Well, what's the tradition unlike any other? Is it the golden glow of the masters on a late
Sunday afternoon at Augusta National? Or our guy, Marky Mark, being there at a Dave
Grohl acoustic set at the Draft King's party. We'll find out if I tell you.
You're listening to KNBR, AM and KNBR FM San Francisco, these sports leaders,
a cumulus media station. The hell with Bobby Jones, Cliff Roberts,
Hoody Johnson, my guy at Augusta, his mark, Candace R. O. Marky Mark, back with his
boys, Murphy Marcus. Happy and Marcus Reese says because they say that Georgia
accent, tournament, happy, tournament week. Good morning, Marky Mark, brother.
And I'm so happy you're there. How are you, brother? What's up, Marky Mark?
Murphy, Murphy Marcus. Good morning, San Francisco, from Augusta, Georgia,
from the Tudomins. It's spelled T-U-N-A-Mint, the Tudomins, Tudomins.
Dude, well, first of all, I need to know your whereabouts. You still at the rental house
before you decamp? Where are we? No, no, I am in the media center and a little
nice quiet radio booth. So I'm not bothering anybody with my dulcet tones.
The, you find a little alcove near the, to get away from the international media that is
swamping Augusta National. First and foremost, bro, you know, every talks about the,
the pines and the azaleas. You're talking Dave Grohl at a draft King's party. Is there
you're talking? Well, that's, that's been my highlight of the week so far last night. I just kind
of stumbled into getting into this little, I tell you that the corporate dollar is alive and well.
Let me, let me pause you right there. Let me tell you something about Marky Mark. There's no
stumbling in. There's no stumbling in. The man, the man scouted the scene, figured out where was
the place to be. He heard there was a draft King's party, which is the whole other thing we can
discuss. And that Dave Grohl was doing an acoustic set and Mark, quote unquote, stumbled in, right?
Well, maybe I was in the front row. That's possible that I was there. And as you know,
I did send you some videos. So you saw where I was at. It was, it was, it was unreal. Yeah.
Well, Marky Mark, I want to ask, do you like seeing stuff like that at the Masters? I mean,
we were talking earlier about yesterday at the par three challenge. We saw Kevin Hart and Jason
Kelsey at Caddy's like, do you like seeing this blend of celebrities and athletes kind of encroaching
on the Masters? You know, Mark, it's, I'm okay with it. I mean, listen, I have some old school in
me, but I also know where we're going. And, you know, what the thing is, it's the interesting
thing is the Masters just not really need to expand its audience per se, because it's already the
most watched golf tournament on the planet. But, you know, I think they're just going with,
you know, with, with the way that we know what I was, I will say that I was thinking of Merff,
you know, having been here and covered this, where there's no cell phones allowed. And they're
all very state about that kind of thing. And they want it to be a very analog world.
Well, if you're going to start throwing Kevin Hart and Jason Kelsey over there and
celebrate, celebrating it up a little bit, then just let people carry their cell phones,
make pictures. You know what I mean? If we're going to go that route, let's go all the way.
We'll tell that to Mark Calcovec, you know, 1989 British Open Champ, writer, cup player,
guys, has a real place in golf history. They threw his ass out yesterday for being on his stuff.
Well, I would, I would, I would go with the, uh, to borrow from one of the great movies of all time,
light map Frances. I mean, it's got a green jacket. It's what it comes to.
Calc is like, yo, man, come on. He must have a couple of top 20s there. He's like, well,
yo, what? Where's my clear at jugs? So anyway, uh, let's get into it, Marky Mark,
the masters. Who's gonna win the winner of the defending champions? Of course, the very,
very, very popular Rory McElroy. That's been talked about, written about, wept about his
grand slam win so much. So, Marky, Mark, and we'll start there so much so that I feel like
it's too much to ask for this guy to repeat. First of all, it's very hard to repeat, right?
