On this day, March 5, 1770, British soldiers fired into a crowd of American colonists
in Boston killing five men and what became known as the Boston Massacre, the incident intensified
colonial resentment and helped ignite the movement toward revolution. Also on this day,
in 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt declared a nationwide bank holiday to stabilize the collapsing
financial system. Also on this day, in 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his iron curtain speech.
