Howdy y'all.
Welcome back into attacking third.
We've got Janelle Ferres, my calls are boomy in the house.
I'm your host, Darian Jenkins.
We have a very fun show for you today.
We are recap the U of someone's national team against Argentina and their opening match
for the she believes cup.
We're going to take a deep dive into the match, pick out some of our favorite players of
the day and who stood out, especially from the earlier match in Canada versus Colombia,
and as well take a look ahead at the upcoming matches.
Now ladies and everybody here, thank you so much for joining us on YouTube or if you're
watching on Glossinet or watching us not listening on a podcast, we appreciate it so much.
First of all, you may have noticed I opened the show with a Howdy not to do my thing.
I'm not I'm not from the South, my call, this is more, I feel like this is more you, you're
in Texas.
I know.
I was a little bit jealous.
I'm like, okay, can we get a game for the US here in Texas, we could do the same thing
all over again.
I actually bought a cowboy hat.
So let's go.
Well, we had to open the show like that because Emma Hayes pulled up with a fit, a cowboy
hat.
She brought the desk a bunch of cowboy hats.
I'm here for it.
I like this Emma Hayes kind of dress it up.
You're a chosen.
This is such a good graphic shout out team.
This is so good.
Yeah, she gets a 10 out of 10.
Like, honestly, I was I was surprised, I was like, oh, okay, we're seeing a different
side of Emma Hayes.
And I told you earlier in the chat we had, I think Teri Roderman is rubbing off on
here.
That's a good thing.
So I think it's I think it's really cool as a coach to have like just this ability to
be you.
And because you know, at the end of the day, she's human.
So I think it's so it's so cool.
And it shows and how she the connection she has with the team.
It's massive.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, she expresses herself.
She lets the players express themselves and we love it.
McCall, Jenellie, who owns more cowboy hats between two of you?
You know, the reason I feel like you have some.
I only have one.
So how many of you got, girl?
That's a good question.
So I had three.
I moved, when I moved to DC, I had to sell them because it was just too much, I had way
too many things.
I sold like, like, the proper, like, proper with two half of my things.
Yeah, it was too many things to sell.
And now I, I know I don't have any so McCall is winning on this one.
But now I have two of here as the cowboy boots.
So maybe like those.
Ooh.
Yes.
Okay, you're, you're a different level.
I mean, they're like, you know, I'm not like out there in the mud with horses kind
of cowboy boots.
They're, you know, I'm like, I'm a cowboy boots girl as well.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
I don't own either, but maybe one day, maybe I'll get some info from Emma Hayes in the next
game.
We will see.
But listen, I'm trending there in countries trending.
It really is.
Who knows?
I mean, I may pull up to the studio with some.
You never know.
I may surprise everybody.
But ladies, let's jump into the match.
And first, let's start with the lineup because this is the first time Emma Hayes has not
brought in an uncapped player to camp.
She also brought in a very, very young starting lineup to open the sheep leaves cup starting
in the back.
Claudia Dickey left to write defensively, excuse me, Dalyne, Wesley, Tara Rudd, Giselle Thompson,
in the middle.
We have Emma Sears, Lily O'Hannes, Lindsay Heaps, Olivia Multree, and up top, we had a
two front, Jimmy Joseph and Jaden Shaw.
So when you first saw this, McCall, what was your initial reaction?
It's very young, but also different formation from Hayes, the mold we've seen before.
Blently, these are the people that she's up in the air about and that she wants to give
more opportunities so she can see more of them to decide if they're going to be there
next summer.
Do you agree with the same vibe?
Yeah, I agree with you.
I think these are people that she's still unsure about, except for Heaps.
I think Heaps is a, it's a no brainer for me.
I think it was important to start Heaps to give this starting 11 that experience that
I think it lacks, but it's also a luxury that the U.S. has.
Maybe this isn't your best 11, but it's an amazing starting 11 still.
Yeah.
It goes to show the depth that Emma Hayes has, but I saw this, not good on U.S. soccer
website.
U.S. Captain Lindsay Heaps enters tonight's match with 170 caps, while the rest of
the starting 11 combined has 99.
That's crazy.
That's insane.
And I wonder, just looking at the first few minutes of the match, you know, Lindsay got
the goal in the 19th minute, absolute brilliant, finesse, classic Lindsay Heaps, the great
Haran, as they used to call her type of goal.
To me, it showed a lot of inexperience that this team has, a lot of chemistry questions.
The buildouts were forced to me.
It seemed like it was something that was on the training pitch, but it wasn't exactly
playing out into the game.
I think Argentina did a really good job in their defensive shape, making it messy and ugly.
And when I think about it, it's actually kind of the perfect game for youngsters to go
into because it's more unpredictable.
You have to problem solve in the field.
But looking at the first 20 or so minutes we call, do you think the U.S. had a little
handle on it, even with the goal?
I mean, a couple of notes of it is, like you said, this is the first time that she hasn't
called anybody in that doesn't have caps yet.
So she, now she's starting to get more serious, start to think, okay, we're year and a half
away.
