KMOX's Sean Malone on the Congressional maps, and Wheels attempts a compliment!- h2

0:00Bye! Welcome back guys, D&GS UK MLX. Tron Malone from the newsroom is here with us because I'm just gonna be honest. I haven't followed this. I don't quite understand all of it. I think I know where we stand now. But can you take us back to the very beginning? Like when we changed these maps, why we changed these maps? What is its stake using this map versus this map? So to go back to the beginning, essentially, President Donald Trump in an effort. Am I on by the way? Yeah, we can't hear it in your headphones. No, it's just that. Real trick we play on guests. So President Donald Trump, you know, asked Republicans and Republican states to redistrict in order to try to create as many Republican leaning seats as possible. And Missouri was one of the first states on board. I think it was second after Texas to redistrict. And the Texas and Missouri both kind of kicked off.

1:02What we've seen now is the nation wide redistricting effort. California followed suit. They redistricted in favor of the Democrats, other Republican leaning states have redistricted Virginia tried to, I believe it was Virginia and they were blocked. But they're going to have a chance to vote this November on whether or not they redraw their maps. And now Missouri finds themselves in a similar situation, at least as I speak right now, because I could step outside, check the news feed and see things have changed since then. But but now so now the then after Missouri redistricted, if you recall from right to work a few years ago, there was a referendum on right to work that blocked right to work from taking effect. So a group, people not politicians organized gathered 300,000 signatures to put a referendum on the ballot, which is what voters will decide in November of hold on. Give the people a say on the maps before we use them. Problem was this was passed during a special session and be the maps.

2:07And so because of that, the deadline to certify that referendum was also primary day. And at four o'clock, they had to be the referendum had to be certified by five o'clock. And if it was that would mean the maps are not in effect, but at four o'clock secretary state, Denny Hoskins came out and said, I don't think you can use a referendum on redistricting. It doesn't make sense. The power lies with the state legislature to do so. So I'm not certifying this. And then that kicked off this cascade of further court arguments about, well, you, yes, you can. That's what was ultimately decided by the Missouri Supreme Court. A referendum can be used to block a mid decade redistricting efforts. And then we found ourselves in the situation here where, okay, we just used these maps on primary day, the 2025 redrawn maps to try to carve up Kansas City and give Republicans an extra seat in Congress. Those were used on primary day. And now it's going to be a different map for the general election in November.

3:10So it has a bigger impact out west and Kansas city, especially in the Kansas City metro area and the greater Kansas city area where if you were in one district, you now could be in one of three districts with how it was carved up here locally. The biggest impacts are a little bit in congressional district one, which was Wesley Bell and Cory Bush, not very much, but a little change. The biggest was two and three locally in particular in St. Charles County. St. Charles County was previously entirely in congressional district three. And now it's a rather for the primary. Some of it was in two, some of it was in three. And I believe now going back to the 2022 maps and puts it all back in congressional district three, I believe. I'm trying to keep up all the top of my head of which one is included in it, but basically 25% of the voters in St. Charles County voted on a primary election that they will then not to get to vote on that general election. Okay. And so then so then he has guns does what he does and the Democrats are like,

4:15Hey, that's a foul. And the Supreme Court, Kavanaugh says, yeah, can't do that. And then a Missouri federal judge says, sure you can. And now we're back to that. And then the whole Supreme Court, I guess yesterday, said, no, you can't. So now we're back to know you can't. Yes, they said no, you can't. And then in that note, you can't actually came this morning about a half hour before a content hearing before the Missouri Supreme Court because there was some, and this is where I should have had you with your law degree over my shoulder explaining all this to me. There was a lot of confusion around the two court rulings, the first one from Justice Kavanaugh, which affirmed the Missouri Supreme Court and then that federal court ruling because they, the federal court ruling said you cannot use any map besides the 2025 map. Didn't outright say use the 2025 map. It just says every other map out of bounds can't use it. Well, the Missouri Supreme Court said you can't use the 2025 map. So if you read it that way, what you're thinking is is no maps are allowed.

