A convincing win over the Winnipeg Jets has reinstilled confidence in the Bruins playoff
hopes and as an added bonus, new Bruin Lucas Rikle made an immediate impact in his Boston
debut.

On this episode of Locked On Boston Bruins for Friday March 20th, we are discussing the
stats, the storylines and the signals from last night's 6-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets.
We will also take a look ahead at tomorrow's massive game against the Detroit Red Wings.
Now in terms of storylines last night, there were so many Bruins stepping up to help
this team win its 14th in the past 15 at TD Garden.
And one of those was new Bruin Lucas Rikle.
The 23 year old forward who is acquired from the Vancouver Connucks at the Traded Line
for a 6th round pick was recalled from Providence on Wednesday and recorded two points.
One goal, one assist and was vibing off the Bruins crowd.
He said the crowd is always amazing, even when he played here against the Bruins, it feels
even better when you play for the team.
And Rikle scored the eventual game winner, it was the Bruins's second goal of the night.
And he just followed the play into the offensive zone, accelerated towards the net as Conor
Hellibuk who looked near perfect a few weeks ago, 14 USA in the Olympic gold medal final.
He mishandled the puck and Rikle beat two jets to the crease and whacked it in at 1816
of the first period for the 2-0 boost.
It was Rikle's first goal as a Bruin and his third in the NHL this season.
He described it as just a bouncing puck, happens to every goalie and he was glad he was the
first guy on the scene to bat it in.
It was because of his speed that he was able to penetrate the zone and get to that loose
puck, bang it into the back of the net.
That whole line looked reinvigorated a little bit.
He skated on the third line with Elias Lindholm and Morgan Yiki, finished the night with
14 minutes and 45 seconds of ice time.
They had a few good rushes because of Rikle's speed and skill.
That's some good breakouts because of it, head coach Marco Sturm said offensively he's
a driver and that was the goal, bringing this guy in today to drive Elias and Yikes.
He can push them a little bit more forward.
It appears as though the plan is to keep Rikle up for the time being on that line with
those two guys to really help spread out the offense.
That was one of the bigger stories of last night's game for the Boston Bruins, was just
how spread out things were offensively.
You had five forwards who had two points of peace and then you had another couple who
chipped in offensively as well, Casey Middlestat, two assists, Pavel Zaka, a goal and an assist.
Victor Arvitson, a goal and an assist.
That line continues to buzz and as Arvitson said after, we have fun together.
We talk about stuff and joke about stuff on the bench too and that's the most important
thing.
That creates chemistry.
That line is really connected.
They know where each other is going to be, what the other guy likes to do.
It's a really good mix of speed, playmaking skills and people going to the net too, being
around there and wanting to score.
Again, each of those guys ended up with two points of peace and it's lending credence
to the idea of resigning Victor Arvitson this off season.
You have Pavel Zaka and Casey Middlestat both entering the final years of their contracts
and the way that Victor Arvitson has played with those two guys this season, there's every
reason to consider bringing him back so that this line can continue to roll.
And Pavel Zaka has been unreal as of late as well.
He's got his 23rd goal of the season.
He scored last night, again going down the list of two point performers, Zaka with a goal
and an assist.
Arvitson goal and an assist, Raikl, a goal and an assist.
David Poschenak, a goal and an assist with Casey Middlestat getting two assists in
this one as well, both of which were primary in nature on goals scored by his linemates,
Arvitson and Zaka.
Missing the Olympics, Pavel Zaka said was not the great, not great for him mentally, but
he was thinking the whole break he said, how can I come back and be a difference maker?
And that he has been, he's been focusing on the little things, winning puck battles,
being good in the face off dot.
And they are just trying to push to do a good job out there.
And that line again, just incredible lately.
And Pavel Zaka is a main reason why it didn't stop there though.
You had a goals from Fraser Minton in this one and from an unlikely source to cap things
off.
Jonathan Aspero, who went plus four on the night alongside Charlie McAvoy and who scored
the sixth goal of the night to just really put this one away.
Jonathan Taves had gotten the jets on the board to ruin Swamon's shut out bid.
