Welcome back to the Jeff Simmons show and I was off last week traveling and I've gone through a movement up for new house and Rob. Rob stains joining us today for a special guest last minute guest. I just struggling to come up some ideas for today and message Rob and he was always down to talk some see on football but I'm setting up a new kind of office. I love what you have going on here. You're one of those pictures in the background one of my motivations but I have this basement office right now. It's freezing down here and so I haven't put anything up in the walls behind me yet which is why it's blank. I have like my sports illustrated book. I got my bunch of jerseys in here. I might move upstairs. It's freezing down here. So I don't know how that'll last in the winter or in Canada. I don't know what's like for you in London but I might have to switch offices
before we get started but the camera's working the sound's working and Rob. Let's yeah everyone's asking where I am but I'm in my basement. This was going to be my new studio but it's cold down here guys like I'm wearing a sweatshirt. It's like very hot outside in Toronto. So Rob what's going on with you man? I'm really good so I'm supposed to be moving a house soon which is a shame because I basically turn this into an office for the purpose of doing things like this and having somewhere I could watch the NFL and then all the other sport separately from my family but in the new house that we're moving to there is an office area but it's just there's it's it's sort of in the loft so there's like stairwell in the middle of the room which goes down to where the bedrooms are and you know after a game Jeff I can be a little bit ranty sometimes and I just feel full that at four o'clock in the morning I'll wake the whole house up if there's just a if there's no door to separate me from you that so there is a room downstairs that I could turn into
an office but I'm just I'm really unsure whether it's it really should be turned into an office just for doing stuff like this so when I move I need a plan and I've not got one yet and I've kind of just pushed it to one side but I better come up with one pretty quickly yeah like I have like what I'm looking at this for in front of me I got like a Joey Gallo A jersey my hassle back a jersey my loaf of tattoo poochers the inaugural Thomas I was just going to frame this back wall here I have my sports illustrator cover right beside me I got all kinds of stuff but I got down here just it's beautiful outside I'm putting the same sweater as last night because I came down here it was down here it's freezing so yeah I've gone through the same thing my kids room would be right beside mine and like last night I was doing a show till midnight my time and I was falling asleep I had a great respect for you all of a sudden we had this big prediction show and like you can see halfway through the episode I'm just like fading and we we just did a lot of our move and I've a young kid at home so like I am not the night owl I used to be maybe it's just this week but better get used
to it I know you better get used to it because the season starts in a week I kept a leave you're heading out to Seattle aren't you when he heading over there heading out Saturday so Saturday morning I'll be driving I live about three hours away from London so it's there's there's two major really kind of major international airports in England one is Manchester which is which is only about 30 miles from where I am but it's the the Jeff the drive to get there you have to go over the mountains and stuff so it takes about two hours to get to Manchester even though it's just down the road and then and there's one in London Heathrow so I'm gonna get a Heathrow so I have to set off at nine o'clock in the morning the flight's not too about four whatever at four thirty something like that so in four to eight hours I'll be in the air and I guess I'll be flying over the atlanta to get this point on my way to Seattle just in time for the Apple Co. yeah sorry I had to move you the chat box was covering half your screen so there we go Jeff learned some technology so yeah anyway so that's that's exciting man like last time you were
at a game was with me at the Super Bowl and now week one coming up and yeah I'm curious for your ad like the preseason used to be like I think where you would learn a lot about the team and there was a casual build up where it'd be like you get one series then you'd get a half and then the backups would play in the final game now we're basically getting nothing other than depth players like we didn't see Gennari and Price the entire preseason we didn't see really any of the rookies that are going to play on this team so like coming out of the preseason where's your head out right now about kind of the new players on this team who are you excited to watch like how weird is it just getting into a regular season almost blind right now well on the one hand I'm I'm really pleased by that because I always felt it was just unnecessarily risky to have you start this out there and whenever we used to watch say peak russell Wilson playing a half of preseason football or even a couple of series Jeff it always worried me thinking that if he gets injured here that's the season over it's just not worth it so I've kind of hoped for a while that this would
be how the seal should approach preseason and now that we've had it I hope that it's not going to be any different than when they start the year I remember last year I flew out for week one as well and they didn't play very well and you kind of think well if you're going to if there's going to be sort of cobwebs to blow off and rust to remove in week one anyway why risk getting injured in preseason if that's just inevitable you have to work your way into a season and why worry about it so I'm glad that they've done it this way but what I will say Jeff is I think having the backups playing every game in preseason has it's it's taken away a little bit of the energy from the fan base because I think people have watched these games haven't been very impressed with what they've seen they've not been the most enjoyable games and people have then started to pick apart eye aspects of the depth of the roster they forget that Seattle when they play next Wednesday I'll be trotting out you know a really consistent productive offensive line from last year which is
something that you and I have wanted to see for years which still feels if it could take another level by the way another step to a new level this year you've got a loaded defensive front you do have a lot of star players on both sides of the ball you know another thing that you would often talk about over the years was the blue the lack of blue chip players and it feels like Seattle has some of those now so none of those guys have been featuring and now we get to see them next Wednesday so I'm what I want to see next week is a strong productive performance where we come out of it we know worries Jason Myers kicks all of these kicks and and we're all sort of feeling good again because I do think if just a little bit of a little bit of excitement's gone because the backups have been playing in the preseason games haven't been very good yeah I've kind of felt the same way like I've done shows with our guys and Brian and I'd say like the bottom half of the 90 man roster was not very interesting and like there's a lot of like Jared ivy got picked up by the Falcons
and Jamie Sheriff but usually there may be more interesting guys we get to see there wasn't a lot of guys who flash and sometimes that might be a reflection of the depth of the team but honestly most of the guys playing weren't going to be playing once the real game start so it's right like because Jason Myers missed a bunch of kicks and they've been signing cornerbacks left and right and things like that it does feel like the vibe of the team has kind of gotten a little iffy but like I've been telling my guys we haven't seen the guys who are going to play like you just said the offensive line the wide receivers everything that makes this team great Leonard Williams by Ramurfrey we haven't seen any of these guys yet since the Super Bulls so it's going to be nice to see this so I don't spend too much time on like the Patriots because I don't Brian did a show earlier on that and I'm sure you'll have some content on that but let's talk about the overall state of the team just going into week one I'm curious your thoughts like one of the things you're excited about what are the positives and what are the legitimate things you are worried about going into this game I think the positives are the proven nature of this roster now and the the fact that
you have so many good players and you know the the sea ox finished last season as a just an absolute juggernaut team you know to not lose a game from from that Rams game which they're almost one in LA all the way through to the end of the year and frankly Jeff you know a lot of those games weren't that close that they won I mean there was quite a few games and I'll admit I'll hold my hands up there are a few games at halftime I may have wrote some panicky comments in the comment section on my blog or on Twitter and you know and a few hours later people are coming back to remind me of those comments when I was panicking at halftime as they blow away the out at lunch of falcons in the second half or smash through the Carolina Panthers in the second half or whatever it was so this is a this is the kind of football team that I want to watch and it's tough physical trenches base football they have a quarter back who is proven you can win at the highest level now you know you've got some great weapons I think whatever happens with jadari in price it's still going to be exciting
to see in run of football and it would be good like you said because we haven't seen in play in preseason there was first few carries that he has I'm going to be sat on the edgima seat so what was this guy capable of and just imagine Jeff if in somehow in that first half he breaks off a 50 yard touchdown run when that would be really exciting to see so there's a lot of good things that with this team they are the defending champions for a reason they haven't in my opinion lost anybody that makes you feel as if okay you know that's a huge back breaking loss obviously I really hope that Nick him and worries available to play but if not well it's not going in the world you know it's it's a 17 game season not a one game season this isn't the Super Bowl like when he was injured for that game so there's all that to just be really positive about good team great coach great staff they're still a really good team the concerns it's it's got to be how is the new offensive coordinator going to get on you know that's a big mystery isn't it we don't we just don't know how he's going to be as a play caller I'd love to see him call an amazing game but
even clink kubiak I mean clink kubiak Jeff called an appalling game in week one last year what was awful so I kind of feel it's a little bit rich for me to kind of even hope that Brian Fleur is going to master this in his first proper game as a play caller and for that reason I kind of hoping that they do lean a little bit on the passing game because I think that Seattle's best bet in the first two or three weeks it's Donald J. Senn, Korp, Horton if he's available, Shahid, Jitai Tens I think that's what's going to be the best possible way forward rather than trying to rely on the rookie running back Georgia Lani and and a rookie offensive coordinator so you've got all of that there and then the other other concern that I have is I just you know I really do trust near my approach because I trust the coaching staff but in a weird way Jeff I also don't trust near my approach even though he's played well in preseason it's like seeing do it in a regular season game because I could just diseasely imagine him building on preseason in this contest and I
can also see AJ Brown burning him on the first throw of drape maze game on Wednesday so I really hope that he steps up to the plate but I can't say I'm confident I've seen it happen. Yeah the kupiak for you made I was about to say it when you said it and like I'm just hoping everyone if things do go a little poorly week one. be getting a stable their offense I don't know if he was like mine messed up to play Shanahan or what was going on there but I'm sure Mike I think Mike was pretty pissed off so I don't know what to look for in flurry but this is gonna be the first impression it doesn't mean look if anyone told me after week one that that team and win the Super Bowl I thought I thought dart old got a rod deal in terms of how he was being analyzed all the geno people were like circling around but I was frustrated but I would have never believed that team and win the Super Bowl the week one so week one is a historical outlier like last year in New England they made the Super Bowl they lost to the Raiders who finished last place so I know like 49ers are still bragging about that game but week one tends to be a liar and so it's I'm just curious like you talked about in the MI Pritchard that's a big question on the team do you have questions about any like the pass rush maybe maybe the depth of running back right now if price struggles a little bit like do you have any other
