1:15What's up everyone? Welcome to Level 7. It is time for another episode of the Agents of fandom podcasts. I have missed you all. It's so weird right now only doing one show a week for me. I'm used to being with you all so much more often, and so when we are here, getting to do it, it feels like an absolute treat. I'm TJ's Warritch, and joining me today to talk a little bit about land terms. I got my guy AF late at night in South Africa. How are you doing, my friend? I'm doing good, man. It's time to season, so I'm battling out here. But other than that, I'm not doing too bad, man. We are halfway here. We are in the final half of Lenton, so I'm super psyched to be talking about the show every episode. It feels like it just levels up. And dude, I'm excited. Let's get into it. Joining us as well is the brightest.

2:16We had the blackest night for AF over because it's getting late over there. I'm still the brightest day for Jam over in Virginia. How are you doing, buddy? I'm doing well, man. It is a bright day here, hot as well. We were just talking about a little off-pot. I'm just grateful to be here. You guys worked around your schedules to be able to be to join, to talk about one of my favorite superheroes. So I'm really, really excited to be here. And as AF said, we're halfway through, and man is just fantastic. This is how you TV, ladies and gentlemen. This is how you TV. It really is. That was a very strong episode. And I was listening to the midnight boys over at the Ring of Vers and Van Lathen was proclaiming that this might be the best superhero show ever made. And so I'm really looking forward and to dive it into this with you guys. Joining us as well as he has been throughout the season. We got Thomas Carter Rochester co-host of the Reckless Rebellion podcast.

3:19How you doing, GCR? I'm doing great. I'm alive. We're here today. Not stressed at all about fantasy football or real football on my work conditions or turning 35 in two weeks. It's everything's fine. We're doing great here. You know why we're doing great? Because one man understood the assignment and that was John Motherepn Stewart. Lanterns, we are 62.5% through this season so far. I'm trying to like, I don't even know how to describe where my brain is at. I'm trying to stay on the human level and not go into the fourth dimension. But I got thoughts. I got thoughts. I, you brought up fantasy football and it was such like an interesting week for me because obviously like, you know, my day job, my actual job is I'm a fantasy sports analyst and so

4:24I was playing a lot of daily fantasy this weekend. And I would absolutely load it up on my guy Tyward Shuck and the Saints with the Lions as well. And so how to really good day make it money wise. And then I look at my season long fantasy football leagues and I look at my work lead which is like the biggest money one. And I'm playing against Chris Alava and Jimiour Gibbs. And so everything that made me money, everything that made me money in DFS just absolutely beat me down in season long. But my dynasty team is going to have a nice 40 point victory and so at least one of them had a good league. Thomas, you and I are in a guillotine league together where the last place team, how a guillotine league works is you don't face and you don't, there's no matchups. It's not one team versus one team. It is everybody on the lowest scoring team of the week. They're cut. They're out. They're removed from the league and their team gets put on waivers. And so very first week in a guillotine league and who is my quarterback?

5:28It is Sam Darnold who got hurt on the first drive of the game and gave me a big ole zero. And so definitely have a chance to be cut from to be cut in week one. And so hopefully that doesn't happen. Dude, are you really quick? Do you want to know pain? Caleb Williams, Jaylin Coker, Devon Valle on my bench, those three together. I have 103 points in my starters. Those three together, outscore my starters. But then I've got what is it? Caleb Douglas sitting there on my bench as well. And JCM who did pretty well. It's okay guys, don't worry. I definitely had Zae Flower starting, Andrew Meer Gibbs starting and good old, good old Colston Loveland as well. But I need, I believe I need what is this? I was just about to say that.

6:28I need 15 points from Kim Bohn Walker tonight to win this week. That's all I need. I mean, so MCHF in chat says which fantasy player is the equivalent of John Stewart? I think it's really. It's really. I think the first thing I thought of was Jamir Gibbs because he's always been stuck in this. I didn't say when he finally gets his chance to shine, he is the guy. I was also thinking maybe like a Kenneth Walker, Super Bowl MVP, stuck in a time share. And now in Manipumora, we'll see John Stewart as the Lantern. And this year in Kansas City, we'll see Kenneth Walker as the guy. So those are the first two that popped into my head. But people are here for us talk about fantasy football. They hear for us talk about some great television. And before we talk about Lanterns, I want to know what you guys have been watching, reading, playing. So AF, I will throw it to you, my friend, what you've been watching. I'm going to start with some books that I've been reading.

