Man, things got weird.
Well, I mean, they always get weird in Sacramento, but I gotta be honest.
This was a new one.
You are Lockdown Kings, your daily Sacramento Kings podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast
Network, your team every day.
Welcome in.
I am James Ham, Kings Insider for ESPN 13, 20, the Kings Beat, and of course, host of Lockdown

Thanks for making us your first listen of the day.
I've covered this Sacramento Kings for the last 16 years as a credentialed media member,
also a member of the Pro Basketball Writers Association.
I've seen just about everything in the NBA, but this evening was a little bit different.
It was new.
And we're going to dive into it.
Lockdown Kings is part of the Lockdown Podcast Network.
Now the number one sports podcast network, thanks for making us your first listen of the

All right.
We're going to finish up today's show with six quick dots, which we always do on game
night.
And in block number two, we're going to talk about the state of media coverage because
it became a huge issue.
And that's what we're going to start the show with tonight.
Following the Kings 133 to 123 lost to the New Orleans Pelicans, Russell Westbrook
decided to come out and speak to the media.
It did not go the way that most media sessions go.
In fact, it went very much the way that Russell Westbrook has been throughout his career.
He was open.
He was angry at some of the things that were said in the media or at least frustrated,
annoyed, whatever it might be.
And to be honest, he let the media kind of have it.
Look at the Sacramento media to task.
And normally we don't do this.
We don't play a five minute clip, especially in the first block of the show.
But I think tonight's show, specifically, we need to start there.
We also have a clip from Doug Christie a little bit later in the show.
And I think it matches with some of the things that happened tonight.
But let's get to Russell Westbrook and the Sacramento media.
All right.
You know, 19 games left now, like just kind of what's the focus,
like as you guys close it, it's how you have to be lost tonight.
And, you know, we're kind of doing some things to develop in young guys and stuff.
Like, what do you, what can be accomplished like in these last 19 games?
You know, go out, compete.
Just a game, be a professional, and like, that's what you can do.
What do you think, though?
Because you've got a lot of answers and you'll always be talking.
I got no answer.
Oh, very interesting.
Nobody, I don't got no, no.
You guys have a lot of opinions about how we do what we're doing.
What you got?
No, you, yeah, you make a lot of statements and broad statements that you have no
context.
So, when you get your context for one of your practice,
no.
Are you in a film session?
No.
Are you anywhere around the building?
Yes.
No, I have to say a practice inside the first context.
And actually, do you know me?
I know you.
No, you don't know me.
All night, you're first.
You don't know me.
You don't know me.
But you make a lot of comments as though you do know me.
I'm talking about your basketball.
No, no.
No, you know, my intent.
I see it.
I see it.
On the back of you now, but you don't know me, right?
So, you don't know anything about me.
Not you personally.
Thank you.
That's good.
Anybody else who you guys have any comments about how we play what we're doing?
You guys are quiet today, but you've got a lot of comments when you're game
going on after the game.
What we do, we should be doing, how we should be doing it.
I'm confused.
Oh, you're making me hear it.
You must have seen our film session, too.
I'm not in your film session, but you guys have the worst record, didn't you?
Yeah.
Cool.
You guys have been bottom three in office and defense throughout the year.
Perfect.
So, I mean, I think that's fair.
So, what's fair?
It's fair to point that out.
That's my point out, but that's not the only thing that's been talked about.
What else is the point out?
Well, I can only speak for myself.
Yeah, but that's not what you say.
I've seen things you say, it's not just about our office and our defense and what our
record is.
You've been the worst record for a long time now.
What have I said?
I don't want to go down around, but I mean, we can, I'm actually, you have a lot of things
to say.
So, this is your time.
Just to floor it, to say it.
Any questions?
I mean, it's the time.
I just think in sports when the teams don't have success, they're, they should, they're,
they're, you think that we should have success, right?
You should, do you say that way?
I mean, that you should have success, huh?
That you should have success.
Yeah.
I mean, do you guys are trying to have success?
Yeah.
Okay, cool.
That's good.
What about you?
What do you think?
I think it's been a rough year for everybody.
Yeah.
And, I mean, as somebody who's covered the league for a long time and this team did a long
time, this is by far the worst season I've seen.
