On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe recaps Kentucky basketball's win over the LSU Tigers. Garrison was massive for Kentucky basketball and their energy in the second half, in what ended up being a weird back and forth game. Does Mark Pope's squad have another win in the tank? Can Collin Chandler and Denzel Aberdeen step up after a weak performance vs LSU?

I'm your host Lance Dawn on today's episode of the show.
We are going to be recapping Kentucky basketball's 87-82 win over LSU in the first round
of the SEC tournament, a very weird back and forth game.
Some bad vibes heading into the second half and Brandon Garrison pulls Kentucky out
of the fire of all the players to find a way to force a Kentucky win.
Basically, Brandon Garrison knocking down a couple of threes, showing some effort, showing
some fight.
Can the cats keep it rolling?

What a crazy performance from Brandon Garrison.
What a wild back and forth affair really quickly before we dive into that.

Go join the bracket pool while we're breaking this one down here for you again, 87 82 is
the final score.
And like I've mentioned a few times already, there is no other place to start in this contest.
Then with Brandon freaking Garrison, I have criticized and been so frustrated as you have
with Brandon Garrison's effort all season long.
The expectation this off season was for Brandon Garrison to become a more consistent product
and be an athletic forward that Kentucky can rely upon consistently because of his energy
athleticism and effort.
That has not been there all season long.
And we have been really, really frustrated with one of the more veteran players on this
team, just simply not stepping up the way that we expected him to.
And in this game, LSU starts to make a little bit of a run in the second half.
They get up by one Kentucky needs an answer 11 freaking points from Brandon Garrison in
the second half.
He finished with 17 points on the day.
He was Kentucky second leading score knocked down those two triples.
And I was I got up out of my seat laughing after that second three pointer.
You see a couple go in from your five man and you if you're the opponent, you're looking
at it going.
We might have a hard time in this one boys.
It was effort.
It was it was defense.
It was touch around the paint.
It was focus and intense intense focus and care for what he was doing in the decisions
he was making.
I thought Garrison played a very good game and he deserved his flowers in this one alongside
those 17 points on seven of nine shooting.
He also had five boards and two assists in 26 minutes of play.
Also if I'm not mistaken, he had a couple of blocks and steals as well.
He was Kentucky's leader in plus minus today at plus 11.
It was a little bit of everything and a game Kentucky desperately needed had he not been
on the floor and he was listed as probable heading into this game.
So he's dealing with some sort of injury possibly had he not been ready to go for this game.
Malachai Marino.
I don't think would have been able to handle Michael Nooko for this entirety for the entirety
of this contest.
In just 12 minutes today, Malachai Marino minus five had four points missed his only shot
and he just simply did not look prepared against a player like Nooko.
He did not have the wingspan to contest shots consistently from Nooko.
He did not have the athleticism to keep up with him does not have the vertical.
Marino as nicely as I can say, it just doesn't have that athleticism that you're looking
for out of a five star freshman.
I mean, there's a lot of things that that marino does really well.
Super high floor has been efficient for Kentucky overall has been inconsistent at times with
this touch around the paint has improved as a free throw shooter as he goes for four from
the charity stripe here today had three offensive rebounds.
Yes.
He has to be a better defender and I don't know if he can be because of his physical limitations
against personnel like this.
And so having Brandon Garrison step in and be that athletic force, be somebody that can
keep up with Nooko, be somebody that can contest shots more effectively at the rim.
That was what Kentucky needed again had Garrison not been able to go in this game.
I really don't think Kentucky wins this one because what the value that he was providing
on both ends of the floor.
Speaking of providing value on both ends of the floor, welcome back, Cam Williams, who
knocked down his first three pointer of the afternoon.
The second three pointer was in desperation as a shot clock expired.
And then the third one was a set play where he got open.
He just was a little too strong on it.
I really like what I'm seeing out of Cam now that he's back.
I don't necessarily know what he's playing at in terms of percentage of health, but he
played 17 minutes today.
And he was positive in terms of plus minus at a steal and assist a couple of boards and
those three points.
