We've got our Starbucks this morning guys, ready to go, we've got Jeff Reader as a guest
on the show.
Finally, we've been waiting, we were making our bets everybody whether he'll be in the
car or not.
Feel free to leave your comments if you also think he'll be in the car.
Tell you what, I mean just kind of going off of the lines off season so far, you know
you had UD, I mean you had the free agent signings, you had the draft, but one thing stands
for certain, if you don't fix the trenches, you know, you just decorate in a problem.
And the lines didn't redecorate, you know, they rebuilt.
One pride, it's the Lion Squad, everything Detroit Lions every week, breaking down all
the big hits and game-changing plays from the Motor City, play only the Lockdown Podcast
Network can, from the roar of the Lions to the next great chapter, the Lion Squad Show
starts now.
Make sure does say hello in the comments if you're watching live on the number one sports
podcast platform, the Lockdown Podcast Network.
My name is Jake Reema, we've got Natalie Kerwin, Detroit Piston, sideline reporter, Detroit
Lions extraordinaire, content queen, social media extraordinaire, Bradford Banta, 20 year NFL
veteran, player, coach, log snapper, we're going to banter with Banta, I just think maybe
just in case somebody is tuning in for the first time, we want to know, we want to let
them know what they're in store for, but I'm fired up, we've got Lions news to cover,
Jeff Reeger is going to join the show just as Natalie said, and you know what, let's
kick it off, starting by talking a little bit, Detroit Pistons, Natalie Kerwin, big win
last night, and the series is extended, you got to feel good about that.
Oh, it was the Cade versus Apollo show, it was everything you could ask for, but Cade
put this team on his back last night, I tell you what, they needed to take it to game
six.
They, if they would have lost last night, you guys, I don't know if I would have made
it on the podcast today.
I could have, I would have been two down in the dumps, wouldn't have been able to concentrate,
but no, I mean, listen, they, they knew they had to take care of business.
I mean, they said they're a model going into the game last night, it was backs against
the wall.
So they tried doing just that.
It's not going to be easy, though, they play in Orlando tomorrow night, game six, and
then if they do win that, they get game seven back at LCA on Sunday, I believe.
Two best words from sports, game seven, I know, nothing like it, all of the, I mean,
you look at, gosh, I don't think any team has clinched yet in the playoffs, right?
Not so far.
Everyone's been trying to, I'm trying to think who, yeah, I don't think anybody's closer
to that out.
So they've been entertaining, but yeah, how'd you feel, Jake?
How was the heart rate last night watching?
It was good.
Um, I was, it was kind of a whirlwind of emotion, because as the pistons closed it out, the
Detroit Tigers surrendered a nice walkoff homer that was served up middle, middle, middle,
just a nice meatball from Kenley Janssen to run bomb to lose.
So I had the little like devil angel, oh, you're happy.
The pistons won.
Oh, you're upset.
The blue another one.
That's the third blown save for Kenley Janssen.
So although I will say the immediate instant reaction post game show after a dramatic win
or loss always gets people talking.
So, you know, I'm a, I'm a slave to the content, whatever makes the best live post game
show.
So if it had to be a walkoff homer for the opposition, hey, people are talking just
like we got people talking in the comments right now.
So we're all over the place for adford, Banta.
Did you have the bots come in?
That's what I want to know.
Did you have the bots come in because exactly yes, that's what I want to know.
Jake, but did the bots come in on the comments that not on the Tigers?
Well, we did have some bots infiltrating our lockdown pistons stream, not this past
episode.
And it might have just been Orlando Magic trolls and they had planted a troll about at
that time, which they still somewhat do having the three to lead in the series going back
to Orlando.
Yeah, you know, my, my time spent arguing with bots is probably, there's probably better
ways to allocate my time.
Yeah, I think so too.
I agree.
But the good thing about it is you have the microphone last.
Yeah, that's what always matters.
And I got the block button on here somewhere, just, you know, like I'm around the horn where
they can mute people, you know, I can, they're, YouTube lets you ban them from the studio.
You can put them in time out, all kinds of powerful features here on the old stream yard
to YouTube platform that the number one sports podcast platform, lock down podcast network
utilizes at the highest level and fullest capacity, but we got Detroit Lions news to discuss.
In fact, this went final after we were off the air on Tuesday.
So we've had plenty of time to digest unpack everything else when you see the news headlines
like this, but, and we'll ask Rieger about this, of course, as well, but Jack Campbell's
fifth year contract declined and Jameer Gibbs, his fifth year exercise.
So Bradford, the CEO of the NFL is a business, the NFL is a business that that phrase, this
is a business decision.
White, the fact that you just stated, my friend, so you think about it.
So Jameer Gibbs, one of the elite backs in the NFL, you know, and, you know, you pick
up his fifth year option.
Okay.
Great.
So what does that do?
That locks him into a $14.29 million contract as a running back.
Is that expensive for a back, yes, but it's manageable for a true offensive weapon.
I look for petsing to use Jameer Gibbs, not only in the backfield, but also I look for
him to use him, you know, in the slot, just like we were talking about during the season.
You know, it, but, you know, it locked in control of the Jameer Gibbs situation right now,
while you can have some long-term talks that will continue to be had during the season
and then hopefully get him extended, you know, for the, for the future.
Uh, because I mean, you're looking at a player with over 5,000 scrimmage yards, 49 touchdowns
and 49 games, that's, that's good production.
So, but, you know, and, but from the lion standpoint, because the running back is always tricky.
And why?
Because the injury risk at that position is very real.
So, that's why you brought in Isaiah Pacheco after Montgomery got traded, traded to the
Texans and you just wanted to have a firm back up, you know, just in case, you know, something
happens to Gibbs, but you can't let it get emotional.
