On today's show, the East Playoff race is getting more ridiculous by the day.
One of the NHL's brightest stars is out for the regular season and are three stars of
the week.
You're locked on NHL, your daily podcast on the National Hockey League.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team, every day.
Welcome to this March 18th edition of the Locked On NHL podcast.
I'm Ross Levittan from Locked On Senators alongside Mike de Stefano from Locked On Maple Leafs.
These episodes brought to you by Fandall.
Fandall is giving you a way to turn your energy into even bigger potential wins with a basketball
of college.
Parlay Profit Boost had to Fandall.com to get started.
Mikey, it's Battle of Ontario week, buddy.
Certainly doesn't have the same teeth as it did earlier on in the season, though.
No, no, no.
I got this point.
You know, we got one team playing for something, but you know, I've said this so many times
to you, Ross over the years.
It's time for you to say it for me or I could say it about you, however you want to look
at it.
Beating Ottawa, I'm keeping the amount of the playoffs would almost be like winning
the Stanley Cup this year for the Maple Leafs.
That's the pride.
That's what they'll be playing for.
Taking points away from Ottawa this weekend is what couldn't motivate Toronto to get
a win.
I will say, Leaf Station does not want that to happen.
Leaf Station would love for them to lose out every single game, but they got embarrassed
by Ottawa a couple of weeks ago.
I think they'll play a lot better to have them playing a lot better since the Austin
Matthews incident.
And I expected to be a closer game.
We'll say that.
A tighter game than we saw a couple of weeks ago here.
I did notice our good friends over a game time.
I've seen some price drops that we know that Habs fans, Leaf fans, they invade the CTC
for a number of reasons that are beyond our control.
Outside force is trying to disrupt our hockey club, but I don't know if there's going
to be as much blues there typically is between these two teams.
Yeah, probably not.
Probably not.
They always play around St. Paddy's Day.
That's a dangerous combination at the CTC.
St. Paddy's Day and Sands fans and Leaf fans in the same barn.
Yeah, that's true.
I've been to a few of them, but it's always a, let's put this hostile environment to
say at least take part in any St. Paddy's festivities yesterday.
No, we called it St. Pilsie's Day.
It's my co-host Pilsie's birthday on St. Paddy's Day.
St. Pilsie's.
We had a blast in Ottawa over the weekend, though, got to see the Sands beat Anaheim
and San Jose.
Dude, those are two teams that are going to be good.
We're sitting pretty close for that Anaheim game.
My biggest takeaway outside of Ottawa and things obviously watching them all the time.
We talked about those locked on Sands, but more nationally, my hot take might be the
Beckett Seneca is going to make the 2030 Olympic team.
That kid can go like that kid.
He's so big.
He's so much bigger than I thought he would be.
He's 20 years old.
You're expecting a little bit of Bambi out there.
He's strong on his skates, dude.
He's a hell of a hockey player.
They got some good talent over there in Anaheim and it's starting to really come together.
They got a good coach, obviously, in Joel Kwenville, so I am excited about Anaheim's
future.
In terms of the teams that are ready to maybe take that next step, I think that in the
West specifically, that might be the next club.
Hilarious that they're from the first association.
First in the Pacific with a minus 10 gold differential.
Outrageous.
Well, that's the like, Dostow hasn't even played like he hasn't had his best season at
all, but you know, things are clicking offensively for everyone else up there.
You got Leo Carlson who's been a stud.
Carter Gochies arrived in the NHL and obviously Beckett Seneca points in pretty solid hockey
as a 19 year old in the NHL, so yeah, that's a good talent down there in Anaheim.
Yeah, he's unreal and our guys over at Lockdown ducks will take care of each step of the
way.
If you want to know more about those players and then Sunday, I mean, Macon Celebrini.
The amount of Macon Celebrini jerseys in Ottawa was astounding and some of them still
had the tags on the jerseys for sure.
Like these were brand new, not off the press.
Macon Celebrini jerseys, obviously, he made even more waves making the Olympics all
across Canada.
Everyone's like, this kid is the future of hockey Canada.
So there was a lot of that.
It was funny.
I was saying the percentage of away jerseys that were Macon Celebrini was near the same
as the amount of ducks jerseys that had fictional characters on the back.
