The LA King starts slow, stage of thrilling comeback, only to lose another game that

goes beyond regulation.

And for now, thought of a playoff spot.

Do the Kings need to re-evaluate their goal-tuning position, which is seven games left in the

Hey Kings fans, welcome to Lockdown LA Kings.
0:48
On today's show, we're going to talk about the Kings following the back-end of the wild
0:51
card spot in the West.
0:52
We'll tell you about some serious concerns surrounding Goli-Darcy Kemper.
0:56
But we start with game number 75 of the NHL regular season, game three of a crucial seven
1:03
game homestand, and the biggest game of the season to this point.
1:09
With a wild card spot on the line, the LA Kings were hosting, the Nashville Predators,
1:14
and things did not start well for LA as the Kings fell behind two-nothing in part to
1:19
some subpar goal-tuning.
1:21
Things certainly opened up in the second period with the Kings scoring three goals.
1:25
The Predators put two more in the net.
1:27
Kings went out four-three going into the third, but you felt like momentum was shifting
1:33
Just one goal scored the third as the Kings tie it up at four-four.
1:37
After a scoreless overtime, we go to the shootout, eight rounds of the shootout before the
1:44
Kings fall five to four the final.
1:49
Sports on goal, favored Nashville 34 to 33.
1:54
The Kings wrought shot 18-9 in the opening period, that was a season high for shots on
2:00
Second period, LA, edged out the Predators in shots 10-9, then the third period of the
2:05
Kings, 13 shots to only five for Nashville.
2:09
In the overtime, the Predators had two of the Kings one, and the only goal scored in the
2:14
shootout was by the Predators in the eighth round.
2:18
The number of shots on goal 33, I think good for the Kings, but obviously you don't want
2:22
to give up 34 to the opposition.
2:26
Special teams normally, I would say, being even with Nashville is a good thing.
2:33
The Predators do have statistically a much better power play and penalty kill.
2:39
The Kings were over two as were the Predators, and I thought the Kings power play looked
2:44
very strong on this one.
2:46
Faceoffs favored the Kings, they won 56.2%, 41 of 73.
2:51
For Nashville, they won 43.8%, 32 of 73.
2:55
Hits favored the Kings, 32 to 19, we like seeing that.
2:59
Block shots did narrowly favor the Predators, 16 to 15.
3:04
Kings are now 30, 26, and 19 on the season.
3:09
They have 19 regulation wins, they have 19 games that have been decided beyond overtime.
3:14
The Kings home record, 11, 17 and 9, and LA is now 6, 5 and 5 under interim head coach,
3:21
DJ Smith, 1, 1 and 1 on this crucial 7 game, homestand.
3:26
The Kings have now played 43, one goal games this season, 30 have gone beyond regulation
3:34
into overtime or shootout, and that has tied the NHL record set by the 2003,
3:42
All right, big takeaway in this one, and there was a lot to take away from this game.
3:48
Headscratching blunders, a steering comeback, both teams looking good and bad at times,
3:55
some wild gold tending, and I don't know how many posts and crossbars were hit,
4:01
but several, mostly by the Kings, unfortunately.
4:04
And I have to admit, had the Kings scored a couple in that damn shootout,
4:10
I would be talking to you right now about an amazing win for the LA Kings,
4:15
certainly not a perfect game, very rarely are they ever,
4:19
but had the Kings pulled that out after starting poorly and then having a big comeback
4:24
and getting two points against that team, I'd have been singing their praises.
4:29
So it feels a little disingenuous for me to rip them to shreds
4:36
for not getting one of those goals in the eight rounds of the shootout or two.
4:42
So while there are certainly things I didn't like about this performance,
4:46
and we're going to get into those, I can't honestly sit here and say,
4:50
I'm really upset either.
4:52
I thought, obviously, didn't like the way the Kings started.
4:56
I didn't like their gold tending for most of the game.
4:58
I loved the way they came back.
5:00
They really fought in this one.
5:01
They showed a lot of heart, and in the end, they just came up a little bit short.
5:05
I thought it was all in all pretty even game when it was all said and done.
5:12
And I guess when it's all said and done, it just makes Monday's rematch against Nashville,
5:16
even that much more important.
