Contractors in Juneau are racing against time to reinforce the temporary flood wall along the Mendenhall River, following last years massive glacial outburst flood. The wall, made of HESCO barriers filled with sand, narrowly prevented hundreds of homes from being flooded when water reached over forty-eight thousand cubic feet per second. Now, theyre stacking the barriers higher and adding boulders to protect the banks. The city has allocated five million dollars for phase one repairs, while the U.S. Army Corps is covering nineteen million dollars for phase two, extending the wall upstream and downstream. The Army Corps has also shipped forty-one big pumps to manage any water buildup behind the wall, designed for a rare fifty-year flood. The project is expected to be completed by mid-July, with the Army Corps briefing city leaders on Monday.