But then you look at, you know, players like Lindsay Heaps, who have a ton of experience
in your thinking that can't be their B team, but a year and a half away might be, might
be too far away for her to still be informed, still be in fitness and not lose a step.
You know, she's getting to that point in her career and her age where, you know, maybe
she's going to go with more youth and lean away from a Heaps.
And that's not who she's looking at in her best 11.
So, oh, I had a different take with her being in the starting lineup.
You were thinking she's just going to cold the glue together.
So it's not too chaotic.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I was thinking that too.
And by the way, Heaps had a great game.
I thought she was quality and she did keep it together and there.
But it also made me think maybe she is questioning if she's going to be in her in her best 11
with, you know, 18 months, 19 months to go.
Hmm.
That's an interesting take.
I hadn't looked it at that way, but now that you say it, I think it's valid.
It's possible.
I still go more for it.
I think she was like the glue that was holding this, this inexperienced starting 11 together.
I think that Lindsey Heaps, she still has a potential to be a starting player when the
next World Cup comes around because if you're going to put on a team, it's such a young
inexperienced team in a World Cup roster, you need somebody of her caliber on the starting
11.
For sure.
But then you think coffee, she's experienced, she can hold it down.
Claire Hutton will be in a year and a half better and more experience.
I don't know if there's going to be space for Heaps if there's younger, brighter players
that are in that six, eight position.
Oh, it's because you see here Jackie D64 is saying Heaps is a six now.
That's where she plays for Leon, but I was just about to make the point, well, what if
she's a lot higher on the pitch?
And she doesn't have to do the same defensive responsibility and for who?
For Roselvell.
Well, a lot of stuff's happened in space for her is all I'm saying.
Yeah.
I understand your point.
I see it, but I think to me, I looked at that as more of a nod of calm.
It's for Lindsey Heaps to go in and with the chaos that Argentina predicted they were
going to bring and that they actually brought to the game between physicality, the messiness,
the chances they could have had if they just they just got they had a little bit more
fire inside of them in the final third.
I actually think Lindsey Heaps probably organized more so than was more effective in organizing
and vocally moving people around problem solving than she actually was on the ball.
Yeah.
And so you know how it is, D, sometimes it's like when you're a youngster and you're going
into a game and it's big and you're like, oh, at least I have Lindsey Heaps next to
me.
Yeah.
So it kind of settles them a little bit, you know?
Yeah.
Absolutely.
Um, but we can go into this game.
It's messy.
It's chaotic.
Lindsey Heaps ends up getting a goal.
Emma Sears gets in line, cuts it back, sets it up near posts, beautiful curler to seal
the deal in the first half for the US women's national team.
And then there was a controversial callback where in our group chat, we're all texting.
Is there a VAR?
Because Jimmy's Joseph was not off side.
Jimmy's Joseph was not off side on that goal in the 21st minute.
Um, Jayden Shaw popped it in the middle of pocket, played it forward to her.
How do we feel about Jimmy's Joseph's performance and, you know, some of the younger players
that came in like Maddie Dahlene, um, Olivia Moultree even, we can count Jimmy's Joseph
some of those that are still very young into this women's national team.
I think Jimmy's Joseph, I agree with you, but I don't think he should have been called
off sides.
I think it was a great ball in for Shaw and it was a great finish from Joseph.
Um, if it would have been, um, called on, it would have been a perfect game for her
because as a nine, you have one job.
It's the score goals.
Um, and I think she, she would have done that if we had VAR, but I mean, you can't,
don't worry about that aside from that play.
I think she was a bit isolated.
I didn't see her connect well with, with Shaw or Moultree.
Um, and I don't think it's because it's not, she's not capable of it.
I think she is.
I think she just has to be allowed maybe more minutes, more time, but with such a,
a stack roster, that's hard.
If you're given the opportunity and you're only given 45 minutes to do it, you have to shine.
Like you, it's, if it's your only opportunity, you have to take it and it's, she's in a really
tough position for that, that number nine role.
Yeah.
And up until that moment, Jimmy's Joseph Sniffden touched the ball for the first 16 to 18 minutes
of the game.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, just completely invisible.
And so you have two questions to ask yourself, was that player not making himself available?
Are they trying to get, you know, used to the game and hiding a little bit or, or people
just not finding her the ball?
Is she not in good positions?
But I think for her, it was probably the latter.
She was just kind of getting her fields for the game a little bit.
And, you know, we discussed this a little bit before.
It was like, you know, if we were to choose the one or two players that we were most surprised
to see in the starting line up today and, or get called into the camp, I would have said,
even before they were the first ones to be subbed off, I was surprised to see Dalline
starting and especially in the position she was in.
I think it's tough, tough gig to give her as a young new player.
And Jimmy's Joseph as well getting the nod.
And, you know, they, they, they suffered a little bit today and, you know, usually getting
subbed off at halftime is an indication that, you know, you're not having a terribly
awesome effect on the game.
Yeah.
I think it was a lot of nerves coming into this.
It's your first she believes kept.
You're going against Argentina.
You know, they're going to be formidable.
They're going to tackle.
You're going to have to problem solve and change up your game plan.
But I thought that that was a big vote of confidence for both of them.
