Hello, Lakers Nation. Welcome into theLakersNation.com podcast. My name is Trevor Leigh,
and say it with me. It's Game Day Lakers Pistons. 4 p.m. Pacific Time Tonight in the Lakers.
Push their winning streak to 10 games. We'll be live tonight on the channel,
breaking down the game. As it happens, doing a little play-by-play. 4 p.m. Pacific Time Tonight,
come hang out. It's like a party. We've got a lot to get into on today's show.
The injury update, including a non-injury, but very important update involving Luke Adonchitz.
I'll talk about in just a moment. Plus, we got to get into the standings watch. We had some
things happen last night in the Western Conference that make things a little bit more difficult,
I think, for the Lakers. And then we'll get into the keys to Victory. So let's dive right in here.
On the injury report for today's game, Rui Huncher, Marum Marcus Smart, Maxi Clema,
all listed as questionable. However, the big news, Luke Adonchitz is eligible to play in today's
game. Yes, he did get a 16th technical foul last game against the Orlando Magic,
but the NBA did decide to rescind that technical, which means Luke is good to go for tonight's game.
Luke Adonchitz doesn't shop on the injury report, but Luke Adonchitz is available for the Lakers
in this game against the Detroit Piston. So that's obviously a big deal. However, as I said,
the official injury report does have Rui Huncher, Marum, Maxi Clema, and Marcus Smart is questionable.
So one of those things is good. Two of them are bad. The good one, Maxi, that's an upgrade for him.
Maxi Clema has been out for the last few weeks, has been dealing with this back issue. We did see
him get moved over the South Bay Lakers the other day to participate in practice. Now he has
rejoined the Lakers on the road and is questionable to be available for tonight's game, and they could
need him in a game that projects to be very physical, particularly in the paint. They could actually
need Maxi Clema for this game. So Maxi is questionable. The two bad ones are Rui and
Marcus Smart, because of course they did play in the Lakers last game against the Orlando Magic,
Smart with right ankle soreness. It did look like he had suffered an injury last game,
but then it turned out he was okay. He came back and finished the game. And it looked like it was,
you know, a lengthy absence type of injury for Marcus Smart. He was hitting the floor and frustration
and all that. And then he was able to come back and return sometime later in that game. So
you know, it does look like any kind of significant injury has been avoided, but Smart is still
dealing with right ankle soreness. And then Rui, there was some conversation about it, maybe
beginning an MRI dealing with this calf soreness in the way calf injuries have hit the NBA this
season. Wouldn't shock me to see Rui wind up, you know, being out for this one. Obviously,
hopefully all three guys are available, but right now we'll have to keep an eye on it as of
this moment. All three still questionable for the Lakers. And obviously if Marcus Smart is not
available, the Lakers are going to have to shift their starting lineup. So we could see his
starting lineup change for the Lakers tonight. And especially if Marcus Smart and Rui are not
available, because I would imagine JG Redix wouldn't be my pick, but I think JG Redix
go to would be to slide Rui into the starting lineup. If Marcus Smart is not able to go,
what will the Lakers do? Could it be Luke Canard? Could it be Jake Lemavia? Could you maybe reinsert
Jared Vanderbilt and let him run with the starters so you don't change your rotation too much?
You'll be interesting to see how JJ handles it, but you know what? Hopefully, hopefully we don't
get the answer to that question, because hopefully Rui, Marcus and Maxi are all available for this
game, but right now all three are questionable. Now Detroit, of course, dealing with some very
significant injuries right now. The big one, Kate Cunningham, a collapsed lung. Absolutely brutal.
I don't know if we'll see him again during the regular season. There's hope that he'll be back
by playoff time for Detroit. It may be part of the way into the playoffs, but Kate Cunningham out
with a collapsed lung. Obviously, it's a big loss for Detroit. Part of the reason why right now,
the Lakers, as I just looked, are a two and a half point favorite for tonight's game, but that's
not the only player. Marcus Sasser will also be out for the Pistons, as will Isaiah Stewart. So those
are some pretty big, pretty significant losses for Detroit for this game. So the Lakers may be a
little shorthanded, Rui, Marcus. We'll see where it's out with Maxi, the Pistons, no Kate Cunningham,
no Marcus Sasser, no Isaiah Stewart. All right, let's take a peek at the standings. I said some things
happened in the NBA last night that could shift some things here for the Lakers. So we take a look
what happened in the standings. Well, unfortunately, the West teams around the Lakers, they all won
last night. The Denver Nuggets got a pretty easy win over the Portland Trailblazers. The
surprise, the Timber Wolves beat the Boston Celtics. It did so fairly handling you. This is a
tough one for me. It really is because it may be better for the Lakers for the Wolves to lose.
