Ken Stands Alone Picking the Browns to Beat Jacksonville

About this episode

Ken Carman explains why he's picking the Browns to win their season opener against Jacksonville, even as he admits Deshaun Watson is the biggest flaw in his own logic. He digs into just how negative Browns fans have gotten heading into the season, arguing it's not even about wanting a tank anymore, some fans genuinely dislike Watson and want him gone regardless of the record. Anthony Lima pushes back with a more optimistic take on what a good showing from the offensive line, receivers and new-look defense could mean, while Ken braces for the inevitable pile-on if the pick backfires.

Get no fee. That's the main thing. When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than know what they were doing in that show. I wasn't who I needed to be, no for my team. Every year I'm focused on how can I be a pro ball, how can I be an all pro, how can I get this at the third person, just focusing on what getting this one and no, getting this first win going out there and winning. Even during games I'll be focused on how can we win this game and say just focus on this one player. All right, you guys can do this, but that's where I'm going to leave it now. That's where I'm going to leave it. That's where I'm leaving it because I'm telling you right now if they go out there and they get smashed on Sunday, it's going to turn it. Well, at least we got a raw raw speeches didn't we, Ken? Well, hey, that's okay. You got your pick and you got your raw raw speeches and I'm going to go, no, no, no, no, I'm not walking into that guy. I was focused on himself and one guy is focused on his team and I heard the same thing. I was focused on his team. It was over in Brea right now. I heard the other ones. Transit, Atlantic or Trans-Pacific.

You better bet your ass. He's 30,000 feet above your head. You bastard. Well, he's not on this side of the world yet. I have no idea where the hell they're flying at over. But uh, yeah, midway right now. Yeah. They got them supersonic jets yet so they can put teams in London. No, Ken. That's a whole thing. Yeah, just, yeah, as Owen noticed, one guy's talking about making the team better. The other guy talked about making himself better. But if I go any further on a team that I picked to win five games this year, it's going to turn into a Wellys. We got a raw raw speeches, Kenny. And I'm playing the long game on that one, but don't think we didn't notice. Well done by Owen. Well done by everybody. Hi, how are you? You doing good? It's going to be great when Versa gets a couple of sacks in the opener. If he gets two sacks in the opener, well, if he gets two sacks in the opener and they win, I'm going to be pretty excited. Because I've been getting harassed for nearly 24 hours now.

I was down stairs and Jay, who is one of the guys who run the convenience store. He goes, I picked the bronze on son ego. That's great. Now don't go saying that publicly because if you do, you're going to be getting killed for it. It's like I've been he's laughing. He goes, well, I got no last 24 hours. I just been getting killed. Just getting killed, which some Jacksonville fans found it and I actually had a pleasant exchange. I don't think your coach is bad. I don't think your team's bad whatsoever. You guys just went Tony besides. If I'm going to pick, no, it was actually Maurice Jones true. If I, Kenna McCartell came after me, it was crazy. This is, guys, this is maybe the one time I can pick the bronze this year. The one game I can maybe pick the bronze. There is healthiest they're going to be. So you know what? I'm going to pick them because you can't say I've been picking about the, picking against the bronze all year, which is not a reason to pick the bronze, but I'm going to pick the bronze because of it. And yes, my history is blamed right on me, but I'm going, I'm looking at some of the

replies on the video yesterday that Keith put out. I'm going, well, what I didn't necessarily call my shot, but I picked the bronze to win fine because you got to make a choice, don't you? But the second thing of it is, is that go, you know, they're both professional football teams. The Jacksonville Jaguars could come out flat. It tends to be a sloppy game. Hopefully we're not a sloppy. If we're not a sloppy, we can run the ball with any decency, which means that Deshan Watson is going to have to be way better than what he was in the, against the third team of the Buffalo Bills. My God, this is going to end up making me look real bad. I don't care. I don't care. If we can do any of those things, then we can, we can win the game. And it'd be nice. There's been plenty of bad teams like the Las Vegas Raiders last year who started out one and a half against a team that played in the Super Bowl. So I, I understand we haven't won an opener with a new head coach since Bud Carson. I got it. Well, I want to highlight today yesterday. Those, well, could you not? I mean, it was the great day. It was such a throwback. It was Chris Burman and Tom Jackson.

And I don't even know if it was called NFL prime time, but it was like some, some earlier version of that. And it was awesome. But I, I need to know if anybody else is picking because this is as. This is as negative as I've seen Brown's fans to start a season and 15 years on the fan. I mean that. Well, what percentage of the fan base things are starting the worst quarterback? Oh, well, it's not that they, so how many teams, how many teams do that? It's not that there's some way we've been on the air when we felt that they, they've started a worse quarterback. It's that they openly dislike that quarterback that they're starting. That's true. Yeah, both, both. They think he's worse and they don't like him and they root against him and they want him to be out of a Brown's uniform. And that's where I start to think I go, are there people? They consider themselves Brown's fans. And it's not like we've been taught like don't say tank, don't say tank, don't say tank. I don't think it's even about tanking. They don't like this guy. They think he's a waste of time.

