Few things are as uplifting as the greatest moments in sports.
And nothing brings us together quite like Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games.
From NBC Universal's iconic storytelling to the innovative technology across
Exfinity and Peacock, Comcast brings the Olympic Games home to America,
sharing every moment with millions.
When Team USA steps onto the world stage, we're not just watching.
We're cheering together.
This winter, we're all on the same team. Comcast, proud partner of Team USA.
Team building, why is it important we'll answer that question here today on Lockdown Jaguar.
You are Lockdown Jaguar, your daily Jacksonville Jaguar's podcast.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
What up Jaguar fans, I'm Tony Wiggins, the host of Lockdown Jaguars.
Let me tell you where we're headed today with the show.
At the end of the show, I'm going to ask the question, would you do this?
You have to stick around to find out what that is.
Matching positional impact and skiing, that's a tricky part of it.
But we're going to start the show talking about Team Building, the most important parts.
One of the things that we have to do is establish who are the cornerstones of this team.
Do you have the right foundation?
I'll go through about seven people.
I'm going to call them the Lucky Seven or the Magnificent Seven.
How about that? Magnificent Seven for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
There's cornerstones, so many times we've discussed when you watch your team practice,
when they used to have joint practices, and they still do sometimes.
But they've had joint practices before, and I've seen the Jaguars for a couple of weeks.
And I'm like, hey, they look pretty good.
And the other team comes around the corner, and it's like, oh, oh.
So yeah, about that.
They don't look as good now because I saw these dudes on the other team.
And usually it's about their first seven or eight players, or if they got 10 or 12 guys,
and you only got two.
So we're going to take a look at the foundation to see if they have enough people.
But mainly, it's also draft season.
So what we're trying to do is marry up what they need, what they have,
with what they're going to get.
So we're going to make sure we touch that in the middle of the show.
But right now, let's get to the cornerstones of this team.
The cornerstones of this team are, of course, quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
We know that, right?
He's been here for a minute.
After one year with Liam Cohen, he's the top five candidate for the MVP and a 13 game winner.
If you don't believe that everything other than the presence of good players matter,
you're absolutely wrong because most of the impact last year that this team
made on the football field was made by guys that were not here.
Except for Jacobi Myers, who made a tremendous difference.
But by the time they traded for Jacobi Myers, they had already matched.
May have exceeded it, but I know for a fact they matched because at one point,
they were four and one and ever before the trade deadline.
They had matched their win total from the year before.
Primarily, at that point, they still had Jordan Lewis.
They still had Travis Hunter, but Travis Hunter never played with Jacobi Myers.
The thing is, right around that time, when they lost Trayvon initially with his hand injury in San Francisco,
they lost Travis, Jordan Lewis at some point.
They were really, really, really back to being the same team that they were.
And they won a bunch of games.
To go from four and 13 to 13 and four with almost the same cast of characters
shows you that it's more than just having bodies and having people on the field.
So Trevor Lawrence is number one when it comes to that.
And I'm going to name a bunch of people and you're going to see exactly what I'm talking about.
They're going to be a whole bunch of incumbents.
I'm going to go right now to both Ed Russus, Trayvon Walker, as well as Josh Allen, cornerstones.
Guys that are a part of your team that you're going to lead with, right?
That are going to go out.
I'm going to put Jacobi Myers back in there again, because he made such a big impact on his team.
You'd be a fool to think that it's not going to improve even further with him being in training camp,
being in an offseason program and getting more used to it, more acclimated to the guys that are on this football team.
For the Oliwaka, how do you not include for your Saturday, Oliwaka, right?
As a part of what we're talking about here, the quarterback on the defense,
since he's been in the league, I think he's number one in tackles for linebackers.
And he's not number one.
He's very, very close to the top.
So that's five.
Obviously Travis Hunter.
And I'm going to have a bonus show you later on that I'll tell you about what we should expect from Travis Hunter.
Later on.
And you know what?
I'm going to go with Brian Thomas Jr.
So those are the seven guys, even though Brian Thomas Jr. had a little bit of an off year last year.
These are the seven guys we're going to lead with.
If you tell me the name, the best players on this team is dudes that are going to represent you from an athletic standpoint,
from a leadership standpoint, I'm on a name Trevor.
I mean, Trevor, yeah, Travis, Trayvon, Josh, Jacobi, Foy, and Brian Thomas Jr.
Now, I know there's some very important players that I'll leave out of that.
I can't name everybody.
That's why this stuff isn't easy.
I can't name everybody.
But those are the people that we're going to lead with.
