L.A. school unions announce April 14th strike date at rally. Would you let someone take your pet to Tijuana for a cheaper vet bill? California used faulty DUI tests for nearly 10 years, State Justice Department says

Good people, what's up, what's up, it's Questlove.
So recently I had the incredible opportunity to have a real conversation
with actress and producer Jamie Lee Curtis from Routines to Recovery,
True Lies, and a certain Jermaine Jackson music video.
Jamie is real and raw,
and there's something I really admire about her.
I am so happy that I'm the head-f***ing charge at 67
that I have the perspective that I have at my age
to really be able to put all of this into context.
Listen to the Questlove show on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
In 2023, Bachelor star Clayton Eckerd
was accused of fathering twins,
but the pregnancy appeared to be a hoax.
You doctor this particular test twice in selling, correct?
I doctor the test once.
It took an army of internet detectives
to uncover a disturbing pattern.
Two more men who'd been through the same thing.
Regal, let's be and Michael Manchini.
My mind was blown.
I'm Stephanie Young.
This is Love Trap.
Laura, Scottsdale Police.
As the season continues,
Laura Owens finally faces consequences.
Listen to Love Trap Podcasts on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
You're listening to Bill Handel,
on demand from KFI AM640.
Say a fight.
It is the Thursday morning March 19th.
Tomorrow, it's Ask Handel Anything at 830
right after the fork report.
And I can't do it without you.
And it's all about humiliating me.
Very important.
And so, how does it work?
Well, you get to go to the iHeartRadio app.
Someone has to mute.
You have to go to the iHeartRadio app.
And then you will click on to my show,
which is streaming.
And then in the upper right hand corner,
the microphone, click on to that,
and record a question 10 or 15 seconds.
And then I answer that question.
And it's usually humiliating for me.
That's the whole point.
And you can podcast.
It has to be today, by the way, for this week.
Because tomorrow, you can't do it.
Some of the big stories we're looking at.
The Fed has kept interest rates unchanged
to the chagrin of President Trump,
who wants interest rates lowered.
And therein is the fight between Jerome Powell
and President Trump.
And Jerome Powell is going to stay on.
We're going to talk about that.
And then some horrific stuff going on with the war.
In the Middle East, now you have oil centers
being attacked, transportation, as well as storage areas
as well refineries being attacked on both sides.
That is a big, big deal for sure.
The other big news that we are looking at is
the LA City School or LA School District unions
have announced that April 14,
we're going to have a strike.
And that was announced yesterday.
The two largest labor groups of LA Unified,
the Teachers Union, and service employees.
By the way, there is an echo going on.
If someone can, if there's not a mute on,
there is the yesterday, the Teachers
and the service employees announced
there is going to be a strike.
If no contract is reached,
the last contract ended in June,
and they have been working without a contract.
You don't hear it.
I've been working without a contract for like 10 years,
12 years maybe.
You just keep on going even without a contract.
So you've got 400,000 students,
nations that second are the school district after New York,
and 32,000 students in the adult school,
what it means if the strike goes on 60,000
essential district workers, teachers, counselors, nurses,
bus drivers, janitors, cafeteria workers on and on,
are walking off the job.
Now, this is at the same time
that Superintendent Alberto Carvallo
is on paid administrative leave following an FBI raid
on his San Pedro home,
and so he's been put on leave
and the budget shortfall.
So all of it is not good news.
And LA unified, I've been using as a poster child
for one of the worst school districts in the United States.
And it's not because it is badly managed,
well, it is badly managed.
It is not because there are school teachers
that aren't doing their job.
Well, there are a lot of those.
It's because number one, it is ungovernable.
It's so unwieldy as a bureaucracy,
a school district that I have believed for a long time.
It has to be broken up,
or it has to be administered in a totally different way.
And as far as teachers to concern,
teachers are so underpaid, it is insane.
Teachers are quitting,
not enough people are becoming teachers,
because it is just hard.
It used to be that teachers had some kind of,
well, they had reputations and good reputations.
It was Mr. Smith.
It was, yes, ma'am.
It was a lot of that when I was in school
and most of us were.
Today, man, teachers got,
they ain't gotten no respect.
They're all Rodney Dangerfield.
And they can't,
you can't say anything.
The teachers can't say anything.
They can't even talk negatively about a student,
because the parents come right in, threaten lawsuits.
There was corporal punishment when I was in school,
and you got swatted if you acted out.
Today, if a kid acts out,
the teacher has to apologize in many, many cases.
And it's hard to get people
to teach under those circumstances,
especially in the inner schools.
