According to Education Week, the Trump administration is making sweeping changes

to the Department of Education.

They're moving large portions of the department's programs

to other federal agencies as part of a broader campaign

to eventually shut down the education department entirely.

This isn't just talk either.

The administration is actually transferring education department staff

to these other agencies through what they call detail agreements,

which are technically temporary, but can be renewed indefinitely.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has framed these interagency partnerships

as a way to prove to Congress that the education department's elimination

won't hurt widely supported education programs.

But here's where it gets interesting.

Many education advocates are worried.

They're concerned that scattering programs across different agencies

could cause funding delays and other operational problems.

Now, what's actually happening on the ground?

According to the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education,

there are concrete developments.

On March 19th, the Education Department announced a new partnership

with the Treasury Department to handle defaulted federal student loans

and get borrowers back into repayment.

That's a major responsibility moving to a different agency.

There's also a new Workforce Pell Grant program launching in July 2026,

which the Education Department announced in early March.

And the department has formed a fresh partnership with the Department of Labor

on the Talent Search Program, which helps students pursue post-secondary education and training.

Meanwhile, Secretary McMahon is out promoting education initiatives.

According to CBS News Detroit, she visited Michigan in late March

to tout a new program aimed at improving literacy rates,

specifically highlighting the education freedom tax credit.

The big picture here is that we're watching a significant restructuring

of federal education policy in real time.