7:30And the new Daredevil and I'm guys by Stephanie Phillips. If you aren't on that yet, get on it. It is amazing. She's basically introduced so many new characters. Brand new, never been seen before. And I think that the storyline that she's going with is just amazing. So if you haven't been on that one yet, get on it. The TV shows have been watching the same things that I've been speaking about every week. I did however watch practical magic to this past weekend. And that was pretty cool. I do think that Maisie Williams was wasted in that movie. You cannot cost such an amazing actress and waste her. So that was my only gripe about the movie. But that's a pretty good time. She actually played a much bigger role in that movie than you realized, but she can put on different faces. So you didn't know. Nice. A little argue started there.

8:32Dan, how about you? Would you been watching my friend? Cash, I feel like AF's going to make me sound very long-winded with all of the watching, playing, reading stuff I did. So I'll try to summarize the highlights, give you guys the highlights here. For reading to piggyback off of AF, I am fully caught up. Well, almost caught up with all of my comic books. You see the turn back for those that are watching on YouTube. I had to verify. But it should be proud of me, AF, because I... I saw you stack last week. Yeah, I saw that stack. That was like three months in. I am now down to 14 books in total. I have to read. So I'm like, I have maybe like a few weeks behind. I'm very proud of myself in locking in and getting those books read. I also TCR will be proud of me for this. I went... This isn't really a what you're watching, but I wanted to highlight this because it revolves around lanterns. I did something this weekend. And that is I went to get my ring size. I never bought an actual ring with my ring sizing. Need to know that for other reasons as well.

9:34And I... Yes, I got my ring size so I can get that lanterns ring off the DC shop for the show that we are talking about because it's absolutely fantastic. And later on, there is a shot specifically that made me immediately. I said, I know I need this ring. But to answer your question, TJ, what I've been watching besides the wonderful show that we are here to talk about today. I'll keep it brief. Let's focus on Apple TV and Prime Video. Loving, loving, loving, or richer, so much, man. It's such a great time. Shout out to our friend Sean Matsu who did the review for us. This was absolutely good. I think every season, I've been trying to relive season one. And this season is the one that I'm like, oh, this is the best season out of the whole series so far. So I want to actually expand on reach for a little bit because it's such a fascinating show to me because I think they've kind of perfected.

10:38I don't want to say trash TV because it feels too derogatory, but maybe popcorn TV. Where like, storytelling quality, this is nowhere near as good as lanterns. It's nowhere near as good as furious. It's just not on the level of those types of television show, but it's so good. It's so enjoyable. It's so much fun. It's like from like a straight quality standpoint, it's not on the level of those other shows, but enjoyment it absolutely is. It's Fall in America. Make it Count. Yeah, I feel like I just go in there kind of knowing what to expect and those expectations

12:43are met. Sometimes it's like, oh, wait, you got me even a little bit further. So to me, that's good TV. But I agree. It's not in those same tier brackets or levels as those others, but it's just still a good, great quality television. This season is so funny, too, because there's something on what you're watching this as well. I'm all caught up. I'm one episode behind on Ted Lasso. I didn't get to watch last week's yet. That was going to be my other thing I mentioned. But feature I caught up on. I find it so funny how we're talking about those writing things. I feel like throughout the seasons, they take a lot of shortcuts. I'm like, re-chirp will just be like, oh, it's got to be this. This is happening because of this and this. And it just sort of out of nowhere. And he just has to connect those points to move forward with the plot. But you just go whatever and you just live with it. This season, they keep doing that, but he's always fucking wrong. And it's so funny because they've done that throughout the first group of seasons. Every time he does that, it's like, ah, he's got it. He's so smart.

