We can't wait to see everybody over there.
Because this is a great time to be a Longhorn's fan.
So much going on on the 40 acres between basketball and basketball and softball and baseball.
But we do get football practice, spring practice back this week.
We'll have that covered.
But in addition, Tuesday, tomorrow, Texas is hosting its pro day.
Obviously, the Longhorn sent seven to the combine.
And those guys will either try to improve upon their physical benchmarks that they set up there in the enapolis.
But it's also an opportunity for them to meet with teams.
But something you touched on last year that I think is important to kind of...
...use to introduce the topic is this is the last time so many of these guys are going to be teammates.
You know, there's no big three.
There's no the basketball tournament in football right now.
So you can't get all these like former Longhorn's to come back and and be part of a, you know, second tier event.
All these guys have NFL aspirations.
And yeah, maybe they'll be drafted the same team.
But they're never going to be on the same team as Longhorn's again, except for tomorrow.
And I think that's something you noted last year.
It's a really interesting way of looking at such a process oriented results driven as well event like pro day.
Yeah, that was my big takeaway from last year, Joe.
Obviously, I went there to write up article for David Vinda, which still felt proud of that one.
And obviously, David was a great Longhorn.
And hopefully he can end up somewhere in the NFL one of these days.
But I just noticed how last year obviously it was a little bit bigger class headed to the pros than it was.
Then it's going to be tomorrow.
So there was a lot of guys in your Longhorn workout stuff really being led by Tory Bechton and kind of their last on campus workout, if you will.
But man, they were they were all working on individual things obviously, but it was still a collective goal.
They were obviously all there together to boost their their draft stock.
And you had guys who are going into the NFL guys who are staying on campus.
But it was the last chance to really look at that 2024 team one more time.
And tomorrow is going to offer us the same thing.
It's really going to be the probably the last time you see an Anthony Hill or a Michael Taff competed something on the 40 acres.
Obviously, they'll be back.
They'll be lifelong Longhorn's their chance to be honored on a sunny Saturday.
Some fall will come and I'm sure they'll be long longhorn hall of honor members one of these days.
If not here pretty soon, but I think it's it's really the last chance people will be able to witness this team in these guys who have given so much to Steve Sarkeesian in the burn orange compete one last time, which is, which is pretty special.
And I'm glad that I'm I'm able to see that as somebody who obviously writes and covers the team, but is also, you know, first and foremost is a fan.
One of the things that will go over Texas had seven players go to the combine.
I think everybody did maybe what they wanted to do.
You know, Malik Muhammad, Michael Taff, Anthony Hill, Traymore, Jack Andrews, DJ Campbell, all posted, you know, nothing that was really glaringly bad.
But, you know, all these guys are going to have opportunities to meet with teams.
We've seen 30 plus teams show up.
We've seen head coaches show up. We've seen GM show up.
I I can spot the Texans GM and his power stance from a mile away.
But there's someone who does have a big opportunity in front of him.
And that's Jalen Gilbo.
Jalen Gilbo really was not able to do a whole lot at the combine.
As I look at it, I don't think he went through any testing and you know, his invite to the combine was a little bit surprising.
I feel like so I bet we'll see a lot of these guys.
If they posted times they were happy with at the combine, they're going to probably stand on those results.
When you look at Malik Muhammad and his 4-4-2 and you know, Anthony Hill with his 4-5-1, those are going to be guys happy with their 40.
And that's just an example. But for for someone like Jalen Gilbo, this is huge because he had the chance to meet with teams.
I think his invite was a little surprising to even Texas fans.
And now he's going to have the opportunity to showcase, you know, he's he is a fast player.
He's got good size. Sometimes it didn't all mesh together on the field.
But this is a time when teams are looking for something to wild them as far as physical testing goes.
Yeah, Gilbo is obviously the one that if you look back at last year, he's the closest comparison that you have to like a Gunner Helmer and Isaiah Bond.
And as somebody who went to the combine but then goes into pro day really was something to prove.
Because for the most part, all of the guys who like you said, ran in anyapolis.
I don't expect any of them to run again. You don't have like a Isaiah Bond situation from last year who was disappointed in his 40 time and then needed to run it again at pro day to show.
