Nate & DiNardo breakdown what happened today at LECOM Park as the Pirates defeated Team Colombia in a World Baseball Classis Exhibition. Jose Urquidy continued to look effective as he battles for the 5th starter role in this 2026 rotation. Offensively, Konnor Griffin, Jake Mangum, & Duce Gourson also produced.
We also had interviews with Isaac Mattson and Justin Lawrence. Each pitcher, as well as multiple bullpen pitchers looked really solid today.

Recap, presented by Fandall, I'm your host, Anthony Denardo, with me.
We have Nate in the house.
Nate, how you doing, man?
Pretty good. How are we doing today?
Lovely. It was a great day today. It was a great baseball game.
A lot of good stuff happened today. Content-wise, the Pirates won again.
I know the record doesn't officially count for spring training.
It was an exhibition versus Columbia.
But they won. A lot of good stuff that we've seen this spring from them.
Yeah, the Pirates don't just run the grapefruit league.
We run the Americas.
So I said after the game.
There it is, there it is.
But I mean, I think when the story is this spring is, of course, the fifth starter.
Yep.
And, you know, yes, that we saw Clevinder start.
Then you saw Majinski take over.
Those are two names that are interesting in that.
Today you saw another guy that's interested in that fifth starter.
Yeah, who's a Rikiti?
He's kind of grown on me these last couple of days.
This first time seeing him live.
I've never seen him in action before in a pirate game or anything.
Three innings, two hits, one walk, three Ks.
Kind of just like Mike Clevinder.
They both looked efficient the last two days.
I thought Rikiti got out of innings a lot quicker than Clevinder did.
And he had a lot later contact off of them.
I mean, Team Columbia, you're playing some guys that have been in the big leagues before.
Not a lot of mainstays.
You got like Gio or Shela, Donovan, Solano, and then former pirate, Harold Ramirez, of course.
There you go.
But still, like, they're talented guys.
Got guys that might be playing in the KBO or NPB as well or in the Mexican league.
But a lot of minor leagueers too.
But like, still, Rikiti had one job to win the game.
And he ate the pirates.
Literally, they had, they weren't down at all in this game.
Yeah, he looked good.
Yeah.
But sure, I mean, like you said, they did differently.
I feel like Clevinder wasn't as efficient as you mentioned.
But Clevinder brought the swing and the stuff.
Yeah.
Where Rikiti just kind of went out there and pitched effectively.
Like you said, a lot of light content, contact.
This fifth sort of battle so far, this point of time, this turned March.
But everyone's doing what they need to do, you know, to win that spot.
And I do think that Rikiti is leading it.
Like, I think that makes the most sense.
Like, have him there.
And then bring maybe Obarco, bring something else.
But again, like today was his turn.
And he did everything to show like, hey, this is why I'm here.
This is why I was decent before Houston.
Like, I know injuries, do you rail him?
But like, hey, I wasn't effective pitcher.
Remember me.
And he's kind of doing that right now.
Yeah.
And I'll just add this about Rikiti before I move on.
42 total pitches, 31 strikes.
Yeah.
It was efficient today.
Right.
And he was brought in on a cheaper contract.
And the first reaction is like, oh, there's the cheaper pitcher.
Well, he even make the team.
He's given the pirates every basically response
to make the team.
And he's looked pretty decent so far this spring.
I mean, I mean, it's only week two.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
But like still.
Fairly.
Yeah.
He's looked like one of the better pitchers this spring.
And then not get up myself about that.
Like, I'm going to be completely honest.
He's looked pretty good.
Yeah.
I've been very intrigued by what I've seen by him.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Like, again, Barco, Clevinder,
they're more of the swinging miss strikeout type of guys
where Rikiti again, like at his prime,
he wasn't the guy who was striking out nine or plus.
But he was just, it's almost like back to the race series days.
Oh, yeah.
Right.
Just give me three pitches or less.
You know, pitch the contact.
You have guys on the left side of the infield,
like Jared Srilo and Connor Griffin.
Well, that's going to help you out defensively as well.
Spencer Horowitz manning first base.
Like, he was pretty good defensively.
Yeah.
So, you know, like he did his job.
He did effectively for a fifth starter who's going to go out there
and just pitch efficient.
Right.
He's not going to be a strikeout artist.
But he's going to go out there, pitch well,
pitch weak contact and give your chance to give your team a chance to win.
That's what you're hoping for for him.
Of course, mostly it's health.
Right.
If you can say healthy, you believe in the talent there to do that.
And again, today, good stuff from Rikiti.