5:19
We'll tell you where the playoffs stand after that one point for the Kings,
5:24
two points for the Predators coming up in just a bit.
5:27
I think the two biggest things though I was looking for
5:30
was a much better start for the Kings than they had against Utah or St. Louis.
5:34
The starts to games have been an issue for the Kings.
5:37
I thought the Kings from an energy standpoint,
5:39
from a sense of urgency standpoint.
5:42
I thought the skaters for the Kings were better in the first period than Utah or St. Louis.
5:48
Unfortunately, the gold tending was shaky as hell in that opening period.
5:51
We're going to get into Darcy Kemper's eventful night coming up.
5:55
There was a moment in the first period where I thought head coach DJ Smith
5:59
should have pulled Darcy Kemper.
6:01
Kings are down to nothing.
6:03
Kemper had a really bad play that led to a penalty shot.
6:06
He was able to make the save on it,
6:08
but you can look at it a couple of ways.
6:11
Number one, there is certainly a standard that you have to have with your players.
6:18
When that standard isn't met,
6:21
and I don't think Darcy Kemper lived up to that standard,
6:24
certainly in the first period,
6:25
then there needs to be repercussions.
6:29
There needs to be held accountable.
6:33
Now, had he been, maybe the Kings have two points in the final wild card spot in the West.
6:41
Had he played a little bit better?
6:43
Had he started better?
6:45
But that wasn't the case.
6:46
Now, number two, Jim Fox said in the broadcast, and he's not wrong.
6:51
You also, when you're trying to make that decision, don't want to panic.
6:54
It's too nothing, and you're in the first period.
6:57
There's still two periods left to go.
6:59
And if you pull him after two goals,
7:03
maybe that doesn't have the effect you want on your team.
7:06
And you also have to think of the bigger picture as well.
7:09
How is this going to affect what we do from a goldening standpoint of the rest of the season?
7:14
Personally, I was for pulling him.
7:16
And I've said this before,
7:17
I think this has been an issue with the Kings all season.
7:20
I don't think that players have been held accountable as often as they should.
7:24
And I certainly know it's easy for me sitting on my couch to make that call.
7:28
But I just think that there has to be a standard.
7:34
And when that standard isn't met,
7:36
the players need to know there's going to be repercussions.
7:39
Now, Kimper kind of redeemed himself.
7:42
Maybe he paid back that faith that DJ Smith showed in him
7:47
because he was better the rest of the way for the most part.
7:51
But like I said, for me,
7:53
I would have pulled him.
7:55
I don't think at this point in the season,
7:57
there's no being patient to me.
8:00
I think there has to be that sense of urgency from the head coach too.
8:05
But anyway, this was a wild game.
8:08
I thought it was a very entertaining game, frankly.
8:11
And remember the other day I said,
8:12
I felt bad for King's fans who paid money and spent their time
8:16
going to that terrible Utah game?
8:19
Well, I was envious of the fans in crypto for this one.
8:23
It was great to hear the building being loud,
8:26
seeing the fans getting excited,
8:27
seeing the King's battling and showing some heart
8:29
and coming back and tying it up.
8:31
So there were definitely some positives to take away.
8:34
But of course, at this point of the season,
8:36
when it's all about points in your fight
8:37
for your playoff life, the results obviously
8:42
DJ Smith was asked about Darcy Kemper and his status
8:46
as being the number one goalie.
8:48
And he said, quote, buck, that's referring to Mike Buckley,
8:52
will make those decisions.
8:54
He's the goalie coach, but Kemps has been our guy all along.
8:57
Certainly we'll look at everything in every position
9:00
that gives us a chance to win.
9:01
And then he was asked, did he consider pulling Darcy Kemper
9:04
when there's too nothing and he said, quote,
9:06
no, I don't love the start by us.
9:08
Sometimes you have long presentations
9:11
and you're a little rusty and then it's a high stick
9:14
and you just start and it wasn't what we wanted
9:17
by the players either.
9:19
So no, not it too, for sure.
9:22
And quote, so again, DJ Smith saying he never considered
9:26
pulling Darcy Kemper after that very tough start.
9:30
There were two key blunders though in this game
9:33
that I think were worth pointing out.
9:35
And when you look back and it's a five four shootout result
9:38
and obviously it's very close to big mistakes,
9:42
clearly made a big difference in this game
9:45
and you have to think what if those unforced errors,
9:50
which is what I would call them,
9:51
were not the difference in this game.
