're, I think we underestimated
the low cash pen.
It was even lower than we expected.
Yeah.
That was kind of stunning to be,
you know, and how he talked about it at the combine.
He was talking about with the media this availability
about if you go heavy in one area,
you got to go low in another one, which means if you,
let's say they weren't, they didn't trade
for Max Crowley.
Let's say they would have done that.
Well, not only would the Office of Jayden Phillips
would have come back, but that might take it
from extending some contracts,
we're resigning some of their free agents.
And you know, you have to make tough decisions like this.
It's not easy.
Only his career is not very disciplined.
Remember the 2011, I know he had a personal control,
but he was a GM then, the 2011,
coming out of the lockout, the, the dream team year,
not the awesome one, and it was just a mess.
Right.
And he had a great line.
I believe it was this free agency.
He talked about the way to do it is,
you know, we, we drafted and developed
and that he, he might as well supplement.
I don't remember the line about free agency.
Or, or you get involved sporadically.
Yes.
And I thought that was a good line that that's he,
he's the kind of the king of free agency,
but he's been so much more disciplined.
Now, I will, though I will tell you,
the Barclay once surprised me because it,
it's kind of like he said the last couple of years,
they finally started changing the way they think.
Right.
Investing in linebackers.
Yep.
Not the traditional way.
They've, you know, they've, they've,
drafting one even also.
Even drafting one in the first round.
Right, right.
Well, I'm kind of pure linebacker, but okay.
Yeah.
Sorry, he has been.
Yeah.
But yeah, he, but, but that, but to that,
at least to what he is a linebacker.
Right.
And signing Barclay to big money like that was,
not the way they've ever done business.
Other than they did extend Westbrook's contract
for the last time and unfortunately, you know,
he, his knee was bad.
And he wants to, so we're just going to end his career,
but be West.
Deserved it because he'd been low, he'd been low paid.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That was one, but they didn't really,
they really have not invested.
So that we're bringing this all up.
Like sometimes you have to grow in a wild.
Yes.
And they've done that here.
Like I never thought they'd run a 34 front ever.
I know.
Billy Davis did when he came in here with, with Chip Kelly.
And that, even that was a surprise.
So yeah, look, you, that's why we can't pigeonhole
how he anymore on the way he does business.
He's kind of changed it up.
And that's why there's good as they have it.
Well, there's definitely a change that's undergone,
even more so, because there was a time
when, if the Eagles had, say, four core free agents
like they do right now, which is Dallas,
Goddard, Re-Blanket Chip, Jalen Phillips,
and who am I missing?
Oh, Nicole being mean.
That after they would come back from the combine
and get a better idea of the market value within that week
or eight days, whatever it is,
between the end of the combine and the start of the new year,
you would often see somebody get an extension
and stay before they hit free agency.
The fact that we've made it this far,
and the only extension we've seen,
we'll talk about is for Jordan Davis,
who is not going to be a free agent,
is an interesting, not a total twist,
but it's pretty new for the Eagles.
And I'm not going to say that none of those four
are coming back, but you would know
who they want to prioritize,
because those guys would have extensions
within two or three days of coming back from the combine.
Now, anything can happen, because we're listening,
people listening to this,
something can happen early in the morning after we record,
but the point is, if it gets to noon,
and none of those four guys get an extension
with the Eagles, that means they all have a,
I don't want to say, they all have a chance
to go somewhere else, which not was always the case back.
I mean, if they don't write, if they don't resign
by, or they don't have an agreement, right.
Right, doesn't mean they can't come back,
it doesn't mean they can't come back.
I want to be clear, I'm just saying,
the Eagles used to identify,
we don't want this guy out of the house, we'll get him signed.
And now that's changed a little bit,
we'll see what happens.
The big one is Jalen Phillips.
If it gets 12 noon eastern,
that's when the open period comes when the agent's
not the players, unless you represent yourself.
The agents, in this case for the Eagles,
who represent the Eagles for the agents,
they could talk to other teams.
Because basically the way it works is,
the teams that do it by the book,
they'll let the agent know, this is the way agents tell me,
they seem to come, but hey, we'll be in touch.
We want to do it though, you know,
well, we may hit you up sunny night,
but it's just to tell you where please pick the phone up
at 12 o'clock.
You know, that's funny,
because the first year of it,
I remember being in a hotel room
going ESPN the next day.
And this agent was blowing me up, he goes, dude,
I'm not getting any calls, it was Saturday night.
I said, well, what did the teams tell you?
They said, well, they weren't really sure how they had handled
because this is new for them,
because they'd always just tamper.
Right.
And now they're, now they just say,
hey, we'll be in touch.
Cause they'd let them know that hey, we're interested.
