New Poll: Lula and Bolsonaro in Dead Heat for Brazilian Presidency
A recent poll by AtlasIntel and Bloomberg shows Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Senator Flavio Bolsonaro in a tight race for a potential presidential run-off. Flavio leads by a narrow margin of 1%, with Lula at 46.6% and Flavio at 47.6%. Both candidates are within the margin of error.
In simulated first-round matchups, Lula maintains a steady lead with around 46% of the votes, while Flavios support has improved, now ranging from 36% to 42%. This marks a significant increase for Flavio since Februarys poll, where he received between 33% and 40% of the votes.
Lula, currently 80 years old, aims for a fourth nonconsecutive term and previously defeated Flavios father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, in 2022. Brazils electoral system requires a run-off between the top two candidates if no one receives more than 50% of the votes, a scenario that has occurred in every election since 2002.
The poll, conducted between March 18th and 23rd, surveyed 5,028 people with a 1% margin of error. These results indicate a close race on the right, with markets remaining volatile due to Jair Bolsonaros endorsement of his son in December, which caused the currency and stocks to drop.