You got to keep it mathematical in whenever you're talking these contracts and extending
these players.
So, smart move by the lions.
And did we want to touch on Campbell as well?
Let's, let's do one of these numbers because we have an audience bet that we need to pay
off of whether or not Jeff Rieger is joining us from his vehicle and based on the grade
out screen, I can kind of tell, but we want to keep the people waiting through the ad
read to determine if Natalie Kerwin was correct with her assumption that Jeff Rieger
will be joining us from his vehicle somewhere.
So, if you know that you can turn in your clown mask, both of you.
Yeah, I was just, I'm, I'm over to on bet, so we'll just keep it rolling.
Jeff Rieger joins the live lockdown line squad show next.
But first today's episode is brought to you by our good friends over at Indeed, if you

All right, back here on the live locked on lion squad show.
The moment we've all been waiting for Jeffrey, your 97 one, the ticket joining the show.
Oh, yeah, is it correct?
It looks like a sunny sky.
You just got a nice backdrop there.
They get the turn to clown mask back in.
All right, yes, Riga, that has just been such a hotly contested topic of whether or
not your wife would kick you out and you'd be joining from the vehicle.
Hey, first of all, I find this so offensive.
All right, let me tell you why.
Let me tell you why you call this my vehicle.
I call this my office.
It's a corner office with a great view.
Like, look at this.
Where else do you get that view?
We got the recycling bins right there.
Oh, my gosh, the acoustics in this office are fantastic.
Yeah, I mean, you're doing good, man, you sound great.
You sound great, almost as good as you sounded yesterday.
I have to give you a hard time about this because I saw a Twitter video of you
autographing some poor fans piston sign at the game last night.
All right, listen to me.
This was not my intent.
You know me, dude, I'm a hermit.
When I go out, I do not like to draw attention to myself.
I'm just an offer tonight inevitably do.
No, we're at the pistons game yesterday before game five.
People are all jacked and pumped and this woman comes up to where we're broadcasting
from and she's like, oh, my God, can I have your autograph?
And I'm like, I don't really give autographs other than on checks back in the day.
Yeah, most of them bounce.
They'll have you know.
So, so anyway, you know, I'm probably on a wall in East Lansing, somewhere my check bouncing
for booze.
But anyway, she's like, I really want your autograph.
So of course, I was totally humbled and I like sure.
So Jeremy Otto, who works with us, he takes a video of the whole thing.
And exactly I knew what was going to happen midway through me signing the autograph.
He's like, well, who are you?
I'm like, why are you asking for a autograph if you have the idea who I am.
And she's like, why I just want your autograph?
You must be somebody you're broadcasting.
So I did sign the autograph and you could probably look for it on eBay.
I'm sure it's going for a good cost.
Oh my gosh.
I want to sign it.
I would have given anything.
I would have given anything to be there in that moment.
It was just hilarious.
The big worry, though, is if you're signing something and then they get you to sign a
legal document without you realizing, like, right, could you imagine you sign your life
away?
And you just think you're giving me an autograph.
That's a good scheme to, especially in that setting, little scissors arena and, you know,
you could easily distract somebody to sign something that they probably shouldn't.
But, you know, Rieger, we got, we got Lions conversations.
We got plenty to get into there.
Nat and you both obviously with some Detroit Pistons expertise.
Do you think, based on what you saw last night, do you think they're getting it done?
Getting what done?
Winning the series?
Yeah.
Natalie, you go first.
Oh God.
Listen, they put themselves in a bit of a hole and they know that, right?
Like, I mean, they're down three, two, and it's going to take a lot to get a game seven
back in Detroit.
I think they're going to need to have another Cade Cunningham, like performance, like we saw
last night.
A Sartonson, his ability on the defensive end.
He was amazing.
I mean, you're going to need every single guy to contribute.
You can't have, you can't take a night off like Orlando's obviously proven that they've
come ready.
I mean, they've been in, they've been in the intermediate.
They didn't have the full bill of health all season and we didn't see this kind of team
all year long.
But man, they've, they've played really well and I don't, I don't know why the Pistons
have decided at least the first few games to back down from the way they have played all
season long, what got them to 60 wins.
But I don't know.
You need every single guy to contribute and Jalen der and man, that's a whole other
story line.
That looks nice.
I'm like, I don't, it's like, where, where is he been, right?
like he stepped up big when came as hurt in the regular season, but playoffs come and just
see ya. I don't know. So, I don't know.
Do we believe the guy is the thing? He is only 22 years old. Do we, do we, I mean,
when do Carter dating his ex? I don't know. That could screw with a young man.
Could it, though, for every, like, you'd think maybe the first game, but you think that's
a ringer's?
How are we giving it?
Well, Jamal Cain dunks on them and then injuries. Postes on social media.
I know. What has happened? What happened in that relationship? That is the true story.
We need to find out what happened in that relationship with the ladies and gentlemen there.
So I agree with you. I think I think Cade's going to have to be as special if not more
special. I do wonder this is going to sound negative. If Franz Wagner played yesterday,
this Cade go off for 45, probably not considering he's done a tremendous job shutting Cade down.
Cade only had five turnovers. That was good to see, but here's my worry. Orlando just
has too many pieces. I feel Tobias scored 21 yesterday and obviously Cade scored 45.
Are you going to get that many points between those two guys moving forward in two more
games? Meanwhile, Orlando has a Jalen Suggs that can kill you. They have a Desmond Bane
that can kill you. Paulo Bunkero was outstanding. So I probably still have to pick Orlando.
