1:34
Welcome back everybody.
1:35
This is going to be a fun, what Jesse Newell joins us from the athletic, timely, timely
1:40
piece here because as we go through all the machinations of this NFL Draft scenario,
1:46
just to kind of lay it out for us and I very much appreciate you.
1:49
We're going to cover two of them in depth because I think they're the most likely in the
1:52
things that I've been brainstorming the most about, but you've got a couple of the emergency
1:59
So I like that you cover that.
2:00
Thanks for coming on.
2:02
Thanks for having me.
2:04
Just the perfect timing so we can set up the podcast.
2:05
But yeah, I labeled those appropriately, I think, on someone like the YOLO route or
2:09
the Oh No Rip Quarterout, so maybe not as likely, but I don't think we can completely rule
2:16
And at this point, honestly, I don't know if anybody knows what they're going to do in
2:19
So I think they're all viable.
2:21
But the one that I think with the recent news, I think, is probably leaning now.
2:26
I had already heard about room being kind of maybe moving down or being more accurately
2:30
pegged around 10 with the chiefs, obviously having interest.
2:34
Now that looks like even more of a certainty.
2:36
And I think if he's there, they grab him, do you see any reason where they wouldn't?
2:41
Yeah, I do, but I see reasons why they would.
2:46
And I think, you know, that's sort of the topic of this year's draft, isn't it, that
2:51
this year in the top 10 picks, usually you're thinking, okay, what pro bowl or what perfect
2:55
tape am I going to throw on?
2:56
And this year, it's like, well, this is a good player, but this is wrong with him or this
3:02
And so I go back to a piece I wrote last year about Brett Beach and the chiefs and how they
3:06
have this collaborative nature when it comes to their scouts, when it comes to their coaching
3:09
staff, when it comes to him.
3:11
And he talked about one of his first weeks in the office as GM of the chiefs.
3:15
He went down to Spagnolo's office and Spag said, hey, here's what I like on my deep
3:20
Here's what I like from my linebackers and you have the measurements and you have the
3:23
And we know over time that Steve's like, oh, it's sort of followed along with what that
3:27
You have a long arm blank.
3:28
He loves that length up front.
3:30
And so there are things with Ruben Bain where you say the arm length, the length overall,
3:35
it's like, this doesn't fit with a Steve's Magnolo defense.
3:37
It doesn't fit with potentially what his perfect fit is.
3:41
Having said that, the things you like about Ruben Bain is he's stouting against the run.
3:45
He shows production on film.
3:46
And then he said it at the combine when I was there in Indianapolis, he said he thought
3:49
he killed the chiefs interview.
3:51
You know, you get 12 to 15 minutes with those guys in person and he seems like a highly
3:56
We know Spags loves to drop those guys in coverage.
3:58
Have those guys know other people's positions.
4:00
So I think there's enough there that you can talk yourself into the pick, even if it's
4:04
not the perfect top 10 pick.
4:05
I mean, maybe Steve's Magnolo isn't banging down the door to get Ruben Bain, but I think
4:09
you look at this and say, for the team need that the chiefs have and potentially what he
4:14
I think you could definitely say justification wise, hey, this is a player to bring in.
4:17
This is a player that could thrive in the chiefs defense.
4:20
Yeah, I think so too.
4:21
And we'll talk about the flip side in a little bit.
4:24
But the second pairing there, as we look at, if that happens first, you crossed off as
4:30
significant knee and I think that's smart.
4:32
When you get down to it, I know you had identified what I think Dane did in his overall seven
4:38
rounder mock with going next at wide receiver with Denzel Boston, who's a fit that I think
4:44
could work out, but I don't think that that's a great combination.
4:48
Did you have trepidation about that or is there anybody else at that position or otherwise
4:53
that you personally think might be a better fit?
4:55
So what I did with the specific specific mock draft was I kind of pushed into the first
5:01
mock draft what that would have happened or just had one go out and then got to 29 and
5:06
saw what was left basically.
5:08
And I know Boston's been mocked at the chiefs quite a bit and there's some trepidation
5:11
there about a true outside receiver.