Hey, let's throw you into the deep end and we know you can swim.
So swim.
Let's see what you can do.
They got 45 minutes.
But before the half ended, there was also another VAR.
Well, but I would have said, where's VAR?
Let's go check.
Jane Shaw's hair pull 100%
tire.
NAP.
That is a red.
I don't understand that a red car is not a red.
We need Christina, Uncle, because I don't know.
I don't understand how you get a yellow for that.
That's not a wildly inappropriate.
I think the ref did just didn't see it.
And like we need better refs.
We need better refs.
Like for sure, it shouldn't have been a red.
I think Jane Shaw also was frustrated because you kind of like tries to kick her after.
Yeah, she shouldn't have done that.
So I think both of them, both these players, I think, maybe like maturity in that moment,
but aside from that, we just need better refs.
I don't want to get into this because then I'm going to get frustrated,
but it's something that has to change and has to be better because it can change,
dictate games.
Yeah.
Well, it's not a crazy.
We don't have var.
I mean, I'm quite surprised that she believes does not have you.
I mean, we, we take this seriously.
We wear every she believes we need to like keep this record going.
Like this is a serious thing, except for the one in England.
But you know what I mean?
Like this is not just like a Mickey Mouse tournament.
Like it's this is like a cup that we created that we take seriously.
Why wouldn't we just get VAR for it?
Yeah.
Fourth deconstructors said, yes, hair pulling is a red.
And I agree.
I've had my, my breeds pulled in a game and it was a, it was a quick red.
And it was so inappropriate.
Is the farthest thing?
Is the farthest thing?
Yeah, it's, it's pretty egregious.
But when I'm looking at a lot of these younger players, I wanted to ask you guys,
you know, they're thrown into the deep end.
You're going against Argentina.
There's actually something on the line.
This isn't just a friendly there.
You know, you go to penalties.
The points are different in this tournament.
And the US has a history of winning this consecutively.
When you're going against opponents that are pushing and, you know,
doing the dark arts and pulling you and stepping on your feet,
fouling the refs, letting things go, do you think that this was the best way
for these young players to find their footing in a tournament like this?
Like was Emma Hayes decision right to do this Argentina game?
And have the youngest squad be out there with Lindsey heaps?
That's a good question.
I think I don't know if she considered that aspect of the game.
I think in an interview before she did say she was, you know,
that the Argentina was going to be an aggressive opponent.
We all know that.
That's something that characterizes them.
But as a young player, that is tough.
When you're constantly getting shot,
they're pushed or your teammates are, it can throw you after a game
and it throws you after a game.
That's what Argentina is.
They are known for that.
It's part of how they play.
And it works for them sometimes.
I mean, it worked for them large part of the game.
I think Argentina was kept themselves in the game.
They didn't have any clear, clear chances like the U.S. did.
But their goal is to frustrate the opponent.
And they did that for moments.
And as a young player,
it's not the best way to try to start your career on a national team.
It's not but at the end of the day, you're a professional.
And you have to find a way to make it work.
And if those types of things are affecting you negatively,
then you have to find a way to mentally
and emotionally be better in that moment.
Yeah.
I think Emma, this was like very intentional.
Like, here's your going to learn the very heart of it.
I agree.
I was like, this is,
you already know Argentina and Colombia.
They're going to bring the aggressive noise.
So you need to feel what it's like out there to fight and compete against them.
Yeah.
Very, very competitive side and a big tournament where everything's on the line.
That's the energy that Argentina and Colombia brings every day,
no matter if it's a friendly.
So putting these young players on there to understand that battle
and get experience with that,
I think that was totally intentional and actually very healthy
for our young and experienced players.
Yeah.
I agree.
Well, I won't lie, ladies.
I did predict that maybe Emma Hayes would come out in a 4-4-2
or have two up top because there is sort of a number nine.
You sure?
I did run the episode back.
Go listen.
It was last week, like five or six days ago.
But I predicted it because looking at the four words that she brought in,
there's not that many nines.
Not the ones that we typically see with Emma Hayes or just a US soccer.
So I thought, this is the perfect time to experiment and try a two up top,
potentially a 4-4-2 when we got it.
We got it in the first half.
Did we hate it?
I mean, I think we've had a nine problem for a while.
You know, especially with Macario, isn't available.
And we've kind of forced her into that nine.
But you know, you think about back in the day when we had an Abbey World
Bach and Alex Morgan, like prop or number nine,
that just hasn't really been one that's come up in the ranks in the system.
Well, she'll be a four.
Yeah.
But she's exactly and she's not ready yet.
And that's okay.
She will be.
You know, but without those, without those two, it's, you know,
a 4-2-2 or 4-4-2 is something we just had to try.
But I think our best position formation to get the best players on the field
with what we have right now is playing a 4-3-3.
You agree, Janelli?
Yeah, I agree 100%.
The US has put out their best performances always in a 4-3 and also it's,
it's a formation where it's very versatile.
Like they're kind of just starting points and players have more freedom.
I think the 4-4-2 today was, it was good.
Just to see how players can adapt to the moment because sometimes games
are going to need, you're going to need two-nines.