I will continue to say it.
And I think Mark Pope would agree if he has not already in the post game press conference.
Kentucky, if they're fatigued, if they need a nap, if they're just one of the most tired,
exhausted teams in the SEC, Cam Williams can provide a little bit of a breather for some
of these starters and actually provide some value on both ends of the floor consistently.
That is what I'm looking for from Cam Williams.
And he didn't have to fill up the stat sheet today.
He was just seeing a three go in, being a part of the momentum, being a part of this
team defense, which was frankly, atrocious for the large portion of this game.
That's what we needed out of a bench player like Cam and he doesn't have to be a world
beater.
And frankly, I'm happy with the results that he gave us today.
The bench stepped up in a really big way today.
And yes, I know Aberdeen and Otega combined for 16 and 23, but you have to give credit
to somebody like Mohamed Diabate, who finished with seven points and seven boards.
I'll also excuse me, Jasper Johnson in his three minutes today had two points and was
a net neutral effectively.
And this one, he, I believe, had what was, what was basically a near turnover or was
a turnover.
Excuse me.
And he got like switched in the lane one time for an, for an easy layup from an opponent
who just, I believe number eight for Ellis, you just cleared him out of the way because
it was just a bad switch.
He did feed the ball to Diabate, who scored immediately on the following possession.
Also Jasper had the floater of his own.
So net positive, net neutral will take that anything you can get from your bench that's
not negative.
We will absolutely take that.
I thought the bench was big for the cats today, really, really, really big.
I'm trying to find here bench points, yeah, 29 of their 87 for the cats.
If, if Garrison didn't play, man, we would be looking at this team a whole lot differently
right now.
We would be looking at this team a whole lot differently by any means necessary, by any
means necessary at this point, where we don't care about style points.
We don't care about margin of victory.
All we care about is did Kentucky win.
And they're going to need a should to show a lot more fight and intensity on the defensive
end tomorrow against LSU.
Let's talk about the dark side of this matchup because Kentucky didn't cover in this game.
They didn't play good defense and they need some key players to step up in much, much
bigger ways tomorrow.
Let's break all of that down here for you in just a moment before we do it, though.
I want to tell you guys about our friends over at Mazda.
I'm Clea Butler, host of Locked On Women's Basketball.
And this is Mazda's women's basketball snapshot celebrating the work no highlight reel
can ever capture.
This is one its first ever SEC championship on Sunday, beating South Carolina 78 to 61
and snapping the game costs three year run as SEC tournament champions.
In the big 10 championship, UCLA dominated Iowa 96 to 45.
The 51 point margin is the most lopsided title game in big 10 tournament history.
With a resume that includes 18 quad won wins and one of the toughest schedules in the country,
UCLA is making a serious push for the overall number one seed.
But Yukon has held that spot all season and remains the nation's only unbeaten team.
These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on.
The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time.
Mazda puts that same drive into every detail, wins to find the moment, putting in the work,
that defines you.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.

Thank you guys who are in the live chat.
We will get to questions and comments here in just a second, but I do want to focus here
for a minute on some of the negative aspects of this game.
Otega away.
I think well, actually, I'll play I'll start positive.
Otega away played his hard out.
He played 39 freaking minutes in this game.
He got one minute of rest, 23 points, eight of 19 shooting did not make a three eight
rebounds, three assists in a steal.
He was plus seven.
I mean, honestly, some of the shots, I'm not the biggest fan of, but he was clutch.
I thought in this game, I thought he counted when it mattered most and 23 points is nothing
to scoff at to go along with eight boards when you're playing 39 minutes.
I mean, he played his hard out.
The guard defense today as a whole was really bad.
It was really bad.
Lucky continued to lose shooters.
They continued to poorly fight through screens.
They were too slow to get around screens for Max McKinnon and other LSU drivers.
And it was just really bad communication, really bad effort from start to finish.
And that has to change tomorrow against Missouri.
It has to change.
Dinsel Aberdeen has to be more energetic, more present, fighting through these screens.