Now, there are times though, the Byron Jones one,
where when you're involved with a number one free agent,
you're not waiting until 12 o'clock?
You're, well, you're waiting till, you're letting them know,
hey, we want them, what do we got to do?
We want to be involved.
Yeah.
You know, whatever team it was Miami, Oakland,
and back then, and then they moved to Las Vegas,
but it was the Raiders, the Dolphins and the Eagles.
And yeah, that thing got so big, I mean, he, you know,
when you want a guy, you have to let the agent know,
what do we have to do?
It's like, I remember Rex Ryan talking about showing up
to the guys house, when you're allowed to, you know, whatever.
It's just, you got to show the love, but it,
now I do believe though, what we'll get to,
we'll get to this more later though.
There could be a little bit more involved
in a free agency than we're last year, but on your point though,
they may have even more to spend if, if,
if, or they may get involved in a trademark,
but if Phillips gets away, you know,
I mean, you're not going to know,
you're just not going to rely on Nolan Smith to be a starter.
They could get in the trademark.
They can get more active in the free agent market.
Yeah. And man, if Dallas gets away, which is possible too,
they really have zero at tight end as we have gone through.
I do want to point out there is one subtle change this year
to the legal negotiating period or whatever one of the
negotiating period is that teams are allowed to conduct
a one hour zoom with up to five free agents during this period.
But that path, I forget, did that rule pass?
It passed.
So that, I don't know, this could sort of be a thing
that changes free to sit dramatically or just none at all.
I have to, we have to wait and see.
But like if you're a free agent and you're got,
like you were talking about Byron Jones,
you got two or three offers and then you decide to give
a couple of coaches or teams an hour on zoom just to see,
you know, they're all close offers,
maybe feel more comfortable.
It could just delay, like you were saying,
like sometimes the big guys like a Trey Hendrickson, right?
He might be noon, fam, you'll hear a report.
Maybe it'll delay a little bit as some free agents
might give a team or two at the time of the day on zoom
just to figure out where they want to do.
I'm curious to see how the impact of that rule.
Yeah, I'm looking at the NFL Senate Friday.
They don't have, it's not in here of rules.
Yeah, I know Compel Sero had tweeted out earlier
day, obviously NFL media.
Yeah, yeah, well, he wouldn't, yeah, he wouldn't,
they would have sent it to him, but yeah,
because I know it's been proposed.
I just didn't know that it passed.
Yeah, the Steelers were the ones
that proposed.
Yeah, I was going to say the Steelers
are the ones who wanted it, yeah.
Yeah, it was actually the way Pell Sero phrased it,
it was quietly approved over the spring.
So that's probably why a lot of people aren't talking about it.
But the prosecuting of what it can be,
in the file that they sent us here.
But anyway, that's good.
But the bottom line is it's,
it's changed.
So when Jeff and I were first started
and covered a league, they would free
as you started 12 minute Eastern.
No, it was the worst, the absolute worst.
Awful.
Yeah, yeah.
And what happened was the clubs really started
to complain about it.
And agents always would, but the clubs,
they finally said enough, this is ridiculous.
So it's 12 o'clock today and Monday
is the open negotiating period, the legal tampering period.
And then Wednesday at 4 p.m. Eastern,
all restricted and unrestricted free agents
could start signing contracts.
And what happens is by Tuesday night,
all the top guys are gone.
Right, it's so much of the NBA.
But the NBA is more fast and furious
because you have short of rosters.
A lot of the contracts are basically
the veteran contracts are guaranteed.
They're worth more money than these NFL contracts.
But the difference is the NFL contracts,
the NFL rosters are way bigger than NBA and rosters.
So that's the comparison because people go crazy.
But what they don't mention in the NBA is that,
oh yeah, well, you're not paying 15 guys,
50 million a piece, you're paying like two of them.
Right, yeah, it's kind of different.
It is.
All right, so I wanted to get into the
Jordan Davis extension with you
and we've been talking to our listeners about it and viewers.
But before that, I really do want to report
even better news from inside the birds, all right?
For those who have been wondering and asking,
Greg Kosell will be back with us very, very soon.
The Intel with Greg Kosell, the first one
will come out this week where he'll recap with us
all the free agent moves.
We may get him on a second one later,
like the second wave of free agency.
And then pretty soon, we're going to start doing our NFL
draft preview shows with Greg where he will go through
every single position, all of the top players
and sometimes more than just the top players,
sometimes up to 15 to 20 players at each position
right here on inside the birds.
And then for our Patreon folks,
we'll get him to do some Ask Greg Kosell's.
They love talking to him and asking him questions.
Greg loves doing it.