9:53
And look, mistakes are made on both sides, they happen.
9:58
But I thought there were two at this stage of the season
10:01
and with these two players in particular, pretty unexcusable.
10:06
Darcy Kemper, the first goal he led in was a goal
10:10
I don't care if it's game two or game 82,
10:13
that just can't go in.
10:16
I want to say it was the first official shot
10:18
on goal for Nashville.
10:21
It was from a horrible angle, it was from the corner,
10:24
almost at the goal line.
10:26
Kemper seemingly has the post covered
10:28
and it just somehow finds a whole through them
10:30
and it just can't, it just cannot go in,
10:33
especially on the first shot of a game
10:36
in a hugely important game.
10:38
And that was bad and it did seem like it rattled Darcy Kemper.
10:42
Now later at the very end of the first period
10:45
there was a power play for the King's final minutes,
10:47
Puck goes down the ice again, it's too nothing
10:50
and Kemper makes the bad decision to come out
10:52
and play the puck and loses a race to the puck,
10:56
tries to get back in his net
10:58
and in the process he throws his stick
11:00
to try and prevent a goal being scored.
11:03
One problem, that's against the rules
11:05
and that's a penalty shot, which the predators were awarded.
11:08
Fortunately though for Darcy Kemper, he did stop that shot
11:11
but that was another bad decision in his part
11:14
that could have had horrible repercussions
11:17
for the King's, they could have been down easily
11:18
three nothing after the first period.
11:20
So the other major blunder was in the second period,
11:24
King's down to nothing and drew down in his own zone,
11:28
backhand blind pass up the middle to no one.
11:32
It's easily intercepted, got on a goal,
11:34
save made rebound gets put in.
11:37
That's the kind of play that gets you benched
11:40
and I've defended drew down to this year.
11:45
A lot of people taking their shots at him,
11:48
I respect what he has done for the King's,
11:51
I respect his career.
11:54
Look, that can't happen.
11:55
I don't care if you drew down or a rookie or whatever.
12:00
He's lost a step but what drew down
12:04
he's supposed to have is the intelligence
12:07
and the game awareness and knowing
12:08
when to make the right play at the right time.
12:11
Of course he's not perfect, there's gonna be mistakes
12:13
but in a game like this,
12:15
when you're down to nothing to make that play,
12:19
that was awful, just bad.
12:23
And those two glaring mistakes
12:25
by two veteran players, two leaders on your team,
12:29
I mean those guys are supposed to be different
12:30
makers in a positive way, not in a negative way.
12:35
All right, coming up next,
12:36
we're gonna talk a little bit more about Darcy Kemper
12:39
and what is the goal-tending position
12:41
looking like for the King's going forward?
12:42
That's next to mocked and only King's your team every day.

13:43
Let's check the lineup for the LA Kings going into this game.
13:46
And I was a little surprised that they did not have
13:49
the exact same lineup.
13:50
Of course, minus the gold tender that they had the previous game.
13:53
But there was one change.
13:55
Samuel Holenius was back at center on the third line.
13:59
Alex Turkot came out of the lineup.
14:02
I will say it again until the Kings decide to go back to it.
14:06
The fourth line that's been so good,
14:08
all season long needs to be put back together.
14:11
Taylor Ward, Samuel Holenius and Jeff Malod.
14:14
I have seen enough of Matthew Joseph.
14:17
No disrespect intended.
14:19
He skates hard, he gives you what he's got,
14:21
but it's not enough.
14:22
And that fourth line has been great
14:24
for when they've been together.
14:26
Need to be put back together.
14:27
Matthew Joseph needs to come out of the lineup.
14:29
I'm gonna keep saying it until it happens.
14:31
All right, let's get more into Darcy Kemper.
14:33
We already talked about the first goal he gave up,
14:35
a goal that just can't go in.
14:36
And then the third goal that it was allowed,
14:39
it was a drew doubt, he mistakes.
14:40
So we're not gonna rehash that.
14:42
The second goal that Kemper allowed
14:44
that made it to nothing.
14:45
I wasn't a huge fan of.
14:46
Brent Clark was fronting the Nashville forward.