And here's the thing that kills me. And again, it's me being negative. But we all thought maybe
they were just this try hard team that was wiping the floor with not try hard teams in the
regular season. And now the right, the playoffs start. And Natalie, to your point, like, where's
the effort and intensity been for the first four games? Game four could have been the worst
playoff performance I've ever seen in my life. So they got a shot. And if you can make
us game seven happen, then they probably win. But can you win game six?
Jeff Fregard put in the lockdown line squad show. Based on that, can you join me later this
afternoon for our lockdown pistons squad show? I'll talk to your booking agent and we'll get
a two for one on the book. I'm exhausted. No offense, but I'm renting time in this office.
Do you really think I can come to this office, whatever I want?
With that view, yeah, right. It's worth the rental price.
I can't make that look. Yeah, I mean, happens are looking down upon you. That's all I can say.
So yeah, the corner office, the view, all of it. I guess we could talk some Detroit lions.
We'll start with the draft stuff. Yeah, we'll get into Jack Campbell and Jamir Gibbs. We're
starting to talk about Gibbs. Obviously more to get to with Jack Campbell. But in the rear
of your mirror, looking at this draft, what do you think of the direction the lions win, specifically
rebuilding that offensive line with a little first round action from Blake Miller?
It's pretty amazing, isn't it? Because I think a lot of people were down on Brad Holmes.
I think after free agency people are like fire this guy. He doesn't know what he's doing. I can't
believe this is our GM. But he did something that I think kind of shocked people. He drafted for
a position in need. And maybe it was the best player available to. But let's be honest,
Mike Miller, right? Right, right. Exactly. Like Miller, then you knew everybody knew they were
going to take a right tackle, right? And I think it's funny because just because we thought they
were going to take a right tackle and everybody in the universe had them working out all the tackles.
I think we kind of still doubted because it's always been best player available. But Brad, I think
what a lot of people back in his corner. And I don't know if it works or not because Blake Miller,
position of the aid, you helped the offensive line that was a problem last year. Derek Moore,
finally, you got somebody opposite of Hutch. And whether you like the player or not,
at least you like the fact that you have another edge or at least somebody that can spell Hutch.
And then even Jimmy Rolder, right? Does he replace Alex Anzaloni? So two Michigan guys. And then
you even got some Arizona State cornerback depth with Keith Abney. And you know, you need help
there. So I like the draft because I'm not going to get caught up in the players because we never
know if these players are going to work out. But I like the position of need. The only thing I wonder
about and Bradford, I need your thoughts Natalie Jake. Did you see what the Lions did?
That the Lions on social media would a picture of Derek Moore and Jimmy Rolder bearing down
and eight in trials. And it was some kind of statement like, oh, we got a couple of Michigan men.
And I'm like, oh my god, they are alienated after fan base because for everybody that likes it
because they're Michigan guys, all the Michigan state people are like, oh my god, we're a little
brother. Shut up with this crap. I thought that was kind of interesting.
I didn't see it, but now I'm upset. Oh, I see, see, see, I got off the show.
Yeah, I saw it. I thought in the world of social media, like that's definitely a statement.
And on top of that, I think the the fallout from it is kind of hilarious because now it's turned
into into a whole bit when you know, you have a lion, the lion's admins taken some serious heat
for that because it just, you know, when not that I'm the social Natalie is the social media
extraordinaire amongst the locked-on lion squad show, but it just seemed like an obvious no-no.
And especially now me, Aiden Childs, that's my guy Northwestern Wildcats starting quarterback.
So I got to look out for my guy. Yep, yep, go cats had to mix that in there.
But, but yeah, it was, it was very odd to see that now and I was upset for you.
Thank you. Appreciate that, Jake. Someone's got to be on my side here with my Smarties.
I mean, especially when it's the national championship of basketball, the Spartan, I'll take you
as well. I mean, come on, we're just looking at beating up and Eastlancing right now with all this.
You guys got meth labs. Did you see that? You've got meth labs on camera. Let's add to it.
Yeah. I saw that start. Can't have those. That's breaking, that's breaking out and Eastlancing.
This is why we're the fun school, all right?
She can stay. It's got the fun, the social, the meth labs, the, whatever you want to make.
Yeah, it's a good ag school. What a marketing scheme, right? Hey, come to Michigan State.
We burned couches and we have meth labs.
Listen, and we have huge farm surrounding. It always smells like cow poop in the spring. I mean,
why wouldn't you want to come up to Eastlancing? Well, you're selling me out at night.
Another stream of revenue. There you go. All right. Who's making the, the seamless transition
into a, into a Jack Campbell question here. I think I've hit my allotment here. So, reader Jack
Campbell, Nat. Yeah, I was going to say, I mean, Reeger, what is your read on Gibbs getting the
fifth year and, and not Campbell? Was it just smart cap management to you or what, what's your take on
this? It's economics, right? I mean, I think I, I am a, I am no capologist. I do know, I know
that shocked people. I'm very bright. But I was, what is that funny? I'm just thinking of all
the shows I produce for you. Most topics would start like, hey, don't actually listen to me,
but now I'm going to tell you a reason to listen to me for the next five minutes. And, and, you know,
you kind of, I love it. It just, it reminds me of the good old days. You invited me. Just don't
forget that. Okay. This was your decision to make, to make all your viewers watch me.
That's right. Good help. It's fine. It's amazing. Well, let's be honest. My price is right. I'm sure.
No, but I think it's just economics, right? I mean, Campbell gets lumped in with all the linebackers.
