Jets Trade for Smith, Eyeing QB in Draft

On April 17th, the New York Jets just grabbed veteran quarterback Geno Smith from the Raiders

and named him their starter for this season.

At 35 years old, he's seen as a solid bridge guy until they land a young passer, likely

in this draft or the 2027 one.

They've got a ton of ammo with 19 picks over the next two drafts, including five first

rounders and four in the top 44 picks starting.

This weekend, that trade was cheap, and just the late round pick swap made official on

March 13th, and they're only paying Smith $3.3 million.

This year, it keeps their cap space free and draft capital intact for other holes on

the roster, like they need good players everywhere, not just a quarterback.

Right away, experts are calling it a smart play.

NFL Network's Tom Pulitzer-O-Sys Smith buys time with those five firsts to snag the

next franchise guy.

Judy Batista, as he's a young 35, motivated, and gives competent play without burning resources,

even if he's not the long-term fix.

Now, they're eyeing developmental options on day two or three.

Alabama's Ty Simpson could be the second quarterback off the board, though some question

has fit.

Dane Brugler's mock has them taking pinstates big-armed Drew Aller in round four at pick 103,

a six-foot-five guy with sharp accuracy, and low turnovers.

With Smith stabilizing things short-term, the jets can hunt value without forcing a

top pick on a rookie.