questions about the team really before I answer that can I just say I've written something for the BBC and I don't know if it's gonna get probably still not because it's quite hard the guy asked me to do it said would you mind thinking of writing a piece about the Seaworks for the main national site because you were there at the Super Bowl and you know the team well and he said just call me some ideas and I said well do you know I'll just write it and I'll just send it yeah and then if you want to use it you can use it and if not you know and he was oh if you're sure so I wrote it enough send it so we'll wait and see if that ever piece of a season like a day but I started that piece with a quote from a gentleman who was leaving Lumenfield at the same time as Robbie and I were in week one just shouting at the top of his voice I told you they shouldn't have traded Gino Smith yeah I told you all those people saying this about Gino's that Gino's the better quote about this quarterback stinks and and he was just ranting and raving and no one else really wanted to hear this guy's opinion but he was telling everybody around him that Gino was the best thing since sliced bread
and all of this and I remember this just really despondent walk back to the hotel 30 minutes it kind of takes the walk back with Robbie most of us most of the walk in silence until I started complaining and then we go and do a quick post game stream and just felt totally deflated by what we'd seen and if you'd attacked me on the shoulder then Jeff and said you've just watched the super ball champion fight like what the Niners I just didn't see it like it was unfathomable and it goes to show your points absolutely right that we have to put in and I could myself for this I'm not lecturing anybody else I have to remember this as much as anybody else you've got to put it into perspective sometimes it's hard to put things into perspective when you've traveled 5,000 miles to watch a game of football but you do have to put it into perspective and acknowledge that the sea ox might lose on Wednesday it's totally plausible that they lose this game but it won't really decide anything at all in the broader context of things they came flying back last year
they then lost a game against the Tampa Bay book and ears which was miserable to experience and they still just built and built until they became the best so yeah I think it's interesting and I really hope that piece sees the light of day and that people check it out if it does and then with the pass rush I think it's an interesting question you've raised there because it's not something I've really thought about because on the one hand I think everybody expects well this could be a really big year for Byron Murphy it's his opportunity to max out his earnings by getting a new contract and the best way to do that Jeff is to hit say double figures in sacs or something like that you know that'll really give him a chance to be be extremely wealthy in a years time you've then got you know then Williams being back and settled he's a game record such a fantastic player can Riley Mills produce in a in a support role and I think because you have those interior defensive lineman I think the pass rush will be okay if you're in a really healthy spot because the pressure from the interior is what we'll set everything up and that's what Rex Games and that's
what destroys games unless you've got a Miles Garrett or somebody like that but if that doesn't if I'm wrong I suppose there is a little bit of a question mark off the edge like Canderic called finally become more consistently productive you know Demarcus Lawrence is a year older it felt like a year ago he'd got the bit between his teeth because he'd he'd got a bit of a spack going on with Michael Parsons and you know he'd never want a soup bowl and this was sort of a chance to come here and try and do something special and he's done it now so as he's still got the juice I suspect he has I'm just sort of thinking out loud here you know where's Chenera at his age where's Dante Fowler at his age you know I've they got enough of the edge question mark can the interior make up for it possibly would I feel better if they had a really dynamic edge Russia even if it was a new rookie dynamic edge Russia Jeff who'd fast in preseason maybe I would
would I feel like Seattle nailed on to in the soup bowl if they traded for Max Krosby yes I would is there still a possibility that could happen yes so maybe it's just we'll see how it goes and if it works great and if not maybe they'll get busy in the trade market yeah I gotta ask was the guy yelling about Chino Smith was that Ben Solak was he up to game I didn't see him I mean if I had I may have the thing is though is I say I would have got and say something Jeff but I don't want to I don't want to sort of say something that I wouldn't have actually have done because the thing about here in England is you know we we don't often go over and confront people in fact there's a very British thing to do to be completely have a terrible service in a restaurant and not say anything about it like that's a very British thing to do and and when you and I what past Pete Prisca at the Super Bowl and I would have thought that there would have been part me that would have been just for like 20 years of following the NFL and being annoyed at various things Pete Prisca was said I would have gone over and I'd
Pete you know but we didn't we both know Pete Prisca walked straight past him so I don't want to say that I'd have got to Ben Solak and start having it out with him but it was not him it's I mean he Ben Solak was not alone in the in the Gino obsession was he but he was definitely a strong candidate there yeah it's just that all jokes aside but yeah I'm curious you want to bring back something you just said because it's a weird feeling for me right now because like I'm still trying to ride high on basically last year it still feels surreal that the season starts next week I like I don't want last season to end really because it was just such a dream season like we just talked about but usually like I'm pretty on edge when the years about to start like especially with the sea oxlally it's been like the last off season was pretty tumultuous in the national media I would be in you I think we're on the same side towards the end of the Russell Wilson era it just felt like we were just going through the motions until he got traded and then the end of the p-carol era it was just like okay like are we really doing this again like this seems sucks
on the offensive line I don't have a lot of stress right now maybe outside of Jason Myers who we might talk about a little bit but I was saying on my show last night and maybe this will change once the season kicks off but it feels like most of my like angst or stress is just hoping the ramp somehow fall apart this year like you mentioned Miles Garrett and that team and they obviously brought Aaron Donald out of retirement like they're the closest thing we've seen to like a super team in the NFL with like the level of talent they have they definitely have questions but on paper they're one of the best teams in the league in a long time especially that defensive line like is that where your head is at or is it pure sea ox focus well worried about the Rams this week 16 it doesn't general like where are you at on this Rams team and heading into the season yeah I'm totally relaxed about the NFL season for the first time in a long time Jeff and you know I think the the the way that Seattle lost the second Super Bowl created a lot of problems for a lot of people and I put myself right at the top of that list because for me felt I felt like I it's not
as much as for the team but I felt I needed to just square my own mental health over that loss right by winning another Super Bowl and to get presented an opportunity to win another Super Bowl to be there as you and I both were yeah and for it to be against the bloody Patriots was just like this is too perfect it sort of felt like it was a dream like sequence that that I couldn't have scripted that and I couldn't have written down on a piece of paper a better way to sort of finally quench that thirst and it was like getting out of the Sahara Desert after 11 years or 12 years or every it wasn't been handed the most enormous bottle of water ever and it's the best water you ever taste the cleanest water and then then being far the best beer you've ever had or whatever so it was it was fantastic and I kind of feel as if you know it was short of something else horrible happening in the next two or three years that being in Santa Clara that day and being able to witness that I don't think I'll ever want for anything else Jeff and of course
as the season goes along there will be things that we're not happy with and there will be things that we're complaining about and there will be things that we talk about that are not entirely positive as there would be in any NFL season because you know who wants us just to sit here and go yeah well the C-OX lost 14 over we wanted to Super Bowl in 2025 like it that's not how it works that'd be a very boring existence but at the same time I don't think I'll ever be truly stressed again about the C-OX because I feel as if the one thing that was giving me more angst than ever finally gone away that's to sort of bring it back to how I how I feel about the Rams and stuff like that as potentially Seattle's biggest rival and perhaps the biggest threat to them getting back to the Super Bowl I'm just interested I'm just intrigued as you said that they're like a super team but I know if I was a Rams fan Jeff I'd be thinking oh god you know we came so close to you we've got to we've got to do it now we've put all the chips into the table we're not going to have Stafford for much longer McPay might not be here for much longer Miles Garrett's a short-term
measure not necessarily a long-term one Aaron Donald's come back that's a short-term thing maybe to one one year and done so it needs to be now and when you're living that has to be now world that does create stress and pressure now if there were any Rams fans to feel that stress and pressure I imagine they'd be feeling it but they're on so you know there's a handful of them but but with as we as we kind of look at them as a rival I'm just interested to see how it goes because the point that I keep going back to Jeff is great you've got Miles Garrett great you've got Aaron Donald great you've tried to improve your quarterbacks I I tepoh out of them for being as aggressive as they are I'd like teams to be aggressive but I keep going back to this Matthew Stafford's last season came from nowhere he was not a 40 touchdown 5500 yard quarterback before last year he was a banged up quarterback who missed time who was turning the ball over who didn't play very well in 2024 until the playoffs and then he produced that last year I don't know
if you can do it again Jeff I mean he's nearly 40 now maybe you can and if you can fair play like he is a he's got some balls that guy so fair play to him but I'm not sure he can and if Matt Stafford's play drops off will it matter that they've got Miles Garrett maybe maybe that'll be enough to to to handle that drop off I'm not sure it will yeah that's the team it is fascinating like I don't know how much you fall like the NBA but like when the Miami Heat got LeBron it felt like every fan base outside of Miami was cheering against them and it feels like the national media doesn't quite realize that's how the ramp are kind of being felt right now or just feels like everyone's invested in them losing because everyone like Daniel Lovsky's talking about Matt Stafford being like a top 5 quarter yeah I'm gonna have to save that for my Twitter cop segment this week but that was that was absurd absurd take but yeah I'm just curious to see what they're like it's gonna be fun to cheer against them like we got to cheer against Russell and Denver Broncos that year