And especially,
and this is not particularly anyone's fault,
not the school district,
or certainly not the teachers,
is you have a huge number of immigrants
that have come over.
LA Unified has, I think,
62%, 65% Hispanics, Latinos,
and a lot of them are families
that have not come over legally.
And those kids have to be taught,
and they should be taught,
because that's the law.
The problem is English really is a second language.
And it is hard to teach class
where the students don't speak English.
And that's just a fact.
We're not talking about a value judgment here,
or let's get rid of the illegal aliens.
I'm simply talking about the factual basis
that it is hard to teach students,
particularly in the inner city,
that do not speak English.
And come from families where the families aren't,
don't have very marketable skills.
Don't have educations.
Don't push education.
Some do, but it's not in their DNA.
Why? Well,
once the last time you saw a highly paid
cardiovascular surgeon
who comes to Mexico sneaking over the border.
Bank managers don't sneak over the border.
You have people with no marketable skills.
You have people that do not have an education,
because they're the ones that want a better opportunity.
That's the fact.
It's a tough way to go.
Are we going to see a strike? Probably.
All right.
This is a story out of San Diego.
You know what people are doing?
Pet owners are doing in San Diego.
They're going down to Tijuana
to have their pets treated.
Same thing for dental, by the way,
but I'll talk that at a different time.
Mexi vet express.
Basin San Diego takes pets
to veterinary clinics in Tijuana
on behalf of owners.
Company coordinates appointments,
transports the animal,
provides updates to owners
while the pets receive care.
So this is story at NBC.com.
Actually, NBC San Diego
about a guy named West Daniel.
And he had three rescue dogs.
Noche, my my and tank array.
Hmm.
And he couldn't afford vet care
in the US and San Diego.
So he said,
I'm going to see a one on at least half off.
They're going to do full dental cleanings,
full veterinary visits.
It's probably going to cost around $2,000.
Even in Mexico,
it would be twice as much in the states
and the cost of doing it here,
of just having a pet here is in San.
It's insane.
It's insane.
It's going to cost him,
well, premiums cost him about $400 a month.
And if he didn't have coverage,
well, if he took the same coverage,
it would be $700 a month.
So he went to a veterinarian here.
Don't do it.
It's dangerous.
It's so dangerous.
Because those vets are not well trained.
Well, they are.
And so there was one veteran that he talked to
that shares stories of botched procedures
perform south of the border.
Because botched procedures aren't done here north of the border.
And the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association
was asked for a comment and said,
we do not endorse or advise on receiving veterinary care
from anyone who is not licensed to practice in the United States.
So you know what?
He did it and he is thrilled doing it.
Anna Jinski, owner of a mexy vet express.
They take about 80 pets to Tijuana veterinary clinics
each week.
And the demand is growing.
There's one,
here's the one that I find interesting,
because the one that West went to,
there was a taco stand right next door to the clinic.
And man, that is so problematic.
I mean, I would have second thoughts.
Taco goto.
That's very strong.
That's actually very good.
Lying to sure.
How much do you spend on your cats, Amy?
On one particular cat?
No, both of them veterinary costs and insurance, etc.
Well, until about three months ago,
it was negligible.
But then a little Shelby got sick
and now I've spent over $5,000 on hers.
Holy moly.
What cat in the world is worth $5,000?
My baby Shelby.
Of course.
A little baby Shelby.
A handle after your crack about having her stuffed.
Yeah.
Now your listeners are saying that they want you to pay
for Shelby's surgery.
Oh.
Yeah, that's going to happen in this lifetime.
And you've got two dogs, right?
How much does it cost you for veterinary care?
Well, they're puppies.
And I just got health insurance for them.
Okay.
And how much is that?
How much is that?
About $50 per dog per month.
Oh, that's cheap.
But then there are puppies too.
It's going to grow up like crazy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We have two dogs.
Their teeth are falling out,
because I'm not going to pay for teeth cleaning.
And if they get sick, okay, God bless them.
You know, you guys figure it out on your own.
It's just way too expensive.
Will, do you have any animals?
Just some ashes from old cats that died.
Oh.
Because it looks like you've eaten some of them.
Wow.
Wow.
Wow.
Wow.
Okay.
No, the cats are very inexpensive now
that they're in boxes.
Yeah.
They are.
They are, for sure.
I've got a row of dead dogs at my house.
Oh, she keeps all of her dogs,
and there are five boxes of dogs,
and she wanted to put them in the living room on shelving.
I go, if you think I'm going to have a whole row of dead dogs,
or dead dogs in boxes, you are crazy.