So if you're one of our great Patreon members,
you will, and I know you've been anticipating it,
it will be very soon that Greg will be there
for Ask Greg Kosell's.
And if you're not a Patreon member
and you don't realize you can do these things
plus get every single podcast that we do in these previews,
we put them up early as well,
position by position for the draft,
all commercial free, all read free, all early.
You get it all, all access plus bonus contents,
ask an eagle, other things that we,
Adam does a great Wednesday live stream chat
with all of our great Patreon folks
and he drops a lot of intel on that.
So patreon.com slash inside the birds,
if you want to get in.
Yeah, cool thing about this with Greg getting him
back this week, we don't just recap.
We go in like, okay, this team's on this guy.
How's he fit?
What is schematically, what is this going to look like?
This is, we're really forward thinking
on that show, it's kind of cool.
And obviously, if the Eagles have do anything
by the end of the week, we'll probably do something.
So yeah, we'll get them in and break it down
and how that player will fit.
It's interesting because we did this last year
and it was great because we waited for like three,
because we could have said how many more players
do we need to have signed, you know,
so we do a good show and we get it.
And we're like, wow, this is like phenomenal.
All right, cool.
So again, patreon.com slash inside the birds,
you really got to get in.
It's just access and information and tell
that you just can't get anywhere else.
And let's get on to the extension here.
So the Eagles, like I said,
they didn't reach an extension
with any of their pending free agents yet,
but they did with Jordan Davis.
This is a guy at him that they picked up the fifth year option
on last year.
You know, we talked about his first few years
in the NFL, he had not developed into what they envisioned
when they traded up and drafted him.
But last year, you really started to,
I know it goes back to the end of 2024
when they really started.
That's why they picked up the fifth year
and believed that it would be worth it.
And then last year, you definitely saw him
from the day one of training camp, right?
But the weight loss, the better conditioning,
then the better hand technique, the better pad level,
all of that, it really manifested in the season
and he became a much more impactful player for the Eagles.
And he got a pretty big extension.
Yeah, so this was kind of a lock
and he was going to get extension.
I mean, it was just, we've known this for a while
that's going to happen.
We didn't know what was going to happen.
Like you said, they could have waited till July.
It just didn't matter.
It was going to happen this off season.
So they did it now.
And they know where the cash is going.
It's a three or extension worth
at 78 million, 26 million per season.
Haven't got the structure of it.
But typically it's like these all do with the Eagles
when they started changing it.
They have option bonuses every year
starting year two through the end of it.
You sign now through 2029.
Yeah, it's the fifth year option plus three new years.
And yeah, he changed agents.
And this is what we've seen.
We've seen like five or six players of the Eagles
the last year change agents and expect new deals.
And this was, we don't rank them,
but this is the one I thought was kind of like the most obvious one
because you mentioned it first two years, bad.
Save a couple of place here and there where you're like,
wow, this guy's, he's not in good physical shape.
Lost weight going from year two to three.
Okay.
Then lots of a massive amount of weight
where I remember going to train a camper
like where's his gut?
He doesn't have one.
Right.
He's not the jersey.
I'm like, this is incredible.
We'll see how well he plays.
Yeah.
And then, but you mentioned the technique thing.
That was the one.
Greg said this the best.
You could be 350 and be rocked up.
But if your technique stinks,
you play like you're 220 pounds.
And that technique is everything, man.
And he got it.
Now he, he did a lot of talking.
We heard behind the scenes about how much he is like,
hey, man, I'm doing this, I'm doing that.
It wouldn't happen.
But then it got it.
The light went on.
And this is a great learning experience.
Not only for anyone watching this,
but really in anyone who does player evaluation,
you have to, you have to, you have to stick it out.
It may look really bad.
And it did mid on inside the tape with Greg.
How many times did we show it?
Well, we started doing that show three years ago.
We're like, this is bad.
Yeah.
This is ridiculously bad.
Yep.
And then it, I mean, Clint heard, obviously,
had a big impact.
The D-line coach, that was a great hire by, by Vic,
because they worked together with the Bears.
And don't underestimate that move,
that I don't know this is happening with that Clint heard.
But Jordan Davis got his self in a great shape,
playing the right way.
And he might have hired a dietician or something like that.
He might have hired someone to cook his meals
or something at home, or seeing some interview with him.
He was taken and died seriously.
And you see it.
And then you question, because I remember
to start the season, we go, okay,
you're gonna know everything you need to know.
If he's playing less than 50% of the snaps, it's over.
Right.
You want to play 67%, which is two thirds, something like that.
66%.
It goes a little lower than that.
I thought it was 60%.
I'll give a second check on that.
But yeah.
But it was definitely way more.
He was way up.
