Hilton, for this day.
1:13
Day two of LSU Spring Football, and we've got practice for it locked in LSU.
1:19
You are locked on LSU, your daily podcast on the LSU Tigers.
1:29
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
1:35
Okay, let's get it, it is locked on LSU, your team every day.
1:38
I'm your host, Matt Muscona.
1:40
Thanks so much for making us your first listen.
1:42
Lane Kippen put his Tigers through a second workout in spring practice.
1:46
Media again was allowed five periods of the individual drill.
1:51
So we were there again for about between 25 and 30 minutes.
1:54
Just a little less than 30 minutes out on the Ponderosa.
1:58
The periods that we got to watch were outside.
2:01
If you missed our first practice report from Tuesday,
2:04
the first thing we saw when the team comes out is a hurry up.
2:07
No huddle 11 on 11, ones on ones, twos on twos on separate fields.
2:12
So they're happening simultaneously on fields that are parallel
2:15
to one another and then they went into the individual periods.
2:19
So one thing I missed after the first practice because of where we were position
2:24
that I was able to see on day two was the first team offense.
2:28
If you missed our first report,
2:30
where they had the media position was on the West sideline.
2:33
And the first team was run, so the second team was on the field where we were.
2:39
And on the field opposite that parallel is where the ones were and we were blocked
2:45
Today on Thursday for day two,
2:47
they allowed us to stay on that West sideline or the North end zone.
2:50
So I was able to go in the North end zone and see the field with the ones.
2:54
And I'll go to the first offense in a second,
2:56
but I thought a greater significance actually was the first team defense
3:02
as that was running through.
3:04
Here was your starting defensive line.
3:06
Now again, this is day, I want to pump the brakes and make sure you understand.
3:10
Day two of spring practice.
3:13
Long way to go, they don't even have pads on.
3:16
And in a lot of times spring is used as an opportunity just to get looks at guys
3:23
in different positions.
3:24
So you have sort of your pole position when you get to fall camp.
3:27
That's what these 15 practices are.
3:29
Let's see how everybody looks, try a bunch of different stuff,
3:32
get acclimated to a new system.
3:34
So when you hit fall camp, boom, you know who you're starting with.
3:38
And then you level you evolve throughout those those those battles for starting jobs.
3:43
Well, your defensive line.
3:45
I've left defensive end was Jordan Ross.
3:47
The transfer from Tennessee at right defensive end was Prince Will,
3:50
Umand Mielin, the number one transfer defensive end in the portal.
3:54
Of course, Jordan Ross is the former five star.
3:57
What was interesting, the most interesting part was your two interior defensive
4:02
line and running with the ones who's too early and rollly true freshman.
4:08
Doose Gerald's and Richard Anderson were running at first team defensive tackle.
4:12
Now again, this was the hurry up no huddle period.
4:15
We didn't get to watch team periods later in practice.
4:18
That could change, but it is notable that day two,
4:23
you have two true freshman early and rollies running with the ones when you have guys
4:28
still like dominant McKinley and Malik blocked and transferring in from Auburn.
4:33
Those were the second team of defensive line.
4:36
We're blocked in and Dom McKinley on the inside and your edges were Gabriel
4:42
for it again, Gabriel efforts coming off an injury and Dylan Carpenter.
4:46
That was your second team defensive line.
4:47
So the rest of the first team defense get that was your starting defensive line.
4:53
Your linebackers were TJ daughtery and Devon keys.
4:56
It's important to note that with weeks still is out there, but not participating.
5:03
So daughtery keys where you're starting linebackers.
5:06
Your corner backs were DJ picket and PJ Woodland that should come as no surprise
5:11
and your safeties were tie benefit and to Marcus Cooley.
5:15
The star position was was with spears.
5:21
So spears is a guy that we've talked about a good bit this off season who's played
5:27
safety his first two years at LSU but is really a prototypical for that star position.
5:32
A guy who's big and physical enough to play near the line of scrimmage but also an athletic
5:38
defensive back who can cover.