I told you I would design you some custom earns that look like books.
Oh, you know what?
Oh, I forgot you do.
You know, we're going to do that.
And you and I are going to talk about it,
because we're going to, the fun part is going to be just the titles
on the books.
Oh, God.
Yeah.
We're going to have a good time there.
That's wrong.
How about doggy heaven?
How about old Yeller?
That's not bad.
You know, we act.
I'm just thinking we can have a great time with that.
I can make you a custom menorah.
How many dogs does she have?
We have two dogs.
No, but how he died.
How many are we?
Oh, I think we have five dogs.
Five of them.
Five boxes of dogs.
They're a little short,
but I can use you a custom menorah.
Yeah.
We make a flat half dozen and a little while,
and the dogs are pretty young.
All right.
A Neil Disneyland.
To La, to La, to La.
KFI AM640 wants to give you a chance to win.
A visit to the Disneyland resort and make memories
that last a lifetime during Disneyland resorts 70th,

unforgettable.
Just keep listening to KFI for your chance to win a four pack
of one day one park tickets to Disneyland park or Disney
California adventure park offering subject to change and restrictions
without notice.
No, no, no, notice.
Yeah.
Got it.
All right.
I have a story for you.
A legal story, which I tend to be partial to,
because as you know, I am an attorney with a vast,
but very shallow knowledge of the laws.
Very wide quarter inch deep at best.
So this is a story that sort of grabbed my attention.
And it has to do with DUI tests.
So by a decade ago, there's a CME Valley medical supply
company that began providing the California Department of Justice,
your analysis tests for law enforcement agencies around the state
that didn't have local forensic labs of their own.
Big agencies have their own labs, Orange County, LAPD,
LA County has their own labs.
Well, you got small police departments.
They don't.
So they go to outside labs.
They outsource them.
And this medical supply company.
And when scientific went ahead and did the test,
turns out that the tests were, in fact, faulty.
So now you have a number of criminal cases across California
with it's potentially up for you review.
There's about 60 law enforcement agencies,
seven DA's office that were informed that cases in their jurisdiction
could be affected.
Now, the good news for the agencies or for the,
yes, the law enforcement agencies,
your analysis tests are rarely used to prosecute DUIs.
But there was an audit,
and the Department of Justice then looked at it and said,
okay, only a small number of California DUIs
in other cases involving your analysis
were really affected.
A tiny little number.
So boy, did they get off virtually Scott free?
And now it's up to the local jurisdictions to take a deeper dive
and see what they're going to do in terms of these tests.
So how is it that these tests are faulty?
Well, it turns out that the test kits,
this is for 10 years up until about now,
and when scientific supplied at these kits
that did not contain the necessary amount
of a chemical compound sodium fluoride
to prevent urine samples from fermenting.
So what was happening is that the urine specimens came out
and created a fine wine.
The, you know, 2018 urine wine
because the urine had fermented.
Well, when you have fermentation,
what comes out as a result of fermentation?
Neil, what happens?
What's the major product of fermentation?
Sugar.
Well, yeah, you're making sugar,
and then it turns to alcohol.
Yeah, of course,
but it turns out sugar
hadn't quite reached alcohol yet.
Although it's interesting,
because if you are drunk enough,
then you're going to pee alcohol probably.
In any case, these urine tests were fermenting
and it turned out that there was a lot more alcohol in there,
but the wine wasn't very good.
And that is what caused these false positives
or straight out increased alcoholic content.
So they're undoing that,
but you know, there are other tests that turned out to be faulty.
Breathylizers that turned out to be faulty,
blood samples, particularly,
breathylizers are not so much
because those are calibrated, I think, every day.
But you had blood tests where they go in the machinery,
you know, it's a scientific machinery
that does the testing,
and those could be faulty,
and there's a lot of those out there.
So don't drink, okay?
And drive.
I don't drink.
So it's easy for me to say,
actually people like going out with me
because I'm always a designated driver.
Well, let me put it this way.
They don't like going out with me,
but they do because I'm always a designated driver,
so they can get plastered and...
I don't drive drunk,
but I'd rather drive drunk than have you drive me sober.
That's true.
By the way, that is not an exaggeration.
You can ask Neil, he's been in the car many times with me.
It is not a pleasant experience.
I was with, in the car with you,
when you drove over a man's foot.
I did, actually.
And had no idea until I told you,
you just ran over that man.
That is a true story, by the way.
I ran over someone's foot,
and then I started screaming at him.
What are you doing putting your foot under my wheel?
And he goes, I didn't.
I didn't.
What?