where we had their pick but I almost feel like if the Rams don't win the Super Bowl and if you're a spiteful person or if you just enjoy some people get more joy out of there like when the Niders lost the Super Bowl to the Chiefs like I got a lot of joy out of that maybe more so than like some big Siobah wins because there's no pressure if the Rams don't win the Super Bowl I think the season will be extremely like they should be the favorite on paper they look really strong but you brought up good points but if they don't win the Super Bowl and that's the question like who else in the NFC Robb I'm curious just kind of previewing the season like who else do see as a contender in the NFC if he takes Seattle and the Rams because I think those two are consensus top two like is there another team the NFC you think can make a run this year? Not really because I wrote a piece about it and I think it's I think it's very much short of any kind of horrible injury situation which I wouldn't wish upon the Seattle's all the Rams short of any kind of bad injuries for either teams to keep players I think they're on a collision
course again I think I think it's I think it's these two teams before the Miles Garrett trade Jeff I was sort of sat there thinking I've missed something here like why have the NFC teams not done more to to try and catch up like it felt as if it had been quite a pretty quiet free agency in draft that nobody had really taken a big step forward that these teams that you could say maybe on the fringes of contention that could get there alliance of packers whoever else you want to put in like the Eagles getting back to the top it didn't really feel like they'd done enough or done anything really like they'd just kind of carried on like the okay let's just go again next year and and then the Rams traded for Miles Garrett and made it clear we're winning the offseason trophy not that you get anything for that but they they made the big splash that I would have expected other teams to perhaps try and make in order to to get over the top of the mountain so there's always a chance that like who knows if Jeff it seems unlikely doesn't it but let's
imagine a scenario where everybody on the 9 as roster stays healthy in place of four year yeah there's no reason why they couldn't be I mean they won 12 games with half a roster out so there's no reason why they couldn't be difficult to get but I don't have any faith in them staying healthy as their year older and and just they just seem like a calamitous franchise at the moment like you kind of wondering what's going to happen next like is is like a spaceship going to land on on the stadium in Australia and just suck up all the 9 as players and take him off to Mars like what's it's just one thing after another with them so I don't really have any faith that they'll be able to do it and I don't trust the Eagles and the Eagles of yeah I like they've changed their offensive coordinator yeah they're putting a complete novice who's who's never even it's been into culture five minutes that does anybody really think the Lions have improved enough to be go from what they were last year which was kind of you know hitting missed to all the sudden back to being a 14 and 15 win team does anybody really trust the packers to like take a step
the one team I suppose the people will look at Jeff at the Bears but the Bears relied last season on the most improbable run of oh we're losing by 20 but we win by a point kind of games and and I just keep thinking back to what if you really want to judge how good the Bears are the week before the Seaworks absolutely smashed the Niners all over the field and then played them again in Lumin a couple of weeks later and humiliated them the Niners beat the Bears in a shootout and have the Bears improve their defense at all since that that season I've got worse so what we're saying that Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams just have to be even better next year maybe they will be but can you win a Super Bowl that way with a crap defense I don't think you can every game day you show up for your team now it's your time ask your prescriber about Wigovie some Maglatide injection 2.4 milligrams a GLP one

do they have a past past rush outside of in Hutchinson I don't think there is and we don't know if Drew Petson is going to be great at the play call or he was Arizona's guy what made them special was they had a talent advantage with Ben Johnson in those great drafts and those teams should have won that team should have won the Super Bowl Detroit when they hit on those drafts sort of like Seattle did and they never quite they couldn't put it together they blew that gaming in San Francisco so and then they lost the next year to Washington and so I feel like there's more teams I'm skeptical about so I'm curious yeah go ahead can I can I ask you about a team because there's one team that I'm a little bit curious about and it's not that I think it's not a prediction that I think they're going to do really well there anything but I am fascinated a little bit by the Vikings and just because you know two years ago they won 14 games and some Donald obviously moves on then and then they've completely fall apart last year until in fairness even with a terrible court about situation they went on a winning streak at the end of the year they do have a Brian Flores defense which it can cause teams problems and they did cause Seattle problems in Seattle even
though it wasn't the defense that that lost that game and I think O'Connell is a good play caller now do I trust Kyle Murray not really but Kyle Murray is is he also one of those players that if he could yeah is he is this a wake up call for him you know he's been released you've now got a fresh start you know if you want to carry on playing in the NFL this has to work this year otherwise you're out and does it focus his mind a little bit and and he'll know his agent will say if you play well here you'll get a three year contract either here or somewhere else and I bet if he plays well this year the Vikings are not going to let him walk because they'll have been burnt from the San Donald situation so he's looking at this now thinking here's an opportunity for me and even if he's not good over three or four years with him he'll think I've got to be good this year to get the contract so I wonder a little bit and he's got Justin Jefferson and they've got a couple of others there I just wonder will Kyle Murray play at least well enough for the Vikings to have a decent season
I don't that I'm not suggesting for a second that that means they get to the Super Bowl but could they be a high win team again as they were two years ago and then go into the playoffs as a dangerous team who maybe lose the first week of the playoffs again or whatever but ultimately you might not want to play him yeah there were those teams that there are just a bitch to play against like you saw what with no quarterback Max Brozmer was maybe like the most inept quarterback I've seen in like five years in that game and they gave the they gave the C.O.X. offense a ton of trouble Brian Flores just ripped apart our protection schemes and Darnold couldn't do anything they couldn't run the ball if they just have competent offense I think they're gonna be really good but the question it's just Kyle Murray for me like I've just seen the same thing over and over where he starts fast he does really well and then he just fizzles down the stretch once the game gets a little harder and he needs to make but again we've only seen that with Cliff Kingsbury who also had that pattern in college where he would start really
fat clicks kick Kingsbury had Patrick Mom's a Texas tech and wasn't that good of an offense and somehow he parlayed that into head coach and job so yeah no one steals these there now I think this they saw House John Schneider's handle the quarterback situation and I'm sure they're going to be watching him close because they then not only let Darnold out of the building they let Daniel Jones out of the building too and JJ McHurkin's saying isn't it it's not gonna be as good as the C.O.X. offense season was last year I think the Vikings is one of the worst off seasons we've seen in the last 30 years in the NFL well why else would you bring in Daniel Jones because they brought him in mid season surely with the idea of preparing him as the alternative to Donald if you don't reassign Donald so they let Donald leave and that Daniel Jones leave well that got the GM fire right and the coach left the GM out to dry and that's kind of the politics of the NFL but yeah they let two starting quarterbacks out of the building who are on good value contracts they could have franchised Daniel Jones or given him good money they got out bit by the Colts who are kind of that team going nowhere also and they were playing pretty well
last year so and then JJ McCarthy the whole Michigan class has been weird but yeah one of the things that I'm curious about just to shift the conversation even further um who are the coaches and I don't know if you have one or two at the top of your head but who are the guys and this happens every who the guys you think you're gonna get fired after this you're like who are the guys you can just see just tanking with sear and I said Aaron Glenn last night he just was seen with the obvious one but who are the guys that you think like this could be the last run for I think top bowls potentially in Tampa Bay it just feels as if I think top bowls is a good coach and I think of a very reasonable slightly old school head coach and I think you're always going to get like a base level of performance from his teams because of the way he is but it does feel a little bit Jeff like he's flattered to deceive in a number of years now where like they show a little bit of promise and they never deliver on it and um if that happens again and nobody seems to be that excited about the book and ears if that happens again can you really just carry on
doing this year after year or do you have to go and have a look at something else so I would say top bowls certainly for one I would suggest I mean I don't know that the Eagles are quite aggressive on the Nick Sireani's only a couple of years removed from the Super Bowl but then didn't they sign this didn't they fired Doug Peterson about three years after he won a Super Bowl so you know they'll have to be up there again I think Dan Quinn is very much in the firing line yeah I'd say he's probably as light clears are in Glenn maybe to end up leaving I think that's a really good call like if you follow their training camp it sounds really they lost Laramie Tonswell they don't really have a left tackle and for them having a rookie contract quarterback on a rookie contract usually stack those teams and they aren't stacked at all they have a very average roster and a bad offensive line I think one of the reporter said it's one of the worst offenses and they got a complete unknown offensive play call David Blow who's calling
plays for the first time so I like Dan Quinn as a coach I'm happy that the Seahawks ultimately ended up with Mike McDonald but I think the GM and the coach there have done a pretty bad job since that first year and I think ownership is going to be like we need to sell hope and I think Dan Quinn's going to end up getting the raw deal out of that but yeah I was trying to think of some other surprises and I couldn't nothing like jump to mine like I know we talked to the last night about Shane Stikin but I don't know how exciting that is from a Seahawks perspective and yeah I think it's a lot of the same faces but I want to bring back to the Seahawks for a second as we count on can I make you want give you one name yes that would be a surprise I don't think you'd be fired but I just wonder with everything that's going on if it doesn't go well for Kyle Shanahan this year does he say I want a change you know I need to take a step I need a year off for something I'll come back in a year with a different team and go again that was our most contested conversation last night on our preview show and yeah I do have a lot
of questions about everything going around there because I just see the path of the 49ers so similar to what happened to the Seahawks after losing Super Bowl 49 like almost year for years crazy identical and this on there like last year would have been there 2016 where we got smoked by that Kyle Shanahan Falcons and they got smoked by the Seahawks were just looked like they didn't have the talent to hold up it was until all the same names from when they lost the Super Bowl just like the Legion of Boom thing it was all the same names the drafts got stale I know Dejon the John Stryplings had a pretty good camping to your credit you were pretty high on them I remember trying to laugh at that pick and you're like no no no this guy can play so but with the ownership situation going on with Jed York Shanahan getting into a car accident they've had like sort of the op-season John Lynch has a quite learned like it's kind of making the same mistakes John Schneider did coming out of like the Seahawks did get tired of the walk at the one draft that might be struggling for them but yeah they have potential to like have so many different seasons and because they're so old that