You're going to need to find a way to make it work against opponents like these
because when, you know, as a center back, when you're playing against two-nines,
it's much harder than when you're playing against just one-nine.
So I think it was, it was a good nod from, from Emma Hayes.
It wasn't the best performance, I think.
They weren't able to find that chemistry in the final third.
I think it took them a bit to figure it out.
I think it took like subs coming on to really make a big difference.
But there's nothing wrong with that.
She tried it, she knows it's an option and it's not a big deal.
I'll move back to a 4-3 and it works.
I wonder what we'll see it against, you know,
a Canada or a Colombia or if this was just a one-off.
I feel like we may come up again in some way.
Okay, so it may.
So remember that, you know, we were kind of low in the outside back area
because Ysner had to leave camp early with an injury, right?
So, you know, then she's like, well, I want to get dolly on the field
with the rest of these gals if this is what I'm trying today.
So you could see she, we were building with a 3 and a bit offset dolly
and to be more of like a midfield winger.
But, you know, she's responsible to do that defensive work as an outside back.
So her attack, she's going to be fine.
But that responsibility defensively, she's not used to, you know,
staying tight with her line, you know, cover pressure, all those things.
Like that was a really tough role for her today.
But you could see Emma was like, just pretend you're not a defender,
but you're going to be a defender.
Okay?
Yeah, she's good.
There's a lot for the US to look back at this match and improve on,
especially in the 442.
But as we go into the second half, there's some changes made.
Lily Reel comes in, Claire Hutton comes in.
And then pretty quickly, we get a goal from Jaden shot comes off of a corner.
The second phase, Lindsey Heaps cuts it back to Jaden Shaw.
She tees it up and finishes it.
Beautiful, far post curler keeper probably should have had it,
but a really good opportunity and a great goal for Jaden Shaw.
And then we have, we had some more subs.
Emily Fox, Ellie sent an opportunity.
Rodman come in and, you know, Lily Reel goes out with an injury,
Trinity Rodman at the end of the match has an injury.
What do we rate the subs and how much they changed the game, though,
despite those things happening?
Do you feel like that improved and I brought the level up once those players came in?
I think Claire Hutton coming on was definitely a game changer to me in the past camps.
She's been the one that stands out the most.
I think she gives a team balance defensively and offensively.
She's kind of like that player that that literally keeps the team together.
And I think she was her 45 minutes or second half was,
it was great and to come on into, come on to a game as a sub.
It's hard sometimes to immediately get into the rhythm of the game.
And she didn't hesitate.
She immediately was an impact impact player for me.
Yeah, call who stood out to you the most from those hugs.
I think Foxy is just so valuable and so important to us.
She can play on both sides, the confidence.
I mean, you, it was a night and day when she came on, you know,
what an outside back needs to look like for us, our country and our system.
Yeah, I agree.
We also didn't mention.
Sorry, go ahead.
No, I said 100% about folks.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
And Alyssa Thompson is also another player that came in who I thought immediately just turned defenses around.
And I feel like U.S.
We just need one of those players on the pitch like that at all to stretch the line.
And yes, at all times.
But we've got a lot to build our connection with Fox on the left wing.
So good.
It's so dangerous.
It's lethal.
Yeah, so good.
I have a feeling we'll see it in the next couple of matches.
I don't know.
But stick with us, everybody.
We are going to talk about some individual performances that stuck out to us from today.
So stay with us after this quick break.
Start your day with Quaker protein instant oatmeal.
The instant oatmeal ready to help you tackle whatever your day brings.
Like wrinkling your toddler into their car seat.
That was fun.

Try Quaker protein instant oatmeal, granola, and bars.
Great taste and a good source of protein.
Quaker, bring out the good.
What's up, friends?
Welcome back to Attacking Bird.
Let's take a look at some of the performances that stood out to us today from the US and Argentina match.
For me, Claudio Dickey did really well.
Okay.
Claudio Dickey, because we're on back the episode from last week.
I also said I think Claudio Dickey would get this match.
And Fallon Toll's Choice will have the others.
I think Fallon Toll's Choice will have the most difficult, highly tested match.
And this would be the one that Claudio Dickey would get.
And I still think Argentina, we have to give them some credit.
They did well.
They had opportunities.
They were creating chances.
They were bouncing on the US's backline mistakes, especially in very poor giveaways and just mess-ups that were uncharacteristic.
They didn't fully take advantage of it.
They didn't score a goal.
But Claudio Dickey had to remain on.
And there was even a shot in the first, I think it was in the first half, a curler.
And it just narrowly missed the post.
And she don't, and then pulled her hands back last second.
I was like, the confidence.
Yeah.
Those keepers for two reasons.
Number one, they make sure.
Number two, they want to be counted for the same.
Yeah.
And she was just like, she's really in pinch.
Oh, I'm good.
Yeah.
Yep.
I think that, that could be like well of her.
She's so aware of where she's positioned in front of her goal.
For her to have that confidence.
Like when I saw the replay, I was like, no way.
Like that's insane.
But it also speaks highly of how confident she is in front of her own box.
