Jes Staley And The Transcripts From His Epstein Related Trip To Congress (Part 17) (9/9/26)
About this episode
The committee also pressed Staley on some of the strangest and most troubling material in his correspondence with Epstein, including the notorious “Snow White” emails and other references to Disney characters. Staley denied having sex with a woman dressed as Snow White and said he could not explain the meaning of some of the messages, even when investigators confronted him with contemporaneous emails and photographs. He maintained that he did not know Epstein was continuing to abuse girls after his 2008 conviction, calling that revelation “incredible,” yet the transcripts also showed that Staley personally argued for JPMorgan to keep Epstein as a client even as internal concerns about Epstein’s cash withdrawals and potential trafficking activity were mounting. Staley also said he had spoken with Jamie Dimon about Epstein, something Dimon and JPMorgan have disputed. Taken together, the testimony painted a picture of a relationship that was far closer, more intertwined with Staley’s professional life and more difficult to reconcile with his earlier descriptions than he had previously acknowledged.

What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the Epstein Chronicles. In this episode we're picking up where we left off with the Jess Staley transcript from his trip to Congress. Question, if you're looking at the bottom of each page on page 6, there's an updated date, January 27, 2011, that says quote, a few news stories during 2010, connect Jeffrey Epstein to Human, Sullivan jumps in, the lawyer, I want to make sure we know what we're reading, sorry, redacted if you look at the numbers at the bottom of the page, flip to page 6, a little further down than halfway down the page. Sullivan, okay, thank you, summary of findings. Question, it says quote, a few news stories during 2010, connect to Jeffrey Epstein to Human Trafficking, the coverage team, along with Catherine Keating and William Langford all met to discuss the situation and agreed to enhance monitoring and document discussion with the client. Jess Staley discussed the topic with Jeffrey Epstein, who replied that there was no truth to the
allegations, no evidence, and was not expecting any problems. We'll continue to monitor the accounts and usage closely going forward. Answer is at the same date where I said he was shaken, answer no, this is 11. Question, so the outcome of the meeting with Ms Keating, Emma's Langford, which I understood, that you do not recall, but that they are clearly, at least Mr Langford, is emailing about the outcome of this meeting appears to be that you would simply talk to Mr Epstein. Do you remember whose idea that was? Answer no. Question, do you remember why the idea was for you to talk to Mr Epstein, and not someone in risk or compliance or legal or even someone at the private bank? Answer again by this time, I think the decision was ultimately in the hands of Steve Colour, and you know the bank, you know Langford and Catherine, and what not are doing their reviews, and I was in another part of the bank, so question if the decision was in the hands. So he gets cut off now by Mr Sullivan, please let him finish, I'm sorry,
for that did excuse me Mr Sullivan, Mr Sullivan, please let him finish. Staley, so confusing the issue of me talking with Epstein about the accusations against him, is not the same thing as the decision by the bank to keep him as a bank incline only. I think you're pushing the two together. Question, I don't think I am. The document says, just Staley discussed the topic with Jeffrey Epstein, so whatever role you say Mr Cutler had isn't relevant to what I'm asking right now. I'm asking why the idea was for you to talk to Mr Epstein, as it says you did, and instead of someone even put Mr Cutler aside, but instead of someone in a risk or compliance or out the private bank, because as you've pointed out multiple times, Staley interrupts them, they may have the person asking questions, please don't interrupt me, as you've pointed out multiple times, you were CEO of the investment banking division, so why are you asking Mr Epstein about these allegations? Answer because I knew Epstein,
and I was asking about the allegations, but that's separate, issue from the activities of the private bank, and what they should do with Epstein, questions so as they are reviewing his accounts, they're pulling you in because of your friendship with Mr Epstein, and asking you to talk to Mr Epstein about the allegations against him, answer again, and also in the document we've talked about Steve Cutler, basically controlling the decision of whether we keep Mr Epstein as a client. He also had talked, also talked about that Epstein had, you know, relations with other employees of JP Morgan, not just me. Question, I understand that. I'm not sure it answers my question, setting aside who, as the authority to terminate a client relationship with Mr Epstein, is it your testimony today? That the reason that you're talking to Mr Epstein about the allegations against him and the context is because he was your friend, and so your colleagues at JP Morgan, who are tracking the issues with his accounts, are going to you and saying, please talk to him about the allegations against him. I'm trying to understand why it's you,
who is talking to him, instead of people, and other relevant divisions at JP Morgan. Answer, I think he was talking to other people at JP Morgan, question maybe, but that's not what the document says, the document says Jess Staley discuss the topic with Jeffrey Epstein. Answer, you are saying, why is it you, as opposed to other people at Morgan, and I'm saying, I don't think it's as opposed to other people at Morgan. I think other people at Morgan had direct contact with him as well. Question, do you remember that? Other people at JP Morgan going to Mr. Epstein and asking him about the allegations? Answer, yes, question who? Answer, Mary Eardos. Question anyone else? Answer, I believe Justin Nelson. And then Steve Cutler, I think, had conversations with Epstein's lawyers. I'm not sure whether the other lawyers were involved. Question, if these other people were talking to Mr. Epstein about the allegations against him, why do you think they are not mentioned in documents with the frequency that you are? Answer again, I didn't write the documents. Question, do you remember talking to Mr. Epstein