In fact, that we can say it is better for the Lakers for the Wolves to lose this game.
Yet it's the Celtics. Like I'm never going to feel that bad about the Celtics losing. Like in general,
I hope the Celtics lose. Basically every single time that they play. So I'm not going to feel
that bad about it. But in the standings, the Wolves win in a very loosable game against Boston does
not really help LA. Then the Suns got the win over the Raptors. I'm not that worried about Phoenix at
this point. I think there is quite a bit of separation now between the Lakers and the Phoenix
Suns. But nonetheless, the Western Conference teams got some win. So here's what the standings look
like now. As of course, we're keeping an eye on things heading into the postseason 11 games remaining
by the way, including tonight's game against the pistons. So the Lakers are the three seed two and a
half games up on Houston, two and a half games up on Denver, two and a half games up on Minnesota.
The really important column to keep an eye on. It's the loss column. We're talking about these
teams that are at the top of the table. The loss column is where to keep an eye on it. The Lakers
have a two game edge on Houston and the loss column, a three game edge on Denver and a three game
edge on Minnesota. But remember, they do have the tiebreaker over all three of those clubs. So
essentially, it's when I say a two game edge over Houston, it's really a three game edge and then
same with Denver, same with Minnesota. So still a pretty good cushion here for the Lakers. They've
won their last nine, which makes them second to only the Oklahoma City Thunder in win streak. By
the way, the pistons right now on a three game win streak and with Boston's loss, they're now four
and a half games up. They are five games up in the loss column over Boston for the one seed. So
they got to feel pretty good that they're fairly solidified in that one seed with not many games left
in the Eastern Conference. But in the West, for the Lakers, they're not locked into that three seed
just yet. But they have done a lot to increase their odds of finishing there with winning the last
nine straight. And then if we look at the schedule ahead, they've got the Troy tonight. That's obviously
a difficult one, even without Kate Cunningham, and we'll get into why. But here's the remaining
schedule for the Lakers. It three in a row here after this one that are super difficult to
Troy, but then you go Indy. That's the final game in the road trip, Brooklyn, Washington. And then
you get into Cleveland. I believe Cleveland's second night of a back-to-back after that Washington
game. But nonetheless, you go Indy, Brooklyn, Washington. Those are three tanking teams. Effectively,
those are three teams that benefit by losing. So hopefully, if you get the win tonight, push the
win streak to 10. Freight rail does more than move goods. It drives America's economy. Every dollar

Few things are as uplifting as the greatest moments in sports. And nothing brings us together
quite like Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games. From NBC Universal's iconic storytelling to the
innovative technology across Exfinity and Peacock, Comcast brings the Olympic Games home to America,
sharing every moment with millions. When Team USA steps onto the world stage, we're not just
watching. We're cheering together. This winter, we're all on the same team. Comcast, proud
partner of Team USA. Push into 13. You never want to take anything for granted. You don't want to
just chalk something up as a win before it's actually happened. There's a lot of danger
at doing that in the NBA because you never really know. You never know for sure what's going to
happen. We see upsets happen in the NBA all the time, but the Lakers will go in. It is very
heavy favorites against all three of those teams. So if you could push into a 13 game win streak,
at that point, you should feel like, again, depending on what happens with Minnesota, with Denver,
and with Houston, you should feel like you've got a pretty good cushion there for the three seed
heading into that matchup with Cleveland, the need to OKC at Dallas, another tanking team that
they do play hard. You get OKC again at Golden State. My hope for the Lakers is that by the time
the road game against the Warriors is in the books. They are the next game is second night of
a back to back against Phoenix. My hope is that the seeding is locked up by that point. And hopefully
it's long been locked up at that point, but at least by that third to last game, I suppose,
against the Golden State Warriors. At the conclusion of that game, I would like the Lakers to have nothing
on the line and be able to decide who they want to play if they want to play anybody against Phoenix
and against Utah in the final two games of the season. That would be my goal for the team.