all the core players trend Williams McAfrey boasts have been injured kiddos old like they if things go sideways I can just see ownership being like you know what like we're paying too much money to not compete or I can see Shanahan being like where are we like he probably loves Brock Pertie but outside of him it's not a very young and exciting roster like there's not a great future right now they have a long way and it's sort of what happened with Seattle they stayed at that 910 win mark really until last year where they kind of got out of that cycle because of those drafts and I think they're I think they're setting down a bleak path that if the Seahawks didn't have that Russell Wilson training it would have got really ugly in Seattle I just wonder he can't be fun and maybe I mean I don't know Carishan and it's all so I don't know how he he processes all of this but even little things like having to do with Brandon Ayug for the last year like that was a headache before he signed his contract Jeff like the the the having to deal with Ayug before he signed the contract they didn't get him to sign the contracts he then
gets injured he's then come back and it's been all this chaos off the field I bet Kyle feels devastated by it like let down frustrated annoyed a bit embarrassed by it all probably feels like he probably went and banged the table for Ayug and now he's got to look at ownership in the iron go yes I wasted millions and millions of your dollars you've got stuff like that you've got the numerous back breaking injuries you've got a couple of really painful super bowl losses you've you've got people constantly asking you about an electric substation you know half only half jokingly and increasingly not jokingly at all you know what if Nick Bolster gets another knee injury in the first month or George Kiddles Achilles explode again like eventually you you just you might turn around and just go I think I've had enough especially when you've had the car accident as well and the owners getting up to his escapades in Ohio so you you might just get some point where you go I don't know about this I think maybe I need to just take a step back and if he did do that
if he took a year off next year he would be able to name his price to any opening and also teams would position themselves whereby even teams you won't expect to fire a head coach if they felt they could get Shanahan would probably be willing to do it so I think that's an interesting one to follow of course if the owners have a great season he's probably not going to do anything like that but we'll see what happens I kind of there's one other thing that I would just I'd just mention here in the in the on the off chance of it seeming quite profound in about eight months time Jeff is Joe Brady just because you know they moved on from Sean at Dürmitt and they're just the points of the offensive coordinator and and Josh Allen's friend now they've given the course about what he wants but we don't know if Brady can head coach we don't know if he can do that like he might not be any good at this and if the bills flop badly in their first season in
that new stadium the owners might go well we've just made a mistake here and there's been quite a few recently one and done yeah head coaches so I that's another one I'd keep an eye on yeah we're here with Rob Staden and we're doing crossover on the Jeff Simmons show everyone notices my improved camera improved picture as I was saying earlier I moved houses this week I've been talking about this on the show for a while so I gotta decide if I'm keeping this office or moving up stairs still but yeah Buffalo would be a team I'm kind of I'm nervous about like Buffalo is my local team in Toronto I follow them pretty closely actually used to cover the bills a little bit not when they were good I cover the bills and they were terrible but I just look at the roster and it seems still like the only addition was DJ Moore which they ultimately overpaid for like they passed on Caden McDonald in the draft they have like they haven't added to they've
been trying to do like the veteran pass rusher thing for a while they did Joey Boasa and Vaughan Miller now they got Bradley Chubb and they paid him a ton of money like it's like they've learned no lessons they just haven't infused any youth into the roster outside of like James Cook and the offensive line and it just feels like kind of what the chiefs have gone through the last three years were the talent ranger I and yeah it's just like two years ago you would have said it's always bills chiefs and Ravens no one else really has a chance and seems like that faded out pretty quick because of just poor roster management across the board and put some poor coaching and Baltimore and Lamar Jackson has started to slow down in his athleticism to start to fade a little bit so do you think this will be to be learned that though because you're quite right like it did feel for time like what the bill's always been the bills and the chiefs will always be the chiefs and the Ravens will always be the Ravens and then last year the bills got to the playoffs but never quite looks convincing in a way that perhaps they had in the past the Ravens didn't win the AFC North did you get that they lost them that late kick against the Steve a bad Steelers team will not
division and then the chief didn't even make the playoffs and pits in the top 10 in the end and you just think yeah it makes you realise that you know as the C-OX every game day you show up for your team now it's your time ask your prescriber about Wigovie some Maglatide injection 2.4 milligrams a GLP one call 183-3-4 Wigovie or visit Wigovie.com to view the medication guide and to learn more about Wigovie. There might be another three years at this group. How do you want to approach that? Do you want to be aggressive to max it out? For me, I think Jeff, if you win another super bowl in the next three years, I think you call it a great job or a brilliantly done. Unbelievably done. If you don't, but you're competitive, I still think you have to say well done. I think you've got to give yourself the best possible chance while the window is open.
To go and get another one now. It's great. They are going to have to replenish talent with rookies because the pain a lot more people now. rookies are in price replacing Ken Walker. There's going to have to be some of that with the amount of the draft picks next year in what looks like a deep draft. I also think, Jeff, there's still room to be aggressive to add amazing talent to try and get back to the top while you're in this window, which may only be two or three years before you have to have a little bit of a refresh. It was nice to see them keep Leonard Williams because I think both me and you were in that worrying just even for this year, was he coming back? We already know to Marcus Lawrence. This is the last year and when I studied the three or outlooks of this roster and earlier in the summer, the offense for the COX looks very healthy, assuming they keep Darnal around because Darnal price, JSN, Shaheed, those are Barner, Auroio, those guys are going to be around for the next three years. The entire offensive line essentially at maybe outside of Anthony Bradford.
Probably going to be sticking around the next three years. On defense, there's going to be a big turnover. Willispoon will be around, even Worry will be around. Ernst Jones was only two years left. I think that's one year left beyond this season. Leonard is now back, but Jaron Reed, Lawrence, when the COX came out of 2013, they lost the Red Brian's and the Clemens. That's going to be the Jaron Reed and Lawrence next year. They're going to have to replenish that depth. Then they're going to have to start to infuse more. We've seen what happened at the cornerback position this year. I think me and you were both pretty comfortable walking from Rik, but I think there is a legitimate question. Was the plan to replace them good enough and should they have drafted a corner in the first round instead of price? In terms of moves you're looking for, is that move more trades this year? Is it more offseason stuff? Where do you think they would need to make the splashy move to keep this thing rolling? I think for me, it's always going to come up to what you do in the trenches. I think the offensive line looks settled. I'm still very open-minded about continue. Obviously,
they took both Stevens this year and traded it back in to get him. I'm still very open-minded about continuing to just draft your own line and draft your own line. John Schneider said that in the piece he did with Jeremy Fowler on the offseason. I think it was the big thing. It was a great quote to read because he was saying, last time they didn't do enough to replenish the stocks and keep drafting and have lots of competition on the own line. It's great that he's acknowledged that and he's going to do things a bit differently. But also, it's your pass rush. If you have a quarterback who can do everything that you need to do, which Donald can, and you've got some good weapons and you've got a line that can help you run and pass block properly, if you then have a terrorizing deep rotation on the pass rush, if you can rush with four, I mean, just look at it, Jeff. What are the Rams doing this year? The Rams have said, we want our dealines better. That's Garrett, Donald. It's dealine, dealine, dealine. Look at the eagles when they've won their two Super Bowls, dealine, alline. You look at the chiefs when the
chiefs won theirs, Chris Jones. Frank Clark having a big playoffs and every time Frank Clark played a playoff game, he got a couple of sacks like it felt. And you could go back to others, I'm sure I'm missing others as well, whereby you just look at the defensive lines. They're the reasons why you can Denver. Denver won a Super Bowl without a quarterback on the field. You're like, I could play a quarterback that day because the dealine, the pass rush, Von Miller, you know, it was great. It's been able to rush with four. It's constantly been able to say, our four can be your five and whenever I wish one of the throwers, and we're still going to get to your quarterback and we're still going to force mistakes and we're going to force turnovers. If you can do that consistently well, then you're going to be up there. And I think this is this is something I'm really conscious of, it's sort of striking my lay-ins hot. And I don't know how you do that sometimes. Like you could say, should every other team have anticipated
the Neil Hunters availability a bit more than they did? You know, it never really felt as much buzz there, but he's ended up proving quite an inspired addition for the Texans. And then you know, you look at that crossbees there and I understand the price tag was very high when the Ravens traded for him, but if a player like that becomes available, is it worth even if you pay a little bit more than you comfortable for, as long as the hell's okay to get somebody and who can help wreck your games? And do you just have to sort of be on the lookout constantly, which I'm sure the Sieg's are, because that's how they operate, to try and find those players. And also, if there's one thing maybe they could do, Jeff, it's to maybe draft higher those positions a bit more often, like to take a few chances, like they didn't take a pass rush of it in this draft. Like could they've found a way to do that? You quite rightly mentioned the cornerback position, but was the, you know, Schneider mentioned again in that foul of piece, we were, you know, the position we missed out on was pass rush. Well, should they've made sure they came back with the pass rush, given the new what was going to happen? And that Muffet had moved on,