I saw a lot of out of banks jerseys in the crowd.
I saw some goldburns jerseys.
Carly Conways.
No Conways.
He's back there, but it's so funny and those are just classic, classic jerseys to have in
the back of the closet, but all that aside, the senators are winning and it hasn't really
mattered that much because the East playoff race right now is absolutely bonkers.
He got the broons and red wings sitting in a playoff spot right now in the wildcard, both
with 82 points.
They both have 68 games played.
So Ottawa's got two games in hand.
Columbus has one game in hand.
The senators are five point back.
Columbus is only one point back.
And they're only two back of the islanders who are third in the metropolitan and all of
a sudden, the two, three seeds in the metropolitan are starting to play a lot better.
Pittsburgh's won two straight, huge win in Colorado for them.
And then you saw the islanders take care of business in Toronto and Matthew Schafer's
first game in his hometown.
So you're seeing like out West, if you go to the last 10 games of all the teams, even
in the mix for a wildcard spot, nobody has more than five wins in their last 10, whereas
you look at the East and sure you could say the Boston and Detroit only have four in their
last 10, but they're finding ways to get points.
The broons are back to back over time losers and the teams that are coming.
That's what's making that race a lot more interesting than out West.
Columbus is six, oh, and four in their last 10 and Ottawa is seven, one, and two.
You can even say the flyers are six, three, and one, but they've got a steeper hill to climb.
So I don't think that we can really include them in this.
This is this is what it's all about.
You want the wildcard race to come down to teams winning, not teams dropping down and potentially
for sure, but it's been a whole lot of fun to watch.
Oh, absolutely.
Like you want it to be a good race down the stretch and we're getting that.
It's not just the wildcard teams.
You mentioned it, man.
Like, you know, the pens and islanders now got to feel threatened about Columbus come
from one of those spots.
Like those blue jackets, those pesky jackets, man, like they won't go away.
Like Jack Green's playing some outstanding gold tending and obviously, you know,
you're getting some big contributions up and then line up from that club over in Columbus.
They haven't lost the game reg in over 10 games.
Like that's just a team that just continues to win and stack points and then out
is one point out of a wildcard spot, two points out of a metro spot, a divisional spot
there with both Pittsburgh and the islanders sitting there with 83 points.
So I'd be, you know, if you're Pittsburgh in New York, like you got to make sure
that you finish strong because you got a team coming in and I don't think either
of those two clubs, Pittsburgh or the islanders want to get into the wildcard mix
and, you know, be forced to have to do the crossover and then have to go to play
their Buffalo or Tampa or, you know, even the islanders, I mean, or the hurricanes.
Like if you're Pittsburgh in New York, you probably would like it to stay two,
three and play each other because then, you know, like the other options of Carolina
or Buffalo definitely not ideal. So yeah, it's, it's, it's finally becoming quite the race here.
You think I need to get shakes out though Ross. Like when all said and done, who gets in,
who falls out? Yeah, well, I think the Columbus is going to get one of those top three spots in
the metro. They're 16, 2 and 4 under Rick bonus. Like that, that's incredible.
Their only regulation losses came to Ottawa and to Boston. Otherwise, they've been perfect,
perfect. It's, it's ridiculous. And you know that they have talent, but it's kind of the,
the some of their parts is greater than any one piece. I know they got Zach Ransky, of course,
leading the way, but they went four and oh, when he, when he missed a bunch of games,
the three, you know, when he was sick for a week, like that is the true definition of a team.
And every single night, like beating up on the hurricanes five one last night, like, come on.
And you got to give Don with Del a ton of credit. Look at what Mason Marchman's been doing since
coming in. Like that was an early move way before the deadline. Like we got to turn things around.
How are we going to do it? Marchman has 12 goals and 21 points and 25 games for them. Like
that's an incredible stretch for him. You got Carl Marchenko, who he knew was nasty,
but the, the play of Charlie Coil off season edition for them, he's been unbelievable 55 points,
plus 10 and 67 games that they're just the true definition of a team. And I think that they're
going to sneak into the top three spot there. I don't know whether it's going to be Pittsburgh
or the Islanders coming out Pittsburgh's making it clear that they're not,
they're not a team that relies on one player or two players because you look at them missing
Sydney Crosby still since the Olympics and getting Malkin missing five games for suspension.