Yeah.
And I don't blame you for that.
No, I just, I don't think nobody's been in the, I'm just saying, or any of the players.
What I don't like is that I've been to make a long time and I've been around a lot of
different organizations, media, beat writers.
And we have a lot of young guys on this team, a lot of guys that don't know what's happening
or what's around, whether it's from, from the coaching, from the players.
Do you guys, the job is to talk about the game, what's happening in the game?
Not stir up a bunch of, I don't want to cuss you if I don't even find a stir up a bunch
of stuff that, it's not accurate.
And that's my problem.
Like, being in the league a lot, I've been able to experience a lot of this times where
people outside of our building, outside of the film, such outside of what we do, David,
how much work we put in, that is not an easy job to do, it's not easy job to do.
And I think the respect level is that we respect y'all, we respect what y'all do, y'all
come in, y'all make y'all comments, and nobody's saying nothing.
But I don't have to sit back and not say no, I've been, I've been, I've been, I've been
as, you know, as a bit of my thing, I've been on the road, but as a leader of this team,
as much as I can speak up for, for, for the guys in the locker room, we talk about this
here, I hear it, because of the comments you guys make, you got guys thinking about a whole
bunch of random things they're having to do with the game, you guys are making false comments
about our team and what we're doing here, and I don't appreciate that.
So my, my answer that you respect what we do, and what we respect what you do.
Yeah, it's just some different that you didn't seem throughout your career, as far as we do
come.
Not me.
I've seen much worse, but it's not about me as about our team, so I'm talking about our
team and our group of guys, the organization, I mean, I wasn't, you know, I, I came
right a little late, but I feel like you guys expect us to lose the winning championship.
The way the conversation and how we talking is like, hey, you guys, we don't win the
championship, it's like it's a bust or something.
And that's not, that's not the case, this is our job, if you have your job, you gotta go
to work.
We don't, it'd be great if we didn't critique y'all, but we don't, we got, we have our
job, we come to our job, the best way we know how to weigh in, it's lost all the party
game.
And after that, we go home, you gotta go home to see our families, we go home to see
our families, and that's that, but don't make false contexts, comments about people's
individuals, people who they are, what they do, what they're thinking, why they're doing
this?
How come they're doing that?
If you don't know, they'll say nothing you don't know none about, and that's a particular
for you.
All right, interesting conversation, and like, look, I understand that, that people are frustrated.
And to be honest with you, like, look, I think everybody in Sacramento is frustrated.
Like covering a team that's, that's 14 and 50 is frustrating.
There's a couple of things, so like, I want to point out, number one, I don't think anyone
in Sacramento thought they were winning a championship this year.
I don't think anyone in Sacramento thought that this team was going to win 50 games.
To be honest, I think I put them in a right, right around 36 to open the season.
And then when King and Murray got hurt, that number dropped.
We as media members, we, our job is to stand there and, and ask questions to have conversations.
So Westbrook asked me specifically what I thought, said, thought, this is the worst season
I've ever covered, all my years covering the team.
And I hope the audio was good there and it didn't cut out.
I couldn't hear everything in my ear as it was going through.
But it's, it's a weird discussion.
It's a, it's a player that's lashing out at things that he's seeing, that he's hearing.
And again, I don't listen to everything that everybody else puts out there.
I do have a daily podcast.
I do go on the radio three or four times a week.
I do another podcast.
Like there are a lot of things that that I talk about.
And it's possible he's read something that I put in his six quick thought
or that I've said on a podcast that he didn't particularly like.
But there is an accountability thing here.
And that's something I want to get into next.
And it's sort of the state of media and where some of this goes.
But before we do that, we're going to take a break.
We're going to dive into what we'll dive into more of Russell Westbrook and just a second.
College basketball is nonstop big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night.

Now look, Russell Westbrook, whether he is 100% correct or not, I don't know.
Like it is sports media in general fair are fans on social media fair.
And the answer is like typically no.
I mean, I see it as somebody who writes and who's covered a team forever.
Like sometimes it gets aimed at us as media members.
And a lot of times the angst that a lot of people have out there,
oh Sacramento media isn't hard enough on these guys.