So his fifth year would have cost what, 21, 22 million, well, Gibbs is around 15 million. I think
we know they're resigning both these guys. And if you like it, or if you don't like it, I think
we know what Brad intends to do. So for the time being, I love the fifth year on Jamir simply
because is there a chance? Everybody loves Jamir Gibbs. And the dude could win MVP this year,
right? Like he should be in that conversation offensive player of the year. But at the same time,
he's running back. And he's got a lot of mileage on his body. And I do wonder at some point,
do you really want to extend him long term instead of just playing the short game, which is,
hey, do your best for us now. We'll give you the fifth year option. We could franchise you if we
need be. And then we don't have to give you this enormous, sake one, Barclay type contract.
And maybe it turns out that way, but I kind of think they still sign Gibbs long term. As for Campbell,
they're going to sign him long term. They need him. He's been outstanding. He's been a breakout
player. He's only going to get better. He's the heart and soul of that defense. So I think it
makes sense just for salary cap stuff. But before the season starts, don't you fully expect both
guys an announcement to come out that they've both been extended? Yeah, I really do rigs.
And here's the thing you're talking about making sense for the salary cap where a lot of people
don't realize, and I may be incorrect in saying this, but I think I think I am correct in saying
this is that his position gets lumped in with the edges as well. And that's where the salary
starts to get inflated. And you're talking about $21, $22 million if you include him in that
fifth year option. And, you know, does he feel disrespected? No, he doesn't feel disrespected.
He knows what's coming down the pipeline. You know, just what it does, it creates content for
people like us to get on the show and start talking about things like this. But, you know,
and but here's the one thing that you have to realize if they don't get this done before the
beginning of the season, if he goes out and starts to have a monster season and then they have
these talks, this price is only going to go up. Yep. Yeah, it's interesting. Like it was funny,
people in Dallas here on the fan are starting to think they were having the conversation,
oh, is Jack Campbell going to be available? He's not going to be available. I just, and it's
funny the way, I mean, this time of year, especially any headline like that, all the sudden aggregators
just take that and get the ball roll, the snowball rolling down the hill to try to, you know,
stir things up. But I don't think there's any doubt that he will obviously be a part of the
Detroit lines. Yes, sir. That's the best part of sports radio. And just in general, what we
do for a living, isn't it? Like, going out and spending a topic or a segment and saying like,
like, for instance, Brady could shock from the Ottawa Senators, which is the interview
yesterday. And they're like, right? Yeah, somebody here from TSN, are you unhappy in Canada?
And I know he is because he was treated so unfairly when Team USA beat those Canadians. And you know,
he wants out of Ottawa. And at no point did he say like, I love being here. He just said,
hey, man, I've done my job this entire time, which of course means you should do a topic.
Would you trade for Brady Kachak? The exact same thing with Jack Campbell. I mean, it's phenomenal.
No doubt, no doubt. Well, Regar, you've, you've already spent a lot of time with us, which we
appreciate. So we'll get you out the door on this. A nice walkoff homer for the Brage yesterday
Matt Olsen to run bomb. We were talking how it just happened almost like, yeah, I'm the
negative one. How concerned should we be about the Tigers, both then and other off-season
lion stuff on the way out? So I do think, and again, I am not a pobo of president of baseball
operations, but I would say the one rule you should live by, if your closer is 38 years old,
you might possibly wonder if he's the guy you should be bringing in. I know Kenley Janssen is
otherworldly. He is this historically great closer. One of the best ever to do it since like
Mariano Rivera. But man, three blown saves in six attempts. Was it nine attempts? So what six
saves? Yeah, he's been bad. Yeah, whatever it's been, it's been bad. I think they might have a
bullpen problem. I think Tyler Holton, they wore him out. So he's no longer that lefty that you
want to go to. Will Vest is only good in safe situations. So maybe a move him back to being a closer.
I mean, Kyle Finnegan's walking dudes left and right now. So you started this, but I am concerned
about their bullpen. It's Eric Scooble was great yesterday, but they should be fine. Here's the
beauty of the Tigers. They legitimately can finish five games under 500 and still win the division
because that division is so that Cleveland is 16 and 16 and they're in first place right now.
So I think they have a bullpen problem. I do, but I also think that it's almost like the ghost of
Joe Nathan has resurrected and come back to the Tigers in the form of Kenley Janssen.
That's a good start with the 38 39-year-old closers. That is my advice to Scott Harris if he's
listening, which I'm sure he's not. Although I need a big fan of you guys. Yes, huge fan of the show.
We're a huge fan of you, Jeff Rieger, and we'll see you for Lockdown Pistons later on today.
I'll shoot you the link. No, and I'm renting out office space. If anybody wants to,
rent is very cheap. In this day and age, it's very expensive to rent out offices. You can rent
this one for very cheap. Yeah, here's one thing that I want to do though. You talk about ringers
in the mobile office. Next time we have you on the show, the only request I have is that you're
mobile and you're actually so we can change the scenery as moving. Let me help you out with that.
I'm talking about. Brad, Brad, this is just for you. Hold on one second.
One second. We think it's so great out there. That's what's awesome.
Well, reason why you should rent at Rieger offices.
There you go, Brad. Hello, Steve. Let's get out here. There we go.
Okay, okay. I was going to ask when's your next tea time?
I'm hoping next week. Let's talk. Let's go. I've become that old golfer. I'm 50 years old.
I know I look at least 45, but I've become that old golfer that is now golfed by myself two days
in a row. So I will go out to a chorus by myself and I think people might think I'm a loser,
but at the same time, this is where my life has ended up. Are you or are you and are you in hat
and sunglasses? So nobody asked before an autograph? No, nobody knows. Trust me. Trust me.