5:40
That's what you've sort of lacked the last two years where major burns was the physical
5:45
at the line sort of safety, really a liability and coverage.
5:48
Harold Perkins very good in space but maybe wasn't great turning and running in coverage.
5:53
Now you have a guy that you hope is the perfect blend of that.
5:55
So the Sean Spears was running as your first team safety.
5:58
On the offensive side of the ball the offensive line you're for and this is what I'm most
6:05
interested in the one sort of thing that's regrettable about the way they have this set up is where
6:10
when they go to individual the offensive line group goes to to the far corner field.
6:16
So we literally can't see anything the offensive line is doing when they go to individual and
6:21
that's a position group that I think we all have great interest in because of how poor they
6:25
were a year ago the turnover that you have there this year.
6:29
So but your first team offensive line left to right.
6:34
Jordan Seaton no surprise the Colorado transfer was your left tackle.
6:38
Devon Harper was your left guard.
6:40
Remember Devon Harper from Calvary Baptist in Louisiana was an LSU commit flip to Ole Miss
6:46
red shirt of this year.
6:47
The Ole Miss median I don't cover Ole Miss but the folks that do
6:51
were of the belief that Harper was going to be the starting right tackle.
6:55
This season at Ole Missley transfers to LSU when he was the first left guard out there.
7:00
No surprise Braille and Moore first team center.
7:03
Alouba was the starter the first team right guard again that should come as no surprise.
7:08
Remember ba top 100 prospects signed with Georgia red shirted transfer to Maryland last two
7:15
years starter at Maryland every game for two seasons there in the big 10 at right guard.
7:20
So no surprise ba at right guard and then Western Davis at right tackle now.
7:23
Do you want to throw out a caveat here because I also charted 79
7:30
wrapping in at right tackle.
7:32
There is no 79 on the roster and there's a couple of these instances another one I'm
7:36
going to tell you about in just a second.
7:38
Remember on on Tuesday
7:42
bow border lawn was playing right tackle.
7:44
Well bow border lawn we know was 67 years ago there's no 67 on this roster.
7:48
So it could very well be they just need to update the roster for us but
7:53
but Weston Davis was at right tackle as well during the ones.
7:58
Landon Clark was the first team quarterback not who saw in Longstreet.
8:02
So it's two days in a row now where Landon Clark has run with the first team at quarterback
8:07
in the absence of of of Sam Levit who's doing individual drills and throwing but not running
8:14
and doing all the team stuff.
8:16
Threda's green was your first team tied in.
8:17
Kaden Durham was your first team running back in your receivers.
8:20
Or Jace Brown Jackson Harris and Winnie Watkins.
8:25
That's the other one.
8:26
Winnie Watkins on the roster is listed as number eight.
8:33
But he was wearing number six at practice which is is odd because you have who's on Longstreet
8:39
wearing six also TJ daughtery wears number six.
8:42
So you can't have three number sixes.
8:44
Remember you can't have a player on with the same jersey number on the field at the same time.
8:48
So if who's on Longstreet is wearing six then Winnie Watkins can't wear six.
8:51
So on the roster he's eight but at practice we believe that's Watkins wearing six.
8:55
We haven't gotten that answer finally.
8:58
But is interesting to see those guys out there and how that all sort of transpired with the first
9:03
team running around a little bit.
9:08
I have some other observations I don't want to get to.
9:10
The for whatever it's worth your second team defense we shared with you.
9:15
Share with you defensive line.
9:16
Your cornerbacks were Michael Turner and Jakeem Jackson.
9:20
Your linebackers were Zach Weeks and Tylan Singleton and then your safeties were Fahim Delane
9:30
So that was your second team defense as well.
9:34
There's a few other observations I have.
9:36
So that's just important as a sort of starting note.
9:39
A few other observations I have from practice that I want to get to.
9:42
Let me knock out our first break and we'll come back here and I'll give you my other
9:45
practice observations from our 30 minutes or so.