Sure, he comes back and helps out right away with two goals and an assist against Colorado.
But that's a team that's relying on guys who come in again, an early season trade,
Igor Chinacov, been unbelievable for them so far, fitting in really well. And they've just
have all these guys Justin Brazo career high end points. There's a hilarious video after the game
in Colorado. I guess it was an inside joke in the team, but Nola Chari hit 10 assists in a season
for the first time in his career and they gave him a pop got a picture of Sid Malkin for it,
the whole nine yards. I think the undercover story there too is Eric Carlson looks like he's
turned back the clock. Yeah, he's been leading the way for them. So it's going to be a really,
I would say, impressive battle. We're out west. It's like, who's going to be the team that
finds a way in? Oh, at least it's like, you're not going to want to play those wild card teams
because whoever makes it is going to have to be on such a good run to get into the playoffs
that they're going to be clicking on all cylinders. Yeah, I'm with you. The Columbus definitely
gets in there and then probably I think it's going to be Boston Detroit and Ottawa fighting for
one spot. Yeah, yeah, I think so too. Well, I guess, you know, one of those teams up all
out of the metro would be fighting for the other, no? Yeah, I guess so. Like, so if you got
Columbus falling getting in, you got, you know, New Yorker Pittsburgh falling out of it.
Yep, they can one spot and then yeah, I guess yeah, Boston Detroit, Ottawa for that final wild
card you're saying. Yeah, yeah. Well, and Ottawa's got a couple a huge matchups coming up. They
got the Islanders tomorrow and then the biggest one because right now, Ottawa's five points back
of the Detroit Red Wings with two games in hand and they play each other, not not this two or
sorry, this upcoming Tuesday. So a week from yesterday, that's a reg that you have to win that
game and reg have to win that game and reg have to and Ottawa and Detroit have gone over time two
of the three times they've played so far this year. Ottawa's still winless. They're all one and two
so far against Detroit this season. So that's about as much wind, but Ottawa's got to get there,
right? Like, Ottawa's at a point in their season where every loss feels like 10 losses where they
lost a Montreal of all teams and that was a team that they could have potentially been chasing
and that two points kind of put them out of reach. So it's going right down and if you look
analytically, Ottawa was one of the better teams in the league this season. It's just been goal
tending has not been good. They started all marked both games last weekend, which people are like,
whoa, like that's a heavy workload for a guy who hasn't played a whole lot and I've been well,
I got a staff where I'll save for the other side, but it is one of the wildest stats I've seen
in quite some time. We'll get to that next. I want to hear who's in, who's out for you and we'll
get into the tough news that Leon dry saddle has been ruled out for the regular season. That's
next year listening to locked on NHL your team every day.

on NHL your team every day part of locked on podcast network the number one sports podcast network
last thought here about the Ottawa Senators because it does really just come down to goal tending
for them. You can go back to the game that they beat the Columbus Blue Jack it's this is December
11 in Linus all marks last 16 games he has an 11 1 and 3 record and get this with an 8 97 save
percentage 11 1 and 3 with an 8 a sub 900 save percentage. Yeah I mean. That's what I'm just
scoring goals. Sands are scoring some goals. They don't just don't give up any shots they're
averaging the fewest amount of shots again per game entirely. Yeah that's true too.
Do you see the crazy stat about the Montreal Canadians? Yeah I did 900 save percentage. It's
pretty close with Ottawa too. Yeah I mean. Just have not been getting goal tending. I think Coco tweeted
it out. Yeah he did last thing. He was working. I was watching the Habs broadcast he was he was
him and Frankie Carano were just all over that. So he's the Habs are 27 0 and 3 when they get a 900
or better save percentage out of their goal tenders 10 19 and 7 when it's below 900 so when that
team gets average goal tending they're a wagon an absolute wagon. It's crazy like if they can get
quality goal tending out of one of Dovish or maybe even that Jacob Valor kid the Montreal
Canadians could be a problem to come play out time. I don't think it could happen but boy would I
love a Sands Habs first round match up. Yeah I mean. I don't even know what it was. It's not happening.
