Mariners looking to finish the season strong, but will need help to make the postseason

1:03as some of the heavy stuff today, that is Rick Ritz, who is joining us. Are you in Sacramento, Rick, for this road trip? Yeah, Charlie, I'm in Sacramento here at the hotel. I got up at my coffee this morning and getting ready to take on the athletics tonight. Final road trip of the regular season. We got three here in Sacramento, then three in Anheim, and three in Colorado. So yeah, ready to go. Yes, for the regular season, there is still technically a shot at the playoffs, right? There is, Manda. You know, the Mariners have what, about 15, 16 games left to go in the regular season, six games out, but they really need a lot of help right now. They need the Astros to take a dive, you know, lose four or five in a row in a hurry. The Mariners need to win five or six in a row in a hurry to shorten that gap, because when we come home, we play the Astros in a brief two games series, and we have four against the Angels, so the schedule favors the Mariners as far as, you know, playing teams with records under 500,

2:04but Mariners got to go out and win these games, which they did the last two days against the Texas Rangers. We still hope. Talk about that in terms of what was different from the past couple of games they had been struggling. Yeah, Charlie, I think what happened in the last couple of games is they played a complete game, you know, in order to put together winning streak like they did last year, winning 10 in a row, 17 out of 18, everything has to go right. You know, the offense with the defense, and the pitching Logan Gilbert was outstanding yesterday, seven innings, and he struck out, he struck out 11 Jacob de Graham with six innings and struck out 12, but they got DeGround finally out of the ballgame and beat the Rangers, both Pat and Julio hit that three run home run. But it was a little things, you know, Cal Raleigh draws a walk and the other night and gets to the second base and I pop up to the catcher and scores on a basic by Taylor Ward. This is what happened a couple of nights ago when they won three to two.

3:05So you got to have those little things right. It was heads up played by Cole Young for the final out of the ballgame. Get a fourth to the second base. The runner was called out by the second base up higher, but it turned out he was safe, but he made the throw to first base. He didn't give up and the runner, the hitter burger was out of first base, so the game was over either way, but it takes, you know, little things like that to win ball games. Monos has been great out of the bullpen. So that's what we saw. That's what has to happen, a complete game, pitching defense and the pitching and the offense. You know, Rick, I think it's gotten lost a little bit in some of the struggles that the team has had, but I mean, look at some of the guys that they've called up in the last month or so. Obviously, Kate Anderson has been really good, got his first win this past week. Talk to us about last month's heads. I mean, this dude just hates monster bombs. Yeah, this guy's a stud. He reminds me of a young Charlie Harder.

4:05No one's trying to do the job. He's doing glasses, Rick. That went to his head. Not quite awake yet. You know, he could tell the video, but no, he's something special. I mean, he had 38 home runs out of the mind of the leagues. 96 runs bad and then he's big and strong. He's the nicest kid you level want to meet. He plays the game with the joy that we saw Ken Griffey Jr. when he was 19 years of age, but he puts that on the ball when he does. It goes a long way. A couple of days ago, he hit the longest old run and team mobile park history 474 feet to right center field over the J-Rod squad, just to the right of the batter's eye. But he's going to be something to watch for many, many years to come. He's just a good ball player. He's getting better defensively on a right field. He played his third game at right field. He's played only five games in the big leagues. In his major league debut at Fenway Park in Boston, he draws a walk his first day bad. Normally, kids, you don't want to swing at everything, but he didn't.

5:05That shows you he's got some plate discipline. Number one, when you have that, the pitcher has to throw you a strike. You have to strengthen like he does. He can hit the ball out of the ballpark. He had an RBI single his first major league hit. Then his first major league home run was the same game at Fenway and he hit it out straight away center field. So I think he's going to be a complete hitter. He's going to hit for a decent average, but he's going to hit a lot of home runs and driving a lot of runs. And he's like I said, the nicest kid in the world too. And then obviously we we've now seen Michael Royo be brought up as well. Haven't really seen him play much this past week. What are we kind of expecting from him the rest of the season going in the next season? Yeah, Michael is just a really good hitter, David and Amanda and Charlie. He hits the ball all over the place. He uses foul line to foul line gap to gap. It makes really good contact. He's going to hit the ball out of the ballpark occasionally. But his job is to you know get on base, get your base hits and driving some runs.

6:05They kind of find a place for him to play. He's not going to play second base. Cole Young is going to be there for a long, long time. He's had an incredible season, but he can help you out at second base. Cole Young plays every day. He's played every game this year except one. And he's working out and left field on a triple A. And his defense is getting better and better. Randy Rosenrand is going to be a free agent. He's been a free agent for the last 20 years. So hopefully he's back, but you never know. But this kid is going to just be a really solid, major league hitter. And I love the relationship between him and Lissaro. They both signed as international free agents the same year in 2022. They're best friends. They come up through the organization each stop along the way together. They both at W. Arkansas. They were both at triple A to Cava. They were going to be around for a long time. Then you got Kate Anderson, who won his first big league game a couple of days ago. He was outstanding. Got through that lineup for the third time using his good change of good sliders,

7:06brought it as fastball. And I tell you what he's something special. His first year in Pro Ball. Last year he was pitching the college world series for LSU. So the future is bright for this organization. And we saw that years ago when they started drafting Logan Gilbert in the first round. Kirby the first round. Everston Hancock of the first round. The following year in 2021 we got Bryce Miller in the fourth round. Brian Woon the sixth round. So these kids are something special. Our Scouting Department is amazing. Our amateur scouts. Rick, you started your broadcasting career in the minor leagues. And here you are. You're on your last road trip of your career. And the A's are playing in a minor league stadium. There's something poetic about that, I think. Yeah. I guess what goes around comes around, Charlie. Yeah, I mean, 52 years ago I started this journey in 1975. And Alexander Louisiana making $200 a month. I was the clubhouse guy, washing uniforms and shining the shoes for Bruce Souter,

8:06Jack Clark, Mitchell Page. I ate the leftover hot dogs from the concession stands. The girls there would give me the leftover hot dogs. I can't eat a hot dog today. Those hot dogs from heaven come down from above me. I go, get away. But I did three meetings of play by play. And that's how I get started down in the minor league. So yeah, a lot of memories are going through my mind right now. I'm in a hotel room. It's my first road trip in a long time. I'm in the last road trip in the big leagues with the Mariners. So I'm going to be a wreck at the end of the regular season. It's going to be a lot of fun. But I'm ready for the next chapter in my life. I really am. Well, we will take all the time we need. We'll enjoy every minute of you being on the air. Rick, always appreciate you joining us next week. That'll be the next to the last week of your career. And then Sunday afternoon, the final game. So like I said, I'm going to be a mess. But I can't thank the Mariners enough the way they've treated me for 41 years. They've given me this opportunity to work with Dave Nehau. So for 25 years, you know, you're talking about the luckiest guy in the face. He's the earth along with Luke Eric when he made his speech way back when. And Kevin Kremman and the guys they work with now. Excuse me. Don't get me choked up. But I've been very, very blessed to be here for 41 years and raised my family here, my grandkids. So a lot of motions, but I've had the good Lord has blessed me. I've had a wonderful journey to spend my time with you guys. I've loved every second of it. And hopefully we can still do this, you know, next year talking about the Mariners in 2027. Oh, you weren't here for that news last week, David.