And one thing when you try to marry up team building to expectations to what are they going to do,
it has to first look about, you have to first look at what do they have.
So one thing we didn't know last year when the new regime took over with the exception of Tony, Tony Bacelli,
who had been here in a radio capacity in a, he worked for the team, the broadcasting with broadcasts.
And being a Hall of Famer and being in the building, I'm sure there was some consultation going on way before he was named executive vice president of the team,
which by the way is one of the good moves of shotgun.
But what we have here is outside of him, there was no one else who had a beat on the people that were here other than having their own evaluation of them.
Like when they were evaluating them like James and last on as well as Liam Cohen, when they were evaluating those players.
As potential draft choices.
They had to come in here and identify him.
We didn't know how they felt about those guys.
And we also did not know and know how they felt about where they needed to go.
So what I'm basically saying is, you have an idea, you get a job.
Your first time GM, first time head coach, first time EVP, there's conversations about what you want to look like, how you want to play, what you want to lead with.
You have to have those conversations.
The ones that we did not know.
The only thing we can do is kind of attach their last stops to what they were actually trying, what we thought that they were trying to accomplish.
But even with that, they kept telling us, yeah, but we're going to make it our own.
We're going to make it our own and I was all for it.
So now that you see it, how much of that is, yeah, we're making it our own, but we can't really do it all in one season.
How much of it is that?
How much of it is, okay, we're going to evolve because I've heard that word at the end of the year.
We got to keep it evolving.
So evolve doesn't mean, okay, we see what we are now.
We got to change.
Evolved means we're going to continue heading in a direction that we're already heading in.
The one that none of us really knew about and try to win games along the way.
Where are they in that?
You have to know what, how they assess the team, where they want to go and what they want to be.
Now, how do you get from that point to this point?
You got it.
Now, it's about team building because it's not just about putting people on the field.
And the reason why I say that is because I saw Patrick, my home's healthy.
A healthy Patrick, my home's getting blown out in the Super Bowl twice.
When you play good on good, your weaknesses will show up.
They may not show up like I just said the Super Bowl.
So that means Kansas City got to the Super Bowl two times when they got blown out.
One by Philly and they were blown out by Philly and Tampa.
So my thing is is to get there, you had to be good.
Why did they get blown out?
Because when you get to a situation like that where it's good on good, all of your weak spots will catch up with you.
Do the Jaguars have weak spots?
I just talked about the strengths.
The first thing you can do when you're matching up positional impact and scheme.
You can either add to the top the way they did last year with Travis Hunter.
Or you can realize you have guys at the top.
And now we have to fill the roster and get glue guys because your top heavy.
And you don't have enough competition in the middle.
Let's talk about matching positional impact with scheme based on what you think the team will lead with.
I know that's a lot of verbiage, but we'll get to that.
And I'll explain just a second here a lot on Jaguars.

I just keep on trucking here locked on Jaguar. It is your team every day. Always glad to have you along with me.
I'm talking about team building and now we're going to talk about matching positional impact with scheme. So when the Jaguar is allowed.
Deviloy and Travis ETN to walk out of the door. The first thing that a lot of folks that have interacted with me and I appreciate each and every one of those interactions is.
We're still paying for the fact that Trent bulky.
So I think that's the reason why I left us in this cap situation.
And while the cap situation isn't ideal for a new regime to have to make tough decisions.
It's one of the reasons why I say that when you are taking over a team.
I would love to take over a team that's not tied to bad contracts.
The cover is absolutely bare. The demo has already been done.
In my opinion when Trent took this team over as the full time GM after Dave caught well was let go in 2021.
Along with urban Meyer and head coach. I hate to even bring that up. But it's part of history. So you you can't erase it.