5:21And then we get into the whole crazy. What if that stays as it is of, you know, couldn't you even vote into a like a Missouri, even going to have a congressional election in November? That wound up not being the case, the US Supreme Court stra... paused the temporary restraining order that said don't use anything besides the 2025 maps. And so that gave them clarity of, okay, the only maps that seem to be kosher right now are the 2022 maps from a few years ago. The ones that lean six to two in favor of the Republicans instead of seven to one in favor of the Republicans. So that's what finally at least I say for now. Yeah, because I feel like I could like what could be 10 minutes from now, right? Yeah, but if the Supreme Court in mass said no, yes, I don't know what else they do. Well, so the way they said no, they just from an again, this is where I need a law degree to better understand this stuff. My understanding is they stayed the temporary restraining order until there's a

6:24hearing on it. Now I don't know if there's enough time to have that hearing. They're the military ballots go out on the 18th. So we're talking a little more than a week at this point. And again, those ballots got to be thrown together and constructed as well. Yeah. But with a little more than a week to go, whether or not there's going to be a hearing and a decision from that hearing, I'm not sure on what that timeline looks like. I'm not saying it's not possible. I just don't know. Yeah. So that's where it's one of those where it's like we think we might finally have some some fine finality to this some end to this secretary, Hoskins, not too long ago about an hour and a half ago sent out an email to all county level election authority saying we're using the 2022 maps. So so you hope that's it. But you never know what that federal hearing if there's, you know, if there is a hearing that can get scheduled on time, what happens there? If there is some other order that comes out and says, nope, got to use the 2025 Missouri First Map. Sean, I have a question about the 2025 maps and I do apologize if we've already

7:26addressed this, but this it's also confusing. Can I stop right there? I'm the one with the law degree from was you. I can't tell you how often we're having legal discussions and she'll say some like, well, never. Well, this is just about the origination of the 2025 map, everything that I've read just says these are maps that were backed by President Trump. But how did they come to be in the state of Missouri? Like what was the process as far as implementing that? Is that something that people voted on or the legislature just said? This is how it's going to be. The legislature said this is how it's going to be. They convened for a special session called by governor Mike Kehoe to redistrict the state. And it was, you know, at the request of President Trump because again, he wants to have a better chance at maintaining control of Congress with the midterm elections, like even putting aside, you know, what polls say and everything like that. Typically your midterm election is not good for an incumbent president. Usually that's when you get some pushback of, you know, you lose a couple seats.

8:31And with a slim majority they already had in the house to begin with, Trump wanted everything done to try to maintain that Republican majority. So which normally I would be against, but now that I know I get $5,000. Yes. After the other $5,000 tariff dividend and the, the dose $2,000 checks were supposed to get as well. So we're rich. Man, I know. I mean, is it your understanding that the reason why these maps failed is because was it just kind of pushed through quickly as far as like we're just doing this? We're just doing this. Not that it was pushed through quickly. If anything, it was pushed through late. And that's where they thought and that's where we're kind of in this time crunch mess that we're in right now, but it wasn't in the regular session. This happened. It was in a special session afterwards. So that pushed back the clock. And then again, Secretary Hoskins, you know, his deadline to certify the referendum. It was election day. So he took all the time that he was allowed to. Now he said he was checking every signature up to election day.

9:32That's what he told me. But at a certain point, you realize, okay, there are enough signatures. Or if you really thought I don't know if the referendum can be used on this, that could have been cleared up sooner. So a lot of this could have been figured out sooner, but essentially, Danny Hoskins and Republicans looked at it to use a sports analogy. You're up in the fourth quarter. You're just running out the clock and they wanted to prolong any further legal action as long as possible because the way the ground laid at that moment, the 2025 maps were in effect. And then you saw the inverse on Friday when the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that the 2022 maps have to be used. The 2025 maps cannot be used when the Justice Kavanaugh affirmed that as well. Then it kind of flipped the score on its head. It's like when you allow a touchdown with 20 seconds. Crap. The sudden now, you know, there's not enough time to the Monday deadline.

10:33And that's when Secretary Hoskins in his conversation with me on Friday, pulled out for what I heard was the first time he said the deadline to actually the 19th by federal law, the eighth, I think Monday was was just the state or Tuesday, rather, Tuesday was the state deadline for the law. And that I kind of equated when I was on with Chris and Amy, uh, talking about that to like, you know, the world cup when 90 minutes hit and all of a sudden you think it's done and then you see like a plus eight up in the corner of the little score bug on your TV. And it's like, no, there's actually a couple of little more minutes left. No, there's actually a couple more days left for us to try to figure this out and see if they could get a ruling on their side. They did briefly get a ruling, at least as it was understood by Secretary Hoskins on his side. Like I said, the way I've come to understand it is that it just read that no map was in effect. But as it stands right now, 2022 map is in effect. Missouri will get a chance to vote on whether that 2025 map takes effect moving

