Miami Marlins’ bullpen woes reach a crisis point as Pete Fairbanks falters in the ninth, allowing the Los Angeles Dodgers to rally for a walk-off win. Can the Marlins trust their $13 million closer after another blown save and a potential injury? Jamie Goldman unpacks the late-game meltdown, Tyler Phillips’ tough spot, and how missed opportunities at the plate—including a critical bases-loaded letdown—cost the Fish a rare chance to win at Dodger Stadium.
Spotlighting standout performances from Liam Hicks (second in MLB RBIs), Xavier Edwards’ on-base clinic, and Jacob Marsee’s resurgence, the episode also examines manager Clayton McCullough's quick hook with starters Chris Paddack and Janson Junk. Previewing tonight’s Janson Junk vs. Shohei Ohtani pitching matchup, the focus shifts to whether the Marlins can finally break their Los Angeles curse. Will offensive struggles and bullpen instability derail a promising stretch, or is a turnaround on the horizon?

Up 4-2 in the 9th and it happens again.
Fairbanks loses command and the Marlins lose the game.
This isn't just a bad night anymore.
This is starting to look like a real bullpen problem.

On today's show, we will preview the Marlins matchup with the Dodgers tonight as Janssen
Junk gets the start.
He gets a tall task as he's facing Shohei Ohtani on the other side.
We'll get into that.
Plus, we'll take a look back at some of the missed opportunities offensively last night.
There were some opportunities throughout that ballgame for the Marlins to maybe get some
insurance.
Fish couldn't come through, but we start today.
With the Pete Fairbanks meltdown that we saw last night in the ninth inning.
So let's set the stage for you all.
We're going to fast forward to the bottom of the night.
Four to two, Marlins lead is your score.
We count on our $13 million dollar man, Pete Fairbanks.
We call him out of the bullpen to come in and close the game.
What happened after that complete disaster ensued?
Pete allows multiple lead off walks and then a couple of hits and then he gets pulled.
He leaves the game with an injury and the Marlins lose the game.
Eventually, Tyler Phillips comes into the ballgame.
He allowed the final blow after the Dodgers tied it.
They ended up getting the lead late in that ballgame and they got the win on a walkoff
base hit last night.
The struggles for Pete Fairbanks continue to pile up last night.
We had a lead off walk two of them and then Shohei Otani ripped a ground rule double that
the Marlins honestly got lucky on because it was a ground rule double.
If that one stayed in play, it probably would have scored two runs instead.
It only scored once only scored one run, but it didn't matter because the Marlins continued
to struggle in that game.
Final line last night for Fairbanks.
One hit allowed, four walks, three regular walks, one intentional walk, three earned runs
and a loss.
He just put himself behind the eight ball with those two lead off walks in the ninth inning
and then Shohei came up and that was all she wrote for the pitch last night.
I don't blame Tyler Phillips whatsoever for that.
I don't blame Clayton McCullough for that at all.
He went to his closer, the guy that you're supposed to be able to count on.
This isn't the first instance of Fairbanks kind of not living up to expectations so far
this season.
Obviously last night was a big blunder and just a gut wrenching way to lose a game.
We talked about this yesterday, Ethan and I and we knew going into this that this wasn't
going to be easy for the Marlins.
The Dodgers are arguably the best team in baseball.
It's hard to even argue any other team is better than them.
World Series champions last season and they brought everyone back.
They're still up and down this line up anywhere.
You look Freddie Freeman, Teosker, Hernandez, Shohei, Otani, they have a couple injuries
right now, Mookie Betts.
It doesn't even matter.
Will Smith, the list goes on and on.
This roster is loaded on the other side of things but it's a baseball game.
You get into those games and at the end of the day, it's nine innings.
You're your guys first there and you have an opportunity to go out there and win and
the Marlins eight and a half innings were right locked step with the Los Angeles Dodgers
last night.
The mighty Los Angeles Dodgers and the fish were right there and you're in a position
that if you could script that game, I don't think Clayton McCullough could have scripted
a better situation going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
You have a two run lead, you have your closer who's supposed to be your lock down guy.
You're supposed to be the guy that you can rely on.
You put him in the ball game and he goes out there and just didn't have his stuff at
all.
He had a lack of command last night and obviously, you know, a couple of locks and then
the Shohei double and then he leaves the game with an injury.
Phillips comes into the game a little bit cold.
You know, we were counting on Fairbanks to close that one out.
That's probably didn't expect to even go in that game at all.
He came in.
He got to strike out out the gate.
Kind of looked like he might skitter his way out of that tap dance his way out of it.
But then Teosker Hernandez comes up, gets the base hit to run score.
Excuse me, Kyle Tucker, not Teosker Hernandez.
But nonetheless, to run score on Tyler Phillips and the Marlins lose the game just to gut
wrenching loss for the Marlins.