that that cupboard was absolutely bare because the year before they had really purged this team the cupboard was bare
they were more bare because they came in here and got rid of CJ Henderson who had been a top 10 pick
they never really seemed to like Caleb on very much and to be quite honest none of us actually did
and I think that workout video in the fact that he didn't really do a whole bunch while he was here
now he's a pretty good player right but the thing is is I would love a bare cover because the
demo is already done sometimes you come in and you got a demo sometimes you come in and you're
building a demo at the same time you just remodel and then the other side of the house while they're
tearing up that side of the house you're kind of doing them both and I think that's what the Jaguar
did last year but they also were correcting an assessment that when looking at this roster
they had some things that they had to deal with but they also needed certain things to happen so
if you take over this team last year you realize that Trevor Lawrence is super super talented
do you have to uncoach him out of a bunch of bad habits that would have benefited a bad coach and
do you have to get a psyche right and I think they did to a certain extent mechanically
just giving him a different outlook and modern day football things that he had probably never even
done before right you think you have Brian Thomas Jr is number one wide receiver and but you know you
don't rest on your lulls because you come from places that have three wide receivers three sometimes
four wide receivers so you go out and add Travis Hunter you're you're evaluating Parker Washington
at the time and you add down your brown it didn't work so we have to mention that too you like
your tight ends with Britain Strange so you go get three different dudes that come in and two of them
already know the offense that you're going to run so that makes onboarding everybody easier
and then you add a bunch of offensive linemen not not any none of them are great but they're all
pretty decent right to give you more than what you have which is a poor offensive line but maybe on
defense you add Jordan Lewis and then you're going to sprinkle in some some Travis Hunter and of
course you add Eric Murray who didn't cost a whole bunch of money so it was like okay these are
guys that we like these are guys that we would like regardless where we were coaching but we're
going to bring them along and we're going to see what we got it lying back and we're going to see
what we got it running back behind Travis ETN you had nothing so you had to go out and get people
for that too mind you not just filling in squares but getting players that can really really help
this football team and y'all know what happened they went 13 and 4 they went 13 and 4 they played so
well that they didn't go out and do a whole bunch of free agency and I know the the prevailing
thought is is because of the salary cap that's not why they didn't do anything in free agency trust me
if they didn't like their team there's things that they could have done from a restructure standpoint
to go out free agency and be active but I think they were not active because they actually like their
team and it's always more expensive for you to go out and grab somebody else's proven players
than it is to trust yourself and that's the point where I want to get to they trust themselves
they are not in the business of well we hope this works of course they hope it works everybody
hopes it works when they go get players they hope they work when they sign down you proud and it
but you know what you press on and you move forward and that not working didn't hinder them from
being 13 and 4 did it no it did not by and time is junior being in slump didn't stop them from
being 13 and 4 Travis Hunter getting hurt halfway through the season or one-third through the season
and Jordan Lewis missing half of the season and Trevon missing a good chunk of the season even
though he was out there he wasn't a hundred percent it did not stop them from getting 13 and 4
they got to 13 and 4 because you lead with team and not just with stars not trying to force
the ball of people you lead with us and we not I and me that's the biggest thing so when you
match the impact of the scheme and the players that you're going to go out and get with the
position of value what you do is say look Devon Lloyd's great but we ain't never spending that kind
of money on an off-ball linebacker unless he already has that money and it's for him we can't we
can't you know we we don't want to screw around with that because that dude is too important to us
we'll never spend that much money on Travis ETN and I know I'm getting to what I'm going to talk
about next like would you what would you do but I do believe that they don't believe that you
have to spend that money in those areas are they good players absolutely I'm going to use this
example I'm always I'm going to the analogy king you go to a furniture store your wife walks in
her furniture store and say wow that looks great yeah that is nice but they don't match nothing
we got in the house already you see how quick that is I can say two things are true that's a nice
piece of furniture that piece of furniture does not match anything that we have in our home currently
so if I get that I'm going to have to spend money else where it's going bleed into me having to
use extra money to change what we already have and just because I want to get that one piece
that's not the way it works in furniture and they ain't the way it works on a football team
they can admit that both Travis not Travis Travis H&N and Devin Lloyd are good players
but at some point you can also admit but for where we want to go I can't pay them that
I got to get somebody else and then you also know how you want to play the things you want to do
that maybe those guys don't do as much and when you let them go somebody else
basal tuton and ventral miller can do it satisfactorily enough to the point where you won't miss
that they're gone and in the meantime you can add other things to sort of change the way that
big pot of gumbo tastes so you got to know all of these things or at least have an educated guess
at these things before you try to go out and figure out what the team is actually going to do
in the draft or for you I can see I'm going to ask you would you would you do certain things
if Travis H&N and Devin Lloyd weren't members of the Jaguars but were this good for other teams
would you as the Jaguars have gone out and given them the contracts that they got the answer for
me is no and I'll tell you why the answer for you should be no also in just a second

getting to it here on lockdown jaguars your team every day shout out to the every day
