A new report says starter home prices have more than doubled right here in Las Vegas. I'm Sidi Puga, thanks for tuning in to 787 this Friday morning. The City Council voted four to one to approve the change, despite pleas by many employees to delay it. Employees will move from the health insurance premium assistance benefit in favor of retirement health savings accounts. Assistant City Attorney Christina Gilmore said the police and firefighter unions approved the transition, which will also affect non-represented city employees. And Labor Day weekend is here and drivers should expect heavy traffic between Las Vegas and Southern California. The RTC says the heaviest traffic is expected on Southbound I-15 as drivers head back
to California on Monday. Peak traffic hours are generally between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. near the state line, so travelers are urged to plan accordingly. Start-or-home prices in the Las Vegas Valley have more than doubled in the past 10 years. This is according to a new report. Zillow says the medium price for a
starter home in the Valley went from just over $140,000 in July of 2016 to over $312,000 in July of this year. Now the price for a starter home is essentially more than $100,000 more than it used to be approximately five years ago. So that has essentially pinched off a major portion of first-time home buyers who would like to get into the housing market right now in Las Vegas and across the country but can't do so. A Zillow senior economist says there may be a light at the end of the tunnel because prices for starter homes are down just about 3 percent from last year. Olympia companies and Bruin Capital partners closed their purchase last week of about 940 acres in the Upper Northwest Valley for $94 million.
They planned to build Monument Hills, a community with up to 6,000 homes along US 95 west of the Toole Springs Fossilbed's National Monument. The first homes are expected to be delivered in 2028. John Katzellamitas is here to give us an update. Lionel Richie is recovering from a state in intensive care after a medical scare Saturday night in St. Louis. The 77 year old superstar needed to sit for the classic all night long and was later reportedly treated for mild dehydration. There were also reports who was being evaluated for cardiac related issues. The event follows a scare in June when Richie stopped the show in St. Paul, Minnesota and had to postpone two more shows on his current tour with Earth Wind and Fire. But Richie is now said to be doing okay at his home in Los Angeles and his dates at Encore Theatre in October and November are still scheduled. We hope to see him then.
