Lindsay Clancy Trial: Prosecution's Psychiatrist Says It Wasn't Postpartum At All

About this episode

Lindsay Clancy, the 34-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts mother charged with murdering her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — is standing trial in Plymouth Superior Court. Prosecutors allege she strangled the children with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, then attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. She's pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington is arguing insanity — severe postpartum psychosis compounded by psychiatric overmedication.

Today the prosecution called in a rebuttal witness with a very different read. Dr. Avram Mack, a psychiatrist who reviewed Clancy's records and met with her in April 2026, testified that evaluating someone's mental state means looking at who they were at the moment of the act — not building a narrative around it. He described a woman uninterested in her own hygiene, indifferent to hospital food, and largely withdrawn from other patients, though she did accept visitors at times. He noted she's on numerous psychiatric medications, but at low doses.

Mack's conclusion cuts against the defense's central theory on two fronts. He believes Clancy experienced a major depressive episode as part of major depressive disorder — not postpartum psychosis, and not bipolar disorder, since he says he found no evidence of mania or hypomania anywhere in her records.

Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands when it happened and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial is expected to run several more weeks.