11:34forward. No matter what else happens here, no one's arguing about that anymore. Voters, you will get the chance to vote yes or no. We want moving forward a seven one, uh, at least the way it leans, a seven one Republican majority map, uh, as opposed to the current six to map. But it will be interesting to see what happens in November. Uh, if that's voted down, but also amendment three, which would kind of roll back the protection, the abortion access constitutional amendment that was passed just two years ago, if that gets rolled back as well, you have to look at Republicans across the state of the losses that have been racked up recently with the two statewide amendments, uh, both about changes to the state constitution and also to how taxes are collected in the state of Missouri. If these two fail as well, you got to look at Missouri Republicans and think, where's the disconnect here between what you're trying to push through and what the Missouri people are clearly saying no to at the end of the day.

12:35This may be a really dumb thing to say, but it feels like we have a Republican legislature and a much more Democrat population. I have felt that way since I moved to the state to work in radio over 10 years ago now. Ever since I've been here every time there is a ballot issue where voters can directly weigh in on, you know, thumbs up, thumbs down this type of issue, the left leaning policy wins, whether it's right to work, whether it's legalizing marijuana, whether it's raising the minimum wage, abortion access all across the political spectrum, it tends to lean left more often than not. And then we see Republicans that don't hold those same beliefs get elected. It's something I just haven't been able to understand, but that's a disconnect that at least in my 10 years here. I know before then Missouri was a far more left leaning state. It was a toss up state. I the Obama won Missouri one of his two elections or maybe that was IOM working

13:37off the top of my head with that one. But you know, it surprised me that at its core when you put the issue in front of the average Missouri voter, the median voter, they'll vote one way when it comes to the issues and another way when it comes to the politicians and their beliefs on those same exact issues. It's really fascinating topic. Yes, because it could be that the democratic leaning population don't like the Democrat politicians. They prefer the word, you know, I mean, it could be so many different things. I think that is part of it. I think it's some of, you know, people think they like the policies, but then you get all into all the culture war type stuff and maybe that's what's keeping people away from voting for a democratic candidate. Is there worried about maybe, you know, the economic issues and things like that, maybe those are the issues that they do lean left on, but they don't want everything else that comes with the package as well. Yeah. Excellent work. You guys always do such a nice job. I don't know if you know this, but at least I, when I walk through, always feel like the class clown walking through the calculus class.

14:39You know what I mean? Just like definitely not the calculus class. If you saw my man grades in high school, definitely not Calcula, maybe like history or something like that, but Ed Sean Malone, thank you Sean anytime guys. Excellent choice. Great music. DJ S and K. Because I think Dave could command the stage the way that he does. That's what I was talking about. Oh, but he can't now because we know. No, I'm just saying it doesn't know. Well, look, it'd be a fun look. I'm like, you were interesting to look at what I was saying. What's that? Sorry. I asked this guy here has the ability to do what that guy did last night. Because just doesn't know.

Kevin is the best I've ever seen at it. But I'm starting to learn Kevin's strategies a little bit. I've started as I've spent enough time with him now that I'm starting to get a handle on. Not enough to get around him. Sure. But I can spot them when they're happening. Okay. And that's one of them. One of them is the classic getting louder, which is a tried and true. I do the same thing. Yeah. Works about half time. Yeah, but I also do that when I'm right. That's the can only. Yeah, that's my point. It's different. It's the same all the time. It's different. There's a different quality in your voice.

20:01Yes. There is. No, you don't think so, but there is. See, I don't know. I'm kind of wrong in that last thing. He's always loud. Well, you did change the point of your argument. Yeah, but I pay a compliment to someone and it turns out I was taking a shot at him. How's that work? No, you weren't taking a shot. We were just being how we always know. That's why it was funny. Well, that was all the loud last thing was for effect for funny because it was funny. There's also the. There's the twisting of the narratives, right? There's the seamless entwining of the roots, right? That Kevin is so masterful at where he will where he changes. He doesn't just move the goalpost as we often, you know, as we often say. He moves them, then moves them back the other way really fast. And then like throws them like a spear far back in the other direction. Again, like he moves them so fast. You don't even notice what's happening. See, that's happening in your head. Those goalposts aren't moving. You're just confused. Dave Hines says.