You know, this is the first time we've said this, you know, where the Marlins get a lead
early in a game and then the bullpen comes in and blows it.
This is Fairbanks second blown save of the season.
He's only had 10 appearances so far this season and not all of those appearances were save
opportunities.
In fact, at least two of them weren't because he had the open in the Bronx, which we'll
get into that in a moment.
Then he had the game where they randomly put him in, you know, with like a five or six
run lead it was and Fairbanks pitched in that game as well.
So he's had a limited opportunity for save opportunities and he's already blown too.
You know, let's take a look at kind of the pattern that this is that this has been for
Fairbanks this year.
I'm going to take you through a couple of his outings here.
So I just kind of briefly teased the the start he made in the Bronx, which was a very
weird situation.
Chris Patek was scheduled to start that game and then the situation led to Fairbanks wife
was going into labor.
He wanted to still be with the team and and pitch in that game.
So they started him in that game.
They ended up being a rain delay and he was supposed to kind of be an opener for that
game.
He did go out there for the opener and it was an ugly open to that ball game in the Bronx.
Everybody hits one walk, one home run, and three earned runs in just one inning of work
against the Yankees.
So that was the first sign of Fairbanks kind of not living up to that $13 million billing
that the Marlins gave him over the off season.
That was the first instance you're thinking, hopefully, you know, his minds on his kids,
the rain delay maybe got to him, you know, there's a one off thing he'll be fine.
He goes on paternity list, he comes back and his first outing after going on about a
week, a week and a half of paternity list, he comes in for a save opportunity against
the Braves.
Now, this was a little bit of a weird situation in itself because he came in in the eighth
inning after missing about a week and a week and a half of baseball.
So that was a little bit unique.
And again, we gave him the benefit of the doubt, but he came in that ballgame, one inning
of work, three hits, three earned runs, a blown save and a high leverage opportunity,
not what you want to see.
And again, we're sitting here giving him the benefit of the doubt.
He just came off paternity list, he's not used to coming into the eighth, that was a big
spot.
We'll give him some slack for that one.
And then last week against the Cardinals at home, he gets the save.
But even in the games he's saving, he didn't look good.
He came in with a multiple run lead in that one.
He allowed a hit, he allowed an earned run and he barely survived.
He survived.
The Marlins got the win, the Marlins got the save at the end of the day.
That's all you're asking from Pete Fairbanks, get us three outs, get us the win.
And he did that against the Cardinals.
But after the rough outing he had against the Braves, after the rough outing he had against
the Yankees, he comes in against the Cardinals and lets up a run, you know, you're sitting
here and you're really starting to be a little concerned with Fairbanks, but you're okay
with it because he got the save.
He also got another save in that series and he looked pretty good in that one.
So maybe we're off to smoother pastures with Pete Fairbanks, right?
That's what you're thinking as a Marlins fan after that Cardinal series.
And then last night he comes in and blows it again.
Four walks in that game, a hit, three earned runs, Tyler Phillips tried to come in and save
the day, but he wasn't able to and the Marlins let another one slip in just a very painful
fashion waking up this morning.
You know, I went to bed, the fish were right in that ball game and you know, I had worked
before this podcast so I had to get some sleep here as much as I was pissed off because
I didn't get to watch the end of that Marlins game, but what pissed me off even more was
waking up and seeing what happened last night and seeing that Pete Fairbanks of all people,
you're a closer, the guy that you're supposed to rely on went in the game and just didn't
have his stuff and something I've kind of brushed over in this segment, he left the game
with an injury and we still haven't heard what that injury is and how long, if at all,
that injury's going to keep him out.
So just a, just a ugly, ugly end to what was a pretty good night up to that point for
the Miami Marlins last night.
You get the loss, you're starting to lose confidence in Pete Fairbanks.
Now there's an injury that's also kind of hanging over the Marlins head, so what was
such a bright opportunity for the Marlins last night to get a win against the best team
in baseball on the road somewhere where you haven't won in three years, haven't won in
Los Angeles, it looked like you're finally breaking the curse and then, you know, Fairbanks
comes in in the ninth and the wheels completely fall off.
Now, you know, it's still early in the season, Fairbanks, you know, still kind of working
through the kinks of coming back from paternity list and now he's got another thing that's
keeping him away from the team.
Hopefully that injury is not too serious and he'll be able to bounce back from this rough
outing.
But yeah, just a, just an ugly night for the Marlins last night.
Now the injury can, it adds on to it and we'll see what happens with that injury and if
he'll have to miss some time, if we'll have to get some roster moves coming in and just
a really unfortunate situation for the Marlins last night in a game that really maybe could
have turned the tides and changed the momentum of this team right now.
And speaking of that momentum and speaking of that missed opportunity last night coming
up right after this, we're going to get into the offensive side of last night's ballgame,
some guys that are still hitting really well for this Marlins team as well as some guys
that are kind of struggling and some missed chances and missed opportunities in last night's
ballgame.