and that you've got some older guys on you on your roster. So they're going to have to do something that that will be the key for me over the next few years to sustain quality, your ability to get off to the call, but it's it's so true. And so I'm just curious, before I like we changed the conversation and we're going to get into this, I know we've been on for 50 minutes now, but college football season started. I want to ask you some questions about, you know, before we do that, can we, can we just talk about Jason Myers? Because he teased that. Well, that was my next question. I was going to be okay. I want to give you some rapid fire, sea ox stuff and the number one thing, like coming out of the preseason, the number one takeaway for me was like, what the hell's going on with this kicks? Why are they all drifting right? Like, how do you miss that many kicks? What, like, where are you out with that? Like, is it just getting the out of the way now? Like, he's 35 this year, he's in the contract here. Like, what, yeah, you were you want to talk about this, like, where you at? Well, it's, it's, when, obviously, it's been a lot going on in just in Tuckers live, hasn't there? Yeah. And I don't know what you're talking about. Yeah. What I was going to say,
though, is I don't know if that it was the reason why his, his, his forms still fell away, but he was practically automatic, wherever he was on the field, until he wasn't anymore. And then he was pretty awful. And, and now I'm sure he would have got other opportunities if he wasn't for this horrible situation off the field. But even still, he was pretty terrible before they cut loose. And then, you know, there's, there's one or two others like, he's felt like Harrison Book has gone that way as well. Like, he's his kicks have, have seen, he's not as consistent as he used to be. So when it goes, it does go. So my feeling after the Titans game was to sort of say, everybody just can't down a little bit, you know, it's preseason. It doesn't really matter. Special teams, kick coverage was terrible a year ago in preseason. And there was lights out for the whole regular season. It's to sort of feel that way. But then I was watching the Chiefs game, Jeff, and he's missed another extra point. And then he gave winning kick. And if you just kicks that, you think, okay, well, at least he got that one and he can move on now. And he misses that as well. So it cost you
the chance. It doesn't even get away over time. It's like, no, that's the end of the game. That's the final moment. It doesn't get a chance to rectify it. It's just that's it. It's a tie. So, um, I think that's made me sort of think of it more like I'm not telling him it to calm down him or I get it. It's, it's a thing. I do think he deserves the space to get this right without feeling any more pressure than he's already under from all's from from fans from media from whatever. And I think he's got that. I've not seen it. I don't think anyone's gone over the top this week. Yeah. I think I think he's he's been given the space he needs. But now he's got to deliver. And on on Wednesday night, if I'm setting Lumen field and he's coming forward to take a kick, I'll be on the edge of my sea. You're thinking, please get this. And if he misses that first one, Jeff, the stadium's going to be like the energy's going to suck it. It's going to be sucked out. So feel goal when it's nil nil or something of the seven nil down, three nil down, and he misses
his first kick. You're going to you're going to feel attention in the stadium. So I really hope he gets this right. I've been telling anybody who will listen that this is a guy who had a horrible final regular season gap against the Niners. And 133 could have been 23% something like that. What was a chip shot? And then and then he kicked eight out of eight in the playoffs with 11 out of 11 extra points. So he has been awful and then brilliant again. I hope that's going to happen again, but it's definitely some it's a story line, isn't it going into this game? Yeah, rapid fire on a scale of one to 10, 10 being we need to bring in another kicker. Where? What's your nerve level at right now? No, I think in a scale of 10, I think it's, I'm a one on that part. And I'll tell you why I'm a one is it's not so much because I've completely convinced that that my eyes is going to turn this around. Because I'm not. But what I am sure of is I don't want to be in a position like the Ravens, bring it up Jake Moody to your practice squad. Yeah, because
Tyler loop or whatever is called, which is it's a ridiculous name. It's not is not is not cutting it after he missed the kick of the season to end last season. And now and now you're looking at we've got this guy we're not sure about. And we've got Jake Moody is the alternative. Like that sounds horrible. I don't want to be in that position. There is a kicker in the draft. Well, if he's in the draft next year, there's a kickering college football called Lucas Canero from Ole Miss. Now if he has the kind of year that I think he's capable of, I'd be very interested in having a look there Jeff. Well, that's not he's not he's not coming in on a white horse in the next three weeks. He's he's going to be there in April maybe. Well, yeah. And me and you have been like going back and forth and some texts of just and Brian spending on some of those where we've just seen some of the draft prospects and you do way more work on the draft than I do. We've just seen one of the guys that I've been like wondering about was it would have been hard to replace Myers after last year, but I love the name Trace Mac. Like it was an unbelievable name.
And he's been unbelievable for the Packers in the preseason. He's hit like seven to seven kicks. So I'm like he went a couple picks after the C.O.X. took a manual Henderson who's on the practice squad. I don't know if he's anything more than just a gunner on special teams if he gets called up. But yeah, I've been one. But just back to the question in general, like, are there guys that you've seen? I know the preseason can be a liar. Like I've seen so many guys in the preseason flash. And then the season starts and then you just don't hear from them at all. Like we've seen on the C.O.X. for years, Troy main Pope, case and Williams, guys like that. But like, as any of the guys you've watched and you've just been like, what the hell, man? Like I kind of wish they did this draft differently or are you just pretty confident? No, I you and I and Brian have told about some of the players that have stood out in preseason and there were players that we liked. And that's that's always the frustrating thing, isn't it? I try not to watch as many of these players because it kills you because even if you come to a player in the last six weeks of a
process, Jeff, and you like, I mean, your pregnant on was somebody that we were talking about a lot. And if he goes on and has an amazing career, having dropped to like the late third or every end of drop in three, you're like, oh my, how did he fall? Like for me, it's a bit like a blue because I know we had the injury issues, but I still think, why did he last around three? That's insane. And he did. And there's one or two others. And I was actually not watching the Raiders to watch might watch it. But I was watching it to watch Fernando Mendoza, just I just interested to see him and I was was playing, but Washington's looked really good and the new sent me that quote where Cubiak said, or somebody said, Cubiak was like jumping on the table or something demanding. He was drafted because he's the perfect running back for the system. And I'm thinking we use that system. And it's funny because you were pushing Jonah Coleman, another guy with most Ceeox fans from UW would know really well and sounds like it's starting Denver's gone really well. And the question
I had just been having watching these cornerbacks come in left and right is I know they were this close to Chris Johnson, a guy that you would identify as ideal target Brady Henderson's that said on your show and later on ESPN.com, that was the guy they wanted. And then I haven't heard much about Colton Hood or some of the other course Cee says we've heard some good things at a green bay, but I just can't help but wonder. And again, prices of the guy that you liked and sounds like the reports on him have been really good. Like it sounds like the Ceeox are pretty high in him, certainly, but I still can't quite help but wonder if they should have done the opposite. And basically all your mock drafts in the third round had either Washington or Coleman going to them and you didn't even know if Washington was going to be there. He went in the fourth round. Do you think they should have done that back the other way knowing what we know? I think you make an argument for you know, Thursday morning, Jeff, we might be all even Wednesday evening. We might be sort of exchanging a what's up message going out at your doing price. Actually, he's actually pretty good. After he's run for 150 yards, but
you know, if that doesn't happen and if he has a bit of a slow start and if Jonah Coleman is even just playing it as a role for the for the Broncos or if Washington's doing a great job for the Raiders, you couldn't help but wonder what if what if what if you know, and there was some good players who were available at that pick. So there's always that chance to second guess it, but I do remember, you know, with price, the conversation I had quite early in the process where I was speaking to somebody who's far more qualified than I will ever be on these players. And without any prompting, I was basically just like the start of the conversation like, come on, then who do you like? And he was like, oh, you know, not not not love the other running back at no today, you know, like he's he's he's going to be this he could be better than love. Like he's this and he's that no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, without any prompting, it wasn't like me, hey, what do you think of Jadarian price? It was like, no, I'm going to bring this guy up first. And after I had that conversation, I was like, wow, like, I mean, I've known this individual for
a long time. And very rarely do they suddenly start gushing about a player right off the bat like this. And so it made me think, yeah, this is a guy who's clearly really liked by NFL types. And and the fact that John Schneider took him that early, you know, okay, so that that fits with with what I was hearing before. And and you're right, like, San Daniels come out and I don't know whether that's just QB building up his guy talk here. But it I'm interested. And if Jadarian price has a great year and is making big plays and looking excellent for the seals, we're not going to over think this at all. But as with Richard Penny, you know, he doesn't matter how talented you are sometimes, Jeff, it's sometimes just don't work out. And when running backs don't work out in the first round, it always kind of feels a little bit more like there's a bit more of a critique, critical eye looking at those picks. So if this doesn't work out, well, and if a cademat Donald
or whoever ends up working out one of these cornerbacks, you know, and a Chris Jones was off the ball, but I keep you if he had if he hadn't just about made it. And if Jonah Coleman and Mike Washington or whoever else is is top running back at that point, yeah, you definitely will ever think it a little bit. Yeah, it's tough because like the last few years have been boyied by these draft classes and already unfortunately they got bad news on Bud Clark. He's out for the season in the last season game. I thought a fluke injury like that sucked. Julian Neal again, bad luck, he's just been injured. And he was a guy that a lot of people works. I did a bad and then you're looking at both Stevens is a guy. He flashed a little bit in the last game, but me and Brian were debating and Brian had him off his roster in the 53. So I don't think they're going to have a great draft class here. Also seventh rounders are on the practice squad as we knew because you more than anyone talked about bad this depot in this draft. So a lot just comes down to price and fair or not, he's basically their entire draft class this year. And so it seems like all indications are the sea. You saw that scene in hard knocks where the defensive
guys are talking about them and they're going to be really good. So I want to ask you another guy, a guy you really are high on and I've seen some good and bad from him in the previous season, but he played a lot more than I would have thought. But I was kind of looking at Elijah Royo, Riley Mills to an extent as part of their draft classes here because they were really almost wrenchored players last year in a sense. Like how are you feeling because you were higher than me and I was very high on a Royal and you were higher than me. So how are you feeling about a royal going into the year? My opinion on Elijah Royo has not changed at all. Like he is somebody just, I think you've seen him preseason like there's just so much talent there. The frame, the quickness, the body control. Like if you get him into little 1v1 situations, he will put his body in the way of the defender and he's like a brick wall to get round sometimes and he catches it away from his body. He is somebody who I think there's never any guarantee it's going to work and you do see a