21:02See? Here we go. Dave Hines says, long Kevin is far louder than correct Kevin. Oh. That being said, I would like to hear a similar breakdown on Andrew from Kevin. Oh, I think it's the same. You guys are similar guys. Well, I think, yeah, we both go loud when we argue. I don't, I honestly don't know the difference between being correct or being incorrect because in the moment, I'm not thinking I'm incorrect. So I'll get loud. Andrew. You believe you're correct. So you're just arguing. So that is just the nature of my arguing. Andrew is more frightening to me when he gets loud because you don't live your life loud. Right. It's a little bit less jarring because I'm always laughing. I can get a little defensive in times mainly because I, my worst fear is being accused of something that I didn't do and I can't convince like the police or whatever that I didn't do it. I know and Roger and Amy have the same fear. Yeah, same fear. Yeah, I have a very similar thing where like I just, I don't know, I don't know what to do when someone comes to me and it's like, I think you did this and I didn't do it.

22:02And I can't, I don't know how to convince them. Often does that happen. When does it happen? Basically not ever as an adult, but it happened multiple times when I was like a kid or a teenager or whatever. And like my parents would be wrong about something and they'd come to me and accuse me of it. And I wouldn't know how to convince them that I didn't. Because you were a kid. Yeah, but I mean Rachel makes a good point. It really hasn't happened as an adult. It's kind of like Roger's big boat and a little boat that was never been in a little boat next to a big boat. No, no police or otherwise have ever come to me and is like, we think you're guilty. And I'm like, what a nut. Why did you kill John Bonaire? You're like, I didn't. But I don't know how to prove it. I swear it was, I did not steal the declaration of independence. That was Nick Hayes. I just took a little bit of treasure out of the thing that he found. I just went with him. Also, Andrew does not quote live his life quiet. I wasn't going to say anything, but I don't even know where that came from.

23:08Yeah, I had to address that. That was right up there with his head hair. He looked like Rob's out there. He was like, oh, I do. That's nice. No, I don't think I did. Andrew's known for being very passive. Andrew was not about like correct versus incorrect. It's just like if he gets excited, he gets louder. That is correct. The more ramped up I get about something whether I'm happy or sad or mad or whatever, my volume starts to go off as I become more animated. Because the only time we really see you guys in your office is at lunch. How often are you some level of yelling at each other? It's not very common. It's not that common. We're more likely to be talking about video games or some stupid. Yeah, we don't get pitted against each other as much in the office. You guys do that to us. We're the toxic ones. Yeah, right. You guys have a problem. I'm looking at our area. Andrew and I are totally fine. Because that goal post. We might be yelling at each other, but it's not. It's agreeing yelling. Right, right.

24:09It's just the same page. It's just a hoot and an holler and back. Can't believe it, man. They blew it in that section of the bond game. What the hell? I'm not even going to argue that I'm not toxic because as can I just go it out. I was not there for the wig cover for the hair cover section. And I'm like, well, you said. I was not there for it. I think Dave was scrolling on his phone and miss part of that compliment. No, no, I was I was talking about. I was talking about. Wow. I was talking about like, it's keep coming. I said, like I said, Rob's on. I'm like, I was complimenting Rob's on me. Like, man, he owns the stage. He can move. He's like, he moves great. And he's like 60 and I said, Dave, if you just had that hair, you could do what he did last night and be Rob's on me. Complimenting that you move like he does. And I was complimenting the way that he runs a stage. And yet that somehow turned into. And yet if I wasn't bald, I could be a star. I'm still hearing it the same way. It's because you be on that phone, Dave. Because I don't see the difference

25:11between what you said to me or if you said the same thing to range, but it was the boob job thing. Cause you're talking about an appearance. I'm just saying you could beat. You could have been Rob's on me last night because you move and handle yourself. Well, like he does. They could have, they could have put Yes, you could have been a doppelganger. If you had the hair in the beard, I get what he's saying now. So I could have taken his place seamlessly. That's what I was saying. Had I been dressed like him. I bust not have said it very well. Because what I'm hearing is the only thing that stands between you and controlling a stage that all that. No, it's just such a shame. Don't have any hair. Leave it to this room, man. Yeah. 26:13I'm trying desperately to be Rob Zombie. Okay, Kevin is not totally wrong. What are you trying to say? Seems like the analogy you're making is like if I said the only way to be beautiful would be if you looked like Sydney, sweetie. That would be a different thing than saying. Yeah, but you really think that you can't be Sydney, sweetie without. For example, looking like Sydney, sweetie, you cannot be that person. If you don't have the look about them, what it what looks specifically. It's a rise. Come on here. Did you guys see her new sports photo shoot? Yeah, I'm really terrified of this commercial because I feel like I'm going to have to see it a million times while watching like football with my family. I'm looking up six million times. You got a wheel of back now. He don't know like she said. Didn't see this. She's sitting on a basketball rim covering her boobs with footballs. I think ironically. Yeah. And other parts with the net. Yeah. I think she had the basketball for the basketball one. And the kid football for the football one. She has a tennis one. I'm just going to have to watch it again. I think I feel like I'm getting the details right now. Yeah, we got it. We got to get this one right. And you should you should search it out and you can't need to watch it a few times. I'll submit a book report. But I'll be honest. I had a moment of like there she goes again. She's making it again. Me too. But then I thought, well, this is what she dealt. Like what did I expect? Well, to read what a William Shakespeare summits. Like that's not what she does. I guess we're not. We're we're we're we we've we ever really seen this at least in the last like two decades of an actress who is who is very

