Today on Lockdown Canadians this week the Montreal Canadians are celebrating the 8 year anniversary of the Nick Suzuki trade and we're going to give you a balanced look at this trade for both teams. Just kidding, let's go glow a little bit. Hello everyone and welcome into another episode of Lockdown Canadians.

1:14My name is Ian Blaubert, also known as at grow match to suar on the internet. And I'm joined as I always am by Laura Sabah, also known as the actor stick Laura on September 10th 2018. The Montreal Canadians create a finalized a trade in the early morning hours with the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas receives distressed Captain Max Patre ready from the Montreal Canadians and the Habs Aquire. Thomas Tatar, very good forward at the time. A second round pick in the 2019 draft and some guy named Nick Suzuki. He's a little bit more than some guy now isn't he Laura? He is the anchor of the Montreal Canadians. It's very telling that one of the only good things that Mark Berger van did in his player acquisition career happened by accident too. He was asking for a different player not Nick Suzuki. So how we ended up like this, I don't know, but I'm very very grateful for it.

2:18As you all know, if you've listened to even one episode of this podcast lately, Nick Suzuki is my current favorite NHL, he's my favorite Hab. I love him very much. Like the players that I've loved before him were the likes of Sapecoivo, right? Like this is that's the kind of genre of player that I like. And I think Nick Suzuki is truly an incredible player and an underrated player. And I think there was obviously Shay Weber as Captain in between. But if you contrast his captaincy, Nick Suzuki's captaincy with Max Petreides captaincy, it's night and day. Yeah, totally. Look, so we're going to keep diving into this trade. It's a feel good Friday for us here at Lockdown Canadians. It's very excited to be talking to you about that trade and really the success it set the Canadians up for. But it is also our mailbag day. We have lots of questions, lying combos. We're talking expansion fears, potential expansion sites in the future. We'll get into the mailbag later on. We're going to want to stick around. We have our winner of our YouTube subscriber contest.

3:18And this is that person's last chance to claim this before we open it up to our essay contest of which we are already getting entries and they are very good. And you'll have more information on that later in the show. It's also important to remember the context that this trade happened, didn't right? Petreides was very disgruntled at this point in his tenure with the Canadians. He had his own golf tournament just a few days, maybe like a week or so before this trade and all of the questions were about whether or not he was going to be a Montreal Canadian. And he answered them all in the way that you would expect a player to answer them when they want out. It was not a very, it was a dark time for the Canadians. Just whenever you're having these conversations about your captain, it's not a great look. See, Larkin Kamadilin for more information. But the Canadians, they are making this trade in the early morning hours the day of their

4:21own golf tournament, which is the unofficial opening of Canadians training camp of the season. We always expect something big out of this training camp. We don't necessarily expect a trade. But I think Mark Bergerman felt that that was going to be a ghost that loomed over this if he did not pull this trade off. If the day before they didn't make this trade, Max Petrady has to show up to this golf tournament and the entirety of the Montreal media is there. I think that would have been a disaster. Also, I think they pushed it out the door and he settled for a guy he didn't want in the Xazuki. We got lucky, but also, not to mention, if he had done the golf tournament, he had answered all those questions again, which he had previously done. And then a day or two later gets traded anyway. That's an even worse look. A thousand percent against way he wears. Let's be honest, Nick Xazuki's initial tenure, when he first was acquired and he's brought

5:22over, that season for Xazuki didn't go all that well in juniors and at the world juniors. I remember he didn't have a great world junior championship. They were kind of hoping he'd be a standout player. Mark Berger been allegedly spoke with him and was saying, you need to step up. You need to have a larger impact on your team, which then led to him going back to, I believe, the Guelph Storm and leading his OHL team to a memorial cup. So it was very much he took that upon himself and became better. The Canadian is during that point. The prospects didn't really get a ton of direction. So when the general manager of the team shows up to be like, you need to lock in. And that was before we were using the term lock in. But you need to lock in. It was obvious that he did and he took it to heart, right? He very much made that a pivotal point in his development. And now he is the first 100 point player to win the selky since Sergei Fedorov.

