Jrue Holiday (35 points, 11 assists) and Jerami Grant (30 points, 9 rebounds) led the Trail Blazers to a much needed victory in Memphis halting a losing streak against a shorthanded Grizzlies club. Plus, Donovan Clingan got ejected, Scoot Henderson is in the danger zone, and the Blazers filled their final two-way spot. And finally some newsy bits on the arena funding bill getting passed in the Oregon Senate and Chauncey Billups making a court appearance.

It's locked on Blazers your team every day in today's show talking about the Blazers
getting a much needed asterisk asterisk asterisk a much needed one twenty two one fourteen victory
in Memphis.
They were shorthanded because Danny did not return the Grizzlies even more shorthanded
because they played the night before and kind of have chosen this life.
We'll get into that game everything that happened drew all day was a monster Jeremy
Grant delivered in the second half Rob Williams had a really consistent game because they
needed him after Don McClingham got kicked out plus there's like a lot of there's a lot
of news to get into Blazers added another two way player got update on that plus a
little Chris Young blood reporting for you SB five fifteen oh one the arena bill passed
through the Senate and Johnson bill was in court we got a lot to get into we're going
to get into all of it.
It's what we do.
Let's just let's just not waste any more time.
Here's your fastest recap in the West Blazers win one twenty two one fourteen in Memphis.
You know they kicked off this road trip with the with kind of an ugly win and then they
lost to getting a lost couple games and it's like the it's not like the sky is falling
but it feels it it felt it's not like the sky is falling because just like the way they're
at in the in the season right they're not going to fall out of 10th place they're going
to you know they're going to be in they're going to be in the play and pretty much regardless
of what happens even if they at this point if they lose out they will they will almost
certainly still be in the play and it's like so they're they're there but it it just a
start to feel like they were further away from their goals and that this season hadn't
accomplished as much as you had hoped when at some point this season it felt like they
were like okay there this thing is really getting ready to go so this is more like a vibes
victory they need they need just a win a game for the vibes.
Denny obvi was listed as questionable you know typically the way the ladies of handle
injuries is that I've got one guy's miss multiple games they go from out to doubtful
and then when they get listed as questionable it is the indicator that they are going to
return Denny obvi spent two two days with the doubtful tag he went into this game with
the questionable tag and then it was eventually ruled out still missing games with that
back injury I mean they just I you know he they need to get him right but he is approaching
the point where he's not going to be eligible for end of season awards such that you know
just shutting him down entirely is on the table right because the reason that you would
bring him back is to play and earn the the recognition that he deserves because he's
had this excellent season but if he just can't play there's not a lot of reason to chase
hits they're not there yet but they will be there by they after a Friday's game in Houston
they will be there they will have they will arrive at that point where they kind of have
to make a decision about what their sort of goals are and what Denny's individual goals
are and just where he's at health wise obviously his health is more important than winning
most improved player award or whatever but are like having a chance to be on the all NBA
ballots but that matters right that matters to him in any case the the blazers are playing
the Grizzlies who were on on a second night of a backspack but they just had a couple
days off Grizzlies were in Minneapolis last night so not only are they traveling second
night of a backspack or not only second night of backspack but traveling like a road home
back to back when you meet it seem at home that's a bummer home bummer home game for the
Grizzlies you know that there's some long term injuries Zaki and and John Moran's obviously
not playing my guy branded Clark out out for basically the entire year but some players
who played the previous evening Cedric Howard Taylor Hendrix Scott Pippin Jr.