Obviously, if they can lock up the three seed even earlier, that's fantastic. But right now,
continue to stack wins. You do have some difficult games, some real challenges here. Detroit,
even without kid cutting him can really test you. They can be a challenge. Cleveland and two matchups
with OKC. Those are the four games remaining on the schedule that look at say, OK, these are teams
that are going to play off caliber basketball that the Lakers are going to have to deal with here.
So these are games to certainly keep an eye on, but 11 games left. Lakers have put themselves in a
very nice position right now, not locked into the three seed. A lot can still happen. But they're
doing a nice job getting pretty dark clothes to solidifying the third seed. All right. Let's get
into the keys to victory. So number one, first thing that the Lakers have to do against the Detroit
pistons in this one. It is rebound the basketball now. The pistons are without kid cutting him.
What tends to happen in situations like this? By the way, the pistons have been resting all weekend.
They are actually the more rested team than the Lakers. The Lakers didn't play yesterday,
but the pistons are still the more rested team. They've not played since Friday. So the pistons
have had a couple of days off. But what happens when a star level player goes out is that their team
will see everyone else pick it up. Everyone around that player will pick up their play,
particularly in the short term. Usually it's the long haul where we see the the real effects of
losing a star level player because there'll be a short burst from a team that is almost similar to
the the effect that we see when say a head coach gets fired or something. You get that that short
burst for a few games where the team suddenly picks up their play because everybody hyper focuses on
their job and their role and giving everything that they've got. The pistons may very well still be
in that mode in this one. But one of the things the pistons do very well and how they are able to
overcome certain weaknesses that are on this team. It's with offensive rebounding. They are the
number three offensive rebounding team in the NBA on the season. And some of that is certainly
Jalen Deren. And that's going to be a battle in the paint for a guy D Andreate and we'll talk
about him in just a little bit. But the Lakers are going to have to rebound the basketball because
Detroit, well, they are, as I'm going to talk about a minute, they're not a great shooting team.
And they can mitigate that issue in part by offensive rebounds. And that's what they like to do.
They will crush you on the boards. In fact, when these two teams played earlier this season,
I thought that the pistons just out physical the Lakers. They were the stronger team, the tougher team,
the more aggressive team, not a surprise. And I think we looked at that game and chalked that up
as more evidence that man, the Lakers really just can't handle these tough physical ultra athletic
teams. The final score in that game was 128 106. The Lakers got crushed. I mean, the fourth quarter
was 32 to 18. There were points where the Lakers were in this game. In fact, they won the second
quarter. They were hanging in there coming out of the third quarter and then Detroit just through
haymakers, the entire fourth quarter completely locked up the Lakers and they feasted against the
Lakers. Now, ironically in that game, the Lakers actually won the offensive rebound battle. So that
goes to show up at the Lakers shot 28% from three. Difficult to win a game when you shoot that poorly.
The pistons meanwhile shot 63% from the field that game and 46% from three. Now, is that
sustainable? No, probably not, but that was also a very poor performance for the Lakers. I remember
that one that was a frustrating game for Lakers fans. But the pistons didn't really crush the Lakers
on the offensive glass. They did what they needed to do. Now, part of that is it's difficult to get
an offensive rebound when you're shooting 63% when you're not missing many shots. It's hard to rack
up offensive rebounds. So that's part of that equation there. But nonetheless, the pistons really
are a very good offensive rebounding team and the Lakers are going to have to pay attention to their
box outs. We talked about a lot when they're playing against the Houston Rockets. The Lakers have
been doing this thing lately, where whatever's been ailing them over the course of the game, whether
that's turnovers, offensive rebounds, what have you, they really clean up in the fourth quarter.
In fact, we saw them do that against Houston. I think it was the first game against Houston
last week where they were able to not only flip things in terms of the offensive rebounds,
but actually win the fourth quarter when it came to offensive boards. They lost that first game by
three. I think the offensive rebound column, which is fine. That's kind of what you're looking to do
here. If you're going to lose an offensive rebounds, which is likely given that's one of Detroit's
main skills, it's you just don't want to you don't want to get crushed. You don't want to lose by
eight offensive rebounds or something like that. You want to keep it close, keep it within two or
three somewhere along those lines in the offensive rebound battle. That will be one of the key stats
that we're going to keep an eye on. Now, the other thing that you want to do when it comes to the
Lakers defense is pack the paint, the Detroit pistons. It is a shooting as a big weakness of theirs.