And I like that you called her out because there was, I was hesitant at first about her performance
because in the first, like early in the first half, she tries to find heaps with the ball in the middle of the field.
And it's, it's a terrible pass.
Nothing else.
We're all very question.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Going on that next.
I like that she kept trying it that after that mistake, she didn't like give up.
Because most young players would have just been like, oh, never mind.
I'm not going to do that again.
I'm not going to try that because I don't want to mess up.
No, she was like, hey, I'm, I'm, I made a bad pass.
I'm going to try it again.
And she did it again a few minutes later.
And she found heaps.
And then she did it again.
And she found heaps.
Granted, when you're finding somebody like heaps with pressure, like she does have the job for you.
I'll figure it out.
Yeah, it's easy.
But, um, yeah, she just, I think it was good for her to, to keep trying that.
Hmm.
I do think that does show strong mentality from her.
So just like let it roll off and keep doing it again.
The only thing I would say is that our build out suffer today was pretty struggling.
And you look at your goalkeeper first because is it the organization they're giving?
The angles they're giving.
I think we were trying to play too way too low on the field.
We're literally trying to build out on our own defensive box.
And I think we were not making connections.
Tara and Jazzle had a hard time connecting.
They did not look at it at all.
They, they missed passes in front and behind each other several times.
Yeah.
And just, just general play out of the back, lack of a bit of quality.
And it was just too telegraphed and predictable for me.
And a little bit shaky at moments.
He's had to come, honestly, on inside of our own 18, you receive that ball with her back facing entirely
to the whole pitch to receive that ball from Dickie.
And for me, I don't love that ball from, I love that like when my goalkeeper trusts me to take that ball.
Yeah.
But there's got, there's got to be another way to build, build out.
And I think what we're inviting pressure from Argentina because we kept playing lower and lower.
And for me, either Dickie needs to get higher out of her own six yard box.
So then we're passing it at a higher rate up the pitch.
Or we just don't need to be making those scary passes because I think a better, a better opponent will eat that up.
Yeah.
Yeah, I agree.
Shout out to CB Wildcat though.
They said, Dickie has that eye of the tiger look.
She does.
She's one of those players that's got aura.
Like what shakes you girl?
What makes you nervous?
Doesn't seem like anything.
Which you want that in your keeper.
So I like it up up in my books in the goalkeeper position for me.
Who stood out to you guys though from some of the performances that we saw today?
You want to go first?
I mean, I just saw.
I know that again, there wasn't a lot of fluidity amongst the players at all, right?
No one let's be honest.
No one was a talent today.
No one.
However, I think she's a really good passer.
And she scored today and she has good vision, good passing, texture, weight on the ball.
I think her best position is in that 10.
So she can face up and play those final balls because like I said, she does know the distances and the texture and how far to put it.
Which lines to break whether it's in between the outside back and the center back or both center backs, whether it needs to be on the floor.
I think her passing has improved and I think she's dangerous in that area and then obviously she found a way to get it done.
I know she wasn't broke, but she found a way to get it done and she scored us a goal.
I like from the players that we picked, McCall, it was, it was kind of like what we're saying with Emma Hayes testing today of.
It's going to be ugly.
Can you figure it out?
Can you roll with the punches and still be confident?
And I think Chloe Dickie and Jaden Shaw were two of those younger, lesser-capped players that really did and just kind of shoulder through.
Even though it wasn't pretty, they still got it done.
I, yeah, I agree for sure.
I think like I mentioned to you two, both she looked really frustrated at the end of the first half.
But then to come on into the second half and flip the switch and come in with a better mentality.
And at the end of the day score, it's just that's her job.
She got the ball in the back of the net.
Really that makes.
Yeah, that's what makes an attacking player a great player, I think.
You might not have the best game for 90 minutes, but if you have one or two great moments in the ball finishes in the back of the net, then you've done your job right for sure.
Yeah, unfortunately, it's a midfielder.
You're judged for every ball you give away.
Yeah, right.
But like honestly, a number nine or a striker can give looks the ball in the dribble.
Give it away a million times. Shoot it wide five thousand times.
But at the end of the day, if they score or that's what we hired you for.
Yeah, for sure.
And it's it's frustrating as a center made a center back, but I mean, it comes with the job.
Yeah.
Oh, Denali, who stood out to you though today from everybody?
I really liked what Lily Johan is did not necessarily because of what she did on the ball.
Now, we know how good she is on the ball. She's great.
I was interested in seeing how she performed against an Argentina side that wasn't going to give her time in space on the ball.
I think she she's really smart in the build out.
She knows when to play forward. She knows when to play one touch to touch.
I love all of that about her.
But what stood out to me the most was in that moment after after the the hair pull that we saw.
There was a bit of like, you know, people lost concentration.
The US lost concentration and Argentina somehow ended up on a 2v1.
And Lily Johanis was a player that tracked back and cut off that pass inside their own 18 year books to me.
She's got to be like speed desire like grit.
I think she understands what she needs in order to play for this US national team.
I think she gets it and I just 10 out of 10 for her for that moment.
Not the whole time that moment. It was massive to me.