He has been a waste of time, by the way. They don't like this guy. He's been a waste of time and the sooner his time with this team comes to an end, the better. And I do believe there are die in the wool Brown's fans who will go to games in 2026 and 27 and 28 and so on and so forth. And they love this football team and they have Brown stuff all over their house and they have Brown stuff in their cars. And they're hoping this guy goes out there and he fails because they want to be done with it. And if they feel that way, because it's going to end this, this charade sooner, I really can't say anything to defend the guy other than, well, you're a bet. Are they a bad fan? Because they've been through a lot of crap for how many years? So I can't necessarily call them a bad fan. But they still consider themselves Brown fans. I can't. You called me at times. I've called you a bad fan when I've rooted for the Browns to lose the end of the season or to get rid of a coach. That was at times. It's a bouncing organization and tire structure.

But well, I still can't bring myself to do those things. But this is different, man. I just think in past, I think they go, we need to be better. They didn't like how things were going with Kevin's to fans get the end or how things were going with with Hugh Jackson. They openly dislike this man. There is such a difference before there was, I don't think this guy does a good job. We got to get rid of him. Now it's not. They just don't think he doesn't do a good job. They don't like him. They want him gone. If I pick them to win, see that's one more game that he gets. He would definitely start the next week. They won it over. Especially if he looks good. This will be an interesting predicament for Browns fans. I know the way he's talked about in this town, people have eliminated the possibility that he's good or could be good or could even have a good game. Now listen to the afternoon show. They make it sound like he couldn't even walk out there from the sideline to the huddle.

All the play get the play off and complete a pass. He can't be that bad. He wouldn't be starting if he was that bad, right? Find out. He may very well be that way. They would just start the other guy if he was that bad, right? I would tend to agree with you, but you keep asking me right. You want me to affirm you because you have questions yourself. I do have major questions. You like to play therapist with me. Let me give you some therapy over here. You seem to be asking me a lot of things to try to affirm you because I think you feel the same way that a lot of fans do. You ain't going to pick the bronze on Sunday, Yari. No. No, why aren't you going to pick the bronze? I mean, a big part of it is the quarterback. Exactly. So a lot of people think I'm lying to myself when I pick the bronze or I'm just going back on a year of being a homer. Yeah, I know what I am. I'm not going to sit there and deny what I am. I'm not denying that. I'm not all of a sudden, Mr. Hardass down the line radio guy. I'm not doing that at all. Yes, I want the teams here to win and I think you do too. But this is the one game I know I can pick with some confidence that they can win. So I'm going to pick up.

Well, the other side of it that I keep coming back to is if they looked good, if they look like this well-oiled machine in a way that the Rams didn't certainly in the way that the Seahawks and the Patriots did not look three out of the four teams in the opener already. If they look good, think about all the conversations. We are going to be having on Monday about the receivers, the offensive line, the defense, Jared verse, the new defensive coordinator. Like we are going to be feeling really good about a lot of things. And yeah, you might have to swallow it when it comes to, oh boy, are we going to be in for more games with Deshan Watson? But it also comes with all the other stuff that you're going to be feeling good about. And I think for a week, Brown's fans should be okay with that. There are several flaws that people find in my logic. They just think the team's bad. Okay. All right. The biggest flaw that I can find in my logic is that I don't think he's a very good quarterback.

And I do think a lot of people think he has to play very well for them to win games. And I think in week two, he'll have to play well. I think in week one, I think it's a wild card game. I think it's a crap shoot. Well, can Tom Mothin mitigate that? I really can. That's his job. That's his job is to mitigate that. Yeah. Can he take the onus off of Deshan Watson and not put the entire game and the fortunes of the team on his back? You'll have to. And that's why not turning the ball over is so definitely important for this team. Like you watched Jacksonville two years ago, mitigated his unmitigated disaster. I know we're saying that word all the time. Turnovers like crazy. Last year, they eliminated a lot of the turnovers like Trevor Lawrence had 4,000 yards and 29 touchdowns and 12 picks. It's a good, it's a really good year. Don't give you wrong, but it's not a my home's really good year. It's not an Allen really good year. It was a really good year. Part of the reason that helped them to get the 13 and 4 is that they eliminated turnovers. If we could just protect the F and football and not turn the ball over and give ourselves a chance to keep our defense off the field and not give them a short field by doing stupid

things, then we're going to have ourselves a chance to win. At least week one, yes. Anthony, when you ask can Todd mitigate that or eliminate that? Are you talking about Todd, the offensive play color or Todd the head coach? Cause I don't know if those are two different things right now. We're the same. We haven't explained. Can you can you can you explain that five minutes explain that five minutes. I want to know if there's anybody else who really thinks the Browns are going to win our Fulman on Island here. If I'm on an island, that's fine. I'm not taking anything back. I'm not going to let I'm not going to succumb to peer pressure. I'm going to tell you right now, I probably won't pick him next week and I probably won't pick him the rest of the year. I think there's one game I can pick him for and I'm picking him this week. 216474 0092 and if you think I'm dumb, welcome to the club of everybody else on will give you your membership cards by the end of the day.