I think they needed to add more shooting at the trade deadline than they did. I think shooting
is the weakness that will prevent them from winning an NBA championship this year. Don't get
me wrong. Don't hear what I'm not saying. They're a very, very good team. They're the number one
seed in the Eastern Conference for a reason. But I think the lack of shooting is an exploitable
weakness that will come to come back to bite them, come playoff time. So the Detroit pistons on the
season are 21st in the NBA in three point percentage. That is, that is not good enough for a team
that wants to be a true contender. They're shooting 34.8%, which is below league average from three.
And if you look at the volume, that is also very, very low. They're shooting just 28th in the NBA
front three in terms of volume. So only two teams in the league shoot less threes than the Detroit
pistons do. So they want to do everything in the paint. They want to get everything at the rim.
And when you look, they aren't even, when I say they're not a good shooting team,
they're not even a great shooting team at the rim either. It's part of the reason why they have to
such a good offensive rebounding team because they don't shoot them off particularly well.
They're a great defensive team. They'll turn you over left and right. They can get a bunch of
steals. They do a phenomenal job, but they can't shoot as a team. They're not a good shooting
team despite shooting 63% from the field last game against the Lakers. They're 15th in field
goal percentage at the rim. And they are a one of the bottom third team in just about every
other area of the floor. Ranked 23rd in three point percentage ranking 23rd in mid range percentage.
It's rough. It's rough for the Detroit pistons. They are not a good shooting team. So
pack the paint, pack the paint on this team. That's going to help you accomplish that goal
on the glass. Trust that the threes will, you know, while they hit them last time around and
there's going to be games where every team is hot from deep. The numbers are with the numbers are
and the pistons are not a good shooting team. You want to force them if they're going to get a hot
shooting night and beat you from outside on some contested jumpers. Paint you live with it.
You tip your cap, but what you don't want to do is let them do all their damage in the paint
and off of offensive rebounds. That's what you don't want to do against the Detroit pistons. So
that's a key for the Lakers for this one. Pack the paint, have that physicality in the paint,
rebound the basketball, control the paint and you will be just fine against the pistons unless
they do happen to have a hot shooting in. But again, you live with the numbers and you want to try
to force Detroit to be an outside shooting team. Now easier said than done. The Lakers perimeter
defense is not been great and that will be particularly a challenge. I want to talk about
point of attack actually containing on the perimeter. That's been a challenge. The pistons lived in
the paint against the Lakers the last time the two sides played and we got to remember if Marcus
smart is out that will be an even bigger challenge for L.A. So it sounds simple when I say pack the
paint, but it was not as easy certainly as it sounds when the pistons have the kind of athleticism
that they do on this team guys like also Thompson can create problems to my as Harris is a guy
who can step up and score buckets for them, even though can Robinson really buys into their defensive
scheme, their toughness, all of that, and he can create issues. So the another key pack in the
paint, but again, easier said than done. All right. Last thing, take care of the basketball. Why?
Because the pistons are very good at stealing it. They are very, in fact, they are number one in
the NBA in steals per game. So we look at Detroit and we say, what wait a second? What the hell?
Detroit can't shoot. Detroit can't shoot. How is the team that can't shoot? Number one in the
NBA in the Eastern Conference and by a decent margin. How is that pot is the East just that bad? No,
the East actually pretty good this year. So how? Why? Well, they're crushing the offensive glass
and their turning teams over a lot, which means there's going to be an advantage in field goal
attempts. Their defense is locked in. They do a phenomenal job and they live off of turnovers,
transition play, things of that nature. So you've got to take care of the basketball against Detroit.
They are great at forcing steals, which means live ball turnovers. They do a phenomenal job there
when we look at frequency of transition play for Detroit. They are number one in the NBA. So,
again, how is Detroit a terrible shooting team and yet the best team in the Eastern Conference?