My whole I know you guys got to go, but my dream in life, you know, how dreams the older you get,
the bigger dreams you have and how dreams kind of become, they change, right? It used to be my
dream, you know, like every person, like a supermodel girlfriend and make it in this business,
all that kind of stuff. Now my dream is to be noticed on the golf course to hit a beautiful shot,
like in a par three, to get it with an inches of the hole. And some onlookers like, oh,
that golfers really good. And for somebody to walk away with the impression that I can actually
play this game, that is my dream in life. That's all I ask for. Somebody to think that I'm a stick,
if you will. Yes. Way to way to aim high. And hey, next time next time I'm up in a mission,
we'll play some golf looking forward to it. And there he goes, Jeff Rieger,
971, the ticket, whoops, I cut him off as he was saying, buying everything. But,
wow, you never know where a Jeff Rieger interview is going to go. He's out there in the mobile office
and showing us the golf clubs and everything else, just outstanding stuff from Jeff Rieger.
He's so entertaining. I just, he's something else.
Yeah, it's, it is good for the show. I liked that he whipped out his golf clubs there at the
end, because it makes me want to go play now. Yeah. How's the weather up there? It's beautiful day.
Yeah. So it's a little nippy, little nippy, I think it's 50s. But I will say this, we have been two
for two with guests, meaning with dairy and with Rieger, both with some comments and both of them
putting their hand over their eyes. So yeah. So it's been, it's been good. You never know the
shock factor that we're going to bring. Yeah. That's a great point. That's a great point. What did,
I'm trying to think what did dairy say that had the shock value? Oh, no, it's what we said.
I was trying to, it was whenever he initially came on the show, he started the show just like,
no, I'm sorry, it was like this. He started the show like that. Yeah, we always
said whatever we were talking about before. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, oh, I remember now. Yeah, we always
start the interviews with the bank. We have to, you have to. All right, let's go ahead and
keep the lights on, take one quick time out and be back in just a second on a live lockdown line
squad show. It's live, locked on line squad show. And today's episode is brought to you by
indeed. Oh, good news. We already touched on that. We'll be back.
Look at that. That's why you do it live. You know, you pull up break number two and there's no
ad read there and you just cruise right along. So locked on line squad show. Our thanks to Jeff
Reeger for joining the program and time now for some hats notes. What's going on, Nat? Sure.
Let's dive into a couple things. So I don't know if you guys saw that the lions that was rumored,
they were, they had interest in moving up to pick 13 instead of saying it's 17, but so that
would have meant that, you know, the Rams had picked 13 and they came out saying that the offers
they got were quote soft. Oh, soft. When you, when you describe offers as soft, that's, uh,
that's uh, that's no worthy. I know. It is. So I just had to make note of that because obviously we
were talking about Sean McVeigh and his reaction to Ty Simpson and that really got us going last
episode. Guys, not to bring up a source subject or anything. Yeah. That's why Nat's in the middle to
break, break it up between. I am. I was sitting here and I'm like, oh, look at that. He doesn't like
that. He doesn't like that. No, it was, it was a great, great frank honest discussion. It's just
two opposing viewpoints. It was great. They went, you know what? That's what makes great sports,
radio, podcasting, all the things, varying opinions, right? Um, when an offer though is described
as soft, not that we know the details of this, but I'm just curious what we think that means.
I don't, I'm just putting out to you guys like, well, what do we think soft actually means in this
case? But I mean, just flat out the Rams didn't like the return on the on the proposal. That's
all it is. And to use that adjective, I mean, that's just a shot across the bow because obviously
Brad Holmes has relationships with less need and McVeigh since he was at the Rams prior to coming
over and taking the GM job with the Lions. It is what it is. You know, it's an, it's an adjective.
It's something that we can make a big deal out of. It's talking fodder, uh, but them to actually
single out a one word, uh, that the, I mean, that the Rams use concerning a team that called them.
And then we automatically speculate because I'm not going to use the word assume because that
would include myself as well. Uh, I'm going to speculate or people are speculating that it was
the Detroit Lions calling up because of the fourth round picks and with the Lions not having any,
was it third round picks next year? I think it is. Uh, they are speculating that it was the Lions.
Now will it ever ever come to light? I mean, we're going to have to subpoena the, you know,
the phone bill for both the Rams and the Lions to get down to the heart of the matter because I
don't think that either club will come out publicly and admit that it was, you know, the Rams
speaking with the Lions or the Lions speaking with the Rams. Great vocab there by the way. Hey,
I appreciate it. Yeah, that's like the Lincoln lawyer stuff. That's the only reason I know what
that word means when I'm watching Lincoln lawyer on Netflix. I need to show that show by the way.
Oh, it might be my top Netflix show of all time. Oh, man. Yeah, it's, it's binge worthy. Oh,
absolutely. I'm adding it to my list. Oh, absolutely. Yeah. Okay. You do that. You, you know,
you watch that and then you go watch the movie. Yeah. And then you put you, but you got to read the book
as well. I've got you're making me do a lot here. Yeah. I've got two of the three done.
Two of the three and it's obviously movie and show. I was going to say, Jake, you've not read a book.
Oh, wow. I didn't mean it like that. I've got some books here. Look it. I didn't even like that,
but I got this paperback. No, I just didn't take it to be a big book reader, but maybe I'm wrong.
I got the history of why we love football. Let's see what other book do I have? Like Bradford,
I see you as a book reader. Am I wrong on that? No, you're correct. Yeah. I don't know. Just give
the vibe. I read sometimes another book right here. Got lots of books. Okay. This is called
When We Are Free. And it was written by the founders of my great institution, Northwood University.
There's about free enterprise and the values upon which our country was founded upon. And I'll leave
it at that. Okay. I'm going to this look cover to cover cover to cover cover to cover. Cover to cover
multiple times. Yeah. More than notes. More than notes. All right. Well, to end on that first
point, Lions obviously got the guy that they wanted. So it worked out for them in the end without
having to give up anything, which is good. Rookie mini camp. The Lions are the only team that will
not hold mini camp this season, which I found interesting to be the only team in the league.