That mentality to track back as if I feel you're like danger.
And she's like, I'm going to go save everybody.
I love that.
No, I love that you shouted her out.
I thought like we know what she can do on the ball.
We know that she can play forward when she's quality.
She can play the perfect texture, beautiful vision, all of those things.
US, the thing with US national team.
There's not a lot of teams that challenge you where your game gets affected.
And today was one of those games.
And I think again, another younger player that we got to see rise to the occasion where, hey, you're not going to be on the ball that much.
But you're going to get stuck in the tackles.
You're going to be chirpy.
You're going to see your teammate go down.
You're going to go hit the other player.
Listen, if it's not your, if you're not your day, if your touch is not great.
There's a lot more you can do.
Trust me.
Call.
I'm not kidding.
It made me think of you.
Somebody went down.
I think it was saw or maybe just El Thompson went down and Lily was right there.
She got up.
Body check the player.
The ref was just kind of letting things roll.
There was a good like three minutes.
The ref just let all these tackles go in the first half.
Like, that's what you need.
I wouldn't.
If she went and talked about for reasons, she said, let it roll a little bit today.
I want my players to learn.
I hope she did.
She's bad ass like that too.
She said, we're getting rough out here in this country.
Howdy.
Let's let the players play today.
Yeah.
No, I'm here for it.
I'm here for it.
I think Lily's such a good show.
I hope we can see her start in the next coming up match as well against Canada.
I think that's a really big opportunity for her.
And I think the quality she showed today on the pitch and what we know she can do,
it'd be perfect for a game like that.
I want to start.
Huh?
Minutes or a start.
You want to see Lily start?
I want to see her start, McCall.
I know you disagree.
I know you disagree.
I would love that.
I would be surprised.
You're starting.
Yeah.
I would be surprised.
Oh, I don't know.
I look at Claire Hutton.
I look at Lily and Hannes.
And I'm like, if there was more times where they were both on the pitch at, there was the
ability for them to be on the pitch at the same time, they would destroy if they built chemistry.
I can see it.
They both have the ability to play long balls for a perfect texture.
Lily tackles.
We're seeing her become a monster in the defensive third and track back.
Like, we know Claire Hutton has that in her game.
They also get forward to like, to me, these are just young players that the pitch is their
oyster.
And once they get the time in the minutes together, they're going to be unstoppable.
Well, we got to start letting that cook.
Put them together.
I know.
Roll them of all.
You've got to talk to her face.
Hey, baby.
She's only 18.
Roxy lowless mama said Darian predicts.
They've been coming through it.
True lately.
I don't know.
They've been coming true.
I'm just putting it out there.
We we shall see.
But McCall, of course, you made an ideal starting 11 for the next match.
And I know mine differs a little bit.
But we're going to talk about that next as well as take a look back at Canada against
Columbia from earlier today.
So stick with us after this quick break.
Shot clocks big shots, upsets, aces, TGL playoffs are here.

Do you guys dance during the commercial breaks like I do with those?
It's laughs to me.
It was so quick, I didn't even realize it.
It's like corny enough that I still dance to it.
But I know it's like not super great.
Anyways, welcome back to attacking third.
Everybody off of the commercial break.
Let's take a look back at the matchroom earlier today with Canada against Columbia.
They ended up topping the Colombians for to one dominating win with stand-up performances from
Janine Sonez and Vanessa Giel, who both got goals along with Collins and Michelle Prince.
We know that Canada's, I feel like we can always say they've been in somewhat of a rebuild.
I think we saw a lot more positives, especially going forward.
Still lethal on set pieces, lethal from build-outs, looking more dynamic in their run-of-play,
also bringing in a younger squad.
Janelle, I know you watched this game more closely.
Can you give us a little breakdown of what you got from this match?
Well, the first half was interesting.
It was more of like a 50-50 match, I think.
Canada did get on the scoreboard with Vanessa Giel,
from the header from perfect ball-in from Janine Sonez.
But it took them some time to find a way to dominate the match.
You know, like you said, Canada's in this rebuilding phase.
And you can kind of see it because they lack order for moments.
They lack chemistry for moments, but as the game went on, they were able to build and find chemistry.
The second half was a completely different game.
They absolutely dominated.
And then the subs that came on, where they were game changers,
the shell prints came on and changed the game.
A wujo came on and absolutely changed the game too.
This is going to be a very different match for the United States
because it's Canada's a completely different opponent that would Argentina.
Canada is a team that can play very direct.
And they're so lethal on set pieces.
They have a base on the wings, pace up top.
And then they have two center backs in Vanessa Giel and Rose
that are really, really good on defending 1v1.
So I think it's going to be a different challenge for the US.
Canada is a team.
Yeah, but I love watching the game.
I was like, I can't tell if I'm impressed with Canada
or I'm underwhelmed by Colombia.
It was one of those.
You know, like I kind of expected more from Colombia.
You know, especially since they're really growing as a nation.
I mean, I think that's what they did when they were playing at Canada.
I think that was really exciting.
I think they were really good at that.
You know, really good Olympics.
And I started to get attention and funding and building a league in their country
and all these things.