Actually, as fast as I was claiming to be, didn't quite get there either, but he did improve on the time at pro day nonetheless.
But then you had somebody like Gunner Helmer obviously tweak his ankle in his 40 and he wasn't even able to run at pro day last year in Austin.
So I think with Gilbo, he's going to obviously really be treating this like the combine and he's going to have everything to prove along with some guys.
I'm sure you'll know it will maybe got a snub snub as far as getting the invite to Indianapolis.
So it'll be interesting because it's really going to be NFL teams first look at these going through the measurable process for Jalen Gilbo.
Obviously they've talked to him already, but this is yeah, this is his combine tomorrow.
It feels like this is also an opportunity. And again, think of the seven combine guys, Malik Mohammed, Michael Taff, Anthony Hill, Traymore, Jack Andrews.
They all feel like pretty safe draft picks.
I think some of the questions just for Texas to all these players to answer are like just how high will they go?
Like there's only Anthony Hill really who's in contention to be a first round pick. This is a pretty strong linebacker class, especially at the top.
But I think Anthony Hill right outside of the elite to hear where an off-ball-ish linebacker could go within the first five to 10 picks.
He's going to be one of the first names you hear off the linebacker, but it's kind of a question of will he do something there to help him become a first round pick?
Well guys like Taff and Malik Mohammed do anything there to help them become day two picks.
And you know, for Traymore, DJ Campbell, Jack Andrews. And I think for Campbell especially, it's will you be able to get drafted.
I think injuries and more are going to find homes on NFL rosters and in the draft.
But for someone like Campbell who has, you know, is really athletic has a lot of experience.
This may be the opportunity he gets to show that he is worth a team spending a draft pick on him.
Yeah, and what I think is important for longhorn fans to note tomorrow is really more about where these long horns that are going into the NFL, where they can position themselves on an NFL teams individual board.
Because the combine, that's really what's going to move long horns as far as the mock drafts go in the Todd McShays and the Dane Brewers of the world.
I think that happens tomorrow if Todd McShay didn't put Anthony Hill and his mock draft on the first round that came out this morning.
I looked if he didn't put him in there, he's not going to do something tomorrow that then put makes Todd McShay put him in the first round.
But what could happen tomorrow is say, AFC or NFC coach or GM is there and they get a second chance to talk to Anthony Hill and they're picking at the end of the first round.
If they have that second conversation with him and they feel like, man, we value this guy and we're going to move him up on our board, got a second time to look at him, go through some workouts.
That's really where tomorrow can move the needle for some of these long horns in my opinion.
It as far as just inching themselves up, hopefully not down on these NFL teams individual boards because people forget that's what matters at the end of the day.
It doesn't matter where Mel Kiper has you on your best on the best available.
These teams have robust scouting offices and they have entire lists of whiteboards and papers and Google drives full of all the prospects that are going to hopefully hear their name called here in about a month.
And you want to just use pro day as your chance to move up that board if you can.
Looking at the aforementioned Todd McShay draft, I think this is the one that came out today.
There are only two linebackers going off the board in the first round on his mock draft.
It's Arville Reese to the Jets at two and sunny styles to the commanders at seven.
You look around the rest of the draft and hey, I'm not going to argue with those guys being the top two linebackers.
But those are the only two linebackers in the first round.
Then it becomes okay.
Does he do something to solidify himself maybe for a back end of the first round team?
I'm looking at the teams in that realm are the bills, the 49ers, Texans, Chiefs, Dolphins, Patriots and Seahawks and linebackers just not a premier position.
He's a softball linebacker unless you are just athletically gifted in ways most other humans are like styles and like Reese.
So, you know, we'll see if and you know, I'll push back.
What if Anthony Hill does something to run like a 442 that may change everybody's evaluation of him.
But I do agree with you.
It's just trying to find something that is a wow for these teams that do so much research that goes maybe past or is something new compared to the research they had.

One thing that we do need to go over is there were a number of Texas players who weren't invited to the combine
and that cliche about team success leads to individual success.