6:27He's just a phenomenal player that the person he's turned into, the player he's turned into. Getting goosebumps. It all goes back to this trade that doesn't happen if the Canadians are in a good place. Yes. It's born of a bad era of Canadians hockey. Yeah, I absolutely agree with you on that. And I think for me, the thing with Nick Suzuki is that he was there for, it was a rollercoaster, right? I think about when he first made the team. We weren't super impressed. I remember having a conversation with my friend across the pond, but it was not even a Habs fan. And after I don't know, maybe 5, 10 games, we were like, what's going on with Nick Suzuki, right? He's made the team, but we're not seeing the impact that he has. And then obviously COVID happened. And then the next year they go to the Stanley Cup final, and then you have the lowest lows the next year, right? So he went through a lot of transitional periods with the same team.

7:29And I think that that kind of really prepared him for a lot of things. And I think it's really telling that Shay Weber, who was considered one of the greatest leaders of the last few years, or this era of hockey, when he didn't retire, when he went on long-term injured reserve, never to be seen again. His advice to the Montreal Canadians was, Nick Suzuki should be the next captain. Yeah. And it's also, it's very important to know that like that era wasn't a complete waste because of how much the Shay Weber style of leadership has bled into what Nick Suzuki does. You know, people bring it up from time to time. Shay Weber in his career has made it a point to not have the equipment staff carry his gear, his bag to the bus or to the truck whenever they're on the road. And that he, the Canadians picked that up as a behavior of theirs.

8:32You know, that became something that Nick Suzuki has the Canadians do, right? The players carry their own equipment now. You know, the equipment staff have enough going on where they don't need to be carrying around equipment bags. They are far more valuable than that. The big strong hockey players can carry their own stuff. I think that that's a huge part of what makes Nick Suzuki one of the strongest captains of the Canadians in my lifetime. Like, it's really, it's, you can look back to Shay Weber as being a strong influence on that. You can look back to Kerry Price being a strong influence on that. So he was a little bit different. But Kerry Price demanded excellence quietly. I think that was the thing with with with with was very price. He demonstrated excellence. And I think like what would I would I notice again, I don't want to keep rubbing the rebuild in your face. But this this season, at least for the first few episodes, we're seeing a lot more of

9:35Mike's up Nick Suzuki, which is not to say we we never saw it before. But I think like this this year, they've kind of made it a point to feature it. And he's just he's so quiet, but he's so commanding. Like when he'll say something like guys we got to dig in or whatever, like it's just, it's he's not overexcited. He's not excitable. He's not rude. He's just very firm. And one revelation that came out was last year we talked a lot about how they skated together all summer. I believe that was Nick Suzuki's idea. Interesting. Yeah, that's what it seemed like from the first episode. Huh. Yeah. That's, hey, you want to do a quick Nick Suzuki trivia before we move on to our. Nick Suzuki trivia. So Nick Suzuki scored his first NHL goal against the Minnesota wild on October 17th, 2019. Another Montreal Canadian also scored their first goal. And it was quite momentous in this game. Do you know who it was? Another Montreal Canadian scored their first NHL goal in that game.

10:37I believe so. I'm doing some, some, some tracking here, but I believe this is the case. Oh, wow. I couldn't tell you. I believe Victor Mette scored his first NHL goal in that game. Of course, Victor Mette never scored. It was sort of a whole deal with him. He went like an entire season without scoring. Despite being an offensively minded defenseman, that was a big, a big laugh for a while in Montreal, Victor Mette. But look, the Nick Suzuki trade an overwhelming victory for the Montreal Canadians. Like there wasn't a lot of those, a lot of the trades in the bourgeoisie era were like, eh, you could see it from both sides. This one, the Canadians, unequivically want it. And we get to keep Nick Suzuki around in a Montreal Canadian's uniform, hopefully for life. That's, that's the goal. All right, we'll leave that there. When we come back, we turn to you. 13:50We're in we're building lineups. We're going nah, that's not going to work. This will work. This comes to us from Spencer Jameson line combo hot takes for the season. What are your thoughts on to meet off on the first line or doc on the first line. Anderson on the second line, taxi A on the second line back on the third line. If he makes the roster to know is the to see. I do think in reality, competitors placeholder until he just ready Hudson and dobson is regular partners. If Brian Bocker stays in the valve, thanks for everything. Thank you Spencer. So Laura, do you have any any line combo hot takes like is there is there a weird out there pick that you're banging the table for? We need to see this. I don't think it's so weird, but I do think it would be interesting to try to meet off on the first line. In that scenario in my mind, I know it makes more sense to move. Slap down, but I'm moving cold hot field down. I thought that too. Like because I feel like. If you wanted to. I'm of two minds of it taking that path first.