I did like that.
But also, let's go to the offense.
Yeah.
Right.
Connor Griffin played today as well.
He almost got hit in the face.
I got a good picture of it too.
Yeah, you did.
I was like, they almost killed him.
They tried to kill Connor Griffin.
But yeah, I mean, he does go ahead a week double.
Yeah.
But it all doubled right in the fair territory.
I was like, oh, go.
He was like a second base really quick, too.
He was like, and it wasn't on TV, sadly.
So I know it could really watch it.
But like you were listening on the radio or if you were alive there,
you saw it was like hustle out of the box.
Even like a ground out, hustle out of the box.
Right.
And I first time, like, I saw Griffin at least play in Altoona last year.
Like, one, I went up to Altoona for a game.
But seeing him like wearing a pirate jersey and spring training is really cool.
So like, you're able to come down here, come down here and watch it.
Like, as he's going to be here a while, I think, because Nicky G's now with Mexico.
Right.
He's got a lot more opportunity for Connor Griffin to get some more playing time.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
And like he should because he's battling for an opening spot.
Yeah.
Potentially.
So we're here.
And I hope that happens.
Yeah.
But the funny thing, of course, is we all talk about three hits, three home runs.
He has a zero baby.
And today, well, oh, yeah, he still does because this is an exhibition game.
Yeah.
This isn't count for actual spring training.
So sad.
These numbers and sad still matter in our fake grapefruit league that we run.
Of course.
Right.
Obviously.
But that's also transition to Jake Mangum.
Yep.
Obviously, like he was in the trade with Brandon Lau and Montgomery as well.
There's been talk about him.
Like, what is his role?
Obviously, with some additions, it looks like he's going to be like the fourth outfielder,
which is probably best suited for him.
We know he could play defensively.
He showed that arm in right field.
He's shown that defense.
But also, like, he's in the ball.
You know, we know he's not a home run hitter, but this is the guy who is kind of a free swinger.
You know, there's not a pitch, I think.
I don't think he can't hit.
At least in his mind, he doesn't think that he can hit.
And so far this spring, he's making some good contact.
He's driving the ball.
Today, two hits, a double.
So far, what is Jake Mangum as well?
I mean, this is a guy who I think could be a nice fit on this team.
Yeah.
I completely agree.
Like, I would like to say, like, there could be in my head a battle for the fourth outfielder,
maybe, like, with Justin St. Garcia.
Like, I brought it up.
So I know your thoughts.
Go ahead.
Talk, talk, talk, your ish.
My thing with Justin St. Garcia is everyone's like, I need him to say, Jim said,
give him reps.
I completely agree with.
But if he's been doing great enough to be in the major, major league squad, put him in the
big leagues.
But at the same time, where's he going to play?
I get it.
It's a real bad boy.
He's pastword-pilled.
I want to see his success.
But Jake Mangum, back to him, not to get on a password tangent there.
But I really like what I've seen out of Jake Mangum.
Two hits today.
Two RBI, scored a run.
Three A Bs.
Really good.
Like, I was talking to him a meal yesterday.
Like, he is a scrappy type of player.
Um, it seems like, like, players love him.
Like, I've seen, like, the fans have been chanting, like, go Jake.
Like, the fans here in Braydenton, like, might not be able to go to a single pirate game
if they just live here all the time.
They seem to love Jake.
Like, they're like, go Jake.
And like, he's the, he's the player that they're already on first-name basis with.
It's kind of funny.
Like, they're like, Jake, that's my favorite.
That's my guy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, we're seeing it.
We're seeing.
He's called the mayor.
Right.
You saw the interview Tyler had with him and just like, people love him from all over
everywhere.
He goes.
I feel like he becomes a fan favorite.
Um, and he's just a scrappy.
He's a guy that you root for.
He's just a guy that's like, you know what?
I'm going to root for him.
Pirates fans have been waiting for that type of, like, that Sean Rodriguez, that Josh Harrison
type.
Like, scrappy is going to get dirty, is going to run the bases good.
He wants to.
Is that Jake Mingum?
Yeah.
What was the quote he said?
Like, I want to touch the ball and run or whatever it was.
So, yeah, there's Jake Mingum, um, outside of that, anyone else that you want to talk about
offensively?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'm intrigued by him.
I know he's kind of gone up in my personal, like, prospects, like what I'm looking at.
Um, he had a solid day today.
Of course, two RBI's had a hit in two A.B.s.
I know Jim's really high on him.
I know the prospect M.O.V. pipeline released their prospects.