You can list on one hand the Tiger Woods with Nick Fowler, Jack Nickless. I believe are the only ones
who've done it. If you can correct me on that, but I don't believe Nick did it. No, I don't think
Nick Fowler did back to back. I think 87 88. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Anyway, I don't know. I'll look into it.
But the point is, is my, is my instinct correct? Is it too much to ask Rory to dip into that well
again? Or now that he's broken through, do we see him late Sunday afternoon? I feel the latter
on that, to be honest with you, Marify. In fact, I'm surprised that, you know, I mean, in a lot of
betting circles, Rory's like the third or fourth favorite, you know, after Scotty and Rom and I think
you bit Bryson's up there. And I feel like this guy is like, well, first of all, you know,
when we spoke to him on Tuesday, with a champion dinner, he looked as relaxed as I've ever seen him
in an interview, you know, in a large interview setting, if you will. Like, you know, like, you know,
in the middle of your room, this guy's liberated, man. He doesn't need anything. He has everything
already. So why would that not just free? I think that's going to free you up beyond comprehension
to just go out there and just let it loose and play free. And that's how players play their best
anyway. So I would think that if anything, he would be spurred on to, I don't feel like there's
any pressure on him to repeat just because, as you said, it's been done so infrequently.
So I, you know, to me, he would be the favorite this week if I, you know, if I was setting the odds,
I don't think he's going to win. But if I was, if I was looking at guys who are favorites,
I would have to think he'd be right up there with Scotty, you know, it could very least, if not above
Scotty. By the way, just a factual corrections here. Jack Nickless 6566 Fowldo 8990 8990. And then
Tiger 0102, what's your boy? I was out there for both of those. Yeah, Tiger, the last one to do
in 0102, but Mark, there's no tiger this year. There's no till. And you've met our board off
before young Tony. He's a huge golf guy. He was born in 1998. So he's never watched a master's
tournament that did not have tiger or fill participating. So what are the vibes down at the
masters without tiger and without fill out there? Well, it's kind of a two way thing, Mark.
As first of all, you know, we'll, everything moves on, right? I mean, whenever I,
neighbors is finished with what we're doing, however good we are, impactful, we might be in
our, what we've done. Not to say people don't remember you, but, you know, it, you know, moves on,
doesn't, nothing stands still. So, you know, these guys are already both obviously past any sort
of prime, whether we're going to be a factor in the tournament, but at this place where it is
a little bit different is the past champions come back every year. That's the culture here,
and that's that's one of the charms of the weekend of the tournament. So it is weird to see
neither guy here. Obviously, Phil is, is, is handling some, some, some family health issues. Tiger,
we all know is in rehab. I expect both of those guys to be back next year. I certainly hope
they're both back. And it is weird. Yeah, I think the weirdest part of the, of the week was probably
the champions dinner for those, for neither guy to be there because Phil is, you know, usually very
much the life of the party in that, in that setting, you know, telling stories and soaking things in
and obviously tiger is tiger. So that must have been very odd feeling for those past champions not
to see those guys in the room on Tuesday night. It is a definite time, a changing time in history.
And you're right, but you know, still there? Fricking Jack Nicholas at age 86 and Gary freaking
player at age 90. And then the spring chicken Tom Watson. So we just to make sure that people who
don't know about this, the tradition, as you mentioned, the champions dinner, they bring back
everybody on the big night to bring back everybody who's ever wanted. And that includes randos,
like Danny Willett and Charles Schwarzel wanted. And you're like, these guys walking the door.
We're weird. Yeah, and they're weird. They show up at the door and security is like, yeah, yeah,
you know, excuse me, I got to patch you down, sir. What are you doing here? But because I was
looking at the picture, you know, they always put out the portrait. They're all there at the table.