But then Minton scored off a pass from David Poschenak for his 16th goal of the year.
And then Jonathan Aspero brought it to 6th one with the wrist shot with Geeky and
Rikle logging the assists.
Aspero, obviously not an offensive force out there, but he said it's always fun to score
goals.
He was super excited about that.
And they're just trying to go game by game, trying not to think about things too much.
Just do what they can as a group and what they can control.
Not a win every game and have some fun doing it as well.
And that is translating right now.
I mean, it's easy to have fun and look like you're having a good time out there when you're
winning by a score of six to one.
And when everybody is contributing and chipping in, this was a game.
The Bruins simply had to win because you can't afford to drop points at home to a team
that is well outside the playoff picture as are the Winnipeg Jets.
You absolutely had to come out.
It didn't have to be this convincing, but still to be able to get some real confidence
here before heading out on the road for a massive game against the Detroit Red Wings
tomorrow night, then they'll come home to take on a Toronto Maple Leafs team that's
also out of the playoff picture, but looking to remain competitive and fight for jobs
next year, playing for contracts, before going to Buffalo, it's going to be the same situation.
You're going to have to take care of business at home against Toronto and then go to Buffalo
and do the best you can.
Hopefully, this game last night can carry over to tomorrow night's game in Detroit.
The Bruins are off today.
They're not practicing.
They're not having any media availability.
They're traveling to Detroit, where they will get their mindset on beating the Red Wings
and trying to move up in the Atlantic Division playoff picture.
But a huge, immediate impact by Lucas Reiko.
I'd really liked his game.
He had some opportunities early on the power play as well.
The Bruins power play went over one.
They only had the one opportunity, but they had some really good looks on that one opportunity.
The Jets loan goal came on the power play.
The penalty kill went one for four and overall just about as good of a game as you could
play on home ice against a team that definitely was vulnerable heading into this one.
The main concern was Conor hella book and his ability to steal games, but the Bruins
made him look average at best, actually well below average, with his save percentage
of 778 on the night.
He allowed six even strength goals on 27 shots last night and really could have used
that kind of performance a few weeks ago in Milan against team Canada.
We're going to take a look at some more of the stats you need to know from last night's
game as well as the impact on the playoff picture here as locked on Boston Bruins.

So the Boston Bruins with a very convincing win over the Winnipeg jets and the underlying
numbers suggest it wasn't as close or it should have been a lot closer than it was I should
say at five on five Winnipeg jets actually had more shot attempts than the Boston Bruins.
Bruins did have more shots at five on five twenty five to twenty but the scoring chances
were in favor of the jets twenty eight twenty two the high danger chances were twelve eleven
in favor of the jets and the expected goals were 2.83 compared to 2.44 that was at five
on five and you know when we talk about goals saved above expected you can watch the highlights
from last night's game and see Jeremy Swaman putting that on full display there was a shot
I believe it was from gave Valardi where I was convinced it was going in but he extended
his right pad and his blocker and made a pretty impossible looking safe in all situations
last night the Winnipeg jets actually had more pox towards the net and more scoring chances
they had 54% of the shot attempts 58% of the scoring chances 59% of the high danger
chances and expected goals in this one were actually 4.05 for the jets versus 2.8 for the
Bruins we've talked a lot lately about the disparity the Bruins are experiencing between
expected goals and actual goals five on five and in all situations last night's game kind
of typified that and even tilted the balance even further in terms of what's been expected
of this team and what has actually happened if you look at all strengths after last night's
game and for the season as a whole the Bruins have a goal for differential of where do they
rank here of they rank 11th but they goal for differential of 51.71% their expected goal differential
though is 30th in the NHL and they rank expected goals for they have an expected goals for a 46.26
in all situations based on the expected goals they should be at around 216 actual goals low
they've scored 227 so that is 11 more than expected when it comes to expected goals against about
251 and they're actually at 212 that is a massive massive gap in terms of expected goals
allowed and actual goals allowed like 33 to be precise plus 11 goals scored more than expected so
that's like a 42 goal gap between what's expected and what is actually happening for this team
now is that caused for concern yes because generally if you are allowing more shots
expected goals scoring chances high danger chances then the opposition it's going to be hard for you
to win night in and night out but the Bruins have been one of the better teams in the NHL since
the Christmas break and a large part of that is due to the goal tending if you go back to the
December 31st game against the Edmonton Oilers that they won and you look at their safe percentage
over those 29 games they rank third in all situations with a team safe percentage
of 90.6 their shooting percentage is also sixth at 13.1 and their PDO is second or sorry tied for
second with the Utah minimum at 103.7 usually it's supposed to level off around an even 100 and if
you look that's where it kind of splits pretty naturally right now 15 16 17 in the NHL
100.2 99.8 that's really where the the averages so the Bruins are
saving many more goals than expected they're getting a great safe percentage from Jeremy Swamin
Johannes Corbusallo they're also getting a high shooting percentage despite the fact the
power play has been pretty bad and that's something that needs to step up if they're going to have
a chance of not just making the playoffs but making some noise when they get to the post season.
