Living the Torah You Learn [Day 179 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Torah 3]
About this episode
In this lesson from the Gate of Torah (Shaar HaTorah), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explains that Torah study is not merely an activity—it is meant to become the very occupation of a Jew. Just as a business owner is always thinking about their business, even after locking the store for the day, so too Torah should remain at the center of a person's heart and mind at all times. Through constant engagement with Torah, a person acquires wisdom, humility, refined character, awe of Hashem, and countless other virtues, while meriting immeasurable reward both in this world and in the World to Come.
Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that Torah study alone is not enough—the true measure of Torah is whether it transforms the way we live. A scholar who teaches justice while acting unjustly undermines the very Torah he proclaims. The greatness of Torah is realized only when learning inspires action, integrity, and authentic character. Torah is not merely information to be taught; it is a way of life to be embodied.
The lesson also explores the importance of learning Torah lishmah—for the sake of Torah itself. Through the story of Elisha ben Avuyah's father, Rabbi Wolbe illustrates that when Torah is pursued for honor alone, its spiritual foundation is weakened. Nevertheless, our Sages encourage every Jew to study Torah, even if their initial motivations are imperfect, because sincere Torah study has the power to elevate a person's intentions over time. One who begins for personal reasons can ultimately arrive at learning purely for the sake of Heaven.
Finally, Rabbi Wolbe reminds us that every mitzvah learned with excitement carries immense value, even if circumstances prevent us from physically performing it. The Torah is infinite; every verse contains a lifetime of wisdom waiting to be uncovered. The journey of Torah study never truly ends—it continually deepens, inspires, and draws us closer to Hashem.
