Juliana Stratton Wins Democratic Primary for US Senate

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton has won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate

seat in Illinois.

She pulled ahead of her main challenger, Congressman Raja Krishnamorthy, with about 90% of the

votes counted on Tuesday night.

This sets her up as the favorite to take the seat in November.

Earlier this week, Stratton trailed in the polls but made a lay push thanks to a key endorsement

and $12 million in support from Illinois.

Governor JB Pritzker, her bold call to abolish immigration and customs enforcement, stood

out against her opponent's milder approach.

In her victory speech in Chicago, Stratton celebrated the win as proof of listening to voters.

Turnout was huge for her primary, topping 1.1 million votes and on track to beat the

2004 race when Barack Obama ran.

She's expected to defeat her Republican rival in the general election, stepping in for

retiring Senator Dick Durbin.

At 81 years old, Durbin is leaving after five terms.

If elected, Stratton would mark history as the sixth black woman in the Senate over its

237 years.

She would join Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester, making three black women serving

at the same time for the first time.