28:15pretty and has a certain you know phenotype to her who is like one way to put it. One hundred percent like no, I'm going for it. You will never see me with clothes on even on a commercial. I'm getting my boobs out. Like it's just not to the level of actress because there's like you know a lot of pop stars. Yeah, I mean, I did it. And like, yeah, pop stars models for sure, but like a mainstream actress who's like an a list actress in a lot of different movies and TV shows. Yeah, who's just like and you will never see me with clothes on ever. I got to tell you. If for whatever. After a reason the world decided they really wanted to see me naked and they couldn't get enough of me on fan dual ads. I'm not saying no. I know I'm the same. I have the same thought. I'm like, am I really judging her for this? She probably made at least $10 million off this. I mean, maybe not at least, but you know, she was she made a lot of money to do that. Like and I can't be over here like, oh, she's just well, she has what the people want.

29:20That's why they're hiring her in reality. Vast majority. This is certainly not all true, but vast majority of people that are in Hollywood. Men and women are there because of how they look. At least in part they may have talent too. Dave, Dave, I just got into the car he's driving here right now. I call it a Hollywood. I call it. The town full of steepish Emmys I'm telling you. By the way, I kind of knew this, but when 9-11 being tomorrow, I'm getting a lot of 9-11 content. And in the in the mid 90s, Steve Bush, Jimmy was in New York firefighter. And then he left to pursue acting. And the day of 9-11, he came back and volunteered and spent three weeks on the pile. Yeah. That's pretty damn cool. Yeah. Pretty neat. Makes me like a memoir. And helped carry Donald Trump off that pile. A few miles away. He was one of those big sexy firemen.

Non-medie fingers. Ponies are not baby horses. Ponies are their own type of horse. And a baby horse is called a full. Yeah. I'm not sure I knew that. Oh, come on. Horse girls know this. Okay. From a young age. Never been a horse girl. I guess I thought a pony was a baby. I mean, I knew a full was a baby horse, but I thought a pony was also a baby horse. There's this little girl and TikTok. She's three years old and she has a pony and she speaks in a British accent. And she's really cute. Is she British? Or does she speak in a British accent? British. She's British. And she's just so like adult. She's like, all right, my boy Jack. I think Jack's the name of the pony. It's my pony. And she rides around and she asks very intelligent questions.

32:25And I mean, I'm kind of against putting your three-year-old on TikTok for the masses, but she's really cute. Or putting the three-year-old on a pony, and that seems dangerous. Oh, she falls off the pony all the time, but she knows just how to get right back up. She's very empowered three-year-old. Get this. Charlie's Angel star, Tanya Roberts and her husband back in the day were swingers. And co-star Jacqueline Smith said that they once tried to get her into a threesome, but she politely declined. All I could think is if 14-year-old David heard this, I would have died. I would have died. I didn't give you as soon as I saw the head. I also did. I was bringing it in to you. I don't know. David, they did. What are you up to? I went up. I went up. I would have been in Spencer's gifts. I am dead. Meal time habit is causing friction between couples, couples who eat at different speeds. Huh, or having trouble. Really? Yeah. You think you moderate over time?

Eat at your own speed. Yeah. But you're almost out. Unless you're at a restaurant, you're always show on or something while you're eating something like that. Who's more annoying in general, the fast eater or the slow eater? I gotta go slow. I think I'm on the slow eater team, not on purpose, just because I can't stop talking in between eating. I have the same problem. It extends the thing. If I'm talking while I'm eating, I'm going to be very slowly. Yeah. It's not a choice to eat slowly, but when you have to get the words out, it's going to take the time that you can't be chewing on food.