The Habs from the division or the Sabre or the Lightning or I guess one of the Lightning or
Sabre's fall out and somehow that you get a 2-3. Yeah you could get as a 2-3 but yeah. It's not
happening. I just want to make the playoffs. I'm not looking at 2-3 Mikey. I'm not looking at 2-3.
That's fair. That's fair. What do you think the Oilers are looking at right now? Because I mean
that was a huge win against San Jose last night after the news that Leon Drysato was going to be
out for the regular season. They beat them 5-3 and man. That's even more interesting because
I saw Sharks fans not cheering for the injury but certainly taking note that they have the Oilers
unprotected first round pick this season. Yeah which so obviously Sharks would love to
what a love to win that game last night and put a dent in it but I mean now the Oilers I think
are going to make the playoffs. I don't think it's even even a conversation that they don't at this
point. The Oilers are ready and probably going to have still winning the division. Yeah but you
know I believe so like a as nice as a story it's been there in Anaheim. I still think Edmonton
would all set and done will finish the top of the Pacific. Although the Drysato injury is tough
you still have Conor McDavid and I'll like it. You still got Mick Jesus who was out there making
plays last night. Zach Hyman scored a goal last night. Ryan Nugin Hopkins like they still have
some great players out there and they seem to be playing a little bit better defensively. That
that Conor Murphy pickup was a savvy pickup by the Oilers and now they've moved on and
they've named Conor Ingram for starters. So then we got to worry about Tristan Jari letting
in six goals a game either. If Conor Ingram is going to come out and play some decent goals and
give him a bit of a run. So you know it's obviously tough news to hear that Leon Drysato is going to
be up for the remainder of the regular season. You don't want that especially a team that's in a
playoff race and a divisional race but I still have full faith that the Oilers can get it done
in Conor McDavid can throw the cape on once again. I am curious though if you think that'll
impact the MVP odds. If they can if he can end up leading this team to a division title with it
you know without Drysato for 15 games I feel like that should be he should be talked about more
in the MVP conversation if he can get that done because right now he's fourth in MVP
odds on Fandoah plus 850 and if he has to go legend mode over the next few games to lead this
team to a division title I think that should get a little bit more attention for the MVP conversation.
Do you think heart trophy voters care about even strength points?
I mean yes I think they do doesn't make David's fourth in even strength points despite
leading the league and scoring. He's got five more power play points than anybody and oh would
you look at that it's Leon Drysato next he's got 11 more power play points than anybody else
outside of Edmonton. I know he's lethal. It's a lethal power play. It's a more power play
league for a reason he's the head of it so that makes total sense to me. I mean selfishly I want
Nikita Kutrov because we gave out the tip on Fandoah about a month and a half two months ago like
watched Nikita Kutrov and he leads the league in points per game this season at 1.79 but yeah
I think it could impact it for sure. I mean he's got 37 goals. I honestly wouldn't count him out
hitting 50 this year. 13 goals in the last 13 games he would need maybe maybe it seems a
little a little bit of a stretch at that point but I think certainly heart trophy. I don't have
rockets in in there but heart trophy for sure. Well no because McKinnon's already got 45
and McKinnon's got a couple extra games to play too so yeah he's 10 out of McKinnon either.
No. What are the odds of Fandoah right now? Well McKinnon's minus 260 so pretty heavily favored.
Wow. And then Kutrov at plus 330, McCelebrini plus 460. And then there's a drop.
McDavid plus 850. I think that's great value especially with Leon going out. I think that there's
a little narrative play for McDavid to kind of if he can get that team into it without Leon and
really solidify that Pacific division and he goes on a heater down the stretch.
Is possible. I mean he finishes with the most points in the NHL. Very possible that McDavid
when all said and done can end up with the you know a lot more heart trophy love.
It's going to be a great race to the finish. We know that Leon actually quickly you can get
to feel that plus 192 for McKinnon. Really? Yeah. I'd probably take that. I agree.