And I know all but three. And I'm like, well, the three guys, somebody in one of those guys is Danny
Willett and one Charles Schwarzel because I don't know if those guys look like so. But anyway,
point is is that that Nicholas and just a just a brief moment on that on that classic tradition,
Nicholas of 86 player at 90 player. Did the karate kick after the t-shirt? So that's
the key of the key of the jam. I mean, I don't know if you got to set in on their presser at all
or anything. I mean, this is the 40 year anniversary of Jack's 86 win. It's amazing. You know, it's
you know, that like I referred to you before is the is the is one of the coolest things about
this tournament is having guys like that. They were still part of it. You know, I mean, the past
US Open Champions aren't there doing these kind of things or you know, even, you know, in Open
Champions if there is a little bit of, you know, more of a tradition there. But, you know, just to
see Jack, you know, listen, I remembered Arnie's last one. And I remember the first one without
Arnie there. And that was one of the most powerful emotional mornings I can, you know, in sports
that I can remember was, you know, when Billy Payne, then the chairman, you know, laid Arnie's
jacket over a chair on the first tee. Yeah, if he, you know, his presence was there as the other
guys as Jack and Gary player hit their ceremonial tee shots. So it's, I mean, you know, you
know, you steal from the great Jim Nancy, you and I know and love. Murph, it is a tradition like
no other. And it really really is no place that does it like this. And that that Thursday morning
deal is special. Vince Cone is redefining news talk. I'm Vince guy's host of the Vince podcast.

Our kid is ours. The voice you hear our buddy from the New York Post who's been at every master's
sense. I think it's what you 95 Ollie. Is that your first one? No, no, so 94 was my first. So I
actually was at one without tuck your instill. I was Jose Jose Maria La Fable first green jacket with
Chevy slipping the the note in his locker on Sunday Sunday morning to to inspire him. That was my
first one. Wow, man, Ollie, class player, class player. Okay. By the way, who by the way is
two under par and leading the golf tournament? The man knows his way around the track, my friend.
He's not asking for directions, bro. He's not asking for directions. He knows his way around the
track. Like you know, you were right around a cliff. That's Marcus is, you know, Marcus hold out from
42 yards on the eighth hole at the cliffs. And Marcus is not a man who plays a lot of golf. He
showed up with a bag that was remarkable in its ancient quality, dude. Clubs from the 60s, 70s
and 80s in there, dude. Marcus, I like to go. I like to call that old school. Yeah,
Marcus, I've got the old school ping clubs in a Verizon wireless putter. He's got a putter that's
branded Verizon wireless. Like he wanted it like he wanted it like a like an elementary school fair.
But he's rolling. He's hitting lagpuds from 30 feet to about an inch. I love it. I love
when you got to get him out there more. He never plays. I took him out to the cliffs. He hit his
t-shirt on an eight short 40 yards. I said, yeah, here's what I want you to try to chip this
thing up there. He holds it out. There's all credit to my camera. You know why? Because he can.
That's why. Okay, let's get into it. Scotty Sheffler, the fugitive famously arrested at a
PGA recently 10, 1044 AM today, California time, 1044 AM. And for some reason, people are not
hot on the greatest player in the world. Or are you hot on the greatest player on the world?
Well, I'm not I'm not cooled off on him. I can tell you that. I mean, you know, what's
happened with Scotty guys is he has now raised the bar like Tiger used to raise the bar. So
Tiger would be mosing along in a year where he only had one or two wins. Everybody would think
he was at a bad slump, you know, and and so Scotty Scotty one early in the year at the MX out,
you know, out kind of your way, little south. And you know, he's got a couple of top
fives in the spring. But yet everybody thinks, oh, what's wrong with Scotty, you know, and
you know, he just had a second child him and his wife literally like last week.
And or week or week and a half ago. So he hasn't played since the player's championship. So
we little out of sight at a mine kind of thing didn't play great at the players, you know,
which is the biggest tournament before he gets to this. So I think a lot of people are just kind
of dismissing them, which I think is a bad mistake because the guys, you know, gunning for,
you know, three and three jackets in five years, which is absurd. So, you know, I am not dismissing
him whatsoever. I think he is going to be in the mix. He's absolutely would shock me in any way
if he would win. And it would shock me if he's not up near the leaderboard laid on Sunday.