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And look, he's never gonna be an A level pass rusher,
but you see a little bit better pass rush.
Right.
The thing is, it's all about tape with this guy.
Dominant football player.
Dominant.
And Greg was his harsh critic.
It was never personal.
I go, this is what the tape looks like.
It's not good enough.
Right.
But he had not had so much fun watching the player
in a long time.
The season.
It's a pretty good compliment.
Just to show you how far he came.
So they said at the end of 2024,
he really started to put it together a little bit more.
That gave them confidence.
But in 2024, Adam, he only played 37% of the snaps.
So think about that.
What do you think that looked like in the first,
say, 13 weeks of the season,
before he actually started a show,
like he was turning around a little bit over the last four or five.
So it was probably even lower than 37%.
But then last year, 61%.
61, yeah, that's, that's pretty good.
Big jump.
So when the numbers came out,
and I'm very curious to see the contract as well,
I thought, wow, 26 million a year
for a guy who even still only plays 61% of the snaps
when you compare him to like a Dexter Lawrence
or trying to think of,
there was somebody else I looked up at.
Leigh McNeil.
They all play in like the 70, 75,
or they play more.
I thought that's quite a bit to get like market resetting money
in that regard.
But then, as you just mentioned,
it's three new years on top of what is already in place next year,
where he plays at like 12 million on the fifth year option.
So if you average that out,
it's about 22 million a year.
And I thought to myself, okay, you know what?
I think that that makes sense,
especially if you're believing in this guy.
And especially if you have a plan going forward
to play him even more snaps,
which could be possible if they feel like,
yeah, they can get more out of him
from a pass thrice standpoint.
Yeah, and that's going to be,
I mean, to be 70,
the 75% play time guy,
he's just not that good with pass thrice,
or should a little bit more.
Right.
But the fact that he won from 37 to 61
is a really big jump.
And with Vic Fanger, you don't have to guess,
he's telling what he thinks.
David's the server to be on the field more, is it?
He said, it major impact player,
not only gets the run, just blown plays up,
because he's so massive,
he takes on two players.
And he's just any,
there weren't very many times as besties
in whatever he said,
bad technique, bad technique, really set it.
That's it.
You're right, you're right.
But you know what's good?
You know what's good about that?
I love that you pointed that out.
I wanted to make this point.
There were a couple of times when we did inside
the tape with Greg Kosell in a couple of games.
You know, they got run on a few times.
The Bears sticks out.
There were a couple of other games.
They all did.
The Giants game, remember,
when the game, the lost, they got ran on by,
who's the rookie?
What's his name?
The kid from Arizona State who got heard.
It's Skataboo.
Yeah, Skataboo and then the other guy ran on,
and then the quarterback ran on them.
There were times where we would watch those parts of tape
and you would see Jordan Davis playing a little high, right?
And I remember thinking,
uh-oh, is this like an ominous sign
where he's going to go back?
And no, there were just few and far between.
So when a guy that size, right,
especially playing a lot more than he used to playing,
you're going to have to expect every once in a while.
He's just, you know,
then a guy lining up across from him is pretty good too
and he may get high and lose his pad level.
That's going to happen.
The fact that he could respond the next game
and go two or three more without having that
be habitual was really good to say.
I'll give you another fact.
This one, I hadn't even thought of.
He hasn't missed the game since 2022.
He started 51 straight.
Wow.
Yeah, he started all of 23, 24 and 25.
We're just talking regular season games,
but that's really impressive.
Yeah.
It's, he's, then the next question is,
okay, well, what can he be?
Like, okay, he took this big jump.
We mentioned the snap counts.
Four and a half sacks, his combined tackle number
was major.
He career high and total tackles assistance.
So low 72 was a lot for a detackle.
Yep.
Because he's playing more snap.
He has more of an opportunity.
So is he a 20, you know, I don't know,
I don't know what's pressure right in front of me,
but is he an eight sack guy?
He a four and a half this season, which is career high.
Yeah, maybe, maybe is he,
is he two pressures per game?
And like, that's a lot, I don't see that.
But is he one of the quarter pressure per game, God?
Maybe, because he's gotten so much better,
and he cares, he always cared,
but he didn't understand.
And then something happened,
whether it's coaching, light, we,
and we all mature as we get through our 20s,
least we hope we do, and he matured.
And it's really remarkable,
because he was so bad the first two years,
and so overweight.
Yeah.
And it was just like, you shake your head,
like, what the hell did they say in this guy?
I know.
Now you see him get off,
he'll get off the line of scrimmage.
He, he does a lot of winning on first and second now,
because obviously that's when he's in mostly,
but when teams try to pass on first down a play action,
you've seen him just like bully a guard right in front of him
and get, get that quick pressure.
