On this day, March 4, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated during the devs of the
Great Depression. In his first inaugural address, he sought to calm a fearful nation with the
words, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Also on this day, in 1789, the United States
Constitution officially went into effect. Also on this day, in 1933, Congress proposed the 21st
Amendment, beginning the repeal of prohibition.