And I understand you start to talk about fatigue.
And how 37 minutes can pile up on you quick, especially if you're playing the majority
of if not the entirety of the first half, which Aberdeen played 18 of those 20 minutes.
Like it's going to wear on you in the second period of play when you have to fight through
those hard screens, frankly, Kentucky's also got to be better at setting harder screens
as well.
Like that is a huge issue.
Garrison, again, for all of the good that he did today, could have been a little bit stronger
in that department.
Same for Marino.
Maybe it's part of the offense.
I still think they should be setting harder, more consistent screens, but to go back to
the defense again, like, look, I can take a six to 13 performance.
I can take a one of five shooting performance.
I can take a one of five shooting performance from Chandler to you can't get lost.
There were a couple of LSU threes in this game.
And they could have had a few more that they just didn't knock down because Colin Chandler
just gets lost on defense at six foot five 200 plus pounds.
You should not be getting lost on defense with the athleticism in speed that he possesses.
It just simply should not be happening.
He has to be a more disciplined player that stays home, both of them and and sticks with
their man off ball.
It has to be a more consistent theme for Kentucky.
If they want to make a run in March, yes, what these three guards away Aberdeen and Chandler
do on the offensive end is super crucial, especially as we get into the NCAA tournament.
But as far as defense goes, you can survive a poor shooting performance, which Kentucky
had today.
If you are giving more intense effort on defense and actually controlling the amount of open
looks that an opponent can get Kentucky has the ability to do that.
They just do not show that effort consistently.
And I would love to see Chandler Aberdeen away all stick their nose in a little bit more
aggressively and give that extra want to that extra fire there to make it easier on
themselves.
Honestly, on the other end of the floor, because if they're up big, then they can kind
of slow things down, get the best possible shot.
And honestly, I think they've been most effective here late in the season when they run sets
like that.
It would help this team out a ton if they could spread the wealth around a little bit.
And then also fight really hard on defense.
It just gives them a lot more leeway and a lot more room.
I mean, at one point Kentucky was up in this game by 12 77 65, but less than seven minutes
to go, you got to find a way to hold that.
You have to find a way to hold that part of the reason why this wasn't a chaotic end to
this one.
What was just despite the reviews for flagrant flagrant fowls and whatnot.
This because LSU missed a lot of threes in this game.
They missed nine and the second half they went O of D O of nine from deep in the second
period.
And again, a lot of these a lot of these were were open a lot of the a lot of these shots
were open.
You got to be more disciplined tomorrow against Missouri, you got to be more disciplined.
Some other major stats to look at here Kentucky didn't really turn the ball over.
I mean, at all.
I mean, they had five turnovers on the day to 15 assists and everybody kind of got involved
there.
Chandler had three Aberdeen had three away had three Chandler had one really nice assist
down the floor to Garrison where it's one of those heat moments where you just like spin
it down the floor.
No look pass.
I love that.
Also really like the pair of assists that I saw from Diabate and Garrison Garrison threading
the freaking needle to Aberdeen on a really, really tough lay up love to see stuff like
that just crisp, crisp pass, crisp passing from the cats today.
Meanwhile, LSU not able to really create outside of isolation.
And frankly, it was the Max McKinnon show who finished with 28 points on 11 of 17 shooting.
Most of that damage coming in the second half.
She scored 18 on seven of 10 again in that second period of play.
Just a weird one, just a weird one for Kentucky where they shoot poorly, but also they shoot
well in some aspects and they rebound poorly, but also they rebound well in some aspects.
They didn't get beat on the offensive glass.
They did get beaten second chance points.
I think the big story here today though was the bench again with 29 as opposed to LSU's
10.
And the fact that Kentucky just didn't turn the ball over.
They weren't careless with their offensive possessions.
It's got to take a more cohesive, crisp, intentional effort against the Missouri Tigers, especially
on defense if they want to find a way to win that game.
And by the way, don't want to get your hopes up.
I have no idea what the Vegas line is for this game.