So it's a good, it's really, listen,
it's a really good trajectory,
and just hope that he continues to carry it over.
Now that he gets paid,
it does make us wonder,
interestingly that he got paid,
and Jalen Carter,
who's also up for an extension,
is not yet as a, as a recording this getting paid.
And I know there was a lot of stuff out there
over the weekend.
What do you, what's your view point
of this Jalen Carter situation?
What do you mean?
Again, I mean, the timing, you can wait.
I mean, Carson Wentz, one he was equal,
scored about got his extension in June.
Yep.
But we knew Carter was getting one.
We knew that Davis was going to get one.
We didn't know that he'd be first.
Right.
I know there's the ESPN story about,
they've been getting calls,
just so you know the way this works,
when this, when something like that comes out,
you're not dealt with this from talking clubs
over there, it's just three reasons.
The club wants it out there.
Either they want to move the player,
they want to see what kind of interest it is,
or they want the agent and player to know,
hey, we're not happy with this negotiation,
we could trade you.
Right.
I was going to say the agent also can do this too,
irrespective of if the agent isn't,
was hoping to be extended by now,
we can start doing these calls saying,
hey, you know, you want to trade for this guy
because he's not getting his money.
Oh, so many agents,
the smart agents,
and he is Drew Rosen,
by the way, Jalen Carter,
smart agents should be doing that.
Yep.
You know, like the club will get mad at you,
get mad if they know the agent was leaking the stuff.
I've heard about that before,
but anyway, so yeah, there's a reason for it.
I always say with this stuff,
when we've learned,
this is our ninth year,
is our ninth year of insether birds.
You never say never with howie,
in terms of trading a player like this.
I mean, he's Carter's like almost at once
in a lifetime talent,
but you've got both shoulders issue.
You got the off the field stuff
coming from college, not here,
but no, again, you're,
you're talking about,
you're talking about honestly,
30 plus million a year,
well over 30 million a year,
if he gets a deal here.
I mean, you got to be absolutely sure.
Yeah.
Okay.
When you something like you.
Each is,
you got to be absolutely sure
that you, you,
you want to give him that,
that's a,
that's a,
that's a big pillow swallow
if you're not sure.
You want,
you want to have this hanging over your head.
Yes.
I just,
I'm just,
I'm,
I'm not rolling him out,
being trade,
I would be not shocked,
surprised,
shocked.
I agree.
I learned myself,
I learned my lesson,
the dairy slave situation
being cut.
Right.
At 11,
it was like 10 or 11 a.m. Eastern.
I think it was like five or six o'clock Eastern that night,
not only were they not cutting him with a post June one,
they extended his contract,
gave more guaranteed money.
So I,
I've learned my lesson,
never say never man with this business.
Yep.
But the Carter is like a,
he is an incredible talent.
Mm-hmm.
But if you're concerned,
but, but look at this way though,
if Eagles are willing to move them off,
so they get a big hole for them.
That other team,
better be absolutely sure.
They're shoulders.
You better be, yeah.
You got to have to extend his contract.
Anyway, if you give up something,
if you trade for them,
it's going to be met.
A lot of compensation.
You got to extend his contract.
So you better be comfortable with it.
Right.
I think my radar would go up even more to this point.
If more or a jomo,
wound up getting an extension.
Uh, sometimes soon.
Right.
Which,
which, by the way,
doesn't mean they,
they wouldn't get Joe and Carter,
but I just think it puts,
I, I think you're making the right point here.
A,
they, they have every reason
to be in the community,
but not to be 100% certain.
He.
Came out of Georgia with some A,
some injury, history and B,
some obvious, you know,
off-fiel baggage.
While,
he's been in Eagle,
he has played at a high level at times,
but it also just this past year,
had major shoulder issues
that made him less of a player than he was.
He got ejected from a game,
spitting.
There were a couple of minor things here and there,
so absolutely.
also open up the lens year a little bit at him.
And you know how he's very forward thinking,
how are you gonna get Quintan Mitchell,
Cooper DeGene, Jaelix Hunt,
you just gave Jordan Davis money,
you might give Morro a Joe-Mo money.
That's, you cannot pay everybody.
So, I'm gonna come on.
Yeah, and he did.
Sometimes I think how he says things
like he's trying to let you know,
like we have difficult decisions to make
and things like that.
So, again, I would be surprised also.
I mean, this is the kind of player
that you identify, you draft high,
you wanna have for a long time,
but you're not gonna do it just to do it.
You need to be shown just like Jordan Davis, right?
They needed, he needed to show them.
He was gonna be a different player.
They can pick up the fifth year option.
That doesn't mean anything, right?