Now after last night's win Boston's playoff chances sit at 67.8% and that puts them eighth best
odds of making the playoffs in the Eastern Conference you've Carolina Buffalo Tampa Bay pretty much
all locks at 99% you have the Columbus Blue Jackets who are now at 80.2% even though
oh actually they have moved into third place in the Atlantic Division finally they've been
pushing pushing pushing for so long last night they bumped the New York Islanders out of
third place in the Metropolitan Division and that's something I've been saying for a while you
need to keep an eye on that race because Blue Jack is not really just chasing the Bruins or the
Red Wings but also now they're only a point back at the Pittsburgh Penguins and they could bump
them back down as well so Columbus at 80.2% Montreal at 75.8 Detroit at 73.7 the Bruins at 67.8
and the Islanders at 61.1 now of course you always have to compare to the Athletics model which
is generally a lot tougher on the Bruins than MoneyPuck right now the Athletics still has the
Bruins at 41% behind the Senators the Islanders so that would put them in like 10th best odds of
making the playoffs and that's because they have a very tough schedule coming up
game tomorrow in Detroit they have road games in Buffalo two in Columbus which are going to be
very tough the way the Blue Jackets are playing at the moment and tomorrow night's game in Detroit
is going to be a massive swing game in terms of playoffs odds potential right now the Bruins are
in the first wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference with 84 points which is tied with the Pittsburgh
Penguins and the Montreal Canadians as well as the Detroit Red Wings if you look at point
percentage though the Bruins are basically in a tie for 7th 8th with the Red Wings at 609 the
Blue Jackets are at 610 the Canadians at 618 tie with the penguins and then even though Boston
is only four points back of the lightning for second in the Atlantic Division the lightning
have two games in hand so that kind of skews the point percentage the Sabers right now tied
with the Carolina Hurricanes for most points in the Eastern Conference although Carolina has the
bit of an edge because they have one fewer game played so right now the Bruins are trying to
hold off the Islanders hold off the Senators as well as stay ahead of the Detroit Red Wings
that's pretty much all they have to worry about the Flyers still kind of kicking around at 78 points
6 back and the Capitals Devils Panthers Maple Leafs all pretty much out of the race at this point
tomorrow night's game though like I said it's going to be massive in terms of the Bruins
playoff odds and securing a spot we'll take a look at the game against the Red Wings and what is
on the line here as Lockdown Boston Bruins continues there is nothing quite like being inside

business wireless checking out customers under mobile POS systems took too long basically a steering
contest where everyone loses it's crazy what people say during an awkward silence now transactions
are done before the silence takes hold that means I can focus on the task at hand and make an extra
sale at two sometimes I do miss the bonding time sometimes AT&T business wireless connecting changes
everything Boston Bruins Detroit Redwings saturday night at Little Caesars Arena and it's an 8 p.m.
start tomorrow night if case you weren't aware and tonight though there's a couple games to keep an eye on
Hurricanes Maple Leafs Devils Capitals Panthers Flames all Eastern Conference teams not a lot to
worry about their playoff picture wise tomorrow afternoon jets will take on the penguins so that
could be a couple big points for Pittsburgh you will have the Blue Jackets hosting the Kraken
as they continue to look to rise to even second in the Metropolitan Division
and you'll also have the Islanders taken on the Canadians which is a huge game because
the Bruins are right in the middle of both of those squads the senators will also be hosting
the Maple Leafs tomorrow night in what should be a win for them on home ice.