How is that possible? They get out in transition more than anybody else because they force more
turnovers. They force more live ball turnovers and they get out and they run. That's part of it.
That's part of that's part of the equation. There's another piece to this. We've got to get to
them just a second. So for the Lakers, you got to take care of the basketball. Got to take care
of the basketball cannot turn it over a bunch against this team. In fact, we look again,
the Lakers did win the offensive rebounding battle last time. Guess how many turnovers they had
when they played the pistons? 20. Few things are as uplifting as the greatest moments in sports.
And nothing brings us together quite like team USA at the Olympic winter games from NBC
Universal's iconic storytelling to the innovative technology across Exfinity and Peacock.
Comcast brings the Olympic Games home to America, sharing every moment with millions.

20 turnovers. The last time the Lakers played the pistons, that is how you lose to the Detroit
pistons. You've turned the ball over a bunch. 20 turnovers. Five for LeBron in that game.
Eight out for Luca in that one. There was no Austin Reeves available for that game, but 20
turnovers in that game against Detroit. That's how they can make up for not shooting particularly
well on the season. So you got to take care of the basketball. You got to cut the turnovers down.
This is a game where typically I set the line at 14. You want 14 or less turnovers in any game.
That's that should be the goal for the Lakers. This game, I'm probably looking more like 15-ish,
maybe even 16, because the pistons are that good at turning you over. So you've got to give
a little bit of leeway there, but you can't let it get out of hand. Obviously, if you finish with
10 turnovers, fantastic. And the Lakers have done a much better job hanging onto the basketball,
since the all-star break, they've been been significantly better. But actually one of the best
teams in the NBA in terms of turnover percentage, since the all-star break, that will be tested
in this game tonight. They will have to take care of the basketball, not turn it over if they
want to get the win. Now, there is a flip side to this. And this is a good thing for the Lakers.
There's a flip side to this. We talk about Detroit. They like to attack the basket. They like to get
out in transition. Guess what? Detroit number two in the NBA on the season in free throw attempts
per game. The Lakers free throw attempts have dropped away down. They're more a top 10-ish,
top 10 adjacent, free throw shooting team, since the all-star break. But Detroit on the season,
number two in the NBA in front of the Lakers, by the way, just barely, in front of the Lakers in
free throw attempts per game. That's another part. We talk about the offensive rebound. We talk about
the turnovers. Free throw attempts is also how they mitigate their poor shooting. They get to the line
a ton. And they're not a great free throw shooting team, 76% from the free throw line. Again,
they're not a good shooting team in general, but they get there a lot. So that helps them out.
But why is some of this bad for the pistons? Well, yes, they get to the line at a ton. They are
ultra aggressive. They crash into the paint constantly. They crash the offensive glass. They force
tons of turnovers, but guess what? All that aggression also leads to fouls. So for the Lakers,
who are number three in the NBA in fouls committed per game. That means they commit the third
least fouls per game. The Detroit pistons dead last in the NBA. And it's not particularly close
in fouls committed per game. These guys hack like crazy. And so for the Lakers, part
of what they're going to need to do. We're talking about taking care of the basketball. That's
going to mean free throw attempts because the pistons, if they are not able to get the steals
they're going to gamble for will ultimately wind up that over aggression will wind up resulting
in fouls. So for the Lakers, taking care of the ball, not only means not turning the ball over to
the Detroit pistons, but it also means getting more free throw attempts because the pistons will
foul you. If you run your offense against them long enough, they will foul you. They're going
to be gambling for steals. They're going to be applying, applying ton of pressure trying to force
turnovers. If you win that battle and you don't turn the ball over, you're going to shoot a bunch
of free throws against this team because they're going to pick up fouls left and right. They're okay
with it. They're okay with their gamble is that while they make them more fouls, their net is
going to be positive because while some plays, they'll get called for fouls, other plays they won't
and those plays, they're going to get turnovers. They're going to get out in transition.
The opposing team's not going to get a shot attempt on that possession as well and that
math is going to stack up in their favor and that and it's worked. It's worked. It's part of the
reason why they're the number one seed in the east. It's a as I've been calling it a thunderrification
of the NBA. We look at NBA defenses ultra aggressive now, foul a ton and trust that the referee will
not want to call them all that they won't call them all and you're going to get away with a lot
more than you get called for. That's the to an extreme thought process of the Detroit pistons.