13:43It's re-chirp. He's the best. But this season, he's just consistently wrong. And I thought that was a nice way if they kind of put that on the Ted. Yeah, it's funny because I also feel like that other guy, too, that's with them. He just says stuff, but he's kind of like, he doesn't really add anything to the equation. It's just there. It's really, it's like a really weird. Oh my god, guys, I'm a cop. Look at this whole character. I feel like his whole character is what we've talked about before. We're like, I think it was for the Avatar thing. We're like Netflix writes things a certain way that because they know people are on their phones doing something. And so they have to say what they're doing. That's how his character reminds me of. But the only other thing like you brought it up was on Apple TV is Ted Lasso and then Dark Matter. I'm really invested in Dark Matter. Season two. It's, I actually was wrong. I mentioned it last week, but I thought that this was a whole new season, like a note, not a book adaptation, but apparently there is some more stuff from the book from last

14:47season, the first season that came out into this season. So that's good to know like the actual writer of the book is involved. And I think Apple TV does that a lot with a lot of their adaptations of books. They have the writers heavily involved, same for how silo was. But that's it. We got a lot of anime. Anime is always in my wheelhouse, you know what I mean? So I'm super excited for that. And we just had an interview. We just dropped recently for agents of fandom here, which is the voice actors of Clevver Test, Clean and Alicia. So that is really it, man. I'll give you my last thing real quick, because I've been on a tangent here. But Wolverine comes out tomorrow. So you already know where my gaming is going to be. I've been doing a lot more video games lately than watching personally, like I've been playing just like the past. I finished Star Wars Zero Company and I actually did want to bring this up on a podcast. Because I can't remember the last time I saw this in a video game or maybe it's heavily existed and just not in the games that I've been playing. But I was so absolutely shocked when this happened to me.

15:50So I beat the game. I roll credits. I finish my playthrough. I decide to do it again. Because there are a few different ways that you can do it. It has the main, same main story, but like a few different side missions you can do. You can recruit your team differently. And so I go through it in a second time and I up the difficulty. And I also make it so that they have this mode where it's like it auto saves as you go. And so you can't your choices are permanent. Your choices are permanent. So you can't just like go back and be like, just kidding. I don't like how that turned out for me. Well, the previous version. I'm playing it on like 10 hours into the second playthrough, finally just getting into the good meat of the story. And how this game works is like you build a team of they call them operators. And essentially it's like you get some clones, you get some rebels, you get some mercenaries and you load them up on your team to go on these missions with.

16:50And if they get shot down, you can revive them. If they get shot down a second time, they die. And you can mourn them, but you have to add somebody else to your team. I'm going and I'm playing and the main character get shot down. And I'm kind of thinking like, ooh, this will be really interesting. Do I have to restart the mission or are they going to like have me remake the whole new main character the same way they do the operators. And then I just move on from there. Game fucking over. Game over. The whole site save file is gone. It doesn't exist anymore. Those 10 hours that I put into the story gone. If you die, you die. And I felt like I was playing Mario on the original Nintendo where it's like, doesn't matter how far into the game that you are. If you run out of lives, you're dead. And that's what happened here. I was 10 hours into the game and then game over. Save file gone.

17:50So I was like, hey, you have to do a tutorial every time you restart. And I was like, there's no way I'm going through this again. And so I just put the game away and I deleted it off my console and I moved on to something else because I was like, I can't believe this just happened. And so yeah, they weren't messing around with that game mode. I mean, you just got me with the, it's an nostalgic thing. But remember when we didn't have memory cards or save files? Bro, like games were used to be so hard. You just got to leave that shit running for like 48 hours so you can come back to it. Like when you got some time and say, oh, go back and play, finish your game. Everybody watching or listening here, that's just a show that we are old. That's what that is. What that is. We are old. Pretty much. Outside of that, I started like, like you said, Wolverine is going to be the next big thing on my list. I got to admit that like unfortunately, I have let the internet sour my excitement about

18:55it a little bit, but it's honestly not even the internet reactions to it. That doesn't phase me even a little bit. It's just some of the reviews that came out for Wolverine. And I get it. The how like how adaptable and vast can you make the combat in the Wolverine game? It's not like he has mirrors many things he could do as something like a spider man. I get that. But it's just kind of the fact that this is a linear 15 hour story. I'm all good for linear. But the Spider-Man games, if you want 100% those, it takes like 40 hours. This game you can 100% in sub 20. Like this game, this game was announced before any of us knew each other. This game was announced over five years ago. And like it's only that short. So that kind of disappointed me is like, I'm going to be done with this game in three days. And so that for that price point as well.