For the big money, you gotta show it to them.
And so, I agree.
I'm sort of waiting to see how this thing unfolds.
Yeah, it's, it's fascinating.
Now, if Jaelin Phillips is not resigned,
they're gonna be active in the edge market,
whether it's trade or whether it's someone like boy,
Maffe, or like whatever the best guys are
because the thing, you know,
talking to people who've dealt with Howie over the years,
other general managers and personal people.
He's just not, he is just chippin' her shoulder.
Like that's what, he's not perfect.
He's, all GMs are being mistakes,
but he always feels that duty
that he's gotta be, they've gotta be competitive.
They're never gonna rebuild.
That's not how.
Retool, yes.
Yes, coming out of 2020, they retooled.
And they got gradually better.
Really good sort of retooling, if you wanna call it,
but you trade Jaelin Carter way,
or you know, Carter's still here,
or you extend him, but Jaelin Phillips is not here.
Not that Jaelin Phillips is at A level,
edge rushery is a pretty good player.
You know, did, did well, didn't have a lot of sacks,
but a lot of good pressures, good, good player.
Yeah.
But Dolan Smith is just not showing off.
He's just not.
So did the,
Crosby trade to the Ravens help or hurt the Eagles,
because I'm thinking about it, well, now,
there's still teams that want edge rushers.
There's, there are a few teams that really stick out.
Like the Bears, they just seem like while they're moves they made.
And I think Trey Hendrickson's the natural connection
because he was drafted by the Saints
and played for Dennis Allen,
who is now the Bears' defensive coordinate.
That doesn't mean it's gonna happen,
but you know the Bears are gonna be active with their money.
So if that takes Trey Hendrickson out quickly,
then there's still a bunch of teams that need edge rushers
that you would think might view Jaelin Phillips
as the next best guy.
So the Crosby thing might hurt the Eagles a little bit.
And although it did take another team
that needs edge rushers, probably off the free agent market.
Yeah, well, there's so many teams that need edge rushers.
My goodness, I'm looking at my chart here.
Holy smokes.
Yeah, it's, yeah, there's a lot of bad teams in here.
What's that?
The teams to watch are the ones that are good
and have quarterbacks under rookie deals
or like the Seahawks who have Darnell
under a manageable deal, right?
Those are the teams that you gotta be scared of
because they got money
because their quarterback is good, not a rookie deal.
Chicago's got, I mean, they have to do something.
Yeah, commanders, those two teams jump out to me
as the most.
They got money to spend, they need edge rushers
and they have quarterbacks on a rookie deal.
Well, it's funny though because Adam Peters did say
on record, he goes, he's aware that they had the oldest team
and the NFL and they have to get younger.
Well, Hendricks is going to be 31.
Right, but he's a game, he's such a great player.
He fought, look, he was pretty beat up last season.
The hip injury was pretty bad.
But if I'm Chicago, to me, this is a game changer.
Might test what is a power end.
In IO Denbow, son of big for agent deal,
two years of fully guaranteed money.
Pretty much fully guaranteed for two years.
He's going off a torn Achilles.
So who the heck knows about them?
They have to do something and they got to suck it up
because they're not going anywhere without it.
They're pass rushers that is awful.
Yeah, it's not good.
It's your indeed.
And what you're right about Washington,
the thing is they were unreal that two years ago
and then came out of nowhere.
They were terrible, terrible injury situation.
Yeah, they have a, they need, they need major help at edge rush.
But I would, if I'm them, I might want to look at boy,
my favorite or away.
Only because are they really this close to winning the Super Bowl?
I don't know, man, they were so bad last season, Washington.
Yeah, that's a good question.
I mean, you don't want to tell yourself we're not there yet.
You want to make like the Eagles, man, they went from six and 10, right?
And then they were in the Super Bowl the next year by Carson Wentz
the second year.
And now you've got Jane Daniels in his third year.
You're not going to have them under under this kind of deal
for too long.
So if you have the opportunity to be aggressive,
I'm good young talent, you might as well do it.
So I guess I, I, you know, we'll see they,
I guess they let's be out of school, right?
And now I saw a report that they might be in on Linderbaum.
So we'll see.
We'll see here is my point is those teams that have the money
and have quarterbacks weren't making a lot.
Yeah, and look, they're, they're, I mean, honestly,
but I know that Buffalo's edge group is not good enough.
It was definitely not good enough.
They obviously made a big trade for DJ Moore
and he's going to make 24.5 million this season.
Yep.
So I don't know if they're going to want to add a lot of money,
but my goodness gracious, they have an edge rush problem
in the worst way.
Joey Boas is contracts up.
Hoi, yep.
I think, I think we've got hurt last season.
