Welcome to today's Let's Talk Newton powered by the Knoxville Raceway.
0:05
Today we're talking to Jasper County Sheriff Brad Schutz about a new canine that's being added to the department.
0:11
So get in the new canine.
0:15
Oh, we used to have one share of how it was here for a time period.
0:20
But it kind of got away from it.
0:23
But yeah, we'll bring it back.
0:26
Yeah, now this one came from a long ways away, right?
0:29
Texas from Slovakia, how that happened?
0:34
Texas from Slovakia.
0:36
So found a trainer training program up in west of Minneapolis.
0:44
And that's where his dog supplies come from.
0:47
That's he's retired law enforcement canine from the Minneapolis metro area.
0:53
And that's he's been doing it many years.
0:55
And that's that's who he we get to the dogs from.
0:58
He goes over picks out the dogs and Slovakia.
1:02
And then they're shipped over here.
1:05
I guess they're out of Buffalo, Minnesota.
1:12
And who's his trainer going to be here with you guys?
1:17
He he's been on the department.
1:20
A little while, a couple of years.
1:22
And he was interested in doing it.
1:24
He's a good deputy, great, great motivation.
1:28
And he's he's up for the for the task.
1:31
Now they already been paired together for a little while.
1:36
June 24th, we went up to to Minneapolis and met Tex.
1:40
And yeah, they've been together ever since.
1:46
And he's got some training coming up.
1:48
So what's what training is he going to be doing?
1:51
From from what Texas just a just a normal dog.
1:55
Now he doesn't have some obedience in him,
1:58
but he'll be trained in drug detection, apprehension, tracking.
2:02
And it's a it's with a large large group.
2:06
I said about 10 other dogs and handlers.
2:09
And that's a 12 week process.
2:14
Now I understand that some donations helped make this possible, right?
2:19
We received a generous donation or grant from the American Kennel Club.
2:23
There's a adoption program, police adoption program.
2:27
And then also we had a local anonymous donor that donated to us as well.
2:33
And a vet service at a coal fax is going to be providing his veterinary care.
2:42
She is one of the founders of crisis of Canine of the Midlands.
2:47
Which we also have those crisis canine support dogs here in Jasper County.
2:53
But yeah, she's offered to to give him his vet care.
2:58
And so we have a supplier for some food for the food forum.
3:05
And so it's it's coming together very nicely.
3:07
Jasper County Sheriff Brad Schutz joining us on today's Let's Talk program.
3:12
Now the only dogs you have now are the like the crisis dogs, right?
3:17
That, you know, emotional support.
3:21
We had a German shepherd.
3:24
Danny Stevenson when he was here.
3:29
He later retired due to his hips.
3:32
I was sure it offered.
3:34
We had a dog named Popeye.
3:36
For a short time period.
3:38
He didn't he didn't work out the best and we end up getting another German shepherd.
3:44
And he was he retired with Sergeant Cross after numerous years of service.
3:50
And now we have tax.
3:52
And how do these dogs help you guys?
3:55
Are there a great benefit to the department?
3:58
There are great benefit.
3:59
Would you lie to him?
4:06
I text will be a member of the Central Iowa regional tag team.
4:12
Once he gets up and going and gets his training in, he'll start with the tag team to offer support.
4:20
Again, apprehension of individuals.
4:24
It's a partner out there with the deputy.
4:28
At any time if the deputies in the stress or or something is needed from the dog.
4:34
He has a button that he can head on his belt and the dog door opens on the vehicle.
4:41
And here they come, you know, to help their to help their partners.
4:46
I didn't know they had a special.
4:48
That's kind of neat.
4:51
It's a package that comes with the the canine kennel that we had to buy to go in his vehicle.
4:56
It alarms for heat detection if it gets too hot.
5:00
If the vehicle is shut down or get too hot, it actually sends them a page.
5:04
And to say that the vehicle is shut down, it's getting hot.
5:07
The windows automatically roll down.
5:09
There's an auxiliary fan that pulls air in to the kennel so he can stay cool.
5:14
A lot of different things have evolved since we initially had timber back in the day.
5:24
I'm sure it's going to be a great addition to the sheriff's apartment there.
5:28
It'd be great when he gets his training done about 12 weeks training, right?
5:34
A one down 11 to go after today.
5:36
So we're excited to get that white back here and develop this program.
5:43
Well, thanks for sharing time with us and tell us all about it.
5:46