14:49
He tried to block the shot,
14:51
which he normally does a good job at.
14:53
It got through him.
14:54
And then the Nashville forward had the puck.
14:56
And he was in really close on Kemper.
14:58
And then Kemper reaches and extends for the puck.
15:01
And when he does that, he's dead.
15:03
He's out of the play.
15:05
If he just holds his position,
15:07
the player has almost nothing to shoot at
15:09
because he's so tight.
15:10
But when Kemper reached, that was it.
15:12
He was out of the play.
15:14
And the player just kind of stick handled around him
15:16
as he was totally off balance and put another net.
15:19
I mentioned his mistake coming out too far
15:21
when he threw his stick and he was able
15:24
to stop the penalty shot.
15:25
The fourth goal was on a two on one.
15:28
This one was not on Kemper.
15:29
Joel Edmondson is back on defense.
15:31
Now he's put in a tough position.
15:34
But in that situation,
15:35
you cannot let the pass get through you.
15:38
He goes down to a knee, his stick is on the ice.
15:40
And just as the pass is made through him,
15:44
he lifts his stick up.
15:46
And the pass goes right by him and it's a tap in goal.
15:49
And Darcy Kemper has no chance on that one.
15:54
Then the Kings go to his shootout.
15:55
And I'm like, this is gonna end quickly
15:57
because Darcy Kemper stinks in shootouts.
16:00
And he was amazing.
16:03
Stopped the first seven shooters he saw
16:05
and looked like he was a rock.
16:07
The bad news was UCSAR was the owner of the net
16:11
who also wasn't great during regulation.
16:16
It was such a weird game.
16:18
The goal tending during regulation was spotty.
16:22
And then in the shootout, they were unbeatable.
16:25
So the bigger picture though here is
16:27
and I've gone back and forth on this a little bit.
16:30
And I've talked about how the numbers
16:32
before this game were pretty even.
16:35
But I still, the eyeball test to me
16:37
says Anton Forsberg is playing better than Darcy Kemper.
16:41
So the rematch coming upon Monday,
16:44
I'm putting Anton Forsberg in net.
16:46
I don't know what the King's gonna do,
16:49
And of course, DJ Smith was asked about it
16:52
and he said apparently Mike Buckley,
16:53
the goalie coach makes that decision,
16:54
which is interesting.
16:56
Adrian Kemp Bay scored two goals.
16:58
He hits 30 on the season.
16:59
He now has 65 points.
17:01
Fourth time in his career,
17:02
he has scored 30 or more goals in a season.
17:04
His first goalie goes hard to the net.
17:06
He gets taken down as the pass is coming to him
17:09
as Artemis Pinarin is falling down.
17:11
It goes off of Kemp Bay's skate
17:13
as he's kind of sliding into the second base there
17:15
where the goalie was.
17:17
No distinct kicking motion.
17:19
That's a good goal for Pinarin.
17:21
He gets his 51st assist on the season.
17:23
And now in 19 games with the Kings, he's got 20 points.
17:27
The second goal for Adrian Kemp Bay,
17:29
Joel Edmondson puts a shot towards the net.
17:31
It was blocked by a Predator's defender,
17:33
but the rebound went right to Kemp Bay
17:35
who puts it in for the second goal of the game for him.
17:39
Joel Armia also had a 2.9.
17:41
He had a goal and an assist on his goal,
17:44
rookie Jared Wright jumps up into the play
17:46
on a three on two, puts the shot on.
17:49
It trickles through the pad of goalie, UC Saros.
17:51
It was sitting there in the crease
17:52
and there's Joel Armia going to the net,
17:55
taps in and over the goal line for the goal.
17:58
That's 11 goals and 23 points now on the season
18:02
Scott Lawton scored the Kings third goal.
18:04
Joel Armia, this was his assist.
18:06
He puts the shot on net.
18:08
I don't know if it hits something on the way in.
18:10
It was kind of through traffic.
18:11
It looked like it was kind of wobbling.
18:13
And it came off the pad of UC Saros
18:16
and was a fat rebound for Scott Lawton.
18:18
And he was right there and he left no doubt.
18:22
14 games for Lawton with the Kings.
18:25
He's got four goals and six points.
18:27
Overall in the season, he has 12 goals and 18 points.