Brad basically said they've determined more valuable ways to spend their time as they look to
adjust and improve their process. So I'm just curious as to what that really means. Not holding it
is it more of just them trying to be innovative and do something totally different? Or how do you guys
see that? I don't know. And Bradford, what exactly does Rookie mini camp entail in those few days
that they get all the guys together? So back in the day, the Rookie mini camp, well, the Rookie
mini camp started, I want to say somewhere in the 2000s. And then it continues on to this day.
Whenever I was drafted, it was straight into mandatory mini camp. And you were, you know,
for lack of a better term, you were indoctrinated into general population and thrown to the wolves.
And you're like, good luck, buddy. Go figure it out. And, you know, there were no TAs. You went from
mandatory mini camp, working out, and then you go into trade, you take a little break, and then
you go to training camp. The Rookie mini camp, whenever it first started out, was a series of five
practices. And you definitely have, and it's, you know, you have basically two days for two days,
and then one practice, and then everybody's out. And it was a chance to get physical eyes on
your draft picks, and a chance to get physical eyes on to your UDFAs, your undrafted
reagents that you signed to contracts, and you were having them come to camp.
But it also, depending on how you operated, teams, certain teams operate a different way,
and you can just have that crew in, or you can have other players come in on a tryout basis.
And it's players that you're definitely interested in, but you didn't want to sign to a camp
contract, or to a contract to bring them in for training camp. And it gave the coaches, and it
gave the personnel a chance to get eyes on these players that were just on a tryout basis to see
if they couldn't improve their roster. I think over the years, it's evolved into just kind of,
hey, we're having a rookie minicamp. And you're finding more and more teams are getting away
from this rookie minicamp. Why? Because they are, they don't want to take the chance on players
getting hurt. And let's say you have a drafted player going up against a player that's coming in on
a tryout basis, and that drafted player coming in on a tryout basis goes up against the, you know,
your draft pick. And he injures that draft pick in this camp because they're going at two
two different speeds, which they shouldn't, but the other guy, the guy that's not going to
training camp wants to make an impression. So he's going as hard as he can, and they're just in
helmets. That's it. So, you know, in any injures that draft pick, well, you're like, damn,
you know, I wish that wouldn't have happened. And then on the flip side of that,
this is the business side, let's say that that tryout player gets injured during your rookie minicamp.
Well, now you're on the hook to play, to pay that player X amount of money to really
buy him out from getting injured. And I've, you know, just talking about stories. I've seen at the
end of training camp, I've seen players that know they're going to get cut at the end of training
camp. And they will go over to the jugs machine. And they will turn that jugs machine up to
some ungodly miles per hour on the jugs machine. And they'll try to break a finger.
Really? Yeah, just so they can get paid.
Just so they can get paid. They're not going to get paid for the whole season, but they're going
to get an injury settlement. Yeah. Oh, it's nuts. Because you see coaches, you see coaches that come
out and they see what's going on. And they know what's going on. And you have personnel and you
have people that monitor it. And you make the managers aware of this of what's going on. And
some of the man, we tell the managers, we're like, no, you keep the speed at this. You know, if so-and-so
is coming out and let's just say trying to catch balls, you know, prior to practice.
And it's a nuts situation, but that's how desperate some of these people get whenever they want
to secure, you know, X amount of money for X amount of time, depending on the injury that you
sustain, though you get paid so many weeks out. Wow. That's wild. Yeah. I never.
The injury stuff makes sense as far as why a team wouldn't have rookie mini-camp. I'm somewhat
surprised by the ratio of the Lions being the only team that's not. I think they're going to be
starting a trend. Yeah. To be honest with you, they're going to be starting a trend where because
now, nowadays, the rookie mini-camp is pretty much a joke. And there's little field time. It's mainly
classroom. You're indoctrinating. Really, the players, the draft picks, and then the players that
you signed to camp contracts, the UDFAs, you're indoctrinating them to the offense, the defense,
and the special teams. And a lot of teams will just go out and they'll have walkthroughs.
And really, that's it. Like I said, it's kind of a joke. So why not get rid of it? And then
just indoctrinate the people that you have come into camp and indoctrinate them into the, again,
general population. And because they're all going to be teammates at the end of the day. And
let's get rolling with our crew sooner rather than later. I think that's going to be a trend. And
it's also going to be a talking point whenever it comes to the next collective bargaining agreement.
Whenever they start talking about this, because by not having this rookie mini-camp,
you're saving on contract, you're saving on travel, you're saving on transportation,
to and from the complex, you're saving on payment of these players for them to come to the
rookie mini-camp. And you're also, you know, it's just, it's a cost-saving measure. But
it makes sense to do that just from an overall football perspective. Why not just get the people
in the building that you want in the building and not just go through the semantics. And I think
this is step one of what the Lions did in the early part of the offseason and reassessing the way
they went about doing business. Because it just, and they knew something needed to be changed.
And this is the beginning of that process of what's getting changed. The second thing that came
to light is no joint practices with other teams. So that came out before this came out. But
it's, I think they're setting the trend.
So with no rookie mini-camp, then, are they going to, do you think they'd replace it with something
else? Or it's just, there's just nothing that's going to happen until official OTAs.
Yeah, so right now, they're according to the CBA, they're in phase two. And phase two of the
offseason program allows the players to meet with the coaches. It also allows them to go out
onto the field. And if I can be, I can, you know, stand to be corrected in saying this.
But you are not allowed to go up against a player across the line of scrimmage from you.
You can do stuff on air. But you can't go up against somebody across the line of scrimmage from you.