I think he was 29th today.
I mean, like, it seems like the pirates are high on him.
So, yeah.
That's all I have on Duskhorus.
And he looked pretty cool.
My first time actually seeing him play.
So, yeah.
I just want to add that.
Like, I think this is a prospect where a lot of people don't really know him.
Keep your eye on him.
I have a feeling, keep your eye on him.
He's one of those, like, I think the best way to put it is that he's a carnal.
He's a typical St. Louis carnal's process.
Probably triple A.N.D. this year, I would assume.
Right.
Double A.
I would not be surprised if he's on the Major League team.
I wouldn't be surprised if he's got it.
No one heard of it.
And all of a sudden, he's like having, he's carving out a role in the Major League.
Another Jake Mangum type.
Then maybe.
Um, all right.
So, we want to talk about the bullpen.
Before we do, let's hear a little bit from our sponsors.

All right, so again, we talk about the offense, talk about the fish starter battle.
Let's talk about this bullpen a lot.
Now, I mean, again, it's the bullpen.
They only get like an inning here and there.
So I think now we're weak and too weak to or starting to see some of the bullpen arms,
get some action.
A lot of guys participated today, and they did their job.
They did pretty well.
We saw a lot of guys that are going to be on the team.
Justin Lawrence, Mason Montgomery, Isaac Mattson, Wilbur Dottelli might see at the end
of the year, maybe not, and then Brandon Bedrois, and then of course, Tom Kowski came in.
But like, Bedrois, I thought it looked solid at the end of the game.
Dottelli didn't have the greatest day, three walks, two strikeouts, and an inning, but like,
Justin Lawrence, Mason Montgomery, Isaac Mattson, all efficient.
They all got a clean inning work, so.
Yeah, and let's start with Mason Montgomery, because we talk about Mangum, obviously low.
He was also involved in that trade, you know, with him, we know the stuff is elite.
I mean, he has stuff, but stuff doesn't mean much unless you can harness it and turn it
into results.
You know, last year, the results weren't truly there.
Maybe that's something you work in, you know, this year, I think he has this stuff, right,
to be an elite reliever.
Reliever.
He raised fan told me yesterday while I was watching the game.
It was an older gentleman.
He said, you guys really fleeced us on this trade, and he was like, it's not just Mangum
and La, like, Laudhurts the most, but like, a lot of raised fans were intrigued by,
even though Mason Montgomery didn't have the greatest year last year, it's just what
he can do, the potential that makes him really intriguing, like a really intriguing name
to watch.
Yeah.
And the powers have done pretty well.
Bill Murphy's in there.
So let's see what he can do to harness him and make him improve, but today was a pretty
good day for him.
Yeah, like Bill Murphy.
And the Eurkete thing, because that's a guy he's worked with.
True.
And it's like, he's a guy, like, the Ashrussall Successful Murphy.
And so far, like, I haven't really seen much of the effects so far.
Well, I'm going to judge it, of course, in the regular season or so.
Right.
Well, like, it's cool to like see some of these guys already take in control, like,
their own spring narrative, especially like a Lauren, some Montgomery and a Matson.
Yeah.
And speaking of Matson, you, uh, you, well, I guess I see you.
I talk to Isaac Matson.
Um, so let's cut to that.
You know, that's awesome.
We had some great stuff from him.
All right.
Some with Isaac Matson.
Isaac Nice to meet you.
Um, so I want to ask you some things here.
Now, last year coming into camp, a little unknown, right?
Obviously you had a big role last year.
Building off now coming to this off season is certainly part of the bullpen now.
So what's, what's changing the off seasons from a last year of this year?
Yeah.
Honestly, not much.
Okay.
Yeah.
Uh, I think the work that I put in, you know, getting here, getting into the big leagues
and kind of establishing myself, I don't, I don't think that really changes.
Um, it's been working for me the last three or four years as far as getting into the
gym, um, working through my throwing progressions and, um, honestly, just like diving a little deeper
into, you know, what it's going to take to stay in the big leagues and be able to help
this team continue to win baseball games.
Sure.
Um, so yeah, some fine-tuning, um, but on, on the whole, it's been pretty much the same.
Okay.
So tell us what I know in case you're fastball.
Oh, yeah.
Uh, it's gone.
I wish I had more for you.
Um, I mean, it's just kind of the way I've
always thrown high school was the same way.
Like I wasn't throwing as hard as I was now, but still throwing pretty hard, um, but
I kind of just throw fastballs middle of the zone and guys would swing under it.