And these players are starting to have more opportunities
so they're even coming to the end of a cell, which is freaking awesome.
I just thought they put on a better foot against Canada.
But Canada is clean up their act.
They've they've they've they know that they've had a rough couple years,
down for a little bit, then after that drone scandal
that they basically got a penalty for
and they just have riling back now
and they're like, well, that's not gonna happen to us again.
We deserve to be in there
and they're really putting their best foot forward
and focusing more on the proof that they can score goals.
My question is when it comes to Canada is the goal scoring
and I only got to watch bits and pieces
of the match from earlier today
but I was underwhelmed with Columbia's performance.
I think a better team could have showed up
and been much more of a test to Canada.
But we're here for growth.
There's still a couple more games
and the US gets to play Canada next.
Now, let's rewind it back
because the last time these two played
was when she believes Cup, it was 2-2
and the US won on penalties.
And I believe this is where the pitch was like
soaking wet, flooded.
Am I recalling that right?
This is where like the ball wouldn't move.
It was wild.
Yeah.
It was crazy, the rain game.
I actually wish we had pictures of it
because it was probably the most ridiculous game I've ever found.
It was like, it's one of those where I'm like,
should they be playing like, is this even the sport anymore?
And it was so, we were so hyped to see it
because Canada was doing so well.
Some of their goals were brilliant in the tournament.
The US was rebuilding in a way.
Jane Shaw was having the tournament
over her very young career at the time
and then we got just a sloppy wet game.
But the US had...
You know, when you pass the ball and it just stops
right there, it doesn't go anywhere.
Well, then like you can come on athletic
and you're like, oh, it's like,
you can get a bit of a gale anymore.
You're like trying to play on a pond.
Let's hope that doesn't happen again.
Yeah, everybody...
If it didn't know that I was supposed to sing...
Knock on wood, everybody.
Knock on your cowboy hats.
Do something.
I don't know.
Everybody remember this.
When you talk about flipping the calendar,
do you think that we should play the same
the way that Europe does?
It gets cold and rainy and disgusting here
and it is very, very difficult to play games
in December, January, February and even into March
and most of the regions of the country.
This is cold.
Very, very true.
Very, very true.
We're gonna talk about that in another segment.
Absolutely.
I'm a call.
We hinted about it earlier.
I think Lili O'Hana should be starting the next match.
You differ, though.
I know you predicted and gave us your ideal starting 11
for the match against Canada.
Mm-hmm.
So ideal.
And obviously I made this a little bit before.
We had a little incident with Trinity Rodman
blessings and prayers to her and also with real.
I personally think they're gonna be okay.
I think they're gonna be okay by Wednesday.
So I'm gonna stick with this lineup.
This is who I think is, obviously,
some of the most sophisticated players,
experienced players,
but it's also a very healthy balance of creativeness,
selflessness to hold down that protection
in front of the back line.
You know, Sana and Germa, for me,
is just the absolute world class best pairing.
Foxy, I mentioned her earlier.
It's just top bins all the time,
no matter which side she plays on.
Real has become such a wonderful pro for herself.
And quite frankly, a very important piece
for our nation moving forward for the next year and a half, I think.
And yeah, I had to go with the 433.
If we wanna get our best players on the pitch at once,
you gotta go 433.
Why?
That just suits the personnel,
or is it just the comfortability of a 433?
Yeah, because 442 is,
you're kinda playing two flat, sixes in the midfield.
And then it's like, well, where does Rose go then?
And I think just Rose of Elle needs to be on the pitch.
She's not a winger.
We shouldn't put her out defending one,
be one in the flank areas.
So you just think about the actual personnel that you have,
and this is fitting for all their strengths.
Hmm.
I like it.
I just wanna see Lily.
I know it.
I know.
I agree with 10 of these 11.
I think, I don't know if I'd have an in coffee
starting together in the midfield, but the rest.
How come you think that she's similar?
I think they're, yeah, they're too similar.
I just kinda think in that, but.
Yeah, I think they're both, like if you,
I would start them together against a team
that was at the same level as a US.
Because, and again, I love about Claire, though,
what she offers different from Sam is her left foot.
Claire has a dynamite left foot.
I would say I'm very, very excited.
Yeah, I would start Claire and over over coffee.
To me, Claire, she, she's been by far one of the best players
this past year for club and country.
She's just solid all around.
I think I already mentioned it earlier in the show.
And I think her and coffee are a little bit too similar.
But if you take coffee out, you give the ability
for somebody like, Lily,
your hand is to step in there and play more of like
that eight or 10 roll.
But everyone else, I think you're spot on.
Okay, Jerry, I'm gonna activate you.
So say, Lily and Trend can't go.
What's she doing with it?
What's she doing with my lineup?
Ooh, the roster that Emma Hayes has now,
especially with Avery Patterson not being there.
Yeah.
A O.K. is another player.
I gave a shout out that I thought deserved to be called in
after the last camp.
You have to put Giselle Thompson into the right.
You put Foxy in at the left like she was today.
I love the front line.
I think that that's it.
If Rodman's still ginger dealing with an injury.