Tied Jerome they're also out of of this game so like the Grizzlies were had more available
bodies in Minneapolis than they do against the blazers Portland of course playing without
Chris Murray in addition to Danny Obdiacris is out with an illness that has been going through the
team so both teams incredibly shorthanded blazers just need a win for the vibes there they they
they kind of flirt with pulling away early in this game up nine in the first quarter but they're
only up four after one Scoot starts picks up two fouls early in the game was kind of a trend that
he just never he never gets going never got a rhythm I'll talk about that more in a moment
um they're up for they're up four after one they go in halftime tied but about three minutes
in 15 seconds before before halftime 314 if you want to get into the box score uh done
when clinging gets ejected for elbowing um omax prosper in the face um that's a levier max
sense prosper um omax okay clinging I think the NBA has cut and dry rules about contact above
the shoulders with an elbow that I don't love um so I knew the moment that clinging elbowed omax
in the face that he was going to get a flagrant one that was a done deal I don't love the ejection
here to be quite honest y'all like I do think he got him and I think he kind of um I don't think
he swung his elbow necessarily but I think he cleared space with that elbow and was like if you get
hit you get hit if he dies he dies um but like I just think that's a fly a single upgrade to a flagrant
the language from the referee was was unnecessary and excessive okay sure whatever um but he gets
ejected bomber he had four blocks in the first half he was rolling he had four blocks in 20 in the
first 21 minutes of the game he only ended up playing 12 and a half minutes he was the grizzlies
were playing so small um and clinging was kind of um you know he was he was he was holding it down
being a gigantic person uh tied a halftime though with no clinging uh city soko gets the start
and second half as a blazers match the small ball grids with the small ball unit of their own
and and they again flirt with pulling away in the third quarter Jeremy Grant has 16 um and he
doesn't do it at the foul line he'd no free throws uh only hit two threes he's five of six inside the
arc he he tacked the glass both off the bounce he got a bucket in transition um yeah like just this
was a Jeremy Grant live at the rim quarter 16 in the quarter uh blazed led by nine but kind of had
a ugly close to the third and up going into the fourth only up one uh scoot Anderson two thousand
first four four and a half minutes of the of the third ends up ends up uh back on the bench places
you know he said like 17 minutes through through three quarters he does not play in very much
tiaos putters not a big foul trouble guy but he is like a you're not you don't have it guy and
scoots didn't have it in this game um but the blazers are going to hold on in the fourth quarter
because drew holiday brings them home yes 16 in the fourth quarter and hits four threes
grizzlies never tied the game obviously never took the lead if they never tied it um the blazers
kind of just hold them off and make sure that it's not a real threat uh they win one twenty two one
fourteen drew out a 16 in the fourth quarter he finished with 35 points 11 boards or excuse me
11 assists to go with five boards uh 13 of 19 from the floor eight of 11 from three just an
outrageous night and outrageous 35 points 11 dimes eight three pointers um i'm not going to
look it up and i really don't care but you know that's one of those um the one of those nobody
has done that no one under six foot three born in southern california has ever done something
like this on a wednesday night's in the central time zone um yeah i'm certain that drew holiday
has a lot of i guess NBA players born in southern california but um yeah he like monster uh
awesome game um and he really like he brought them home i also think part of
so the blazers look seventeen threes in the first quarter outrageous number
like i don't care i think there are people who watch the blazers regularly and get upset with how
many threes they shoot i'm not really worried about the overall volume um the math is the math
those are good shots some of the reason that they they're not good shots for the blazers because
they brick them all but but but some of the reason that they only shoot threes like i if they shot four
less threes a game will be fine would be a fine number to me um i i don't really but i'm not i'm not
super worried that they're like top two in the league and three point shots it doesn't that doesn't
bother me all through like just the volume i'm not a box core watcher i'm a game watcher i'd like i
i just think not all threes are created equal if you touch the paint and kick out i don't care if
you shoot a three on every possession but you got to move the defense you have to move you have to
make them guard you and i thought so many of those threes in the first quarter were not moving
you know not making the Memphis guard um you know i i don't um i just it it was just they because
Memphis played small this happens often is that teams that play small they switch one through five
and if you switch one through five you keep everything in front and against a team like the