18:30
He also won 14 face-offs, lost nine.
18:33
In this game, we haven't talked too much about it.
18:36
I think I've mentioned it maybe once,
18:37
but Lawton is a UFA at the end of the season.
18:39
So the Kings, if they want to retain him,
18:41
they'll have to resign in.
18:43
And I would like to see the Kings Resign Scott Lawton.
18:45
I really like what he brings to the team.
18:47
I love him in the face-off circle.
18:49
I think he's very responsible defensively.
18:51
He brings a lot of energy, seems smart.
18:53
And then from what everyone says,
18:55
he's absolutely beloved in the locker room
18:57
and the Kings could use some of that.
18:58
So he's making or he made 1.5 million this season.
19:02
That's not a lot of money.
19:03
I can't imagine he's going to be looking
19:05
for a lot more than that.
19:08
So if he's willing to sign for two,
19:11
I'd be more than happy for the Kings Resign.
19:13
I've liked him a lot as a third-line center.
19:15
Ajay Kopitar had a secondary assist
19:17
on the second goal by Adrian Kempe.
19:21
I did like that after the game.
19:24
Ajay Kopitar was asked something like,
19:26
have you thought about that you only
19:28
have seven games left in the season?
19:30
And he responded, I plan on playing more than seven games,
19:34
which I did like that answer.
19:36
But of course, before this game, Ajay Kopitar was honored.
19:40
I don't know why this game, they decided to do it.
19:43
I know I saw some Predators fans complaining about it.
19:45
Well, they can suck it.
19:48
But it was odd that this first home game,
19:54
or I should say it was odd that they didn't do it.
19:57
The first home game after he broke the record
19:59
and became the King's All-Time League of Score.
20:01
Or you could certainly understand why
20:03
why not have Ajay Kopitar Appreciation Night
20:06
for the final home game on April 11th against Deloitte?
20:09
Now I know there's fan appreciation night.
20:11
I think we can do both.
20:12
We'd have the pre-game ceremony for Kopitar before the game.
20:16
You have all of the giveaways during the game
20:18
and at the end of the game, they do the jersey off the back thing.
20:22
I don't know why they picked this game.
20:24
Maybe somebody knows I have no idea why.
20:26
It was a nice ceremony.
20:28
We're all celebrating Ajay Kopitar's career
20:33
in becoming the King's All-Time Leading Score.
20:35
What are we doing given out these weird sunglasses?
20:42
There's no commemorative, I don't know, poster or something.
20:47
I saw the sunglasses they gave out.
20:50
They were very weird looking.
20:51
If you gave me those, I wouldn't wear them.
20:55
I just thought that's what we're giving away to the fans
20:58
to celebrate Ajay Kopitar's career,
20:59
some bizarre looking sunglasses.
21:03
We talked about the last game.
21:05
We had the switch of the defensive pairs.
21:08
Cody C.C. with Mikey Anderson.
21:10
Brian Dumolin with Drew Dowdy.
21:12
They started with that pair.
21:14
And then at some point during the game
21:16
in the middle of the game, I did notice they switched back.
21:19
Dowdy and Anderson back together.
21:21
Dumolin and C.C. back together.
21:23
I don't think it had anything to do with players
21:25
playing on special teams and having
21:27
to change things up right after that, something like that.
21:29
So yeah, it was played with from what I saw during the game.
21:35
So evidently, they're not necessarily
21:38
all that thrilled with how that change is gone.
21:42
As for the four players, Dowdy Dumolin and Anderson
21:47
were all even on the night.
21:48
Cody C.C. was actually a plus one.
21:51
All right, checking the final player stats.
21:52
And this one, two goals for Adrian Kempe,
21:55
Scott Lotton and Joel Armea goals as well,
21:57
assists for Joel Armea, Anjie Kobatara,
21:59
Temi Pinarian, Jared Wright, Mikey Anderson,
22:02
Brian Dumolin and Joel Edminton.
22:04
Alex LaFarrier had five shots on goal to lead the team.
22:07
And he had four hits to lead the team as well.
22:10
Quinn Byfield, Brandt Clark, Drew Dowdy, Brian Dumolin,
22:12
Joel Edminton all had two blocked shots.
22:15
Drew Dowdy led the Kings and Ice time,
22:17
26 minutes and 11 seconds.