If I'm not mistaken, Michael Hoi.
Yeah, I think he got it.
I think he, yeah, he has the key got in Killie's injury.
So they have nothing, they need, they, they are an edge rush
or a big time edge rusher away from doing something
standing really, really, really good.
We're assuming DJ Moore will be good for them.
But yeah, I mean, it's just, you look at it.
There's the lines needed.
Their edge rush group is not good enough.
Other than Hutchinson, it's clearly not good enough.
But the bears to me, that's a game changer.
Hendrix, you got to, I know he's older, but you have to figure.
He's got at least years left at him again.
He doesn't have, he doesn't have a big injury history.
No, no.
No, he's a great player.
All right, let's, let's just remind everybody
what the Eagles are looking at with all their free agents
because they have so many on all fronts.

On offense, Sam Howell quarterback,
his contract expired, running back, AJ Dillon,
wide receiver, Jahan Dotson.
Now, it's not a huge loss at him because,
if he leaves because of the lack of production,
but you have to remember,
this guy basically was their number three receiver
when they were an 11 personnel
outside of the few times they might put Darius Cooper
or somebody else in there.
He was their 11 personnel three receiver.
That's not an easily replaceable guy.
I mean, I know his production wasn't great over the last two
years, but it's also not a spot that you just like,
you know, Tis-Tis-Gat.
That's a big loss.
Hey, I know a lot of you out there are just like me.

Camden Apothecary, top quality cannabis,
great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans
21 and up.
Yeah, and the question, though,
would be on 11th person.
How much are they gonna run under Sean Manion?
We don't know that.
But you have to have someone of quality.
And look, there are enough guys out there.
You'd like to, but what you really like is
the guy be able to play inside.
We know somebody can play inside.
He's, his numbers are good over the years
when he's done it, but he's not a true slot receiver.
You like someone who you know can play inside
who could dominate.
Yep, whether it's for one season,
or if you want to go with an established guy,
or you want to go with a younger slot,
I mean, either, or that you'd like to have one.
They really haven't had a true slot in a while.
Yeah, yeah.
So they'll have to figure that out.
And then to your other question,
well, maybe they'll be more 12 person.
Oh, well, guess what?
They face the same issue because Dallas Goddard,
Grant Calcutta and Kylie Granson are all free agents.
So that means they're only tight ends under contract
are Cam Latu, who they also converted to fullback.
And then Jahim Bell, is that accurate?
Yeah, he's on their end and E.J. Jenkins.
I need E.J. Jenkins, none of them.
None of them are number one or number two, okay?
Now, what they need to do with this new staff
is move Latu from fullback to tight end for goodness sake.
Oh, yes.
That was just ridiculous.
Having those cross the field blocks,
which he did too tough to execute.
That was a mistake.
They needed to get him back.
And Sierra and he would never answer the question one.
The reporters would rightfully ask the right,
because they're watching tape.
What's going on with this?
And he would never, he would always like sidestep the question
like he wouldn't, he didn't want to criticize the tool, I guess.
He was always, we put the personnel on the field
that we think has the best chance to succeed.
No, but it's the way you're using them.
And then also with Calcutta, yes,
he doesn't block very well.
But it was just the odd thing that
that Petulo and Jason Michael were asking
and maybe stout asking their tight ends to do,
particularly those guys.
But anyway, yeah, so you're right.
Tight end is a major problem.
Goddard, the way we see this is kind of the way
that how he typically does this is he,
they have interest in bringing him back,
but because of his age at 31, he just turned in January,
you stay in touch with the agent.
Let us know what you're looking at and see
if it gives a chance to match it, simply what he does.
And then sometimes ago, no, that's a really good deal.
Go ahead, man, we can't do that.
But no, if they get him back right,
that will have no impact on what they do in the draft,
like none.
Right.
Better not.
No, no, he really needs that.
What's that?
They really need a future title.
Yeah, big time.
But it does though, if they get Goddard back
and they team up with a first or second round pick,
there you go.
Hey, they did it when what are just 27 years old,
they drifted Goddard.
Isn't it funny how time flies now 35 years old?
Still wants to play.
Still wants to play.
With a second eight hundred and two.
All right, and then moving on,
we got the two offensive lineman that we've been discussing
for quite a bit, Brett Toath and Fred Johnson
two key pieces of offensive line depth
that are also going to be free agents.
And then you get to defense, Adam.
The three guys we've talked about,
Jalen Phillips, Nicobie Dean, Reed Blankenship.
But when you look at the edge group,
it's sort of like what we said about Titan.
You know, Phillips, Brandon Graham, Josh Uche,
Aziz Ojolari and Obo Ocaron Quo
are all free agents to be.