19:56And for that price point, exactly like if you're going to charge me as much as you do for Spider-Man 2, I want that amount of time being able to play the game. And so I'm very excited for the play of the story. I love Marvel characters. And so like this is just like exactly my type of video game I'm excited. But very disappointed at the length of this one. But I did start on former co-host of ours, Adam Blevin's recommendation, Blood of the Dawn Walker from the same individual creators as Witcher 3. And he called it like a top 10 PS5 game of all time for him and his game of the years so far. It's basically like Witcher 3, Esk in terms of your path, your choose ability of how you can impact the game and like how a unique experience. As well as the combat is similar itch, but it's a vampire story. And so it's a very cool idea of you have 30 in game days before you have to face the

21:03big boss. So everything you do, you choose to do, takes like a certain amount of in game time. And it's not like you're just sitting there with the controller by your side and the clock is taking is not like that. Like the choices you make impact the time. And you have to forge your own path, do what you think is important before you ultimately get to this big boss. And so everybody's experience is totally unique because it totally depends on what you do in your amount of time. And when you replay the game, it can be a totally different game in your section. Like I was listening to some podcasts on it and like nobody in their first playthrough got more, got through more than 70% of the map because you just run out of time. And so it's totally individualized gameplay experience. And so I've only played for like an hour, but I'm really excited to dive into that one more after Wolverine since I'll finish that one so damn quick. Thomas, how about you, would you been watching? Still a track. I haven't been watching as much, you know what I'm saying?

22:04Star Trek, the next generation, I watched a lot of that last week. Um, on Star Trek Day, I watched a lot of it. And then this weekend, I watched Star Trek season, the original series season one episode 26, the first appearance of the Klingons to prepare for this week's Star Trek movie. Number six, undiscovered country, undiscovered planet, one of those two things. Um, and then just just getting ready. I don't, uh, I watched some football. That's it. It's been, it's been, it's been, it's been a, it's been a stupid busy week. And I don't, I don't see any signs of slowing down as we get forward. So that is fun. Discovered country, shout out MTF the third. Um, appreciate that because I can't remember. I'm at the point where I don't even know what number episode we are on my own podcast.

23:06I have to ask Klein every time. And I'm like, what are we on? All right. All right. Kato, thank you. So yeah, I'm, I, I watched Lannard's twice. I am, I'm very excited because I won't say where or why. I'm not going to get it just in case, I think it's public and he can talk about it, but I won't say where or why yet just in case, but I'm meeting our guy clients weekend. Klein and I are going to be having our first in person, in person get together and we're going to go for dinner. And so I am very, very excited about that one should be a fun weekend. And we got a lot of stuff coming here on the pod as well. I just started getting sent some footage from the Toronto International Film Festival. Some interviews from Isis Shabies on the red carpet that will be dropped in here shortly. Plus, we got a lot of fun stuff coming our newest agent Matt Aguilar has some stuff for us coming in the near future. Episode five, we are now more than halfway through the series. This was really, really fun for me because I haven't seen the screener for this one. So I watched it last night live with the people. And I can't wait to dive into this with you guys. I'll throw it to you first. Spoiler free. What do you think of the episode? Like I said earlier, like every episode that I'll watch from the show, it just sort of labels up. And I'm left with like this sort of sense of how are they going to get

26:25better in the next episode, even though I know that they are going to do it. I just really like we got a lot of closure in this episode. We got a lot of like the chemistry between Howe and John. A lot of that got sort of taken further. So yeah, I just enjoyed everything. I enjoyed the ride. This episode was a roller coaster, the budget for this episode was probably through the roof because of everything that they managed to do. But yeah, I loved it, dude. Jan, how about you? You've been loving this series so far. What do you think of episode five? Yeah. Everything AF said. I absolutely loved it. Spoiler free. I feel like this was the episode that I became a fan. And what I mean by that is I feel like as I'm watching this, I love these characters and I know a lot of the mythos and lore. And so my investment is theorizing, this is going to happen.