so joining us you guys know it's almost like a book that we write and every day is a different
chapter but it's kind of book you can jump on at any moment and be right up to date and what we're
talking about today and I'll refer you back to some of our previous shows we're talking about team
building and how you can make sure that you are in in what we call aligned from player to coaches
how many times the player has gone to other teams or come to this team from somewhere else and
the production didn't match I mean either good or bad like die me brown didn't play anything here the
way he played down the stretch for washington the year before we signed him and I know that they
thought that that's what they were getting but they just didn't no harm no five was the one
you're deal he moved on right Eric arms did it was played out of position his first year
came into get you started playing real well last year and then he got injured so I think the jaguars
are hoping that he can play the way he was playing every beginning year before he got banged up
but even to that and not knowing what a guy was going through behind the scenes that's kind of
led all of us to think that they need to actually go out and invest in the three technique which
they have not done yet and they still might not do that in the drought would you double down on
going to get the three technique knowing you still have Eric arms did under contract and may
sound stiff may sound Smith trying to make his way the hard thing is is you have to go you have to
do something if you want to improve you can look towards the future but the thing is is the person
that you go get might not play because he's throwing in line especially if the other two dudes
figure it out if arm stand has a kind of year that he has had in the past even though he's older
and even if he moves on you still have Mason Smith coming back in 27 in his third year and what if
he plays gangbusters now you got two and that's good but did you get another three technique at the
expense of another position so considering that they know that injuries happen considering that
you can't have too many defensive linemen considering that this is a really really good team and they
don't have a first round pick would you do it I've mentioned people would yesterday and I had
everybody in their brother telling me the Jaguar is then traded so much man you can't trade anything
to move up and they didn't even realize it just only cost them a third round pick to move up and
get a better player would you do it would you trade up how about in free agency would you have gone
out and re-signed Travis H&N to the money that he signed if he wasn't your own player because
everybody in their brother told me they weren't going to go and pay Kenneth Walker I think
Kenneth Walker's better than H&N by the way but didn't know wrong we just keep Travis instead of
paying Kenneth Walker well once free agency happens they're not your players anymore if you're
trying to keep a dude off the market that's fine but once free agency happens they're not your
players anymore so a person that tells me that they wouldn't have paid Kenneth Walker but they
would have played ETN is only being held hostage by the fact that they're used to a channel ETN
and they're used to seeing him in the Jaguar uniform and what they don't want is change not wanting
change this qualifies you for being able to make that decision because GMs have to make changes
every year they have to give contracts to select players each and every year and let the other
players walk would you have gone out and signed an off-ball linebacker to a three year 45 million
dollar deal with the ability of Devon Lloyd if you didn't have to the answer for me again is no I
wouldn't have done it so why do you think you have to pay to keep your own people if it's something
you wouldn't do you're not obligated to do it once they're in free agency you let them get there
obviously we have to start understanding before we do this and I know I do another show locked
on NFL where I have to try to figure out what all the teams around the league are trying to do an
order for me to talk about it and that's I use that ability by the way and I've always done it I've
always used what other people will do to help me when it comes to the Jaguars and you really have
to do it this year because the Jaguars are 55 picks down all right so you have to almost have a
realistic approach to it when you're looking at who they might be able to get who they who
they'll who they'll draft who will be available because it's hard enough when it's pick number five
it's really really hard when it's pick number 50 something so but you have to be in tune with okay what
type of players that they like what do they need what do you think that they want and that's why we
share a lot of information around our network and when people call me and I see some of these
mock saying the Jaguars need to run it back I think it's funny no they don't need to run it back
now they need a wirelessly no they don't need a wire well they need a corner absolutely not they do
not need they don't technically need anything really you know that's why they're saying best player
available but it's impossible for you to know what would you do if you were in the situation of a GM
if you don't at least try to put yourself into his perspective and do it from his point of view
with his mind say and you nobody really knows what these guys are thinking but it's only you can
only guess based on what they've done in the past and and really listen to the words that they say
and understand that if they ain't ever lied to you they've never deceived you there's no reason not
to believe what they're saying and what they're basically telling you is we can go line up right now
and we'd be cool with it now it's counter intuitive for them to have to tell us exactly what they'll
do in the draft because they shouldn't be doing that anyway because the the mystery part of this
is really uh where it's at you don't want anybody to know what you're trying to do or what you're
thinking because then they would know where you think you're weak and and they'd also be able to
get in front of you and take your players so it's all an educated guess to us but the difference
between playing GM is how are you going to do that if you don't at least spend a little bit of time
trying to figure out what they lead with what makes them move what's the most important for them
how they feel about the foundational pieces and the cornerstones that they already have do they
need to add talent at the top to get to their goals do they need to uh raise the floor do they
need to inject the talent in the middle are they thinking about contracts moving ahead all of those
things have to go into your consideration when you do your mocks do your mocks and drop a man to