trailblazers that doesn't have a lot of dudes who can beat you off the dribble keeping everything
in front can sometimes coax guys who don't have a good handle into taking crappy three pointers
swings up can't beat this guy can't beat this guy oh they switch another pick and roll all they
switch another pick oh they switch another pick oh they switch this offball action okay we'll just
jack up a three because you just they don't you don't get that north south attacking and i thought
the blazers really in that first quarter kind of got lured into it. They took 17 threes in the
first quarter another 10 in the second quarter 27 in the first half that's on pace for 54 you
know they take like in the in the middle 40s the game sick but that's way too many um and they
took 16 total in the second half that's a normal number a normal number and they made six of them
you know drew hit four in the third fourth quarter but they stopped jacking up threes and they realize
that also the other thing you can do against a small ball team is attack the rim and they finally
did that in the second half uh i got more thoughts on drew more thoughts on scoot i haven't even
mentioned rob Williams i got a real appreciation for him uh as well Jeremy Graham will talk about
that's plus some news in the uh second segment join me on the other side

situation before it came out on the podcast a full day later that's five bucks a month or
fifty dollars a year to get it get in on the inside or at least close to the inside with me your
boy and the locked on every day or club link in the show notes for this episode okay
real quick just like drew holiday professional basketball game drew a professional basketball game
the blazers were kind of they just they couldn't get any distance they're playing this they're
playing a bad grizzlies team that has uh that has eight dudes eight available players all eight of
them are going to play like it's just um they got Ryan repair uh who was in the starting line of
play thirty two minutes um he did not play particularly well um but he recently signed a 10-day
contract with the grizzlies so like not only do they have eight players one of them is brand
stinking news excuse me uh uh repair signed a two-way contract i believe i said 10-day he was he
his 10-day expired and they gave him a deal for the rest of the year on a two-way contract
congrats to roops on uh getting a landing spot but you know like the the the gris are
they're really young they're incredibly shorthanded they have no size um you know the their best
players i think you could argue tied Jerome and Scotty Pippin are probably their best healthy
players along with you know said your cowards up there although i think he struggled the back half
this season after starting really strong jalen wells is probably the president deserves cred over
coward by a significant margin but like they're missing most of their best players who are even like
who were available the night before and the blazers are scuffling and i think drew just kind of grab
the reins at some point and said like okay but like we we need to be better i'm going to make sure
that we're that we get where we need to go um you know it wasn't right away like you
hit six in the first quarter and eight in the second quarter but that's fourteen a half time um
you know fourteen of their fifty nine like it's like it's on pace for a big game and he had an even
bigger game like i think he really understood the um what was needed from him and kind of delivered
in a way that like a professional basketball player does and drew's been really good recently
you know he had a stretch right when he came back from injury was like oh he's been really bad
and i had an awesome game against the jazz and then he struggled again but last three four games
he just looked like oh yeah this is the drew holiday who helps you know he's not like he's not
the dominating best perimeter defender in the league that he once was but this is the drew holiday
who helps he's absolutely been there i also think some of this like because they struggled and
school struggled in this game he did and he he just it continues to struggle he goes one of six
from three um but but also i think like importantly two of five inside the arc and only got to
the free throw line for two free throws um i just think scoop never got downhill and put pressure
on the rim and i i'm much more worried about him putting pressure on the rim than him shooting
bricks with with that said i recognize that i think he's now five for his last 30 from three like
he's in a he's in a pretty gross funk and he's fouling too much and he's just not playing very well
but like for me the thing that i am actually circling as like i am worried about scoot is just not
put not like not being able to get down hill not being able to say like this team's tiny i'm just
gonna blow past someone to get to the rim and i've talked about in the past that i think scoot has
a quick first step but he doesn't have like that elite elite you know like top tier first step
yeah i i i just maybe you know maybe maybe the i can't really diagnose exactly what's going on
with him he's not playing very well and then i think like part of that is like okay scoot