Ken Palm has Kentucky winning this game by four tomorrow.
They give them a 65% chance to take this game.
That's right.
Kentucky favored against the higher seed, quote unquote, and I think that makes sense.
I mean, Kentucky was a win away on Saturday from being that fourth team, from getting
that double buy.
And here they are now having to fight their way through the bracket in a much more
strenuous manner, but they're favored.
They have a shot to push deeper.
And I really do think screw it.
Why not?
I've predicted a win against Florida, but you got to get past the Missouri Tigers first.
And that is a matchup again, where you got to show some intensity and fight because
this is a freaking revenge game.
They came into your building and embarrassed you earlier this year.
You have to make a statement, make a statement tomorrow.
Honestly, you want to talk about some of the missed for threes from LSU.
Colin Chandler had some wide open looks that he just did not knock down.
He knocks down two more.
I mean, we're talking about this game a little differently.
LSU doesn't get to 82.
Kentucky wins this game by 15.
The game is over.
Like way, way, way before then it was late.
So maybe some things can go Kentucky's way tomorrow in terms of shot variants.
They didn't necessarily go their way in this game and they still scored 87 freaking points.
So I mean, how much can you really complain?
They shot 46% in the second half and they still drop 41.
I mean, I mean, they're making it work.
Find a way.

Also don't think that the tickets are that expensive relative to yours past, but I appreciate
it guys.
This episode really was brought to you by Brandon Garrison.
I mean, I don't know if you guys have checked or clocks.
I mean, I understand Daylight Saving's time was just a couple of days ago.
It's Brandon Garrison time.
I mean, frankly, it's always Brandon Garrison time.
I mean, if you really think about it, but today, I mean, if you haven't checked, check the
time.
It's, it's, it's BG everywhere for those of you that are unaware.
Are we making normal?
Donald's jokes in the chat, man.
You guys know what's up?
You guys know what's up?
Whatever they need.
They have a lead.
They either commit a turnover or fling a 30 foot three.
It does.
It is crazy how this team kind of plays with its, its food in a way where it doesn't keep
its foot on the gas and the only game, the only game they've done that all season long
where they've just locked in and the officials had to kind of like rip it, like, pull it
away from them was the Arkansas game where had the officials not gotten on their bowl
in that game.
Kitsaki would have won that game by a lot more just because of how intense they played.
You can expect these guys to be the juggernaut like Mizzou reminder to everybody stats are
not everything.
Missouri is twenty and eleven and ten and eight.
I mean, they also, they also finished ten and eight.
They also kind of came to a skid at the end of the year.
They also lost their final two per four games.
They lost to Oklahoma by a lot on March third.
I mean, they aren't a juggernaut.
They are not a world beating team.
And in this first matchup, I mean, Mark Mitchell had his way with twenty one points on
on seven of fifteen shooting.
He got to the foul line and then he Robinson had ten assists in this one.
Jaden Stone knocked down three threes.
I mean, Kentucky really inefficient inside the arc in this one the last time these two teams
face.
They also didn't execute as well as they could have could have at the free throw line.
And I just think that again, you know, it's weird is that maybe the answer is to start
braiding Garrison in this one.
Maybe you can keep up with with Mitchell a little bit more effectively because I don't
know if Mitchell's not having a game.
You can, you can kind of work your way around this Mizzou squad who is still, it's still,
I mean, twenty wins in the SEC is twenty wins.
This is a competent team led by a good coach.
But this team's beatable.
I mean, there's a reason why Kentucky's projected to win tomorrow.
Also again, shooting variance, just, just Chandler wake up, Missouri also.
What is it?
13th in the SEC in three point defense.
I mean, their opponents get a large percentage of their points from deep can talk, can
talk.
You can, can, can make some noise there shooting the ball.
I can barely handle live chats without wanting to choke people.
I don't think I'd make it in the discord.

I want you guys all on there.
We're probably going to do, I hope, another live stream where we all predict the bracket
or I let you guys pull it out and choose because last year, that bracket was, was not bad.