What do you do?
I want to say Emma Sears,
because I don't think we got to see the best of her today
just because the team couldn't really struggle to build out.
And it wasn't a fault of hers.
It was just she wasn't getting the quality of service
she needs to be effective for her strengths.
And we're going against a team like a Canada.
Emma Sears is built.
She's the same high as me.
She's strong.
She's quick to get in behind.
She's not afraid to go 1v1.
To me, that is the best player to come in
for Trinity Rodman.
What about like a 4-5 wanted to get Sean there?
Oh my god, whoa.
Who do you take out then?
You would still put her in the scene of Rodman can't go.
Yeah.
It just all for something different.
Sean's not a run in behind.
And we said, I also like I agree to do the US does the best
when there's players that can run in behind.
Yes, we need to stretch.
We need to stretch the line.
And then there's space for a hunt.
It's been our style of play for 20 years.
Like, yeah, we have dominated in pace
and power and physicality.
And we go over the top all the time.
That's just who we are.
Well, when we agree and it works.
Yeah, it's hey, the name broke.
Don't fix it.
But you know, you've generally you've played against Canada,
right?
Yeah, numerous times.
When you're playing against a team like Canada
who are physical, they're not afraid to make the game ugly.
They don't need to have the ball.
They'll kill you on set pieces if they can.
Very physical.
How can they hurt the US?
Like what lessons and what can we expect maybe from Canada
going against this US team that could be dealing
with some knocks and injuries?
Janelle, I kind of want to hear from you
just your experience playing Canada.
I think Canada is one of their biggest strengths
is set pieces.
I think they are really good.
Whether it be corner kicks or from free kicks in in and around
the 18 yard box, they're so dangerous because not just
because of the quality of the service that they can provide
but the players that they have to find.
Yeah, we're such fans of a message.
She's whenever she has time and space, if she's going to score.
Yeah, she's like a wedding rn attorney.
Like she's a magnet for service.
She knows how to find the ball.
She's always searching for it.
And she's their target at the end of the day.
So I think that's one of the ways that Canada can be really
dangerous against the US.
Possibly on transition, but McCall, you call that out
with the center back pairing in Germa.
I think they're great.
I think they're amazing.
So Canada is a team that's used to being able to transition
and find that space in behind.
But when you have Germa and Sony covering that space,
it's going to be hard because they're both
center backs that are, they complement each other.
They're both quick.
They're great at 1v1s.
They know how to read the game.
They know when to step, when not to step.
So I think it's going to be a challenge for Canada there.
I don't think Canada is that threatening in their front line
against that.
You don't think so?
Look at how, look at how much young talent they have, though.
I mean, McCall, did you play with Evelyn Vions?
There's a difference between exciting players and effective
players.
Ooh, that's a bar.
Valic, that's a bar.
It's true.
So you don't think Canada's building up in their chemistry.
To me, it's still getting better.
I just don't think they're there yet.
I was like, ask Evelyn, yeah.
They don't have that killer goal score
that all they need is one opportunity.
Like, they need a lot of opportunities.
Like, they just don't have that refinement in that, you know.
It's valid.
Yeah, the game didn't give any sign
that they are getting more quality in the final third.
Four to one against Columbia, to me, was shocking to see.
It was, but that's why I'm saying Columbia
not disappointed me, but I was like, oh,
I expected better from you.
So the opponents may have given them a few freebies.
I agree.
Yeah, Columbia definitely underperformed.
But Canada was able to take advantage of those moments.
And they're not going to have the same opportunities
than that they did against Columbia when they play against the US.
It's going to be a completely different game for Canada.
Well, I'm excited to see McCall.
We'd love you're starting 11.
But before we go, I want to get score predictions
because we'll obviously be back once that game wraps.
We'll be here on attacking third on YouTube.
Make sure you guys tune in.
But Janelle, you go first.
What's the score prediction US versus Canada?
I have the US winning for sure.
The score line, I'm sure.
I'm going to go with 2-0 US.
I think they're going to dominate.
I think they might suffer for moments.
But I feel like the US is just, they're on this moment.
So they're just building and they're getting better.
They're finding ways to get better each game.
And it's going to be a good match.
McCall?
2-0.
So 2-0.
Oh, I can't wait to hear yours, Daryl.
And because you're going to be right.
I'm going 3-1 US.
I think we're going to get scored on a set piece.
Oh, McCall, I have the same one.
Yeah, I think we need to clean up that area.
I almost went with 3-1, but I'm hoping that they're better
on set pieces.
I'm hoping that the US is better
on defending set pieces.
But there were moments against Argentina today
that I was like, oh, a better team
would have taken advantage.
It could have been able to take advantage of that.
Yes.
So yeah, McCall, I'm actually with you.
I said 3-1.
But we all have US winning.
OK.
We all have the US winning by 2.
Yeah, we all have the US winning by 2.
So many people in the chat also agree with us.
Have US winning.
But Canada may be sneaking in a goal.
Or 2, we shall see.
But make sure you guys tune in after that match
on Wednesday, US ones national team versus Canada,
because your girls will be on YouTube right here,