You can also assuredly know that Leon drag side will finish his regular season with 35 goals 97 points
in 65 games. General manager Stan Bowman coming out this morning and saying he does not need surgery
and is expected to be in the lineup for game one of the playoffs should the oilers qualify
which we're both on the same side. They are making the playoffs. They're in the Pacific division
like that's all you need to know. Yeah they're fine. So let me ask you this. If they already know
today that he's good to go for game one of the playoffs. If let's just hypothetically game 82.
It was win or lose like if if whatever happens they had to win game 182. That's the difference
between winning or losing the division or man let's even say winning or losing home ice advantage.
You think that you would play that game? I do. Yeah. Yeah. So why would they say he's up for the
remainder of the season and then guaranteed he's good for game one. Yeah. I know that is made like
he will miss the remainder of the season. Like you know what maybe they don't know.
If he's good for he's going to be good two days from now to win. It's a must win game now.
The game 82. Why not play him? I just don't see why you make that declaration. He'll definitely be
ready for game one. But if we need him for game 82 there's no possible way he could be ready. No
way. No possible way. Yeah. They've also got two days off before their final game of the season
which is at home against the Vancouver Canucks. So maybe they'd feel hey they could probably handle
that without Leon dry saddle. Well let's say let's say Edmonton loses six in a row and then they
need that final game to advance into the playoffs. I don't know. I saw where bizarre to sit here
say he's out for the remainder of the season and then the very next day but he'll definitely play
game one. It's like. Yeah. So what if he gave me two like he there's no possible way he could play
game 82. But he'll definitely play game one of the playoffs. It's just it's just weird to me.

from my co host Mike de Stefano, check out locked on Maple Leafs. I am over at locked on
senators. Mikey air three stars the week. Everybody knows the three stars the week belong from
Wednesday to Wednesday. So in the last seven days, who's your third star of the week?
Yeah, I think we give it to Bobby McMahon traded from the Maple Leafs to the Seattle Kraken
at the right at the 11th hour of the deadline. 259 that deal pretty much went through.
And he's been a big pick up for the Kraken. He's got four goals, six points in the three games
since he's gotten there monster week for him. So I think Bobby McMahon deserves some love.
We'll give him the third star. Yeah, really impressive for a guy when you go into a new team,
like obviously you want to have a good start. That goes without saying captain obvious,
but when you actually accomplish that, it's got to make you feel so good and like a part of the
team right away. Hey, Sneaky, great year for him, man. 23 talks. That's awesome. It's not
Sneaky on my end, because I watched it here in Toronto. And when he only received a second round
pick, I was like, of course, Lee's not able to get the most out of their guy. And right now,
the Kraken pretty happy with their with their Bilo option on on Bobby McMahon. But good for him,
good for him. It's funny because Lee fans are happy for Bobby McMahon and you know,
want to see him succeed. But at the same time, the the draft pick that they got for Scott Lotton,
who is just on the outside looking in on the playoffs, chasing the Kraken, that it was a
conditional third that only turns into a second if they make the playoffs. And it's pretty much
a two horse race. We're not two or but like one of Seattle or LA are going to make the playoffs.
So one of Bobby McMahon or Scott Lotton will make the playoffs possible neither make the playoffs
too. I guess if San Jose or Nashville or Amy the jet sneaked their way into there. But
Lee fans, you know, I think at this point have become big Kings fans. So that that conditional
third can turn to a second round pick. Yeah, and you love a good story like Bobby McMahon,
undrafted, makes his NHL debut at 26 years old and then gets 15 goals, then gets 20 goals.
And now he's set a career high with his 23rd of the season in that loss to Tampa last night.
He's got a little, he's a little Hyman likes to him. He's not, you know,
Zach Hyman, but he plays kind of a similar game. Good speed, decent size. And he can he can shoot
the puck. He can shoot the puck pretty well. Second star of the week. And this one came in
right at the wire late last night. Nikita Kutrov puts up a hat trick, a five point effort in a
six to win. He finishes the week with seven points in three games. Kutrov is as automatic as there
is in the National Hockey League and the way that he does it without being as fast of a skater as
any of the other guys in that top echelon of point producers. Sometimes it doesn't even look like
he's trying out there. And all of a sudden he just pulls moves out of his bag that are truly
remarkable. Nikita Kutrov easily the second star of the week. Yeah. I mean, he just continues,
continues to go out there and put up multi-point performance after multi-point performance after
multi-point performance. I mean, the number since, you know, like Jan one, like in 2026 are absurd
what Nikita Kutrov has been able to do. Another five point effort this week. He's closing it on
McDavid trying to, you know, close in on that art Ross Trophy. He's second in MVP odds as well.