14:53If you wanted to and if doc works out in a point where you could play him as the second line center, that's a massive if right now, but just play in the space. It's September, who knows what we end up? Doc can kind of do some of the things that Slavkovsky can along the boards and getting the puck off the wall, right? And being a big physical presence and being a jerk around the front of the net. Like that I kind of get what I what I kind of want to see though. Is somebody with the raw creativity and vision and hands and passing ability and stick handling ability, being able to feed the puck to coca-coffee? He might score 70. Like I don't I that to me is like really a fascinating concept. But that top line then becomes pretty unbalanced like it's not. You lose all of this stuff that Slav does. I think people still have this idea about Slav not necessarily in Montreal, but elsewhere that he's a passenger on that line. And he just he's benefiting from the play of those around him.

15:55When he's not there, that line isn't the same. So I really I'm curious to see if we do get a look at some point. It's 84 games this year. It's a lot of games. We're going to I imagine we'll see some stuff that we maybe don't anticipate right now. But if the kids come out of the gate really really well, like I feel like Marty should just start shaking things up just for shiggles. Yeah, I if that's fine. Yeah, and you know knock on wood, but injuries happening injuries happen right. These guys aren't are if if you are have a short term injury of a couple games. It's a great opportunity to try one of these things out. You know, so I'm very very interested in seeing what happens there. All right. Let's let's move on to another question here. Let's do one from our buddy, Jack, I face punch. He's got a couple questions here. With Caden, Gouli potentially not being ready for the start of the season. Do you think that puts any pressure on the haves to get Jack, I's contract on sooner could Gouli situation give Arbor a little more leverage.

17:01So for those who might not be aware, a report surface that Caden, Gouli did in fact have surgery over the summer. And that he's in rehab. He is skating. So there was there was also news that he's skating. So hopefully not that far away from potentially playing games. If if there's a delay at all. We'll find out more at the golf tournament. I imagine they'll they'll probably go one of the first questions will be is everyone healthy and they'll go yes or no. And they'll tell us what they find to be they'll be cagey about the ones that are they'll be cagey about the ones that aren't ready to go. Thousand percent. Yeah. Does that to get to the question here. Does that put pressure on the Canadians to sign Arbor Jack, I sooner or is there enough internal competition where they go, you know what we'll ride it out and see what happens. I think the second thing. I really do. I feel like at this point where September 10th and there is no contract. There's some sort of stalemate. I do believe it has to do with his ice time. And so, you know, at some point, I think perhaps are just hoping that he'll cave.

18:04Yeah, I think that's I think that's about right. I think Arbor Jack, I want some kind of assurances that he'll have a role on this team. And I don't think the Canadians are in any position to be providing those assurances. That's that's what this is. And it's probably similar conversation with both of them. To be fair though, like the Canadians are also in that same position with Strugel and Rhinebacher. Like that's really important. Like the only guarantees for me are your top four. Like even Alex Carrier, like I do think that he's a regular lineup, but like a sorry regular in the lineup. But what his role is could change a lot from what it was last year. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. No, you're good. Couple couple more here from from Jack I face bunch. They are Arbor and Florian Jack I themed essentially. There's been some talk about potentially moving Arbor Jack out of forward. There's some commentators talking about the idea of them playing of Arbor and Florian playing together. Is there actually a realistic path to Arbor playing forward? Arbor Jack, a face Jack I face bunch goes through all the line combinations and sort of just does the numbers game aspect of this and.