And to be honest with you, that's just not true.
We aren't New York where you've got like eight different newspapers competing.
We are a small or market.
But that doesn't mean that there isn't passionate people who do a really good job here in Sacramento.
And I think one of the things that I'll talk about tonight,
it's something that I really take pride in.
And that is when you're writing or you're talking on a podcast or
you're going on the radio and you're making statements, you do have to show up.
And for the last 16 years, I go to as many practices as I can.
The last maybe year and a half, two years, that was limited because of a radio show that I did.
I'm back at practices now, but that doesn't change the fact that in every game, every game, I go to the locker room.
I go to locker room and pregame.
And to be honest with you, sitting in the locker room every single night in pregame is Russell Westbrook.
He is the only king that sits in the locker room.
He is the entirety of our media availability from 545 to 615 on a regular 7 o'clock NBA start.
That does not mean that he talks to the media.
And the reason why I go in the locker room personally is because if there is a player who has a problem with something that I've said.
And there have been plenty of players that had problems with things that I've said in the past.
Me and the DeMarcus cousins had plenty of conversations.
He would look at me and he'd go like this, give me the finger, not the middle finger for those you listening on audio.
He would draw me in and say, hey, come here and talk to me.
And we would have a conversation at his locker room about something I said or something I wrote.
And we would hash it out and we would move on about our day and we would act as professionals, both of us having these conversations.
This season in particular, I have made some statements, both on the radio and whether it's six quick dots or during a game about the team quitting early in the year because early in the year, that's what I saw.
I saw a veteran team, the second oldest team in the NBA have nights where it looked like they quit on the floor.
I had a conversation off the record with Zach Levine about a statement that I made and he wanted to make sure he that I understood that people out there understood that they weren't quitting.
They don't know what was going wrong, but they understand that stuff is going wrong, but they want he wanted to make sure that he personally said, hey, look, I'm not quitting.
That's not who I am. That's not who I've ever been.
And I understand it. That's that's part of the give and take. It's part of the responsibility to show up and put yourself in a situation where you can have that conversation.
I'll also say this, Russell Westbrook keeps his earphones in. He sings the entire time or at least part of it. He gets on his phone.
If you approach him and ask him a question, he says, no, no, thank you. I don't want to talk or sometimes he says that at the time he just doesn't acknowledge that you asked him a question.
That's it's his approach and every player is allowed to have their own approach.
For me, I'm surprised because even tonight, I stood in front of Killian Hayes.
Well, he sat in his locker stall, maybe two or three lockers away from Russell Westbrook.
And I had an off the record conversation just about life in general about a kid who's trying to make his way into the league who grew up in France.
We talked about where he grew up in France. We talked about Max Reino and him speaking French to each other.
That's the job. And I'm always available to have these conversations. That is not always the case, though.
If there are there are other people who do not do that, who do not go to the locker room and give a player an opportunity to have those discussions.
And I think just think it's an interesting way that this came out.
And it's also probably why Russ didn't go at me like crazy because I am there.
And if he wants to have a conversation with me, go ahead and have the conversation.
I'd also say this, there are a lot of things we hear in Sacramento and that goes for every MBA city.
A ton of things that we hear. And we don't run out there and talk about it on the radio or anything else.
It's because you have to vet those things and you have to understand that some of the information you get comes from all kinds of different sources.
So before I wrap this segment up, I do want to get to sort of, we asked Doug Christie about this.
I asked him very specifically, hey, do you think the coverage of you has been fair?
And he said, like, look, I don't read this stuff.
But he also provided a different perspective as both a coach and a former player that I think is relevant to this discussion as a whole.
So let's get to that.
In sports, a lot of times, pros will say, like, tune out the noise, don't listen to the radio, all that stuff.
Other guys will see stuff and use it as fuel.
And I'm curious, your perspective, you've been kind of on both sides of it.
Where do you fall on that or do you let guys individually kind of handle it their own way in terms of, you know, the noise in the spotlight?
But, you know, I don't let them do their grown man so they want to, some people read it all.
Some people don't pay attention, some people act like they don't pay attention, but actually do.
There's a lot of different ways.
It's just, you know, it's changed a lot.