Unless it's in a walk through type situation where there's no contact because there's no helmets
being worn right now. No Oklahoma drills, son. But you could have them. They just need to be
take place a couple of miles down the road. Oh, good, good, good. Love it. Yeah.
That's all I got today, guys, for my notes. I love it. I love it. Nats notes. We got one more
segment. One more segment. We closed it out with some banter with banter. That's next.
I'm live. Locked. I'm lying squad. She'll back in a second.
I told you. Holy cow. Man, I just looked ready. My notes aren't ready. I was going to use
this thunder in the head region. I do that sometimes, rapper. That's what the, that's what the
Andry. They're totally caught me off guard. Oh my gosh. Well, I could do. Let's see which one I could
do off of. Well, maybe I should do my five hour. I know which one you should do. But I know you're
not going to do it. But anyway, you know, talking, talking with Rieger, talking with Rieger,
you know, he, he brought up, he made me think of a story. All right. I love stories.
So this is whenever I was out of USC. And so Rieger went through this whole thing,
you know, yesterday at the game, correct? You know, this lady walks up to him and says, Hey,
can I have your autograph? And so he starts signing and all of a sudden she asked the question,
why on earth she would ask that question of, who are you? After you've already asked,
you know, can you, can I get an autograph? Yeah. Yeah. By that time, you know, is it a blank,
and he brought up a good point. It could be a court order. You know, it could be getting served
or something like that. But, you know, I would look at the paper, what I'm signing, you know,
if she were to ask that question and then slowly go rip. So, but it's, it, it made me think of a time
it was my second year out at USC. And we were going to, do you remember the kickoff classic
that they played in the metal lands? Yes. Okay. All right. So my second year and we were playing
the University of Syracuse back then in the kickoff classic. And this was out at the metal lands in
New York. So you go from LA to New York, all this kind of stuff. So what entails that game is you
get out there a couple days ahead of time and they give you a little tour of the city and you're
able to go do some things that really the normal public wouldn't get to do. And one of the things
that we were able to do, they, we were able to go to the New York Stock Exchange. And we were
sitting up in the observatory. And you probably, I don't know, 30 feet off the ground looking at the
floor and all these kind of stuff. And it's just like Ferris Bueller's Day off, you know, whatever
his buddy was like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. You know, the hand signals and all that kind of stuff in.
Can we record that sound so we have it? We forgot to do it with Rieger.
Oh, yeah. Anyway, anyway, let me, let me, let me, let me finish up here. So they come up and a couple
people from New York Stock Exchange are just like, hey, we want to take about five guys down on the floor.
And my hand just immediately went up.
I'm like, I'm your guy, I'm your guy,
they're like, all right, you come with me.
So in that time, I had hair.
And it was, you know, I had red hair, okay.
And so I go down on the floor, and you know,
we're sitting there, we're talking,
we're talking to a couple traders
and ask them how everything's done.
Just it was a slow day on the trading floor,
which was kind of nice because you were able
to talk to these guys.
And, you know, this guy comes up to me and he's like,
hey, just like regor, hey, can I have an autograph?
And I'm like, I'm in my second year,
I've, you know, it's my red shirt freshman year.
So I, you know, I've done my freshman year,
I redshirted and I didn't even play the down yet.
And his guy's coming up to me and he's like,
oh, you know, USC football player,
let me get your autograph.
And I was like, yeah, sure.
And he goes, thanks, Todd, I appreciate it.
And I'm like, I sit there and I just go with the flow.
And I sit there and I'm like, you know, I was like,
oh, Todd, great.
So I sign it, Todd Merinovitch, number 13,
fight on USC, somewhere out there,
there's somebody who's got a Todd Merinovitch autograph
that's trying to sell it on eBay that has no matching
qualities to the original Todd Merinovitch autograph.
Oh my gosh, I am just looking up pictures
of Todd Merinovitch right now.
And you know, I actually, I'm gonna back the,
I'm gonna back the guy a little bit here.
I, or that, I need to look this up.
Oh, don't worry, look at my.
Oh.
There you go.
Okay.
All right.
Yeah, even though I was about 40 pounds heavier
than what Todd was.
So yeah, okay.
I can see it.
Did you tell Todd that you signed?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
No, I went immediately up to him after I got back up
in the observatory and I was like, hey, man,
I go, just FYI, I'll go, I just signed your name.
Somebody came up to me and said, hey, Todd,
and I want your autograph.
I'm like, yeah, sure.
Why not?
And so it's, you know, it's just little stuff like that.
You have fun and you make the most of it
and you don't want to dampen the guy's day, right?
You're just like, okay, yeah, I'll be Todd
for the next minute or two.
So no problem.
That's so funny.
All right, I got one more for you guys.
So for all of our YouTube viewers here,
we can do a.
Mr. Cold picture.
Yeah.
Look at that guy.
Look at that guy.
Yeah.
I can see it though.
The similarities between people.
Oh, absolutely.
Yeah.
It's a handsome dude.
No doubt.
No doubt.
I think the two right there, that I get.
I'm part of hair on the other side though, you know.
Yeah, that's true.
That's true.
And you at the time, you were outside linebacker, right?
No, tight end, tight end.
Yep.
Yep, tight end.
So there you go.
That is hilarious, man.
The story's banter with Banta.
It never, never disappoints.
So I do think that for our highly anticipated
lockdown lines squad outing for whenever I'm back in Michigan
our happy hour meet and greet.
There's gonna be a lot of people that want our autographs.
And I can't wait for it.
It's gonna be great.
You know what we need to do?
You know what we need to do?
We need to do a show where all three of us
are in the same room.
Ooh, now we're talking.
Yeah.
That'd be fun.
I think that would be a blast.