It wasn't bad.
Anyway, thank you guys so much for tuning in.
Any questions or comments as we close out, drop them now 87 82 is the final.
Neither of these teams shoot well from beyond the arc, both go 32 of 64 from the floor.
Kentucky, edge and free throws, edge and points off turnovers, edge and bench points, edge
and fast break points, edge and steals assists blocks.
Kentucky held the lead for 32 minutes of this game.
It was a good, it was a good enough performance, but you got to have more.
peanut butter bossy says I don't understand why we don't play yellow bitch at the five
more having five shooters is Pope's thing, right?
I agree.
Um, if Garrison knocks down two threes tomorrow, though, I mean, I guess we might be having
a different conversation, but you're right.
I think the question there is how, how physical can you be with, with a guy like yellow
bitch at your five spot, like defensively, because a team like LSU, they've got all these
driving forwards, these downhill guys that, that have to create isolation.
And then also tomorrow with Mark Mitchell, I mean, I mean, you've got him and you've, you've
got two seven footers and Sean Phillips and they're back up who I can't remember.
Uh, let me pull up his name real quick.
Yeah, Trent burns who is seven foot five 260.
Um, who doesn't play like a ton of time, but he's gotten some run recently where he had
a stretch of five games there to close up the season where he got at least 12 minutes
of game.
So, yeah, Trent Pierce is also another six 10 guy at your power forward spot.
Mark Mitchell technically plays the three for the Tigers, which is crazy.
Watch Noah light it up tomorrow.
He's, as Kentucky wins, you lose says in the chat right above that urgency, urgency, urgency.
It's egregious that that's still farmed to the face.
Don't get in an offensive foul.
It technically was, but you hear the thing is you got to call that, you got to call that
basket off.
They set the precedent at the beginning of this game that an arm to the face was going
to be a foul and they stayed consistent on that.
Which was about the only thing they could stayed consistent on today.
They missed a million walks.
One of them on Kentucky in a crucial spot, by the way, it goes both ways.
They missed some walks.
They should have called that offensive foul and waved off the basket.
There's a lot of things that this officiating crew could have done a lot better today.
It was it was poor.
It was poor.
We do need this version of garrison for the remainder of the season, Kentucky played the worst
team in the SEC.
I mean, that team played their hard out.
I mean, you got to realize this is the end of the line for all of these.
For the bottom half of this, this league, it's, it's the end.
And for seniors like Max, Max McKinnon, I mean, that's his, that's his career.
That's his college career.
It's over today, today it ended and he went out with a bank.
He fought hard.
28 points.
It wasn't enough.
Mark well, Sutton.
It's over for him.
Rashad King.
It's over for him.
Paulo Tomba.
It's over for him.
Like you got to understand, like these guys are going to be playing with a little bit more.
First of all, because it's Kentucky, but I think more importantly, it's their last game.
And it's probably their last game with their head coach.
If it's not been announced already, Matt, Matt McMahon is probably going to be fired.
Speaking of news, and we will leave on this because we're going to have to talk about
it at some point, according to reports, and this is coming from Joe Tipton, Kentucky
is targeting Keegan Brown to join the staff in a front office role, according to sources.
At on three, a deal is expected to come together in the near future.
Keegan was on Mark Pope's staff at BYU.
He's most recently been the head video coordinator for the Wisconsin herd, the, the jelly
gaffiliate of the Bucks.
He specializes in roster construction, scouting analytics and NIL strategy, while, while
that is not a GM, while that is not a GM, you will take any sort of addition to this
team that can do a little bit, that can help you scouting and evaluating what you should
have for next year's roster, you still need a GM.
And I think Pope recently said like they, they're, they're going to make a couple of hires
this off season.
So Brown, I, I would like to see how he helps.
Pope is getting on my nerves with the, uh, the G, the GM thing I, I, I agree.
Our defense is still lexington.
Well, a better freaking show up tomorrow.
You're right.
A better show up tomorrow against Mizzou.
So we'll be back with a recap episode of that show tomorrow.
