Manchester Council Revives 500 Homes, Tackles Housing Shortage

On March 23, Manchester City Council's empty homes team has reached a big goal since starting

up in 2024.

In less than two years, they brought 500 long-term empty properties back into use.

This work tackles the city's housing shortage by providing more spots for social rent,

council homes, and temporary stays.

Empty homes overall have dropped 53% since 2013, hitting a record low, though about 1,500

still sit.

They've vacant over six months.

These revived homes make a real difference for families in need and cut costs on pricey

homeless shelters.

Take one rundown property in Austin, wrecked by fire and causing neighborhood headaches,

it got fixed up and leased to the council for family spacing, eviction.

Now, the council wrapped up a public consultation on a fresh strategy for the rest, mostly private

homes with tricky backstories.

It focuses on partnering with owners for repairs, energy upgrades, and fixing community

trouble spots.

Efforts like these keep building momentum to house more people affordably and sustainably

across Manchester.