about the allegations against him? The conversations that's referenced here? Answer, I remember the one conversation I had with him when I said he was very shaken, and I think that was before this, but I don't know how the dates line up. Question, well, this update is from January of 2011, so presumably it would have been in that month or close to it. Answer, and the date on my saying, he was shaken was what? Question, I believe it was 2006. Answer so long before, okay, question. So you have no recollection of the conversation that this document indicates you had with Mr. Epstein in 2011 about the allegations against him? Answer, no, I don't. Question, and you have no recollection of whose idea it was to have you have this conversation with Mr. Epstein? Answer again, I wasn't a completely different part of the bank, I don't. Question, do you think that it made sense to ask a potential sex trafficker if he was engaging in sex trafficking? Answer, ask the question again, question. Do you think that it made sense to ask
a potential sex trafficker if he was engaging in sex trafficking as a form of due diligence? Answer, it makes sense. Question, you testified that in 2010, you knew that Mr. Epstein had lied to you. Answer, yes, question. So if you knew that he lied to you in 2010, why would it make sense to go to him in 2011 and ask him if he was engaging in sex trafficking? Answer again, the issue was 2006. We learned what he did. He pled guilty. He went to jail. He served his time. It was inconceivable to me that he would continue his sex trafficking after spending a year in jail, year on work release, you know, it didn't make sense to me. Question, so even though you knew that he lied to you, in 2006, you learned in 2010 that he lied to you in 2006. Even then, you thought it was inconceivable that he might lie to you again. And so having him go to him and ask him if he's engaging in sex trafficking is an adequate form of due diligence? Answer, an adequate form of due diligence would be the private bank engaging with him
and doing its due diligence. That's the proper form of due diligence. Question, I would like to introduce as minority exhibit W in email exchange between you and Mr. Epstein dated March 20th 2011. The bait's number is EFTA00906898. In the first email, Mr. Epstein writes quote, I'm working on getting Steve Cutler the comfort he needs to which you respond quote agree? Was Mr. Cutler concerned about something related to Mr. Epstein? Answer, I think Steve Cutler had the ultimate decision as to whether we keep Epstein as a client. Also, I think around this time, Epstein hired a legal team and I think the legal team was being set up to meet with Cutler. Question, is that what Mr. Epstein was doing to get Mr. Cutler the quote comfort he needs? Answer, I think so. Question, I would like to introduce as minority exhibit X in email chain with you, Mr. Cutler, Ms. Erdos, James Conjron, and Nina Shanker dated July 19th 2011. A few months after Mr. Epstein told
you that he was working to get Mr. Cutler the comfort he needed. Question, in the most recent email, so at the top of the page, Mr. Cutler writes of Mr. Epstein quote, this is not an honorable person in any way. He should not be a client. So you have said multiple times today that Mr. Cutler had the authority to terminate a client relationship, correct? Answer, yes. Question, if Mr. Cutler had that authority, why didn't he use it? Answer, I don't know. Question, did you ever exert influence over Mr. Cutler to keep Mr. Epstein as a client? Answer, no. Question, you left JP Morgan in early 2013, correct? Answer, correct. Question, and then JP Morgan terminated its relationship with Mr. Epstein in the summer. And fall of that year, correct? Answer, yes. Question, why do you think JP Morgan only removed Mr. Epstein as a client once you left the bank? Answer, I don't know. Question, do you think those two things are connected? Answer, no. Question, would you agree that Mr. Epstein had a vast network of people that was connected to an industry, including finance, politics,
entertainment, and academia? Answer, yes. Question, would you agree that Mr. Epstein frequently leveraged those connections to broker meetings, share business intelligence and trade favors? Answer, I'm not sure I'd say trade favors? Question, sure. Would you agree that Mr. Epstein frequently leveraged these connections to broker meetings and share business, share business intelligence? Answer, I think he brokered meetings with his network because of what he knew and his influence. Question, any shared business intelligence? Would you agree with that? Answer, I'm not quite sure what you mean, business intelligence, but you know views about business or what not, yes. But if the implication is that he was using it to pass on non-public information, no. Question, you don't think he passed on non-public information? Answer, not that I'm aware of. Question, would you agree that Mr. Epstein uses vast network of people and the connections that he had to stay not just relevant, but powerful despite being, excuse me, despite being a convicted sex offender? Answer, I think he kept a network that gave him a certain aura. I'm not sure I'd characterize it as power.
I don't think he had power over anybody. Question, your attorney argued before the financial conduct authority of that quote, Mr. Epstein traded and influenced and relied on his network for legitimacy. Would you agree with that statement? Answer, yes. Question, did you ever share confidential information about JP Morgan with Jeffrey Epstein? Answer, yes. Question, did you ever share other confidential information with Epstein? So not necessarily related to JP Morgan? Answer, no. Question, and you previously, you are not aware of Mr. Epstein sharing your trading on information generally? Answer, that's correct. Question, so presumably, you're not aware of Mr. Epstein sharing your trading on information that you gave him? Answer, correct. All right folks, we're going to wrap up right here and in the next episode dealing with the topic we're going to pick up with, question I would like to introduce as minority exhibit Y in email exchange.