scoot's not playing really struggling a little bit let's get him off the ball and then drew
how it says like i got to be the steadying presence but when they put in steadying presence so
much of scoot is just like okay run to the corner and scoot off the ball parked in the corner
he might as well just he might as well be just being another country like he's just
right now he's just not a threat as a cutter or anything off the ball he'll space a little bit
and take occasionally take you know pull up jumpers rising up from the corner to the wing and
taking those like you know a foul line extended three pointers but he's not he doesn't like he can
get lost when he gets moved off the ball and then they had to and they had to move him off the ball
by necessity because he was struggling so i think it kind of it feeds itself he's not very good
so they switch who's gonna be the initiator then because he's not very good and he's no longer
the initiator he's put into a role where he doesn't really know how to get his and because he
doesn't know how to get his he ends up being just like a mostly a negative and then he's trying to
okay i'm gonna shoot my way out of this like i'm i'm just gonna i'm gonna if i get it i'm
gonna shoot it because that's my job here um and then it just kind of it feeds itself um
and i don't know that scoot is going to magically bounce back at some point i think he's he's
struggling enough right now that i'm not gonna make any predictions i thought this was a great
opportunity game for him to do exactly that um but scoot's it's been a real bummer as of late um
so i hope uh i hope we see a better version of him at some point to close out the season because it is
uh yeah it's getting it's it's getting it's getting tough it's getting tough for for scooter he's
struggling he is he is absolutely struggling right now okay a little bit of news oh i didn't
respect the Jeremy Grant i i love that he played downhill i love that he played downhill i've
i've kind of teased Jeremy Grant a little bit on the show that it's like the only way he can score
is to draw you know 13 free throw attempts by just like throwing his uh long limbs into someone
and taking long strides and falling over and it's like how many times can he fall over taking a jump shot
in order to get where he wants to go um like i'm just an unlimited an unlimited number of fall
downs to to to earn his 25 points but he was much more assertive he was him and drew play like true
adults in this game we need to win we haven't playing well there's a there's a there's a moment
that's caught on the broadcast that i really loved um under two minutes left in the game and they
give up an offensive rebound and you could hear drew and then Jeremy both echo it we got a box
out we got a box out which is funny because Jeremy Grant's never boxed out in his life
but he did yeah he did have freaking nine boards in this game so shut up Mike 30 points nine
boards for us this Jeremy Grant an adult game um his uh Jeremy Grant's most rebounds out of
a game since December uh let's go most game most rebounds and regulations since December let's go um
rob Williams who who uh had to play a little bit more in this game although he's he's played
he played 23 minutes and 29 seconds i'm pretty sure he's like not allowed to play more than 24
based on how they use him it is what it is they're trying to keep him healthy they have uh he had
10 points and six boards in the first half he had 10 points and five boards in the second half
he was consistent as you could possibly hope for um he blocked three shots he was nine of 12 he
you know he he did what he was supposed to do grabbed five offensive rebounds um i
the rob they needed rob to be special he came in and was special um you know it's like hey we just
need you to be bigger we're going to play a lot of small ball but when you come in we need you to
be big and play big and and act like it and he he did and i thought rob deserves a salute um okay a
bunch of news and then the in the uh third segment we got a new two way player to talk about
we got a little update on the other two way guy we got a senate bill and we got chancy bill
appearing in court okay news to close the show join me on the other side we will get real
newsy with it first though i want to tell you about turbo tax it's tax time for a lot of us the old
way of doing taxes is a lot trying to book an appointment that's not the most convenience sitting
in a waiting room with a stack of papers emailing back and forth and wondering if they really get
your situation but this year you're getting a major upgrade into it turbo tax now has in person
locations nation wide you can meet face-to-face with a real tax expert and your documents get
uploaded straight to your turbo tax app on the spot and just like that you're done that your
turbo tax expert works to get you every dollar you deserve while you get real time notifications
as you go about your day it's the relief of walking in and meeting a real person and walking out
knowing your taxes are being handled right head to turbo tax dot com slash local to find a store
near you and book your appointment still a past first point guard i'm still mic rich man you're
still listening to locked on blazers um blazers announced on Tuesday that they had signed another