Yeah, he will continue to be a mainstay on our list here. So well deserved to get that second
second star consideration. And if don't let Nikita Kutrov get a point against you because if he
gets one, he's probably going to get multiple points. He has at least a point in 49 games this
year. But in 36 of them, he has multi-point games and he actually has eight four point games.
At least his two five point games, but eight games where he has four or more points this season.
That would be a great career for some players. Yeah, I was just thinking I'm like, how many players
in the league you think have had four point games this year? Not many. Not many. Like it's wild.
That's he's had eight of those. Do you think they closed the gap on Buffalo here?
Who do you think wins the Atlantic? I think Buffalo wins it. Yeah, Buffalo runs away with it there.
Yeah, there's been 122 four point games in the entire national hockey league this year.
And Kutrov has eight of them. Yeah, yeah, pretty solid. Yeah, not bad. Hey, good stats department.
Pulling that out of my hat. Yeah, it's pretty old. Yeah, buy game. Unclick some results in a way
you go to our first star of the week and at Lockdown Sands, we're a Goli friendly show.
And we talked about the Columbus Blue Jackets. They've been unbelievable and a huge reason why
is jet grieves. One of the undersized Goli's in the league does it a little bit differently,
but man is he efficient. What a week it's been for jet grieves. He's got two wins in two games.
That's all you can ask for Goli go out win, but the way he's been able to battle and help his
team win truly incredibly. He stopped 45 of 47 shots, only allowed two goals one in each game
and one of them went to overtime. So he's got that 0.96 goals against average. Just an incredible run
for jet grieves. He's been, I mean, this is two years now. I think jet grieves we can confidently say
good goalie, right? Good goalie. He had that run at the end of the season last year, almost got
Columbus into the playoffs. And then he's like, Oh, I guess we need to have that run a little earlier.
So they had it a little earlier this year. And now they're right on the outside looking in, but
have a bit more of a run way to get themselves into the post season, which I fully expect them to do.
But yeah, you know, started two games this week, a two one win against the flyers, as you mentioned,
in a shootout. And then they'll big win last night against Carolina. I mean, you beat
Carolina 5-1. You limit them to a single goal. Stop 27 to 28 and 964, safe percentage in that game.
It's pretty good, man. Pretty good stuff. So, you know, jet grieves, he's really part of the
part of the solution here where when it comes to turning things around for the blue jackets,
obviously, you know, the coach and the system must be working well, but jet grieves, man. His
guys playing some really good hockey this year, and 909, safe percentage, which is tied for
11th best in the NHL this season. So, you know, he's been one of the better goal tenders of late two.
So, yeah, certainly, I think jet grieves deserving of top spot here.
He's 10-0 and two in his last 12 decisions for the 9-14. So it's very good. And I think what's
really cool too is this week's three stars. Two of them are undrafted. Jet Grieves was also an
undrafted goal-pender. And even Kutra, like Kutra being a second-round pick is a complete joke.
Like, obviously, it's Tampa that gets him, right? 50 overall. Like, the end of the second round.
Was the Russian factor back in the day? But he was already playing the blue.
People were worried about him going back overseas, playing in Russia.
His Q numbers, and I'll end the show with this because it is the most... Oh, sorry, they drafted
him out of Russia. Yeah, they're action. And then he came back to play one more year in the KHL
and MHL combined. And then he comes over to North America, starts with the Quebec ramparts.
And I guess it doesn't go well there. I don't know. Patti Wall was his coach at that point.
He has traded to Ruan Miranda. No, Wall would have still been with Colorado by then.
Oh, yeah, 2013. Yeah, you're right. 53 points in 27 games. And then has 24 and 14 playoff games.
And I think this was a good time to use the old phrase, the rest is history.
That guy is a complete wagon. So our three stars of the week. Number three, Bobby McMahon,
number two, Nikita Kutrov, and number one, Jet Greaves. And that's our show today.
