Jack Pugh's Tragic Passing: A Reminder of Mental Health in Sports

On April 1st, the Wisconsin Badges family got some heartbreaking news Tuesday night, former

tight-in Jack Pugh passed away at age 24.

He joined the program as a top recruit back in the class of 2021.

Pugh red-shirted his first year, then saw action in just one game during the 2022 season.

He also earned all Big 10 academic honors showing his smarts off the field.

In December of 2023, he stepped away from football for good, medically retiring due to

mental and physical health challenges.

He opened up about battling long-term depression and substance issues, saying football wasn't

the cause, but lack distractions had kept him from, prioritizing his well-being.

In his retirement announcement, Pugh thanked his coaches, teammates, friends, family, and

the Badger program for helping him build a happier life.

And strengthened his faith.

Those connections clearly meant the world to him.

As the Badger community grieves, Pugh's story reminds us all to keep talking about mental

health in sports.