So you're high on Rory, you're high on Scotty. Let's get into some other guys before we let you go.
The guys we never see anymore because they play on the freaking live tour. So I'm like on the WB
with Dawson's Creek or whatever, dude. But they're getting, they're getting, they're getting
you served by the WB by Dawson's Creek. Bryson, D-Chambeau, California kid,
Clovis, California, 707 AM, our time. And then big Johnny Rom, who has won this thing,
he slipped into a green jacket. He's got those Spanish hands that Sevi and Ali had in the class
of John Rom, 10-08 AM. Those two live tour guys, are you high on them or are you down on them?
Not down on them at all. You listen, Bryson was right there last year, you know,
you know, dueling it out with Rory and he faltered on the back nine. But, you know, and he's also,
he's got two, you know, great finishes here in the last couple, three years, including the last
year. So, and I think he's figured this place out a little bit. So I think it will be a natural
progression for him, you know, to, you know, to, to, to have that green jacket on by the end of the
week. And Rom, as you said, he's done it around here before. That's a big thing to me. Experience
is huge here. If you've had good, you know, I was referred back to Cill. Still, every time he
drove down Magnolia Lane, believed he could win the golf tournament. And if he would hear this
week at age 54 or 55, whatever he is there, I believe that he would still think he could win
this golf tournament. Because he knows the nuances, he knows how to get it around. As you just said
about all the football, right? It was a little bit older, right? These guys experience matters. And,
and Rom, I, I, I don't discount whatsoever. The other guy that I think is sneaky is Patrick Reed,
guys, speaking of Liv, who just left Liv. Patrick Reed's also won around here. And, and he's played
really well, you know, overseas as he's, as he's trying to work his way back out of the PJ tour.
So I wouldn't, I wouldn't discount him whatsoever. He, as well. Okay, so three live guys,
Rom, D. Shambo, and Pat Reed, a couple of their names to throw at you before we get out of here.
Everybody's hot. You know, euros win there. It's, be honest now. Yeah, much to this. Yeah.
I almost made a joke there. I'm going to stay away from that.
Ludwig Oberg. First of all, who doesn't love the frickin swing? Who doesn't love the fact that he
takes 1.9 seconds to address the ball and hit it. And he's just an absolute machine. And he's a
euro. And everybody likes him. And he's with, how about this group? And this is the other guy I
got to ask you about because I have to confess. I, I fell a little sleep in January as watching the
49ers try to beat the Eagles and the Seahawks. While this guy named Chris Gotterup was winning early
on, people are high on this guy. Chris Gotterup. Now he's never played the Masters. And in the modern
era, Marke Mark, other than the guys who first played it in the 30s, Fuzzy Zellers, the only guy
who ever won his first try in 1979. So it's not, you just said about experience to your point.
So just a little bit of that group, the group at 10.08 AM, our time is, is John Rom, Ludwig Oberg
and Chris Gotterup. That's a better paradise there. Go buddy. It is. It is. So Oberg has had
amazing results here. And you know, he should have won the players championship. He just, he kind
of just melted down on the back nine. That's that saw a grass and opened the door for Ken, Ken,
young, who also I think has a good chance to win here. But I'm massively high on Gotterup.
You know, obviously he's a Jersey Shore kid, you know, and that's where I live. He's from like
eight minutes from my house down the Jersey Shore. I know his family pretty well. Now, you know,
having done some bunch of stories on Chris. Chris has all the goods. He's long as sin. You know,
he's chipping his phenomenal and he's been really working on his iron game here at this long iron
game. I get a big piece on them earlier in the week, you know, with his coach, swing coach.
I actually picked Chris in the in the New York Post to win this thing. Oh, I feel like
I'm kind of a big kind of synergy guy and just feel or whatever. And I think there's a lot of
mystical stuff that goes on around this place. As you know, we talked about it. Well, this is the first
masters that we haven't had Fuzzy Zeller because he passed away in November. And he was as
as your reference, the last guy to win here and his first go round. And I'm picking Chris to be
that next guy to do that. I think he's got the goods. So you jumped ahead. I was going to end
it by saying, who's your guy? And you got, I named him. It's got her up. You're going with him.