So I don't really know how or why, um, I leave that to the, the tech guys, the, the
same metric skies to figure out, but, uh, just blessed to be doing it.
As long as it happens there, right?
Yeah.
Um, are you working on anything?
I heard maybe we're working on a change up this off season coming this way.
Yeah.
And that goes back to the fine-tuning, um, diving into the numbers, talking with, with
Merf and the pitching, pitching core that we have, um, you know, how can I continue to
develop as a pitcher, especially against lefties and leveraged situations?
Um, yeah.
That's been a big focus for me this off season and happy with the work, happy to continue
to, to try and make that nasty and nasty.
It's great.
Excuse me.
Maybe tell us a little, Merf.
Like, what's the difference from my income coming into, uh, into the team?
Yeah.
I think, um, the, the thing that I, I told a couple of other people that I've been talking
to about him is like, he's, he's very much a collaborator, like he's still our leader
as far as the pitching core goes and the things that he brings, the knowledge and expertise
is awesome, but there's also like a two-way street that happens where he's, he's pretty
open with this communication.
And then as far as we go, it's like he's not, he doesn't bring his ego into it.
Um, he's pretty much open to that discussion of like, hey, I'm going to try this.
Let's do this together and pull in the same direction and see where this takes us.
Perfect.
Last question before you go.
What's Pit for Bolgan to do this year?
Oh, man.
I hope, I hope go to the Nadi.
All right.
No, it's, I'm excited for pull up their dome there.
Um, I know the NIs continue to grow.
So just happy to support Pit football, Pit athletics as a whole, um, I don't know the baseball
team's playing pretty well right now, so I'm just excited to see, uh, just see what
the best season goes.
Okay.
I'll, uh, that kind of progresses to the sprint.
Sure.
All right.
Well, awesome.
Hey.
Good luck.
Good to meet you.
Same.
So again, I mean like Isaac Mattson is also very intriguing.
I mean, he came last year.
We talked about the fastball.
I don't know.
Like, people just can't hit it.
But the fastball that's pretty much all he featured, but it seemed like this year he's
working on secondary stuff.
You know, taking that next level could really make him a, like, I'm not going to, like,
poo, poo, like the true threat, not that he wasn't a luxury at a very productive season,
but like, can he take it to that next level, um, and today he was also very effective.
Yeah.
Definitely.
I'm a big guy.
I mean, I'm high on Isaac Mattson, not just because like Pit Panther, but like, it was
just cool talking to him after the game, too.
He's like, yeah, Mason Heinshol, we're going to talk about these pit guys, um, um, it was
pretty fun conversation.
Like, before that, we got to talk about with Justin Lawrence.
Yeah.
I got to talk to him about his sweeper, um, his Panama connections, the almost pitch in
the WBC, as well as the effectiveness of, if it, is it actually difficult for a reliever
or starter to pitch in Colorado, which his answer was really funny.
And here with Pirates reliever, Justin Lawrence, how are you doing today, Justin?
I'm doing good.
Not a good one out there.
So I'm feeling good about it.
Yeah, I was going to ask you, um, we were watching you pitch, um, you're coming back
off an injury.
So what's it like, kind of, like, coming back, going through rehab and getting into
the spring training before the season starts, but we were out of month away.
Yeah.
No, I mean, the biggest thing is just coming in, feeling good.
Um, it's hard, you know, because you want to, you want to be a part of the team and
going to go out there and be ready.
But you have to be honest with yourself, uh, especially something kind of thing to keep
like an elbow.
Um, but I've, I've been honest with myself, I feel really good, but I hope I can start
up.
So, um, since the sound and the itself, it continues that way.
Yeah.
I know we were watching, we were talking about your sweeper a little bit for you, came
out here.
What makes it, like, so deadly to hit her today?
Um, obviously the arm's a lot, but, um, uh, the spin rate on it is really high.
So basically, the higher the spin rate, kind of the later, it's been a break, so that's
what hit her.
It might look like a fastball for a very long time, and then they say, kind of, risk at the
end, kind of change all that, where it'll kind of take off there for the end.
Okay.
Cool.
Um, you guys are playing Columbia today.
We know you're from Panama.
Born in Panama.
Are you communicating with any of you guys, you know, any of the guys on Team Panama?
Are you going to be rooting for them in this year's WBC?
Yeah.
I'm going to be rooting for them.