lot of these athletic titans come into the league with all this promise and they never do anything. But he is somebody who as a receiver at least could be unbelievable, could be like a proper, you know over the next two or three years could emerge as a top top player, it's position. Now the blocking side of things is funny because on the big run they got against the titans, everybody blocked well apart from Elijah Royo and you think, okay well that's obviously still an area where, and I think that's part of the reason why he's playing a lot in preseason. I don't think it's anything to do with his ability as a pass catcher. I think it's because they want to see him work harder in those situations and it's perhaps going to be a little bit of an issue for him if you can't block well. And I don't think that's ever going to be a huge strong point of his, but as a weapon it's just going to be so dynamic and although the Jake, you don't know if you want to see Jay Bobo get injured, right? That's a horrible whole thing. But part of me thinks can you use a Royo in the way that they would have used Jay Bobo? You know like I keep thinking
back to that third and ten that Bobo caught in one of the big games, it might have been against the Niners in the playoffs where I think he was in the slot and it was third and third and he's just a really basic sort of inside slam but got the match up, he wanted, you know the coverage attention goes to Jay Sen and other players. Can you put a Royo in that spot, getting run in that exact same route, getting you a third and ten conversion in a big game? That's the kind of thing where I think he could be really dominant this year. So excited about him and you know Mills, Mills had no business, has neither did Tory Horton at last and as long as they did, you know they're just two exceptional talents, like you just watched Tory Horton and they thought this is a receiver. Like I was watching a lot of the players of the last sort of three or four weeks and Coleman who's gone from Orban to Texas, Jeff, he's not the biggest or the fastest or anything like that but it just looks like a natural receiver. It's hard to sort of explain what I mean by that but he just watching when you think well he was born to play this position and that's Tory Horton
and Mills, I just fantastic. Like if he played a full season I know a lot of people now say I had been a second round pick and that's why I hadn't before the injury but it could have been a first round pick if he played a full year and been healthy and everything like you don't have many players who can blow up games from the interior and have his athletic profile so you know these are players that easily have the next couple of years could take a huge jump and if to do well that's scary for everybody else. Yeah because if you want to tell me last year at this time that Drake Thomas and Ty Okada would have really good seasons with the Seahawks, I would have looked at you like we were looking at Ben Solak and some of those guys at the end of the year. Like you mentioned some of the other breakout candidates there. Like is there anyone else that we might not be thinking about that might be another breakout candidate this year because again we are all very nervous about the linebacker depth last year and Drake Thomas just totally surpassed Ty Ries Knight and now Ty Ries Knight's living pretty good. Do you see any breakout guys other than the guys you just
mentioned? Well I think you could easily include near my approach in that. Yeah. It's a breakout candidate because he is somebody who is if we're being really honest, does look quite bad when he's been on the field and yeah you know you put players out on an NFL field for long enough they'll make the odd good play but by and large not a trustworthy cornerback and then you watch him in preseason you're like who made that play? I was pretty, that's pretty, that's pretty, it's number isn't it? Yeah yeah it is. You know and you keep noticing that during preseason and they've got a great defensive back coach, they've got a great defensive coordinator because he's English and they've got a great defensive minded head coach and they seem to have done a good job, you know like you say with Ty Ries Knight Carter and Drake Thomas and others, Josh Joe, they've really developed these players and brought them along, can they do it with near my approach? I'd love to think so, Jeff but if it's not pretty can it be a Julian Neal when he gets healthy? Can it be a Trevon Diggs
coming back to health? Can it be Terry and Arnold if you know if when we ever see him on the field? Like it's plausible, I'd completely back them, I mean that's the one I'm kind of most interested in its Arnold, like can you get Arnold on the field? Like I'm just waiting Jeff, maybe I'm just being, it's just hope, hope you on my behalf. I don't see how all these NFL teams were like taking him on a tour of the country and by accounts the reports in the last week was then more wanted to have him in for a visit but they kind of just took a step back because the negativity around it which I didn't think was that strong actually. There wasn't like a swelling of protest about visiting the Giants or the Seagulls so I was a bit surprised by that but why were so many teams interested? Is it because they're all here in the same thing? I just wonder if, because this is what his agent and his lawyer has said, there isn't any evidence, there's not enough evidence there to charge him and I wonder if we're getting to a point here Jeff where eventually they'll have
to say we're dropping everything because whether we did it or not, if there's not enough evidence to prove that he did, why would you get to call it with it? What's your evidence for this? We don't have any. Yeah, go ahead. So eventually you just wonder if it's going to get dropped and then what does the NFL do? Because if the charges are dropped and it's not the evidence there, what does the NFL say there's enough evidence to suspect that he might have been involved and therefore we're going to give you a punishment but how big can that punishment be if he's actually not been charged with anything in the end if the charges are dropped? So could it be that it's a token gesture, suspension and he actually plays a decent chunk of the season? I wonder if that's going to happen, you know, and if it does, I'd back the sea oaks to turn him into a play, you know. So I'm curious, I haven't had you, I haven't chat with him about this really. Were you a fan his draft year? Where were you on him? That was the Byron Murphy draft, right? They even mentioned
Arnold and Quinnian Mitchell that night. John's randomly shouted them out and they never sang around pick that year. So were you were you pretty high on him? Yes. I wanted them to go in a different position to look at different positions because I felt like, you know, they needed pass rushers, they needed defensive linemen, they needed defensive linemen. I wanted them to go in that direction rather than, you know, for me it was like another cornerback, you've just drafted one in the fifth overall pick, right? Yeah. You know, again, so I wasn't excited about that. When that, I mean, it was like Daniel Jeremiah and maybe Dame Brueger and people were something like speculating that the seal liked cornerbacks. It was like, there's no smoke without fire here. And then John pretty much confirmed it, didn't it? Like, he's saying his press conference afterwards. There was something in that. Maybe John had been at a one to many beers in Dino's or something and let it slip. I don't know. By the way, he sunk that beer quicker than the other two guys in there on the hard knocks. The other beer, that beer was like going pretty quick on the first sip, a quarter of it had gone in the next scene, the beer had gone. My beer was taken away from
hard knocks. It's like, I need to have a beer with John Schneider at some point because he drops like the movie lines that I love, like left and right. The other guys on my show don't know what they'll tell him time after time when I'm like talking about like, we're Austin Powers references or like, stuff from Seinfeld or all these kinds of things. So, but yeah, I was, John's been pretty impressive. That's my down a beer on that show. I mean, John, I'm John Beagrey guys, I'm a beer with. But I think all the things you could find out, Jeff, about the draft and players, if he's out of few. So, what were we talking about? Oh, you're a terminor Arnold. So, on my board, I had Quinney Mitchell in a tier on his own because he was a complete pakite, an amazing senior ball, he was so quick at the combine, physical, everything you wanted really. And then I had Arnold in the tier below and then it was that the guy who ended up in Houston, Lassiter, Marielaster. Quinney Lassiter, yeah. And I remember there's another cornerback, oh, Nate Wiggins, we're like, Clubs together behind Arnold. So, they were the four. And
I did like Arnold and I can remember, this is the funny thing is I remember everybody talking about his character. I don't know why this is stuck in my head, but during the draft, you know, the combine Mike Floreo and Chris Sims do all the interviews, don't they, with the players on the stage. And in the middle of all of that, I remember them talking to each other and Floreo just saying, I just want to say, I really enjoyed speaking to Terry and Arnold and that guy is going to go far because I can just take personalities amazing and we really enjoyed talking to him and all of this. And it just stuck with me that. And then the more more you heard is people just praising his character all the time and saying what a great guy he was. And that's what, you know, because at that point, I was very much on the seal, it was going to draft, you know, I had been sort of very vocal at the work and a draft J then Carter because of the character. And once that got proven right, I was like thinking, I'm going to double down on this now so they're looking for great characters and all I hear is, Arnold's got a great character. Arnold's got a great character. I'm thinking he's a CEO. He's a CEO. He's type. And I think that's
that stuck with them. I think they probably had a very high character grade on the guy. And and then this strange thing has happened. It's just a horrible story really, but yeah, like he I don't know. I don't even know if I don't know what to believe, Jeff. And like, I don't want to speculate as to whether he did or didn't do it. And you can never tell that some people are very good at faking who they are sometimes. And maybe that's him. I don't know. But I kind of quite hard to believe that somebody praised as much as he was and they lead up to the draft freeze character would then be in the central figuring what's been reported happened. Yeah, it was hard to believe. And when I read this story, like, I don't want to get, I don't want to see a clip there or the sleeve. I like, I understand being wanting revenge and anger when someone apparently robs you for that much money, but there's obviously a better way to handle it. And I think there's more to the story than we know. But yeah, like when Nick Saban swears off on a guy and Jalen Milrose, you could question a lot of things about his play, but I think his character, those two were best friends at Obama. And they have Carl Scott in the building. And it's easy to see why
they're still high on the guy. And look, I'm pretty sure that the Ceeox didn't think by Ramurfie was going to fall to them at that draft spot. And I think they were pretty prepared to move down. They never second round picked that year. If you remember and take one of those corners. And so they might have drafted Arnold and we've had quandary digs on our channel. Brian has them on as a regular guest. I haven't spoken to him yet, but quandary had some interesting theories of why things didn't go so well. The defense he was in and Detroit didn't have because if you look at like the stats and those charts, like one of our commenters is always saying like his numbers were terrible in Detroit last year. He was like a bottom 10 corner in a lot of metrics. But he never know. Like Josh Joe was terrible in Philadelphia. Like terrible, unplayable, caught him. I have buddies who are Eagles fans who are like when they saw Josh Joe playing for the Ceeox in 2024, they were laughing. And like what the Mike's done with them. And we've seen Mike do this the same guys in Baltimore. So I am just curious. Like Arnold digs or any of those guys like are you with more excited about any of those guys specifically or is it just let's let's see. Pritchett is young and he's like, yeah, I think Arnold that I am excited to see Arnold.