Yeah. Yeah. You kind of my, my eyes, my eyes widened because I really are high on now. He's
good. You know what? You know what? He has a great, he's just a regular freaking guy. He's just,
you know what I mean? He has a great attitude. He's unfazed and you need that. You know, there's
a lot of frustrations around here in golf in general, but certainly at the masters. And he's got a
great attitude. I think he's got all the goods. Given that you are close to him, you picked him in
the post. He's a Jersey Shore guy. Will he be at an upcoming Springsteen show? You know, I have not
talked to him about music. And I'm guessing he's a little bit younger. So I'm not sure. Now that
you say that, the next time I have a chat with him, I'm going to kind of get his musical taste.
But I do not know what his, that his dad is a Bruce guy. That is a rumson country club.
Pretty decorated player himself. He's a scratch. And, you know, I was having a laugh at him
the other day. Outside of Chris's press conference, you know, because he's, he's
dialing himself up for a little summer golf over at rumson looking to win some more trophies over there.
So you didn't think to ask him about how about Bruce playing purple rain in Minneapolis. You didn't
ask him about that? I do. I tell you what that that that raised that raised the hair in my back
of my neck. I saw I was that I was at the, I was in Brooklyn to see Bruce literally like a day
after Prince passed away and they played purple rain that night. And it was remains one of the
most amazing musical performances I've ever seen in my life. All right. Well, listen, you're one
of our all-time favorite human beings. We love you being at Augusta National makes us feel better.
But I just have to leave you with one parting shot. Because where was your boy on Tuesday with
Big Deck Murphy, your buddy? They're who you've dined with at Patsys in New York City, by the way.
100%. Yeah. There we were playing Pebble Beach, brother. How about that? I saw the pictures.
I saw the pictures. That looks spectacular. That looks. I did hear a rumor. Maybe from you,
that maybe it was going to be a little dendon to that special run with a little Al Januson
over Cal. There is going to be a little count a little more. There's going to be a local post script
later in April. That is correct. But we're strolling the heavenly grounds. My friend,
you ever heard of it? Pebble Beach? You heard of it? I have heard of it. I played there
in my honeymoon. I played full rack rate. I was waiting at the gates of the 17 mile drive,
about 430 in the morning to get into the walk-on. You probably played better night. In fact,
I know you played better than I played. Waited driving rain. It started pouring on a technical
plan. You saw standing water by the back nine. By the way, no rain check. By the way. Oh god,
no. I played it in a monsoon once too. By the way, Candace's Facebook pictures. You can see
this guy behind us, bro. No rain. I love it. All right, but I see that she's a professional.
I know she's pretty good. Those photos are awesome. Brad Manchin has tutored her stuff.
Dude, always good to know you're there. When is the first grill room visit? What are we
hitting? A little peach cobbler? What are we doing? When's the first owner? I'm not a big
dessert guy. You're the peach cobbler guy, so I may just order one in your honor. Kind of like
when Billy Payne laid the Arise Jacket over the chair. I'm going to just order a piece cobbler,
let it sit next to me. No, put it at an empty chair and let it melt. Let the ice cream melt.
Let the ice cream melt. Man, I once was with Marky Mark in the grill room and Arnold Palmer sat next
to us and I ordered an Arnold Palmer next to Arnold Palmer. That was very exciting and I flat
out eavesdropped on his order. He got a coke. I was like, oh, man, you're drinking a
sip with you there. Of course you were. All right, well, I can't wait to read all about it,
buddy, and follow you and thanks for joining us and enjoy the hell out of it. Yeah, thanks,
Marky Mark. Thanks guys. I'll talk to you soon. There it is. Marky Mark from Augusta, Georgia,
the tradition continues. 730, Zach Manazzy and Giants General Manager on these sports hitters.