two way player they actually had announced the signing of jason canton in conjunction with the
signing of christian blood but that had previously been reported and we talked about it on the show
but the blazers now have a full roster with adding um both or excuse me to new two way players
christian blood a six five two twenty a wing um and now a jason canton a six eight two fifteen kind
of wingy forward um who is a rookie who has spent most of his season this year with the rip city
remix and as i understand it from my my personal remix scout dan shout out to dan in the locked on
discord um can't spend it like a bright spot for the blazers as of late on the year with the with uh
with the rip city with the remix um he's played in 38 games 19 starts he's averaging 12 points
four boards and assist and a steal playing about 26 minutes and i 49% from from the from the floor
39.8% basically round up let's do it 40% from three and 92% free throw shooter um
you know he he played five years in college he he went to start it broadly played a couple
years at indiana state where one year at indiana state he led uh the the Missouri Valley
conference and two point shooting as as uh in his in his second year at uh indiana state a 78% on
twos in the mvc let's go that's right i looked at his basketball reference page uh but that
one stood out to me right away uh and then he finished up his um oh excuse me at at that
that's at indiana state i believe i said i broadly at indiana state um he was he led the mv
he led the mvc in two point shooting his his second season uh and then finished up his collegiate
career texas where he was a reserve um he joins the blazers on a two year two way deal um i doubt
we'll see him like he was not he was uh not on the trip he's with the remix tonight um and uh he
was you know out on on a uh out g league assignment right i i don't think he'll play uh maybe he'll
get on the activist i'm i imagine he'll be on the bench when um when they're back in portland
but like i i don't i can't without something going haywire i don't think he's going to be getting
i getting an opportunity you know you sign him to a two way contract because or two year two way
contract because you wanted to be part of the future so two years that first year is the rest of
the season and then the following next year two way contracts are inherently non guaranteed um
so there's no like actual commitment there's a guarantee date once the season starts but there's
no um there's there's no guarantee right now uh according that's according to uh spot tracks
Keith smith in addition uh christian blood contract is also for two years that's what i had speculated
that they had to be uh christian blood was on the active list tonight he got a dnpcd um
but he did get to wear a jersey and was with the team and he'll he'll continue on he used to
and i imagine um uh he we will see his availability in terms of active list uh depends i guess it
depends on uh whether chris is available to play and any is available to play but uh young
blood you will recall that he had we used up all 50 of his games um playing with okay c so he'd run
out of eligibility with Oklahoma city but he was waived on february six and because and this is
according to uh spokesperson with the blazers was able to confirm this for me because he was
past waivers and cleared waivers and wasn't picked up and then resigned with a new team
he does indeed get his uh his games eligibility resets but they are pro rated for based on when
they are signed so both kent and uh both kent's and young blood have 12 games that they can play
beyond the active list for the blazers for the remainder of the season um we'll see how often
they get on the active list i imagine that matters a lot with just availability obviously i don't
think the blazers will make kale love active unless they're absolutely going to play him um so
because he only has five games left so i think uh for right now um they'll kind of probably
rotate kent and young blood maybe if they just need like a emergency break the glass type of guy
and maybe they think young blood because he's played a lot more NBA minutes this season uh then
kent who is yet to play in the NBA uh then maybe he'll be always the sort of like break the glass
emergency guy okay that's your two-way news um uh shout out to key smith for the reporting on
on two-way contracts he's the best uh former and future guest on the program and always some that
is helpful to me when i have questions um and yeah so that's your that's your your young blood and
your kent news uh sb-1501 that's senate bill 1501 which is the arena funding bill that's going to
raise 365 million dollars of public money plus additional money that will be probed that part of
the bill or we'll get additional money from the county as well as the city of Portland in order
to uh raise about six hundred million dollars uh or like create six hundred million dollars of
bond money for uh to renovate the motor center that bill passed to the senate and heads to the house
governor tino koteca is already central sign the bill this thing is is it it's on its way um it's
as as mentioned uh sort of at when the session started that if this passed the sort of first level
of the senate bill and again uh of the senate and got like through that first first round of voting as