Man, if you really wanted to see that hold true this year was that a nine-and-three regular season team only had seven players invited to the combine.
One of the big snubs, of course, was Ethan Burke.
And I think there were a lot of Texas fans who wondered how, you know, if one four-year starter in Jalen Gilbert was invited who had his ups and downs,
especially in his last year as a longhorn, how did someone like Ethan Burke who was pretty much a solid starter at worst for three of his four seasons at Texas didn't get that invite.
So he is kind of the headlining name on tomorrow's list of participants who can really prove a lot with bench press with, you know, just measurables.
He is, I think, the one longhorn who didn't go to Indianapolis, who everybody's going to have their eye on tomorrow.
Yeah, I think Ethan Burke was hard for longhorn fans.
I think that was a snub that was hard for longhorn fans to stomach because, you know, not to throw a shade at somebody like Gilbo, he obviously was at Texas for a long time.
But, you know, the thing that you'll probably think about with Jalen Gilbert was more just him being a part of these teams.
There weren't really these signature moments that he had that even some of the other guys that got invited to Indianapolis.
You can kind of think of one or two memories or moments that all of those individual players had.
Gilbo, that's a little bit tougher, but with Ethan Burke.
I mean, he has a litany of them, the block field goal this year against Texas A&M, the goal line stop against Clemson and Texas A&M last year.
I mean, he has so many moments over his career and his time at Texas.
Obviously, being a West Lake guy, being a local kid, I think that's somebody that longhorn fans are always going to remember fondly and dearly and gave a lot to the program.
So it was a bit of a head scratcher, but I think for him tomorrow, he's got an amazing chance to prove himself that he's worth a day three pick to an NFL franchise.
And one thing you said, Joe, it made me want to revisit.
If I could tell myself last year when I was just going all in on predicting the long horns in 2025 to win the national championship and burn some bridges down as far as their competition goes.
I think I should have reminded myself, man, look at next year's draft.
Not that this team isn't talented, but look at the fact that this team just physically isn't going to be able to send that many people to the draft because it's a super young team.
And we saw in the last two years and obviously in other contenders like Indiana this year, Georgia and Ohio State and Michigan last year after Jim Harbaugh's last year.
Sending people the draft is really what is just a giant indicator of if a team is going to be in national championship contention, but this won't be the case next year.
Look at next year's if you can find a way to early mock drafts and you can find somebody reputable sources and oh my gosh, those first and second rounds are loaded with long horns.
Yeah, just off the top of the head, you can think of archmaning Trevor Gooseby, Colin Simmons, probably Kim Coleman, that's four right there.
So those four locks and then obviously then you have guys who like Jolani McDonald or Ryan Wingo who could potentially play themselves into the first round.
Yeah, and it gets very, very exciting really quick.
Some of the other names that, you know, and with pro day, you always see some guys come back, maybe who had transferred out, get an opportunity to come back and do their thing in Austin again because somebody guys, there's opportunities and Houston Dallas and Austin to train, maybe that there aren't elsewhere.
Of course, all of these guys are from Texas, but you know, there are also a handful of other players who were contributors this past year who could be going through this and just kind of back to the napkin names.
I wrote down in addition to Ethan Bert, Matthew Caldwell, Jack Boehmister, Travis Shaw, Mason Shipley, Cole Hudson, Lance St. Louis and Cole Brevard.
Any of those guys just kind of jump out to you. I know three are specialists, so their draft process does look a little bit different.
And Matthew Caldwell, I know, was a backup for most of the year, but any of those, we've seen backup career backup quarterbacks, fine places in the NFL before.
But any of those other guys, specialists or non-specialists kind of stand out to you.
Yeah, I guess I think of some of the more veteran names, even though they're up there in the age curve, but like somebody like Nicole Brevard that, you know, has good tape was a very steady presence at both of his stops on good, on a good defense this year with Texas.
And obviously, if he can show somebody that, hey, I've got the measurables to add to my maturity into the fact that I've played in a few systems that he's worth, you know, a undrafted free agent look.
You know, so it's, you also have to remember that it's a chance for those guys to really start to put those feathers in their cap as well, that it's not only about the draft.