So for the Lakers, you cannot reward them for that over aggression. In fact, you have to punish
them for that aggression. I'm a big believer in punishing teams for their choices. The Detroit
pistons are going to be aggressive to a fault. The Detroit pistons are going to put pressure on
to a fault against the Lakers. It's on the Lakers to be poised and flip that aggression against
the pistons. Pick up fouls against them. Do not turn the ball over. Do not let the pressure
fluster you and that's going to mean five guys working together. If somebody does get stuck in a
trap, you have to make smart plays. You have to use your timeouts wisely. If you're about to lose
a possession, hang on to the basketball. That is going to be a big key in this game. All right,
the X factor for this one. It is I'm going back yet. Rui didn't really come through for me last
game. This game, it's DeAndrean. And by the way, D.A. did a even better job than I game credit for
on the post game show rebounding the basketball in the second. I had some really big offensive
rebounds against Orlando. D.A. is going to have to be big in this one again. And Eaton has done a
nice job lately at the outdoled Rui go bear. I liked what we saw from him against New York,
but DeAndrean is going to need to be massive in this game. Last time, the Lakers played the pistons.
Well, DeAndrean had 10 points and two. That's right. Two rebounds in 26 minutes. That can't happen
in this game. And I think D.A. is playing much better than the DeAndrean that played last time
the Lakers played the pistons. So I am optimistic. That said, he is going to have a fight on his hands
with Jalen Deren, who is an absolute monster on the boards. He is very difficult to deal with.
He's going to get some offensive rebounds. It's not on DeAndrean to outplay Jalen Deren. It's not on
him to out rebound Jalen Deren. It's not on him to stop Jalen Deren. He's not going to do that.
But he's got to be prepared for the fight. He's got to be prepared for the fight. And just like with
the offensive rebounding in general, the pistons will probably win the offensive rebound category.
Probably Jalen Deren is probably going to win the center battle. The key for DeAndrean,
just like the key on the offensive glass, it's not winning the battle. It's mitigating the damage.
That's the goal for DeAndrean in this game. Don't allow Jalen Deren to have eight offensive
rebounds because he can do that. Don't give that. Hold them to five. Hold them to four. Hold them to
three. That'd be even better, right? Hold them to he's going to get some offensive points.
He's going to get some putbacks. He's an all star for a reason. He's going to score points.
He's going to create problems for you, right? That's going to be a thing.
But you want to try to lessen the impact as much as possible. And that's where DeAndrean is going
to have to be very active, going to have to be aggressive. He's going to have to make sure he's
boxing out. He's got to have to be very diligent on the box outs. His teammates have to help him.
They've got to help on the boards as well. Luca does a great job. Of course, getting down in the
paint and helping. He's a phenomenal defensive rebounder at the guard position. But DeAndrean
going to have to be communicating, going to have to be locked in because you fall asleep for a
second. And Jalen Deren is going to rack up four offensive rebounds and throw it out some
bounce before you know what happened. That's Jalen Deren. So DeAndrean is the
extra factor for this game. If he brings toughness, he brings physicality in the paint.
He's battling on the boards. He's fighting at the very least tip of the ball away from Jalen
Deren. Keeping the ball alive, giving the Lakers a chance to get to it. He's doing those things
and it'll go a long, long way towards getting a Lakers victory. All right, everybody. Lakers nation.
Lakers pistons. The road trip continues for a Pacific time. Tonight, Luca in action, LeBron in
action. Austin Reeves in action. What about Marcus Smart? Will he be there? We'll see question
about right now. Same with Rui Hunchmer and Maxi Clee. But the one thing we know, I will be here
for P.O. Pacific time. Come hang out. It's like a party. We'll see if the Lakers can make it.
Double digits. They're win streak. Man, what a fun stretch of Lakers basketball. This has been.
We got game winners. We got crazy plays. Luke Canard hits a game winner. We got Luca Donchich hits
one. Austin Reeves sending a game into overtime. LeBron Duncan like crazy. This has been absolutely
awesome. Let's keep it rolling against the pistons for P.O. Pacific time. Tonight. Hope to see you
there. Tell that everybody. See you. And stay safe.