5:14
The chiefs usually go for the speedy guys.
5:16
How much would they use this guy?
5:18
I just heard a pretty good conversation from Meena Cimes and Ben Solak on ESPN and they
5:21
were going to receivers and talking about how, you know, the kind of the conversation
5:27
between outside guys and inside guys, what did the chiefs want here and potentially,
5:32
you know, how would this fit in and their talk about somebody's outside guys was interesting
5:36
I thought, which is they can be an impact without having to be the guy.
5:41
So maybe like the Mike McIleman people out there, if you bring my Kyleman in, he's got
5:46
Like, you have to feed him to ball.
5:47
You have to make him a focal point of the offense.
5:49
Would the chiefs want to do that with Rishi Rice and Xavier Worthy and Taikwan Thornton?
5:53
Now, if you get a guy like Boston, if you put him on the outside, could he impact your
5:57
team with three or four catches of game and be a part of what you have already?
6:00
I think it's a side beam argument.
6:02
I mean, Andy, we know they bred Beach, Andy, they tend toward these shorter speedy
6:07
We know that they do that.
6:08
They love their yards after catch guys.
6:11
You know, he's coached to you in the past and that they would figure out a way to work.
6:14
And for the chiefs, I've heard so much of the national debate about like they could use
6:17
some diversity in the room.
6:18
They could use something a little bit different.
6:20
So I'm not sold completely on Boston being the chiefs guy.
6:23
And I'm not sure what they think about him specifically in the building.
6:26
But what I would say is a player like that I could see kind of like what Meena and Benjamin
6:30
were saying like three to four catches helps you contribute and can help you in a way
6:34
where he doesn't have to have the volume.
6:36
I could definitely see him helping in that way and getting what home is a different option
6:38
than what he has right now.
6:40
I like that as well.
6:41
And spreading the ball around is a tenant of when this offense is cooking the most in
6:45
So it makes sense to me, but that's not the only scenario for the one that I'm actually
6:51
It's coming up next.
6:55
The NFL draft is here where preparation meets opportunity and every decision matters.
7:00
It's all about being ready when your moment comes.

8:37
Just make sure you check out Jesse over at the athletic, I know we referred to him enough
8:40
that you probably know that already, but I thought I'd say it out loud.
8:44
This is my more interesting or my preferred scenario here and I'm going to tell you why
8:50
because you hit it earlier, but this is a scenario number two, I'm just going to call
8:53
number two folks, you got to go read the article to see that.
8:56
It comes down to you take the best receiver that's there.
8:59
And I know in your mock in this scenario, you had a carnal tape that a lot of folks have
9:03
mocked to the chiefs as well.
9:05
I personally like Tyson a little bit more.
9:08
So you could swap in whoever you want there.
9:10
The wider receiver isn't really the focus of this.
9:12
It's that edges are probably gone.
9:14
And the wider receiver is from your point of view, do you think it is the next best position
9:18
group here at nine that is likely to be available?
9:22
I mean, Ed Drupshaw and receiver, it kind of hits on both things that you want, which
9:25
is it's the premium position.
9:27
You get the potential surplus value at the top of the draft and it's also two of the positions
9:31
we know that the chiefs need the most.
9:33
And so we'll talk to Brad Beats later this week in our pre draft conversation and learn
9:38
But there have been some whispers out there about how the chiefs potentially like Jordan
9:41
Tyson and even with the injury limitations, we know that last year, Josh Simmons, they
9:46
took a guy that had some injury question marks with him and it's turned out well so far.
9:51
But it's not going to be very likely or very often in the Patronons era that the chiefs
9:56
are going to get the crack at the number one receiver in the draft.
9:59
And this could happen this year.
10:00
So yeah, whether it's Tate, whether it's Tyson, whether it is my guy, lemon, a guy that
10:05
could fit around in some space and be able to get some yards after catch for you.
10:09
Yeah, that's an opportunity that chiefs won't have very often and potentially could have
10:12
in this particular draft.