19:05It's kind of difficult to believe that it's possible. What say you like is it is there a realistic, realistic path to him playing forward or were the Canadians rather happen as a defense. I think it has to be the same time like the same thing that happened when you played forward last time like it has to be a desperation situation. This man is a defenseman. They just want him to be the kind of defenseman they're looking for that's that's the path. Yeah, I also think Arbor Jack, I don't like playing forward. I think he'd rather be the defenseman. It's what he's played his whole his whole life. That's what he meant to be. Yeah, I think he'd much rather be doing that. Real quick one fun one right before we get to the break here. This is from Dion sir. Hi, Loranian. I've been meeting to ask this question for a while and it's a great one. What are your favorite types of candy Laura you start. Oh, I love this question. Okay, the newest one is you know the nerd clusters. It's like, yeah, that's my that's my current candy fixation.

20:07I'm not so much a sugar person. I'm much more like a salty snack kind of person, but that is like way top of my list. I do like a good gummy bear like a really good one like the Haribo European ones. Sure. And I am Middle Eastern. So again, like I've been doing a lot of tomato takes lately. Don't throw tomatoes at me. I really like like there's this like filled licorice. It's black licorice, but it's filled with like you know what I mean like if you're Middle Eastern, you know, it's like the the brand is people go wrong. And I love those two and I know it's black licorice. I know everybody hates that I know it's growth, but like I like the ones with it like it's filled with like either pink or yellow cream. Whatever it is, I don't I don't know. Yeah, those are my favorite candies other than that. Like I'm just like chocolate all the way or like chips. Yeah, I you can ask my dentist. I'm a big candy guy. I've always been a big Reese's guy Reese's Cubs Reese's pieces all that noise. Laura, I know you are as well. We we we often commiserate on the wild pack. Packages shapes and forms. Reese's is throwing things out into the world. They're just doing anything.

21:10They they've become the Oreo of the candy world. It's just like you peanut butter and jelly in there. You bet like it's kind of crazy. They just they're doing they they've also gotten to the point where like serial scientists are at where like those people should be tried in front of like criminal court for what they're doing to cereal. I think it's crazy. And I think we need to put a stop to it. But I love those Canadian candy wise. Like whenever I'm up there, it's the coffee criss like I feel don't don't tell don't tell border patrol, but I fill my car and drive home as well as many other sweets that I that I can only get in Canada. But if I had to pick one, it's probably a Reese's cup, just a classic classic Reese's cup. Thanks for asking that's that's we love we love fun nonsense questions like that allows us to. It's a good cleanse before we head into our final segment where we're going to talk about expansion again, both the Canadian strategy surrounding expansion of potential cities that could find themselves with new NHL teams and we'll get into that in just a minute here on locked on can.

I think is what we're going to call it. We're going to say some stuff that's immediately out of date. I cannot wait. It should be a blast. Let's move on here to let's let's let's do Danny. You want to do Danny's email or question this was a fun. It's sort of first day back at school. You teach your ask you what you guys get up to this summer. Danny says how is your summer. But what did you get up to Laura? My parents visited for a long time. A couple of road trips. I started the summer with trying to figure out how I was going to get a whole lot of stuff done with the downtime that we had going down to three days. And a little bit of a whole that is September and I still haven't done any of that stuff because my parents were here and I was very busy.

24:23Just, you know, seeing family, seeing friends, celebrating my birthday. Lots of stuff around that. And then, yeah, that's pretty much it and short road trips around like this area. Yeah, I had a pretty low key summer. My one trip was I drove down to our flew down to Florida to see my sister who was doing her internship in Disney World spent a few days there, including my birthday. And then we drove back up the East Coast. So it's a 20 some odd hour drive we did over the course of two days. That was the big summer trip. So I did see one Canadians fan in Disney who saw me wearing my Canadian shirt and gave me a thumbs up. I did get harassed by a least fan. I saw that there was a yes, there was a family of sabers fans are Buffalo fans. They were wearing Buffalo bills matching Disney family vacation t-shirts and they pointed at me they go Habs fan. I just gave them the finger guns and walked away. So it was pretty funny. Yeah, it's it's always you always got to walk around with the CH on you somewhere. You'll have some fun interaction with somebody. All right, let's go to Andrew here for the mailbag. Do you feel the Habs management is delaying certain signings and big trades due to the potential upcoming expansion draft.