27:28This is going to happen. This is going to happen. And like 20 minutes in, they threw all of that shit out the window. And it's like just enjoy the ride. Because what I thought was going to happen didn't pan out the way it did. What I did, maybe it did. But now I'm here in the roller coaster seat. Actually, I can't even say I'm in the roller coaster seat. Because my analogy with the roller coaster is always you can see what's coming. You know the highs, you know the lows, you know the drops. I don't know where we're going from here. And I love this feeling. It's a feeling of appreciation for TV where this is good TV because I don't know where it's going. The mystery box of it is taken away. I've always been a firm and vocal. You know how vocal I am about how I don't like a lot of television in the streaming era. Because specifically a lot. And not to sound like I don't like Marvel TV because I do. But I always feel like their shows, Netflix, to are curated to have that mystery box. Or like cameo reveal or like building up to a character becoming the character.

28:33And while I do feel like that, this is going to be John Stewart becoming Green Lantern. That whole feeling of, of theorizing and and and everything was just taken away from this episode. And so I became a fan just enjoying the ride now. And I'm really happy about that. It's a little bit of that surf Dracula format that we see in so many shows where it's like the show is called surf Dracula. But you don't actually see Dracula surfing until the final episode because he has to earn his surfboard. And this episode, this show very much looked at though it was going on that format. And then just flipped everything on its fucking head this episode. And so I think that's, which is pretty classic Damon Lindelof, right? Which is, which I thought was really, really enjoyable to like just get that classic streaming formula cut up and tossed out the door in this one. Thomas, what do you think of episode five? Oh, yeah. Yeah, they did the thing.

29:34They did the thing. They brought, I mean, I think I sent a text to a shot on my boy Billy Beggs. I think we were five minutes into the episode. I was just like all the theories are connecting. And that was still in 2007. So I loved it. Is the mystery box done? Jam, I don't think so. I think I think we've ended the, I think I think we've, you know, ended some and started no more. Yeah, yeah, you know, it's a nesting box, right? It's a nesting mystery box. We answered a couple. Now we're like going into the big one, right? We're going into the big one. The next thing, the Russian, nothing, the theory that like I idea that you talked about last week is very much with this show was because like Jam said, who is the man hunter mystery, Bob done, but you still got more dolls to open up now. And so I do think that was like a very accurate paradigm choice.

30:39And I also think like into the point where it's like from a mystery box standpoint, there's definitely more to go. But it was, and we'll talk about how and what got high boss, but like there's very specific things of like, here's your villain. Now that's going to shift. Here's your mystery. Now that's going to shift. Like, where is I think Ryan brought it up at the beginning of the show in the in the YouTube chat. This felt like it could have been the season finale. I'm so happy we have three more episodes. This felt like a finale or a penultimate, which makes it very exciting that there's still three episodes to go. 100% 100% and I don't know how I don't know 100% where we're going to go. But I know at some point we're leaving Earth. Based on like the season trailer at the beginning, we go to a planet with yellow lighting. It seems to have twin suns or maybe it's twin moons. And and we get not top sea next week.

31:44Is it a human heart? These are the questions we should be asking ourselves. So I'm going to ask it now. In the spoiler free section, I'm going to ask about next week, is the heart even human, man? Pinn, that will come back to it. I'm already next week in my head. I've already started plotting together what's going to happen next week. How does this child have so many so many questions? Let's start diving into full spoilers for lanterns episode vibe. If you have not seen the episode yet, hit pause on us, go watch the episode, tell two friends about the show, and then come back and finish it up. And yeah, we start in a flashback where we get the full reveal that Zoe is the man hunter. She has been, she has gone to this town to infiltrate it and basically start her own little cult army.