And it's not just about having your name called, obviously, that's what all of these guys want.
And that's what I hope all of them get, but they also have a chance to really, you know, make a good impression on some NFL teams that are obviously looking for depth and looking to find diamonds in the rough in undrafted free agency.
So I definitely think about several of the guys you mentioned, like in like a cold Brevard there for sure.
Part of me wonders if Matthew Caldwell is going to be there to throw.
Or if those responsibilities maybe go to another longhorn as a preview for next year, but that's actually something I'm going to work to find out before we get out of here.
This was, you know, talking about a practice of sorts, a training of sorts.
There are a lot of games this past weekend for teams wearing burn orange to basketball teams advanced to the sweet 16 baseball not to top five road series win could have been a sweet probably should have been a sweep.
But, you know, you'll take two or three on the road in the SEC softball kept things moving.
It's been a really, you know, spring is a time when there's so many sports going on.
It's supposed to win football just dominates the fall and of course dominates our attention all year.
But the only other thing going on on campus during, you know, most of the fall is volleyball.
So it's football, it's volleyball.
And if you're a real sick code, you want to follow a pretty average to below average cross country team.
You go right ahead and do that.
But now there's so many different things going on for Texas in this time of year when the March madness tournament is happening when conference play is starting.
It really is a fun and packed time of year.
And it's also a time of year now where Texas is just showing why they're one of the best athletic departments in the entire country.
I think it's one of the things that's really unique about being a fan of a college team because you have moments like Saturday night continuing in this Sunday, where you can have this.
The entire fan experience really the highs and lows and the the dread, but then obviously the exhilaration and the euphoria that comes with coming out of that.
Multiple loops around the track.
And I think that was no, no more evident than on Saturday night, you know, came high.
Heidi hits that three pointer in the corner and obviously gives Texas the upset win against Gonzaga to send them to the sweet 16.
You know, you're, you're, you're, you've for it. I sent on our group text like this basketball team is the equivalent of finding $20 on the sidewalk.
Just how they've gone about this March madness run and it's just it's the definition of found money.
But then who I was with, they turned on the baseball game and I was almost like, oh, I don't really want to go there.
I check the score. We're kind of collapsing a little bit.
I don't want to feel like I now have a hole in my pocket when I just found $20.
And then you get that last all important out Thomas Burns throws a strike that they hit and Auburn hits into a ground ball.
And you mentioned it could have been a sweet for Texas, but it also could have easily been a series loss.
And they could have lost two out of three games. They probably weren't losing on Sunday with Dylan Blantis.
But it's just that roller coaster of emotions where when you have all these sports and these high pressure sports like March madness and SEC baseball all going on at once, you're
just objecting yourself to a lot of highs and lows of the emotion of the various emotions.
But thankfully on Saturday night, continuing in a Sunday with fix shapers team advancing, softball winning, longhorn baseball, getting that series win against Auburn on the road.
It was one of those weekends where man, it was a banner weekend and you could really feel your eyes of Texas arm lifted high in pride.
It's just how the longhorn athletics all around really just showed out over the weekend.
So pretty special, but you got to be reminded they won't always be. They won't all be like this.
There's going to be there's going to be weekends that are the exact opposite where it all goes wrong. There's going to be weekends where some of it goes right.
And then you're left feeling like, you know, there's tears in your beer at the same time.
But man, this is definitely one to remember and hopefully Sean Miller in the game can keep it rolling on Thursday and send this team to the elite eight, which would be quite improbable.
And I don't think I would have believed you if you told me that a couple weeks ago.
No, I didn't see a last fort in team going on this type of run speaking of baseball.
How many teams do you think are tied for first in the SEC right now?
I'm guessing it since you asked. It's a lot. So I will say eight.
It's seven. And they're all I think within the top 20 of D1 baseball rankings.
Right after that also in D1 baseball's rankings are all four and two.
And one other one of those four and two teams Oklahoma on their way to Austin for a top 10 matchup.
So the action keeps coming. The action is back on the football field this week, not only when it comes to pro day, but practices recruiting everything.
Of course, Texas in the sweet 16 and both the men's and women's tournament.
