Yom HaShoah: Lessons from the Holocaust [Short & Sad Inspiration]

In this somber yet inspiring episode marking Yom HaShoah (27 Nisan), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe reflects on the Holocaust's scale: over 42,000 ghettos and camps, 30,000 slave labor camps, 1,150 Jewish ghettos, nearly 1,000 concentration camps, and estimates of 15–20 million people imprisoned or murdered across Europe, including 6 million Jews (1.5 million of them children). He stresses the sin of the innocent bystander—when evil unfolds (muggings, rapes, antisemitic attacks in broad daylight), we cannot remain silent or walk by.

Rabbi Wolbe warns against "cancel culture" and purification movements that echo elitist cleansing, urging caution: Germany saw itself as the pinnacle of civilization yet descended into barbarism. He highlights two Jewish responses to the Shoah—some distanced from God, others (including his own grandparents who lost family) drew closer through emunah. Lessons for Jews: stop assimilating or hiding identity (wear yarmulke, tzitzit, Star of David with pride); teach children to embrace Judaism openly; remember daily (light a ner neshama, learn mishnayot for the neshamos); never forget that spiritual Holocaust continues via assimilation in the Diaspora (only Orthodoxy is growing). True greatness is exemplified by stories of self-sacrifice in the camps—sharing one blanket among many, giving the last matzah to children so they would know its taste. We must be an ohr lagoyim (light to the nations), exemplifying honesty, kindness, and godliness so the world points to us and says, "These are God's people."

The episode ends with a call to turn Yom HaShoah into rejoicing through unity, mitzvot, and anticipation of Moshiach and the rebuilt Temple in Yerushalayim.