12:57
I want to empty the notebook here from day two of spring we ran through the ones and the
13:05
twos again as LSU is out there and in just helmets so no shoulder pads no no girdles just helmets
13:11
jerseys shorts is is what they're out there running around in right now a few things that I thought
13:17
were interesting notably of course the the freshman defensive lineman like we talked about
13:23
also to file in green the transfer from Clemson absent for a second consecutive day as was Damien
13:29
Shanklin the edge so two straight days we haven't seen those guys out there it's also notable
13:34
that remember when LSU hired this staff remember a year ago Kevin Peoples was the edge
13:40
where he came here as the edge coach and you know Kyle Williams decided not to continue his
13:47
coaching career and they hired Sterling Lucas and so the thought was Lucas would coach the
13:53
interior line well on the roster the official coaching roster Sterling Lucas is listed as the
13:59
defensive line coach and Kevin Peoples is now listed as the interior defensive line coach and
14:05
that is reflected in what we see Kevin Peoples is out there at practice working with the defensive
14:10
tackles whereas Lucas is working with the edge rushers now of course when they come together and
14:15
team periods there were but an individual it's peoples with the tackles and it's Sterling Lucas
14:21
with the edge rushers at practice a couple of other things that I that I thought were notable
14:28
Ty Benefield just looks incredible like looks the part they have he's the safety transfer
14:35
from Boise State he's looked at six three two oh wait he is long and he is filled out they were
14:42
running interception drills where the safety was at the line of scrimmage and this sort of had to
14:47
they had a back pedal run and leap and grab an interception again against air but physically you can
14:53
just see that this is a different this is a due with different skill with a different physical skill
14:59
set as we noted Richard Anderson looks looks great running with the ones in the in the team period
15:05
but in the individual drills it's hard not to notice Dom McKinley Dom McKinley is of course a former
15:10
five star from Akadiana that was third season in Baton Rouge six six two ninety seven is where
15:16
they have him listed so under 300 pounds he looks awesome and sometimes like this will make sense
15:22
just on a human level think about what your body was like at 18 compared to 21 right those sometimes
15:30
those three two three years of physical development just as your body is physically maturing and then
15:36
also in a college strength conditioning program you can see the transformation with Dom McKinley
15:42
you're starting to look like a giant man now instead of a a young player oversized in his body so
15:48
I thought that was impressive um I also noticed the way Blake Baker and Chris Kiffin are bouncing
15:55
around so um Baker was on Tuesday working with the star linebackers and some guys like Dylan
16:07
should be Keel and Moses Zach Weeks Devon Keys well on Wednesday or excuse me Thursday you
16:16
saw the Sean Spears Aiden Hall CJ Jim Coley those are sort of your your star linebacker positions
16:23
that were out there while you know the period that I was watching with Chris Kiffin he was out
16:29
there with Devon Keys Zach Weeks um uh the O'Grace who the O'Grace was working with
16:36
Blake Baker on on Tuesday that we told you about um there was a Keel and Moses bounce back and forth
16:44
between the two on on Thursday as well so that that was interesting also uh Traylon James
16:51
who's a defensive back transfer from southern he was working with the safeties he played both
16:55
corner and safety at southern that's probably a depth piece that maybe you're looking forward to
17:00
in the future how he may develop into that role but um but one to file away there with Traylon James
17:07
in that period I spent more time watching the the defensive backs on Thursday whereas I watched
17:12
the quarterbacks and receivers on Tuesday so if you want that report you can catch that from Tuesday's
17:17
episode the next availability that we're going to have is going to be on Saturday where we're going
17:21
to get a full 30 minutes no video or camera opportunities just the opportunity to come watch
17:26
which tells me they're probably going to let us see a little bit more uh if they make us turn
17:31
the cameras off the means we're probably going to get to see more that they don't want recorded right
17:36
so um we'll look forward to having that report for you here on Lockdown LSU sometimes Saturday late