32:49She is going to come in, grant people their deepest desires, save them from death, save them from harm, and almost in a mefisto like way, make them sign their lives away to her. Yeah. And we get to see Sheriff Carrey's backstory here. She's coming in with like a very fun like, they're like, we're not going to deage her at time, but we are just going to make her look as 2000, early 2000s, late 90s, as physically possible here. Make her a little bit stronger, make her a little emo. What do you think of this backstory here, and then go free to go, Jan, Thomas, next. I got a step out for just a second, but continue the conversation. Yeah, no, I like what they did with Sheriff Carrey. I like that they sort of added some extra layers to her. I like that they brought everything about her father, who her father is, her father was the

33:49really sketchy dude, and he wasn't really a great father as well. Just like sort of small little lines that they just included in that entire conversation, just to sort of build her back story a bit more, and why she moves to to rush well to to get a fresh start to run away from all of these guys that's been like tracking, and sort of just start brand new. And I like the fact that that that we we know a little bit more about her now. And yes, we we we don't find out if her father is the character who we think he could be. We don't know any other ties in Gotham City, but it is pretty cool just to sort of get that bigger picture for the this character we've been theorizing about for the past four episodes. So I like that I like the entire conversation and the entire interaction with so we

34:49finding out that so we is the man that she's been setting up camp in in rush well, and dude that cutting off the pinkie scene, I was like, is she really going to do it or is we going to stop her before she does it? And dude she just went away and just chopped it off, but that was wild. I was like dude, I really like I literally thought she was not going to do it. I thought that so we was just going to stop her just tasting it to see if she's going to be able to like perform the air. So yeah, I love that entire scene. I love that entire interaction. Gem, what do you think? Yeah, to piggyback off of the pinky the other pinky thing, I actually I'm with you. I thought I thought she was going to stop her and say, hey, hold on, what are you doing? But to add on to everything you said, I feel like it really makes this character her own character. As you said, we know a lot of her, like we do, not general audiences, but like we as comic fans, we know a lot of like who, who her character is essentially and her backstory and things like that. And I think this show does a really good job of like paying, paying respect to like the Easter eggs and references without like them having to be shoehorned in on a background or like like specifically brought up. It's more so naturally involved in the universe, right? It's just naturally a part of this world that they're building that they've created that they've curated. And so for me, it's really just stuff like that. It creates, she's her own character. And then it just gives us that little stuff that we like as much. I also think that getting to see

36:50them, getting to see the manhunter, like getting to see Zoe do a little killing, like a little killing in the beginning of this kind of shows like her rootlessness in a sense of we aren't supposed to connect with this character or feel bad for this character like we will later on in the episode or like how they try to make us feel. And I think that those layers that they did throughout this episode, which this being the start of this episode, is showing how ruthless she is and how not only humanity has changed her over time, but really in this moment, she's still the manhunter. 41:12I want to I'm happy you transitioned to the scene with Hal stopping her car and that's interaction with Get between Carrie and Hal because there were three lines in this episode that I think are drastically important that has my theory brain running. And one of them is that what you guys brought up with the pinky. I think that was a very, very crucial scene that it does get chopped off so she could tease her regeneration tech. Because I think that is very, very important. I'm going to come back beyond fixing John's game, which we, uh, we're going to do that as well. But we have the conversation between Sheriff Kane and Hal and he's saying like, you don't get it. She's saying like, you don't, she can, she's shooting at him because she says like, hey, she can't hear us, but she can see us. So I have to do this showing us like she does feel this

42:14connection with Hal. She doesn't want him to die. She just wants him to get the hell out of there because she cares about him. She cares about her city, but she can't fully betray Zoe because she owes her. And I think it was very crucial who way that she showed we should, we saw the opening scene where yes, Zoe saves her life. But the way it cares like you don't get it, it was a miracle. I don't think the miracle she's talking about is that her life was saved. Let's talk about the, the elephant child in the room. That little boy's a man and hunter. That's her kid. She's very happy about it. Maybe she, maybe to the point that she even built that child inside of Sheriff Kane's womb. I think that's entirely possible too. That could have been where she grew this kid. But I think that little boy is definitely a man hunter. 44:19because you wouldn't embrace death. I think the only reason Zoe would put herself in harm's way is because she knows the overall mission is the survival of this younger man hunter. I think if anything, this she didn't she couldn't have kids or something like that. And that's the miracle she she could like like Zoe was able to make her have be able to have a child. Because I think they would have implied more if she was pregnant in this episode.