You know, at first it was just newspaper and then all of a sudden internet came around and then Twitter and Instagram and all these different things.
And it's just a bombardment of, you know, opinions and some of them are correct and some of them are just people saying stuff.
So it's up to the person and the individual to be honest with you.
That's what you want to do.
What you have to see, and it happened to me before, personally, like I read something that somebody said about my mom and she's dead.
So I got ready to lose it.
And right then I said, you know what?
So I turned out that off because I actually will say something in that end good for my job, probably, you know what I'm saying.
And people, you know, so it's up to the individual.
You have to protect your energy.
That's your responsibility as a human being.
And if you don't protect your energy and you let it go, if somebody can affect it and throw you off and have you gain messed up and you mind messed up and you're all in a negative space, well, I mean, I can't do it.
You got to check yourself on that one.
So for me, I try to protect my energy because it's a lot going on.
So that's the reason that I don't really get involved.
Do I see some stories?
Obviously, people send them to me from time to time, but I just try to focus with what I have to do on a night to night basis.
I don't want anything trying to sway me in any type of way or something in the back of your head.
Just go out there with a fresh, honest perspective, trying to do the best that I can do to make this organization go where I know it can go.
And we're going to make it happen.
All right, I think that that's a really good point from Doug Christie.
And again, someone who's been on both sides of this, both as a player and now as a coach, it's a difficult job, man, it is.
Like as players, you're sitting here and it's a make or break league, it's a make or miss league.
And you got, you know, 17,500 people staring at you as you're going to raise up and shoot a three pointer that can decide whether you're you're winning a game or losing a game or advancing in the playoffs or not advancing in the playoffs.
And, you know, like everything is under a microscope, but at the same time, like this team is is a disappointing team.
It is there's no way around that and there's also no way to sugar coat that and there's no way to be intellectually honest with people unless you call this team what it is.
And that is, you know, from start to finish this season, a pretty big failure and a big disappointment.
And I'll say this right here, and I've said it before, it's the most disappointing team I've covered in 16 years.
And it's not because I thought they'd win the NBA title and it's not because I thought that they would be a two seed in the Western conference.
It's because this team is the worst team in the NBA. And I'm not just saying that they're like they're 14 and 50.
They have the worst team in the NBA. If it all ended today, they would have the number one spot in the NBA draft lottery.
And that's just being honest. So, all right, we're going to step aside.
When we come back, we're going to get into, we got to talk about the game that actually happened.
And there were some good things and bad things. But again, it's a standardized, you know, loss for the kinks. We'll be right back.
Welcome to the five hour energy flavor draft with 18 different flavors to choose from, including new options like confetti craze,
fruity rainbow or cotton candy. There's something for everyone. The board is set. The flavors are ready.
And I've got my number one pick for the five hour energy flavor draft.
For me, it's always cherry. The bold cherry candy style flavor, sweet with a light tart edge, bright punchy taste.
It's just my favorite flavor flavor. But I also think that some of the new sweet flavors coming out, the confetti craze,
a rainbow, fruity rainbow or cotton candy. Hey, look, you might as well give them a try.
You can five hour energy shots give you a boost with zero sugar and they have a lot of upcoming flavor
innovations planned. Find your new flavor, favorite flavor of five hour energy shots.

All right, after every single Kings loss win, whatever might happen, we dive into six quick thoughts.
It's just a really, really good way to quickly run through sort of the nuts and bolts of the game.
The Sacramento Kings, it really did look like this game was two teams that were trying to tank. I got
to be honest. The Kings have said they're not tanking a team like New Orleans has no reason to tank
because they traded their first round pick. But when I watch a game and the Kings have gone 11 deep
and we're not even in the mid second quarter yet and players who don't typically play are playing
minutes, you can take whatever you want out of that. Some of the defense tonight was all star
game level just straight up like guys going right to the rim, pushing guys around, just going up
and laying shots in, dunks, all that stuff. The Kings lost 133 to 120, 123. But let's dive into six
quick thoughts because I do think there are some positives in this and the first quick thought
he's on a roll. Precious to Chua is just turning into an absolute monster down the stretch
and he's auditioning for all 30 teams. Precious to Chua is a very good dude and I'm very happy for him
that he's not only getting this opportunity but he's found a way to make this into a very successful
season even if it's on a losing on a losing squad tonight. He had 29 points. He grabbed 12 rebounds.