25:31For example, not rushing Hage so that when he gets here, he's not eligible to be taken an expansion. I think Hage is not here because Hage don't want to be here. I think that's what it is. And I'm saying doesn't want to be about your opinion. I think he wants to be a Michigan Wolverine for one more year. And you know, round out his game. I'm very impressed by just how mature he is in taking that that decision. Like he's not making a killing in NIL money over there. But I also think like the general scheme of this question is probably not because we don't know when it's going to happen. It could be three years from now. You can't put your life on pause for three years. That's three opportunities to win a Stanley Cup. Yes, and everyone's going to lose somebody. Maybe two somebody's. You know, depending on how many teams they bring in all at once. So like you can't you can't sweat this too much. I know it's going to stink, especially I'm thinking of the goal of the situation. You look behind me. You see a lot of Yacob Doberge. I'm starting to get a little nervous about what that looks like. But that is what it is. Let's go to Paul Brasho, who asks, which major market in North America that has not previously had a post 1967 expansion team.

26:39So no Atlanta Cleveland Hartford Kansas City Oakland Quebec City and the entire state of Arizona. Although I'll take Umbert with that. That was not an expansion team. Those were the Winnipeg jets. Do you feel should be awarded a team? My pick would be this would be Cincinnati because the WHH Stinger's logo remains one of my all-time favorites. Do you have any like leading ideas here of a city that you're like, yeah, I'd like to see an expansion team. Honestly, like I thought about it and I was like every everything that I that I thought of already had a team at some point, right. So I think for me, I would like to explore the idea of something like like literally in the middle of the South, like like deep South. Just because I think you'd be very interesting. I don't know if there are any markets that can sustain that other than, you know, the Texas ones that are being explored right now. Right. That's true. I think it would be boss. It would be cool of Boston had an NHL team. That would be a lot of fun. All right. Let's do Jeff the red here.

27:41Who are your pre training camp picks? Could unexpectedly earn a spot on the opening day roster with a strong performance. I really like Adam Angstrom's chances, especially if Gulli's not around. That might be a fun guy who we're looking at in camp and going, he could start the season in the NHL. What about you? He's my guy. Yeah, he's my pick for making the team out of training camp when everybody was expecting someone else. Yeah, I think like with with Florian, I think there's some belief that maybe we're expecting him to make a spot. I think he's slightly less expected than Adam Angstrom. So we'll see if that if that works out. Last one here from Jeff the red. If the Habs ever changed their logo, heaven forbid. What's it done? What's a design you would like to see? I would like it to incorporate the maple leaf and listen. I know the Toronto Maple Leafs already have. Don't click off the video. But like the Winnipeg Jets logo has a version of the maple leaf, right? So I want something like that for here. I don't know if it's just like current sentiment or whatever.

28:48I just feel like or or something incorporating the flirty would be good to. Yeah, I was going to say the flirty thing. I think that's a that's a fun one. Although I wonder if people go. The Quebec, the Quebec Nordic had that. Whatever I think I think utilizing really any of the old logos. Like I think that you know the original blue Canadians Jersey, they were in like the early 1900s. Like that the sea on that low on that chest is really cool. Like incorporate that somewhere. You know the CA on that sort of darker red that they wore during the Centennial season. That one's pretty cool. So like there's I already mentioned a few days ago. The the world champions logo like the globe that was in the Canadians colors and like the sort of 1920s look to it. I love that logo. You know if they if and when they win a championship. I want that logo to be plaster on every piece of merch that they have. That would be that would be tight. All right. We have some business to take care of. We have a giveaway to do.