10:13
So that really goes back to their evaluation, their scouts and we know as I just spoke
10:17
about earlier, you know, Brett Beach really trusts his guys, his lieutenants, his scouts,
10:21
they really bank on what they believe about guys.
10:23
And so their evaluations of those guys are going to be very interesting.
10:25
And I think that's here at the top.
10:26
You kind of can talk to yourself and any of those three.
10:28
And so it was Tyson, you know, wouldn't surprise me.
10:31
The question becomes, I know I'm going to jump over to another scenario, but could you
10:34
trade back and still get Tyson?
10:35
I don't know the question.
10:36
And would somebody want to jump up to that number nine spot?
10:38
I don't know that either.
10:39
I've been doing that quite a bit before raisins in a mock draft world.
10:44
So I'm 100% with you.
10:46
But what this opens up is what I think fits what you were talking about earlier the best.
10:51
When you take a look at the edge group and you want to fit that list that spags handed
10:55
to them on day three or whatever it was.
10:57
It comes down to playing the run first, playing with power, being able to be multiple in
11:02
your front and attack from any position and have decent length.
11:07
The guy that fits all of those things best in this draft class is TJ Parker.
11:11
And it's great that you hit on it because I've been banging the bell for him for quite
11:16
So was it about the fit or was he best available when you got to this point 29?
11:21
What made you go that direction?
11:26
You kind of zoom it through and see what's available for you.
11:29
And, you know, to me, if you kind of look at these tears like you're talking about here,
11:34
it seems like a lot of the receivers will mostly the top tier will be gone by the 29th
11:40
There'll still be some adressors left.
11:41
If you take an adressor there, then it seems like defensive tackles will still be available
11:46
So I mean, in a perfect world, if the chief could slot this out.
11:49
If you could go receiver, adressor, you're like, again, that would fit perfectly in your
11:53
system like a Parker would do, and then get to defensive tackle at 40.
11:56
I mean, that's the way they would draw it up and take it 10 times out of 10.
12:00
The problem is with the NFL draft, you cannot control what happens in front of you.
12:03
And that's why, you know, Brad Pitt does a good job coming into the off season or going
12:08
through the off season.
12:09
I'm trying to cover his base needs so that he doesn't have to force himself into, okay,
12:13
no matter what happens.
12:14
I've got to get an adressor.
12:15
You know, the old drafting movie.
12:16
I got to have the quarterback at number whatever.
12:18
So the chiefs are flexible there and they remain flexible.
12:21
They can trade down.
12:23
But yeah, probably in a perfect world, if they do like one of those receivers at the top,
12:27
we talk about one of those three if they have their eye up potentially on one of those
12:30
three guys, you can go receiver, you can get adressor, that 29.
12:33
So I kind of a sweet spot to take a guy you want and then 40.
12:35
You're looking at defensive tackle, potentially getting one of those top three guys off the board
12:40
Well, I like the sound of that last thing.
12:43
If you had your guess, which one of these scenarios is what happens?
12:47
It's a great question.
12:49
I think the chiefs more than any other year would be motivated trade back.
12:53
I think more than any other year, they will not get calls to trade up for other teams to
12:58
I think that any other year, they would be much happier with the ninth pick.
13:02
And this year isn't potentially that.
13:04
But I think that can talk themselves into Rubin Bain for sure.
13:08
And I think the receiver thing is tricky because it depends who's available and it depends
13:12
on if there's anybody who's willing to trade back and how much you want to sort of risk
13:16
that sort of thing.
13:18
I would be stunned at this point.
13:19
We'll talk to Brad Beachler this week.
13:20
So we'll see if anything changes.
13:22
I would be stunned if their number nine pick is not receiver or edge rusher.
13:26
I will say that at this part of the draft and from there, you sort of go with the scenario
13:30
If it's not the yellow scenarios or the other crazy things I wrote in the article, the
13:33
people can check out.
13:34
But I would say Rubin May, Jr., one of those top three receivers, I would anticipate
13:37
that's going to be the first pick for the chiefs in the NFL draft of the number nine
13:41
You heard it here, folks.