I think that would be a blast.
Something like, I don't know, somewhere in Detroit.
It'd be, it'd be rural and household.
Yeah.
For that.
For that.
It would be really easy to set up.
So we could absolutely make that happen.
I just need to find my way to Michigan.
So Sid and I know the fiance is not watching,
but if she were, I would say, hey, let's figure out
how to get back to Michigan.
But future.
She's on her bass party, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Where's she at?
I couldn't tell.
Nashville.
Nashville.
They just landed.
And if there's one thing, I just don't want to be heard from,
or I don't want to hear from them the entire weekend
because I just don't think that conversation is one
that I want to have unless they're in danger
or something catastrophic's happened, yes.
But other than that, I don't need the drunk face time
in videos and here.
You want that?
No, you know, here in Shania Twang,
I feel like a woman.
Just let them have their weekend, you know?
I'm going to Venmo them a couple of rounds of drinks
and they can have at it.
But I'm going to keep the furthest arms length
as possible away from the bachelor at party.
That's the plan.
What is your bachelor party?
Oh, great question.
We will have to adjust our schedule two weeks.
Two weeks.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, we are flying out to St. George, Utah.
It is a golf slash off-roading trip.
Oh, yeah.
I'm trapped for a night, both.
What?
Yeah.
Yes, a lot of people.
Utah.
I'm going to Utah.
We're going for your bachelor party, man.
Miami, Vegas.
You know, guys, New York.
I'm going to Utah.
Yeah, I'm going to Northern Indiana.
Yeah.
You know, I actually, I love that this
has become a topic of conversation.
But when you see, you know, the potential for the mountain golf,
we're taking jeeps through Zion.
Why am I getting the shake in the head?
Well, the old one is beautiful.
The scenery is beautiful.
I'll send pictures.
Unbelievable.
Thank you, Jake.
You saw that.
It sits at the same thing.
I'm like, wait a second.
I think this is cool.
I like it.
I know we've never met.
But I like it.
Yeah, her is a special guest.
Oh, boy, that would be, you know, maybe we can make it happen.
If there's somehow a West Virginia university tie with the lines,
maybe we could make that happen.
Here's a question I have for you then.
So you don't want to hear from her.
But yet, whenever you go on yours,
you're going to be sending her message and pictures to the Lord
of everything that you're doing.
I don't know.
But this is one of the courses that we're playing.
So I mean, and this is just a screenshot.
So imagine in real life.
So I and we've been neglecting all of our audio only listeners,
which I apologize for,
but we've been showing pictures of Bradford, Banta,
where I'm going to play golf and.
Don't hit it right there.
OK.
But wow, I can't believe I, you guys
think I'm a big dweeb for going to St. George E.
Utah.
Listen, so you're golfing.
You're riding ATVs through Zion.
Yeah.
Is there a bar scene nearby?
Is there a guy?
It's Utah, Natalie.
Yeah, you can go and serve Coke.
Yes, that is.
No, they don't even serve Coke.
No, no, you can get drinks in Utah.
But one at a time, water.
So here's what I thought.
I shouldn't get iced tea.
Oh my gosh, yes, you can.
I should have, I should have led with this.
We're flying, we're flying into Vegas the first day.
We're going to do it.
Hang on.
They're not going to make it to Utah.
I'm going to go to Utah.
I want to stay.
I lost the egg.
I don't know where he is.
Find him on the roof.
Yeah, yeah.
That's another part.
I'm going to have some message.
Yeah, based on the crew that I'm going with,
it's probably better that they're the distractions
and the, I'll just say, temptations
of getting into trouble, not the other kind of temptations,
but getting into trouble, got to be out of sight, out of mind
with me.
I will partake.
I have no self control.
And it could be an episode of the hangover.
So we're going to keep it all calculated inside at Airbnb.
We're going to have tons of drinks there.
We'll just, and we won't get into as much trouble that way.
Are you someone though that will go on their phone and try
and talk to Sid?
Ooh.
Bradford Shakin has said, yeah.
I, many times, have been especially when it comes to golf.
I just will be off my phone for hours on it.
And I'll go days without talking to Sid, which
is probably not great on golf.
You're fine.
Oh, yeah.
No, sometimes she'll say, hey, do I still have a fiance?
You kind of check a little check in.
I know, I know.
That's why I'm laughing at Bradford.
Like, I appreciate that.
I wish I was that way.
But no, if I'm working on that, I'm working on, you know,
there was a lot of times where Sid would describe me as, hey,
it's just my world and everybody else is just living in it.
So I'm working on that.
Oh my gosh.
I'm learning so much on this podcast.
I like what we say of like this banter segment for the end.
And it just leads to whatever topic, because listen,
if I was Sid, I'd be mad too.
No, she's never mad.
She's just like, hey, you could communicate
a little bit more often, which is true.
She's got a good point.
So yeah, there's some relationship advice, not from me,
from others, because I'm certainly not qualified for qualified
to provide it.
But what a show.
What a show.
What a show, guys, we hit the hour mark.
This is too much.
This is the best.
I hope all your listeners enjoyed this one.
You know, we go off the rails and just start doing whatever.
And why not end it with relationship advice?
I kind of want to hear Bradford's take.
But that's a nice tease, a nice tease for next week.
We will next week.
Our agents' point of context haven't got together
to decide what time and when.
But that's why you set your alarm
up for the number one sports podcast platform.
Like and subscribe, all that good stuff.
For the 20-year NFL veteran Bradford Banta,
Detroit Pistons, sideline reporter Natalie Kerwin,
my name's Jake Reeman.
Thanks so much for joining us on the Lockdown Lions
Quad Show.
We'll see you next time.
Goodbye.