He dished out five assists. He blocked two shots and he added a steal. Look, he's playing
out of his mind and good for Precious again. Couldn't happen to a nicer person. Let's get to number two
and that's not ready for to hand it off. Russell Westbrook and Demart DeRose and took every shot
for the Kings in the first five minutes of the game. They settled in eventually. Westbrook
posted 17 points to go with 10 assists, a double double. Demart DeRose had 15 points and two rebounds
and they played in the fourth quarter. I think Doug Christie actually stuck with a veteran group
late and tried to win this thing which was interesting to watch. We had a rookie battle in this.
That's number three. Rookie battle. Max Reino versus Derek Queen. They're the two top centers
so far from the 2025 NBA draft and they had a very good battle. Reino had 10 points in five rebounds.
He did not play as many minutes as he has typically and again, I'm not sure why that was but fourth
quarter minutes did not go to Max Reino and Nick Clifford where they have recently. Derek Queen
went for 12 points, nine rebounds, five assists. Both had solid performances. Neither one stood out
as just like the best player on the court but solid performance for both of them. Number four,
standard night. Malik Monk continues to do the thing that he does every time he steps on the floor.
He brings energy. He brings fun. Again, he's shooting the ball extremely well this season.
Tonight he had 18 points in 30 minutes and four assists. Again, an uptick in minutes for a veteran
player. The final stretch run, Russell Westbrook, Malik Monk, Precious Atua, Drew U-Banks, and
Demar to Rosen finish the game. Even though the game was, I don't know, it's a 10-point loss but
it was about a 10-point buffer most of the fourth quarter. Let's get to number five. A little bit
of everything. Nick Clifford didn't have a big scoring night but he still stopped the statute with
seven points, five rebounds, three assists. But he only played 21 minutes. That's the big thing
I'd point to in this game. Him and Max did not play the heavy minutes that they have recently.
So a little bit different approach from Doug Christie. Tonight, I don't think this is something we're
going to see a lot of going forward. I think we're going to see a lot of Nick Clifford. We're going to
see a lot of Maxi Moreno all the way down the stretch. Final quick thought and that is Drew U-Banks.
This was interesting to watch, to be honest with you. He's barely played most of the season.
And tonight, he actually got a podium game. And to be honest, I thought he deserved the podium
game. He played within the structure of who he is as a player. And that's not always the case with
Drew, but I also think he struggled with this season. He did not think he was going to walk into
this year and be playing sparingly. He's going to sit most nights. And the reason why he's playing
right now is because not only is Dumanis to bonus out, but Dylan Cardwell is out as well.
And so the minutes got to go somewhere. And I thought tonight he was excellent. He had five or
six dunks on the night. He finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He played under control.
He patrolled the paint from the dunker spot, which I thought was great. Watching him limit what he's
doing. And like the lobs, the lobs were great. Russell Westbrook, a bunch of his tennisists,
went to Drew U-Banks on the lobs. So just a good night for Drew U-Banks. All right.
We'll be back tomorrow. No, we won't be back tomorrow. We will be back on Monday.
But this is one of those those interesting nights where a podcast takes a totally different turn
right at the last second. And I did not know that this podcast was going to look like this tonight.
But there it is. And again, no hard feelings towards Russell Westbrook. He did what he
thinks he needs to do as a leader. He clearly saw something he doesn't like. Whether it's about people
calling out young players or calling out other players on the team. He just thinks the coverage
has been a little snarky. And to be honest with you, it has been snarky. And that happens when
you're 14 and 50. And people who their livelihood is wrapped up into covering a team. And all of a
sudden, it's not that interesting to cover. And people aren't watching and people aren't listening
and people aren't reading. Like everybody's impacted by a 14 and 50 season. And like, look,
we still have 19 games to go. I don't know what it's going to look like at the end. But hopefully,
it's not a bunch more of nights like this where we're having these sort of conversations that are
a little different from a veteran player who just, you know, gets decides he's going to take a
different path. Thanks for tuning in. If you don't mind, thumbs up button, subscribe to the channel,