And if they all wind up,
well, we know Brandon Graham's not going anywhere,
but you know, I'm saying the point is,
you're going to have very few guys under contract by noon.
And that would just be basically Jalex Hunt,
Nolan Smith, and what Jose Ramirez?
Jose Ramirez, yes.
The back player of the year is going to win here.
So yeah, they're incredibly lean.
And if Phillips leaves, they really need to,
they have to have at least two edges.
Right now, if Phillips does leave,
it's Nolan Smith and Jalex Hunt,
and that's it in terms of potential starters.
And Hunt, you would think would be,
it's going to start.
He really came on in a good year.
Yeah.
He's really, he's upside, he's tremendous.
And then Nolan Smith is kind of a wild card.
Don't know what to expect from doing all the injuries,
the triceps injuries.
So yeah, they, but look, if they get Phillips back,
they still need another guy.
You need one more now.
What it means is, if that happens,
if that doesn't, you don't need anything special,
you could draft somebody, sign a journeyman,
because Phillips is what it's about.
If it's not, then they have to do something significant.
And that's, they're not going the all season
with Nolan Smith's starter, that's not happening.
And when I talk, either it's Phillips
or they make a trade or they draft somebody,
where they sign a veteran free agent,
the, I see, like, the guys are out there.
You to boy, my, a, a definitely, oh,
oh, they did very well after that trade, by the way,
after the trade from Baltimore.
Yeah.
It's the chargers, right?
Yeah, really well.
Yeah, they, they, they, they, they, they'll, they'll,
they'll be on it.
How, boy, the, the lit put my, what is this drop off
after those guys?
Oh, he's supposed to, they're like upside guys, like chasing
or first-rounder with the, Jackson was with the Patriots.
Yeah.
That's not good enough.
Evacates kind of interesting player,
but he's not a starter.
Another penalty.
Yeah, it, it's, it'll be tough.
It'll be tough, they don't get Phillips back,
but they're going to have competition
and that's the bottom line.
That's right.
And then in the secondary along with Blankethip,
as we have discussed, Adori Jackson, Marcus Epps,
also headed for free agency.
So to sum it up, and I think you've hit this on the head
quite a bit throughout the week,
he goes have a lot of holes, like more than usual
for this time of the year.
Now, they could bring a bunch of these guys back
and it won't be the case.
But as we sit here right now,
he goes got a lot of work to do.
Yeah, a couple things in closing here.
They'll spend more money and free agency this year
than they did last year.
I don't see how they could spend less.
And it was like, I don't have the final total,
but this is included in the Harrison Bryant
so the world that never made it.
And Ojalari got the biggest deal of four,
of about four million.
Right.
You're talking about, I think they spent
under 20 million for like 12 players.
Something like this is a ridiculous number, low number.
Yeah, it was joke was so into weeks ago.
I said, if Phillips comes back,
his first year cash number probably higher than everything
they did with trying to sign play from other teams.
Probably true.
But see, just so folks know,
the cash budget you're given for ownership,
this includes all you're spending.
So, and they don't tell you what to do.
You do what you want, but the problem is you can't go,
you can't ask for more money.
If you're given a cash budget for 26 of 300 million,
this includes extensions.
Yep, this is under this year,
whatever cash number they're under,
they're gonna be signing for it for this season.
Resigning your players, extending your players.
Signing for agents off the street.
Players you acquire in the draft.
Players you acquire in for agency.
So, you can't go back, I've asked GM's this
before said, absolutely not, well, I'm not gonna get fired.
Because what happens is if your owner's gonna say to you,
what, you didn't understand the market,
what the hell are you doing all day?
You know, they're gonna get on you.
So, that's why this budgeting is tough, man.
Last year was tough.
And then, how he made it pretty,
he was pretty, pretty truthful, I think, at the combine.
Like you, we're a draft and develop team.
We're gonna, we're gonna, we wanna resign our own players
and it's practically due for agency.
But what happens if you don't resign your own players?
Well, you have to go into for agency.
That's right.
And they've already spent some cash for this year already
with the Jordan Davis extensions.
That was, you know, whatever his signing bonus
is gonna wind up being is the cash that they spent
already this year.
All right, well, it'll be very eventful week.
We'll have free agency recap.
We'll have podcasts and pretty soon after that,
we'll have Greg Coastel to break down the tape
of free agents and it'll be exciting.
What's up?
Oh yeah, real quick.
So, if they do anything significant,
we'll do emergency pods, absolutely.
If they, even if it's losing players,
you know, if they lose two or three in one day,
you may have to do something.
And if they make a couple interesting moves,
heck, we'll do it too.
Yeah, it's always good for traffic.
It's always good.