22:21
And Anjie Kobatara,
22:22
116 face-offs in loss 10, 63.3%.
22:26
All right, where are the LA Kings now?

23:57
All right, wanna check the scoreboard on Thursday.
24:03
The sharks beat the Maple Leafs 4-1.
24:06
Maple Leafs are the team that the Kings are playing next
24:08
coming up on Saturday.
24:09
The Golden Knights down the Flam 6-3.
24:11
Jets lose to the stars, three nothing,
24:13
and the crack and fall to the mammoth.
24:16
So let's check the updated standings
24:18
in the Pacific Division.
24:21
The ducks are now tied with the Oilers,
24:25
Now I do think it's a bit of a long shot
24:27
for the Kings to catch the biggest Golden Knights,
24:30
but if they were to, I think we're all thinking,
24:34
ah, we have to play the Oilers again.
24:36
Man, not necessarily the ducks might slip down
24:39
to that number two spot.
24:40
That would be a lovely matchup for the LA Kings.
24:44
But anyway, Ed and Brea though would have a heart attack.
24:47
The Golden Knights are three points back
24:49
on both the Oilers and the ducks for the top spot
24:53
or the second spot.
24:54
The sharks with their win have 79 points just like the Kings,
24:59
because San Jose has played one fewer game.
25:02
They also have more regulation wins than the Kings.
25:04
They would have the tiebreaker.
25:05
As we've talked about many times,
25:07
Kings don't have the tiebreaker in any situation.
25:09
So they have to finish ahead of teams
25:12
like the sharks or the predators.
25:14
Crackin have 75 points.
25:16
They're four points back of LA and San Jose
25:19
and their playoff hopes are on life support.
25:21
As for the wild card race, San Jose
25:24
is holding that second wild card spot,
25:26
but they are tied with the predators
25:28
and the Kings all at 79 points.
25:31
But as I mentioned, the sharks have a game in hand
25:34
and the predators and sharks both have the tiebreaker
25:38
So LA is right there in points,
25:39
but they have to finish ahead of Nashville and San Jose.
25:44
And then Winnipeg Jets are kind of hanging around there
25:45
three points behind or the final wild card spot.
25:51
All right, a bit of Kings news to pass along.
25:54
And I think it's an exciting news.
25:56
The Kings have signed Goldie Prospect Hampton-Sleukinsky
25:59
to a three-year entry-level deal.
26:01
They also signed his brother Grant to a contract as well.
26:03
So I'm guessing there's a lot of Kings gear
26:06
being bought in the Slukinsky household.
26:09
For Hampton, great, but brief college career,
26:12
won a national championship at Western Michigan
26:14
two seasons with the Broncos.
26:16
The Kings now have Hampton-Sleukinsky and Carter George
26:20
ready to turn pro next season.
26:23
I had said I would not have been surprised
26:25
if Slukinsky would have played out his college career,
26:28
become a free agent and then signed with any team he wanted to,
26:31
but clearly he didn't want to wait.
26:33
He wanted to turn pro.
26:35
And I think it's a good sign that he is not afraid
26:38
to compete for the Kings, you know, a spot with the Kings
26:44
or with the Rain or whatever the situation is going to be
26:47
with Carter George.
26:48
So, you know, made the best Goldie win,
26:50
but there are two really good young Goldies in the King's system.
26:54
And we'll see how it plays out.
26:56
Of course, you throw in Eric Portillo in there as well.
26:59
Certainly would think something's got to give
27:01
between Darcy Kemper and Anton Forsberg.
27:04
And frankly, the way Kemper has looked this season,
27:06
I think I'd be inclined to move him.
27:08
Of course, he makes, you know, twice as much as Forsberg.
27:11
He makes over five million a year as Darcy Kemper.
27:14
So that certainly factors in as well.
27:18
So we'll see worth keeping an eye on.
27:20
All right, up next the Kings are going to host the Toronto
27:22
Maple Leafs on Saturday.
27:23
Maple Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs
27:25
with their loss on Thursday.
27:27
This is a must win game for the Kings.
27:30
And would be great for them to just take care of business,
27:32
make it easy on us, but we know better than that, right?
27:35
And then of course, the rematch against the Predators
27:39
Thanks for tuning in.