Um, I wanted to play for my, I got me okay from the organization, um, when I'm fortunate
I don't know if you guys saw a bunch of guys, uh, yeah, I'm Sharon's company or whatever
the MLB was using, kind of did their own assessment on guys, and I was one of the ones that unfortunately
wasn't able to, but, uh, would have been really cool to play in a second one because I want
to play in the next one.
And I know it's kind of a very, uh, small group of people that have been able to play
in three WBCs.
Yeah, it's, it's one of my favorite tournaments to watch, honestly, it's really cool.
Like, see, and even like Columbia there today, a lot of fans here from Columbia, I really
love the atmosphere.
It's like really cool.
What was it, like, pitching out there?
Some Columbia fans just having fun.
Oh, it's awesome.
I mean, the, the Spanish culture and baseball is so huge, uh, I think that's what makes
it.
WBC so special is everybody.
You know, you're playing the game, you love, you're playing the game, you're playing
as a kid, but now you're going and representing your country, uh, it's kind of something
that almost seems fake, you know, to, to where your country suggests and, uh, you know,
Spanish are very prideful when it comes to their country and their homeland.
So, uh, even in the next issue game like this, I know those, those guys are going out
there and they're putting it out all on the lines.
Yeah, one more question for you that we had.
So you're coming from the Colorado Rockies.
Is the difference in pitching from course to PNC, like out of course, field as dramatic
as a lot of pitchers to say or like fans see on like baseball reference, for example?
Yes.
Okay.
For me, specifically, um, I mean, I could get, yeah, I'd break down, I can get brown
down into the nitty gritty of why I wasn't successful there, um, you know, combination
of me, you know, not being able to repeat my mechanics most nice because it's difficult
when you go on seven days at elevation, you know, seven days in San Diego.
You're constantly, um, fine-tuning your mechanics to be able to essentially be two different
people, whether you're pitching in Denver or not, um, there's obviously guys that have
been successful pitching it in course, you know, the Kyle Freelens, um, Ryan Felner,
Hermann, all those guys, they've made careers, um, in Denver and I praise those guys because
it is at least for me was very hard to get accustomed to pitching at that altitude.
Okay.
Well, awesome.
That's how we got for you, Justin.
Best of luck this year and best of luck to Panama.
This year in WBC.
Thank you.
Appreciate it, guys.
So, yeah, like with Justin Lawrence, you know, that was a guy that I was intrigued
on last year when the parts picked him up.
It's like, I remember our tweet, I was like, if anything, great 80 hair.
Oh, yeah.
But, but he has some intriguing stuff and the fact that like what he was doing in Colorado,
like that doesn't really play, we look at the home one way splits.
There's some real production away.
The sweepers, you know, really effective, but he didn't really get the approval asher because
of injuries.
It's like, this is the guy I'm still looking at like this year.
He's coming in healthy.
If he can give a full season, like, I think he has a real, he has real potential to
be able to do that.
Oh, he was really good before the injury last year, like, I'm really, I like, he brought
up his arm slot to an interview, which I thought was really cool.
But I know before we go, I wanted to bring up the atmosphere today.
Okay.
I thought it was really nice saying like the Colombian fans in there, like it felt like
a mini, like I brought a mini World Cup, it was like a preview to the World Baseball
Classic.
I don't know if you got that vibe too, but like people were like screaming in their
native language.
Just lady was screaming in Spanish, like a lot of, yeah, I was like, this is awesome.
Like I wish I was at the, like able to go to Miami for a WBC game because there were
a lot of Colombian fans there.
Not a lot of fans overall in the crowd today, which makes sense.
There's not playing, they're not playing a major league team, like the raise came in
yesterday.
A lot of Tampa fans able to come into Braydenton, but like, pirate fans, Colombian fans
we got to hear the Colombian anthem on an accordion with the, it was just right after
break before the American one.
But like, it was really cool, saying like, Julio Tejeraan pitched for Colombia for brave.
Like, I mean, that guy was a dude back of the day and they get his fell off.
I mean, I love them as a pitch.
He's one of my guys going back to Phoenix, I guess.
But, yeah, it was kind of interesting, like I said, it wasn't a big crowd, but it was
a different crowd.
Yeah.
You know, most people coming up with fans, this one was kind of like, because of course,
it is just Colombia, but you saw a lot of people representing Colombia, the jerseys
were out.
Like, he said, like, we interviewed someone for a short and he said, like, he's here because
his wife is from Colombia.
Yeah.
So I thought that was pretty cool.
A lot of Colombian, like soccer jerseys, he's just a lot of baseball jerseys, like WBC
jerseys.
And it's just the hype of this tournament.
That's it.
This Friday starts.
That's it.