Of course the game we're looking at is Bruins versus Redwings it is the fourth and final
meeting between these two teams in the regular season the Bruins have won two of them so far the
latest being a three nothing shut out win over Detroit back on January 13th Jeremy Swaman made
24 saves in that one and the goal scorers for the Boston Bruins were Palazacca Fraser Minton
and Mark Castellick so again another game where they got contributions up and down the lineup and
that's something that has to continue if they're going to lock down that playoff spot.
The Redwings are 44 and 2 over their past 10 games they have one two in a row over Calgary and
Montreal the Bruins are five two and three so points out of their eight of their last 10 while
Detroit has picked up points in six of their last 10. The Redwings are led in scoring by Alex
Debrinkett who's got 72 points in 69 games Lucas Raymond's got 67 points in 67 games
third leading score Dylan Larkin currently out of the lineup due to injury and that is one of
the big reasons why this team is sliding as of late most side are on the blue line you got to watch
they also have Justin Falk of course who was added at the trade-ed line where it was believed he
might be coming to the Bruins ends up in Detroit also a former Bruin James Van Reamsdike
with 15 goals 28 points for this team a guy that you always have to keep an eye on even at
this stage of his career. Debrinkett is red hot he's got nine points in his past five games including
eight assists Patrick Kane leading the way with three goals in the past five for the Redwings
David Posternock outpacing Pavel Zaka lately at eight points four goals for assists but
his check teammate is right there in terms of making an impact lately for the Bruins. Bruins power
played down to eight at 23.7 penalty kill slipped a bit last night allowing a power play goal by
Jonathan Taves they're at 24th the Redwings power play is 14th and they're penalty
kill is 20th they're averaging only 2.91 goals per game the Redwings whereas the Bruins are
averaging 3.29 the Redwings are allowing only 2.91 goals per game though which ranks them 10th
John Gibson has stepped up for this team in net this season 907 save percentage with the record
of 26 15 and 3. I would hope that Jeremy Swamon's back in net for the Bruins and they save
Corbisalo for the game against the Maple Leafs before going back to Swamon for the road game
against the Sabers that's how I would deploy things I know it's been a few days since Corbisalo
played but you have to ride Jeremy Swamon especially when he is playing so well I didn't even
touch on his performance last night he made 24 saves and sorry 23 saves on 24 shots for a 958
save percentage and was also close to picking up a shadow he's played very well quality starts
in the month of March is only blemish being that lost to San Jose but otherwise 958 903 929 938 957 971 those are
his single game save percentages in the month of March the San Jose game notwithstanding at 857
now what's on the line for the Bruins it's a huge game for both teams and if the Bruins are able
to pick up two points they will drastically increase their odds of making the playoffs according to
money puck if they win in regulation they will be at 78.5% raising their odds by 10.7% if they win in
overtime thereby allowing Detroit to pick up a single point they would still go up to 76.1%
if they lose in regulation they'll be down to 56.3% and if they lose in overtime they'll drop
just slightly to 67.2% so regulation results here there's a potential swing of 22.2% on the line
the Bruins could go down to 56.3 with a regulation loss or up to 78.5 with a regulation win
redwings not a dissimilar situation if they be bossed in regulation they'll go back up to 82.4%
if they lose to the Bruins in regulation down to 62.4% that is a 20% swing for them also so huge
stakes tomorrow night in Detroit the Bruins taken on the redwings they have not been great on the
road this season but they did pick up points in each of their previous three that road trip just
last weekend and they have to keep that going hopefully they can build on the confidence they gained
from last night's win over the Winnipeg Jets in which they got offense from all three scoring lines
and Jeremy Swaman continuing to stand tall as the last line of defense thank you so much for