as it was intended the momentum was going to be there i think the momentum is there i think this is
where we're headed it was always inevitable the public money would pay for the blazers um
arena in some form or fashion and now we know the former fashion that's uh that is official
it's not a done deal because it has to you know be signed by the governor and and all that but
we're getting there and then they will have to negotiate uh with with uh tom dundin once this
like this this is the mechanism to create the public money and then they will negotiate a deal with
tom dundin once he takes over the blazers and um fried just give him more money probably
fried just say like yeah cool what else do you want big guy okay um speaking of the blazers
and court and negotiating your boy um i get like the way it works head coach of the portland
trailblazer's chauncy billups was in court um in new york today and this is according to
reporting from alex shifra for an office sports who was uh in in the courtroom
now shifra a uh used to write for the athletic and now writes for front office sports um it was
federal prosecutors um they are met with uh they held a trial or they were in court um it's for
with thirty one defendants who were arrested in october in relations at the same thing that
that billus was arrested for for the roles and they written a rigged poker ring um it's
they're in eastern district of new york here we go it's the mafia side gamb uh fixed gambling um and
they are reportedly according to shifra expected to offer plea agreements to um a dozen defendants
in the coming days and um quote have had productive talks with at least nine more in optimistic
the case can avoid going to trial so that would be like at least there you're talking about
twenty one of the thirty one defendants um we'll get a plea deal um before this thing were to go
to trial in the fall um chauncy had previously pled not guilty as i understand that that is a
typical approach even if you were eventually going to read a reach a plea agreement that uh
it did in your initial arrangement you'd say not guilty higher lawyer whatever whatever um
according to shifra you know uh just as they do i this doesn't explain to the story but i can
picture it because so can you uh bill ups walking out the courtroom with his attorney and say
uh blah blah blah blah you know like the the crowd like do you have any comment on this and then
you just walk to the car as you can hear the yelling and the photos flashing and the flash bulbs
and all those things i guess you don't really hear the flash bulbs anymore that's kind of old school
but you know what i'm talking about like the screaming as a as someone walks from the courtroom to
their to their car and in chauncy's case what one would imagine a big black SUV would tend to
windows um but i like this isn't not particularly meaningful uh in terms of this is more like
procedural but um and uh you'll remember that i had a a a a department of justice expert a former
a former member of the darlin but justice at a legal expert on the show who had predicted that like
this the way that the case initially read that it was appointed in the direction of taking a plea
deal uh bill ups obviously does not have to do that he can go to trial if he wants and he has a big
powerful attorney to to defend him if he if he chooses to go that route um i i think the only
thing that would be meaningful is that if he does um reach a plea deal that probably just
automatically voids his contract without any mess but here's the actual trick um there's going to be
a new owner um there's a pretty there's a reasonable chance that if there had been an owner
in place that would not like a not lame duck owner in place they would have already just
fired chancey bilips and they would say hey instead of the acting head coach which is what they're
calling uh what the what they're calling to you i was putter he would be named the interim head
coach but the alina state says we're not that is someone else's problem we're not going to deal
with the legal mess that is because now bilips is money is going into escrow and so like conceivably
if he were to be found not guilty he could get his money that he was owed or like sue for it or
whatever it is um i think instead it is what's most most likely to happen is done and we'll just say
you're fired and again they'll pay the money that he's owed into escrow but eventually if he's
found guilty or or or reasonably deal um then he would not be given that money and the money that
exists in escrow would would be returned uh to the blazers i don't know who would be returned to
would be returned to the alina state would be returned to dumb dun dun that's for someone else
to worry about i don't care it's not my money but just in terms of tracking the news um bilips
and we don't know that's the reporting here that's key um neither alkshifer or or um
any of the other quick reports that i scanned um have an inkling weather bilips will reach a
plea deal but certainly that will be big headline capital news because uh that's who people care
about in this case is bilips and daemon jones um and some other people who got caught up in the mess
that's going to do it for today's program so what we do five days a week revigate podcasts