I want the situation to have some clarity. So we know whether we're going to see him anytime soon or not. I am I am interested by it. And that's not just because he's a former first round pick like some might think it's you know, I liked him before the draft. I think you're absolutely right that sometimes you know, you could argue that Leonard Williams wasn't very good with the jets. But then he's just a different systems. And he's become who he's become. Yeah, some Donald struggle with the jets now as a Super champion. Like you never said watching some Donald the jets. Well, that guy's going to be a Super champion one day, which is the situation he was in. And Arnold obviously it's a bit different like the Detroit lands not toxic place or anything like the jets is. But you know, if the scheme's not right, the scheme's not right. You know, that's more for them for drafting a player who didn't fit the scheme, frankly. So I am excited by that. I think with the digs thing, it's a complete shot in the dark, isn't it? And Carl Scott obviously knows him from the other Bama days. And that's probably why he's there. And Carl Scott's probably saying I can get this guy. 30 was with him in Dallas. Yeah, yeah.
We can get him going again. We can get it. We can have a go at this guy. And if you don't work out, Jeff, it's cost you a hand sandwich. So, you know, why not? So I think with him, it's not so much about a level of excitement as opposed to, hey, let's see how it goes. And we've preached it. I'm just really hope that he has been able to take a step because that's my biggest fear, I think, for this game coming up is that I'm not, I don't think AJ Browns as good as he used to be. Whether he's going to be worth the first round pick they've given up for him, the Patriots, I'm not sure. I hope that the C-OX defense is basically squashing Drake Maylight. They did in the Super Bowl so that he can't have much time to get the ball down and feel. But if there is a matchup that maybe worries me, is that Brown, again, is potentially Patriots or Joe, the Coby and issue? Yeah, I want to, we've been on, I got to hit the road pretty soon. So a couple more questions for you Rob, you've been very generous your time. But college football season started going,
I know you put out a big article in your site. And when you're studying the class at this point, like, first I want to talk about your article, but one of the things you're looking for right now is it's C-OX focused. Like, I got to study the defensive ends. Is it learning the whole class, learning how to do your board? And yeah, talk about the article that you wrote on your site, that you're, or the article that stuff you're working on. Yeah, so it's a 5,000 word. So I hope that doesn't point anybody off. It's, you know, I keep, I always find it weird. I don't actually set out to write articles that long. And then I see the word count at the end and think, bloody hell, my dissertation at university was 10,000 words. I can, it told me ages. But it's just when you get going and you start writing and I've got all my notes from the players that I've been studying, it gets out there. And what I tried to do at this time is just to get an overall feel for who's out there. Because often what happens, Jeff, is the players that you end up liking the most are ones that you don't set out to watch. They're, you're watching a game and a player just leaps off the screen and you go, who's that? Is he draft eligible? Oh, he is. You know, and
then you, and then you study him a bit more, you end up liking who they are. So it's, I'm not directly looking for CEO's players at the moment. I just want to get a feel for the class. And my sort of aim with this piece was to sort of give you my take on it because everybody's got the take. I do have to say this, Jeff, and I'm not casting the spursions at anybody here, but I feel as if the draft has become too much of a business now. And draft coverage is too much of a, it's a big business. And you, I think a lot of people who cover the draft are almost salesmen. And who wants a salesman trying to sell you a car going the cars crap. It's probably only got six months. One of the wheels is loose. No one wants to hear that. You ain't buying the car. If you can't say it's a brilliant sports car can do this. It's got the best air gone best sound system people buy into it. And with a draft, no one wants to hear this is the worst draft class I've seen in years, which he was, which he, it was last year. So they find ways to to talk up the draft. So
what people will have heard about this draft class is some people saying it might be the best ever. And I want us to know what's the reality of it. And what I would say, Jeff, is it's a very deep draft. It is a very, it is a, it's a deep draft. So you're going to get good players well into day two and at the start of day three, it's not going to be like last year where you basically took a priority free agents in round four and five. You know, you are, you are going to have some really decent players available to thick looking draft. You also have what I would say a legit good blue chip type players at the top end. And I wrote about some of them, except, you know, the obvious ones are Jeremiah Smith at the top, the receiver at Ohio State and then Leonard Moore, the cornerback at Notre Dame, I think are just, you know, top five players in any class. But then you've got a whole bunch of players who could get into that range to if they take another step, you know, people like Will Eccles, the defensive tackle that Ole Miss, I think,
is very good. Just in Scott, very impressive defensive tackle from Miami. There's a linebacker called Kingston Villamu Asa for Notre Dame, who is, I think, the best linebacker I've watched in years, like he's just so, it's just perfect. Read the piece. He's just an excellent player. Simmons ensued at the two pass rushes at Texas and South Carolina respectively, very, very good. And then Coleman who I mentioned and even, you know, there's, you can remember Ryan Williams, who's now called Ryan Coleman Williams, he's got a double bow on name now, Alabama, the guy who kind of burst onto the scene. And he had a bit of a cramp year last year, dropped ten passes and got in the doghouse at Alabama. And I went back and watched him, Jeff, and he's such a, it's such a good, it's just such a natural player. You just need to get himself back on track. So you've got players like that who could legitimately be top 10 picks if they could get back on track. And if not, maybe you take a chance and a player like that, if they last
a bit longer because the talents there. So you've got a whole bunch of these guys. And then you've got, you know, you've got a Kade Piper, a brilliant Iowa offensive like, we know we're like an Iowa offensive lineman. I think he's fantastic. Could play center or guard. I think you've got some underrated players. And then the final thing I would say about this class, Jeff, is the one thing that people keep talking about is the quarterbacks. And that's where I disagree with the mainstream media. I think I don't think Archmaning would be a first round prospect if his name was Archmith. Like his, the name on the back of his jersey is what's getting him people talking about. He's not a first round prospect based on what we've seen so far. I might turn into one this year, but he's not a first round player based on his tape through two years of starting at Texas or one yet one in a bit years, starting at Texas. He's not. He's got a long way to go. I don't think he's going to declare after this season person. I think he's got so far to go. I think you'll stay another year. Don't say more. I think it's got a boring quarterback to watch. I don't think he's, I don't think he's this, you know, people are number one overall pick. Fantastic. I've no doubt he may well go that
early, but I don't watch him and think I'm watching a star quarterback here. I feel like I'm watching somebody who has got the tools, but he plays in a really user friendly offense. And you'll hear your reminds me of Joey Harrington. Remember him. Yeah, I do. I think he reminds me of, you know, there's quite a few quarterbacks. We ended up going early and then after would you go, oh, how did they go that early? And I kind of think there's he could be one of those. And yet the consensus seems to be really excited by him. And you know, the, yeah, the Norris Sellers Jeff at times doesn't look like a, doesn't look like you can play quarterback in college. And yet he gets taught about in the first round. He's got the tools, but he needs to put it all together. I had a crap over line last year. Play callers now are Art Briles of Suns gone in there to try and play the rubber griffin offense with him. So we'll see how it goes. And it's funny because do you remember Nico? I am a lever. I am a lava. Yeah, I was at Tennessee and he went to UCLA. I watched him and I watched him and I was really surprised by how much I liked him. Like he's, he's got everything that you're one. I just think he's a bit of an arse, Jeff. And you know,
the way that he left Tennessee, and I watched his interviews and I just thought I'm not warming to this guy. And I'm not sure that teams are going to necessarily go, yeah, you've got the talent. We believe in you to lead to be our leader, to be our man in the huddle. It was composed. Just going to do this. I don't know about that. I got the talent, but I'm not sure. And also it's UCLA. I've got a talent there supporting cast. It's a new coaching set. It was going from James Madison. I'm not sure. So I don't think this quarterback class is deep. There's a lot of names, but I don't think it's as good as some people are suggesting, which makes me really want some talent of the great year so that we can just be nice and comfortable with him as our starter. Yeah, it's, it's really fun for me to get to like learn the draft class. I have a process. I love reading your stuff because honestly, when the NFL starts, I go full NFL. I'll watch college football here and there. And then once I move into the offseason mode, I go like heavy into the draft and reading about your stuff all years, how I learned a lot of these guys,
I read Dame Bruegler, I read, I listen to some podcasts now and again, but on my show and as we go forward, it's going to be pure NFL, but maybe maybe we'll talk college football during the year, depending on how the year goes. And if the CXR was good as they were last year, I'm probably not going to be looking at the draft, but with, I think they have 11 picks now that they made that trade for the corner. I'm excited to see a really good draft class again. Can you, can you do me a favor when you're doing your Twitter cop routine? Yes, I want you to promise that at some point between now and April, you will at least mention at least one thing that Tom McShay, so I like Tom McShay. I really do. I like Steve mentioned it's a very, it's an entertaining show, but Todd is already like going way over the top on every player that he's talking about. And it's crazy. And the things that he says and you just, you'll say one thing now and then he'll say the total opposite, the following week or like he hears something from a source. And then he completely, you turns on it
three weeks later. And I find that I know you and I have talked about how amusing that got in the last draft. I think it needs to, it needs a Twitter cop appearance at some point between now and April. That's funny. I kind of did one with Brian and before it became like a national story where he, what he did with the number two pick last year with Bailey and Arvel Reese. And I think Brian had no idea what I was talking about. Like I was very fed up by it. He like didn't hit it all. And then once it became a story, I think it became, but full disclosure, during the pandemic, when I was not working my, my, my job shut down at the time. I was self-employed and I'm still getting paid, but everything shut down. I got really into draft gambling. And there was nothing going on in the world. So me and my brother were kind of living together at the time. And we just found all these weird odds that didn't make any sense. And like we made pretty good money. And then as the years have gone on, draft gambling has like taken off. And it's one of
the, I don't gamble at all during the season really. But the draft that I've always find is just miss. There's no inside information. I like last year I made a lot of money on David Bailey, things like that. Two years ago, this one, McShay started that podcast on the ringer. And I love, his super entertaining, super convincing. He cost me a lot of money because he would just get really excited about something he heard, talk about it. I would look the odds were good. I'd make a bet. And then like a week later, he would totally change his opinion. And I was like, dude, you just convinced me to make that like you saw me on that. And then he did it again. I, I made money every year, except for that one year. I think it was 2024 draft. And it was 2025 draft, the year they got stable. And I lost a lot. I lost most of my bets. And so I had a grudge against McShay. And then coming into this year, then he was way worse this year in terms of the stuff he was doing. He was changing his things every day. And so I became fascinated by it because
it was just so reckless and so out there. But yeah, we were sponsored by PricePix on Bryan Show. And people doing their draft gambling. So it doesn't realize like that stuff impacts people. And people are looking for edges. And I think he's one of these guys that he does talk to a lot of people. Or either he gets used to like spread things or he gets used for misinformation. Or he just gets too excited. Like Peter Shreger does it sometimes and doesn't realize what he's saying. And I just hope he gets a little better with that. But yeah, he's super like Steve mentioned him or really entertaining. I do like their show a lot. But I do have that grudge from two years ago. The thing is he clearly does have the air of some exceptional sources. And he does get stuff right. But the problem is Jeff is that like at one point he said, Tyson's into the Rams very early in the process, very, very early. But then if he did just left it at that, he did look like a genius. Like, are you, you're the ultimate draft insider? But he then next two weeks later,
that's not happening now. And then a couple of weeks later, I'm hearing it again. And then two weeks later, no, no, no, I don't think he's going to go in the first round. And then I know, you know, and it's just it was that all the time, not just on Tyson's and not just on David Baleo, R. Vell Reese, not just there were so many things whereby he'd hear one thing, couldn't resist saying it. And then the following week would get different information. And it felt like he was chasing his own tail constantly. Like he wanted to be right on everything. So would say everything that he hears. And it just ended up a jumbled mess. And what he really should, who am I to give Todd McShay advice? But I mean, I suppose I've been a broadcaster for 20 years now. So I suppose maybe I am okay to say this is that it's okay sometimes not just, you know, to have some information and keep it yourself for a bit. And then by the time put a game plan together and then reveal stuff in a more considered way, because in the end, you just started calling people scumbags all the time for doubting his sources. I mean, he was he was using the word scumbags
about eight times a show because people were giving him crap during the show. He was in on social media for flip-flopping all the time. But I kind of felt like Sam, well, you've brought that on yourself, Todd. So I don't know, but it's still a very entertaining show and at Steve's grave. And Todd is great. And you know, for a bit of a draft geek, well, not a bit of a draft geek, a lot of a draft geek like me, when I'm in a card, I mean, Jeff, I'm going to three hour drive to London on Saturday. I'll probably stick his show on and not feel an hour. Yeah, there's a difference between entertaining and being good. But yeah, that was the problem with me. It was just like there was one point last year where he was just like, I love Gabi, yakis, the defensive end. And like, he was his guy. He was like promoting him in public. He was starting it buzz. Then he put out like a top 100 list the next day. And he was like 57. What? Which one is it? You can't just say both of those. So yeah, before we wrap up here, and I'm always happy to talk about McShay or Twitter cops, I'm so superstitious about football and
the C.OX in general. I feel a little less superstitious this year, but just in general, like, I got asked to write an article once when I was a writer during the 2013. I don't want to write it because I thought I was going to jinx their season. And I actually did write the article. And I actually got to speak to some pretty cool people in the organization. But do you have a super bowl pick right now? Like, if you don't want to do it, you can veto because I feel uncomfortable even doing it. Do you have a super bowl pick right now? Yeah, well, I got asked by the BBC website to give a prediction for a few things like who I thought would be the super ball and MVP and rookie of the year instead of like this. And I, you know, I wrote in my prediction that I thought, I can't what did I say for the AFC? I comment what I said for the AFC. But I said that I thought it would be the right, it would come down to the Rams and the C.OX again. If they stayed relatively healthy, then I think it would come down to those two teams. And then I didn't give a team to actually win through out of those parry. So the guy wrote it sent me an email back saying,
yeah, but who have you got winning the game? And that's where I got a little bit superstitious. And because I cover the C.OX, I don't want to seem like a Homer. And I also don't want to jinx anything. So I picked the Rams. Now, if you want to say, if you would say to me, who do I think it's going to be the super bowl? That, you know, I think if you're going to use your head, you would say you have to position them as the favorites right now. But I don't know, I think the C.OX could just as easily be this. I think it's going to come down to one of those two. So it's you know, some C.OX fans will not not enjoy me saying that. And I'm sure it will get a round of applause for said, I think the C.OX could win the Super Bowl again. It's really hard to go back to back. I think they definitely can do it. I don't know if they will. I think the Rams could definitely do it. I don't know if they will. But they're the two for me. It comes down to those two teams. I think if it plays out as I expect that could be easily the NFC championship game again. Yeah, I kind of want to say that like the Texans in the NFC, but like everyone's going to pick the
Texans and kind of think of a different angle. I'll have to come up with it. I'll put it on. I'll try to put it on my show for next week once even the C.OX playing New England. But yeah, we've been on for 90 minutes. I've probably got a head up Rob. I appreciate you coming on last minute making this much time for me. I'm sure I'm going to be on your channel during the season. I hope we can do the Monday thing again. But so that's up to you and how the season goes. Oh, definitely if you're if you're down for it, let's do it. No, no, I love talking about the games that you every week. So yeah, I will have back and forth like a home and home thing on my show and we'll figure that out. But yeah, Rob, always a pleasure. Like I think our numbers right on this show. I can see our like phenomenal people have having you on. You guys are killing it on the collective show that you and Brian are doing with Annabelle and sure they'll be a new person eventually soon. But yeah, thanks again for joining and sure we're going to be talking a ton and have a safe light to Seattle and have a great time at the game. Yeah, thank you. And if anybody sees the toll English, oh, I got one more thing. I forgot to this until now. I was eating these today.
Oh, wow, the mini eggs. Okay, I don't know if the American guys know what these are, but like these are huge. I remember I randomly remembered you said this and I put this in my desk. But I put these in popcorn. The other name is pretty good. They are unbelievable. Yeah, they are they are extremely addictive. But what I was going to say is if anybody if anybody sees the toll English guy wandering around Seattle the next few days, feel free to come and say hello. I do I love meeting people who read the blog. So if you do feel free to come and say hi. Yeah, it killed me. I can't be there this week. We just moved. So it's a little chaotic in my world. But Brian had mentioned before I wrap up that we might be doing a live show in Las Vegas. And I wasn't sure I was going to try to go to that game. But if Brian puts together a live show in Las Vegas, I'm going to have to do everything I can to make it out their way. Oh, yeah. Yeah, so keep your ears out for that. Brian had mentioned that on the show last night. If we can do that, let's try to get as many of you can. So we did great. We did one in Tennessee in Nashville last year. I'm not so many cool people in it. We met. We had people coming up to us. If our Nike guy
is listening to us, me and Braub met a guy from study work for Nike. Oh, yeah. We never heard from you. I'm still waiting for this Nike hookup. So if you're out there, send us some Nike stuff. I'm just kidding. But anyway, thanks again, Rob. I'm sure the show will go up soon. But have a great day. And let's let's have let's talk about a win next week. Let's do. All right. Thank you all for joining another Jeff Simmons show. Hope you enjoyed the new technology. And by next week, maybe this week will be set up properly and I'll be upstairs.