Now to the offensive struggles to the offensive conundrum of this Miami Marlins ball club last
night.
Let's start with the positives.
The positives being one man and that man being Liam Hicks.
This guy believe it or not is second in major league baseball in RBI so far this season.
He has come through in the clutch every time the marlins need him to and he did it again
last night.
Fifth inning Jacob Marcy gets yourself a lead off walk.
Xavier Edwards gets a walk as well.
Traffic builds on the base paths and Liam Hicks comes up to the plate and picks up right
where he left off all season long blast a three run home run out of the park.
The fish extent or they change from their trailing to to one at that point.
They take a four to two lead at that point and we just went over what happened to that
four to two lead in that ball game.
But really good to see Liam Hicks continuing to shine and continuing to see the ball really
well.
He also did have a couple of strikeouts in that ball game last night.
Well let's focus on the positive for now with Liam Hicks the way he's been swinging
the bat has been massive for this Marlins ball club because without Liam Hicks the offense
is few and far between for this Marlins team and I kind of before we get into some missed
opportunities one other guy that's been playing really really good baseball is Xavier Edwards
who's been hitting the cover off the ball.
He went one for one last night.
Why did he go one for one?
Because he also had three walks so he was on base four times last night.
He's got a lot of speed and again I'm going to bring this up again.
I spoke about this a little bit in yesterday's show.
I don't understand why he's batting clean up yesterday's ball game is a perfect example
of why Xavier Edwards should be batting lead off not clean up.
And if you like what Marlins is doing at the lead off spot okay fine still put him at
the top of the lineup one of those first three guys in your lineup as a table setter for
the rest of the lineup.
I personally like the one two punch of Edwards and Marcy at the top of the lineup whatever
the order may be of those two may be switched it up for different ball games whatever the
case is.
But Edwards continues to play amazing I mean the way he's been playing right now he's
batting around three fifty I'm not sure what the exact number is.
He entered yesterday's number with a three forty three is on base percentage definitely
improved as well as he was on base four times last night three walks one base hit.
This is a guy who's been playing great baseball and belongs at the top of the lineup now
I won't harp on that too much you guys understand my take on that one but Xavier Edwards
Liam Hicks has been the offensive engine for this Miami Marlins team also shout out Jacob
Marcy he had a really good ball game last night as well he's been hitting it a lot better
so he you know he's made it he's made it tough for Clayton McCullough to pull him out of
the lead off spot which is why I say have them be the one two punch right out the gates
Marcy Edwards Edwards Marcy whatever the case is but Marcy last night two for three ball
game also added two walks yet a double in the third he had a single in the ninth didn't
do anything with that single but mentioning that single in the ninth that was the only hit
the Marlins had after that three run blast by Liam Hicks in the fifth inning so you go the sixth
the seventh and the eighth inning with nothing no hits I think a couple of walks were myths
then there but the Marlins are having a really tough time getting the bat on the ball getting
some ducks on the plan and driving these runs home offense has been an issue you get a couple of
games here in there where the Marlins explode we saw this in the first game of the series against
the Braves we saw this a little bit in the in the cardinal series but they can't do they haven't
been able to do it consistently and last night we saw a couple of big opportunities for the fish
where they didn't where they didn't get much starts in the first inning this wasn't a huge
opportunity but this is where it began kind of set the tone for the ball game you know you get a
you get a lead off walk it was Jacob Marcy actually the lead lead off the ball game and then
right away Kyle Stowers grounds into a double play and the opportunity fizzles you know
Stowers had a really rough night last night he uh oh for five he grounded into two double plays
in some big spots for the fish and not Stowers best game by any means but hopefully you know
these games are going to happen for anyone but Stowers coming back from injury he's still working
out the kinks he's still working himself back to the way he was last season so I don't want to harp
on Stowers too much but had some big opportunities in that ball game last night and he grounded it into
a double play in the first and uh he grounded into a double play later on in the ball game as well
so tough tough you miss some RBI spots um but don't want to harp on Stowers too much the bigger
opportunity in this ball game for the Marlins aside from when they came through in the fifth inning
actually came in the fourth uh the fish got things going with the lead off exe or excuse me auto Lopez
double Xavier Edwards then walked you know you had Augustine Ramirez mixing a single now you
got bases loaded bases loaded with only one out I've been saying this and I'm going to continue
to say it you get a runner on third with less than two outs that runner needs to score every single
time if you're the Miami Marlins they don't have what these other teams have as far as power hitting
as far as slugging they're a contact team they're a team that works relies on their speed relies on
clutch hitting relies on getting them on getting them over and getting them in and we didn't see
that last night they did end up getting one run with the bases loaded situation um and only one out
but it came on a Sanoha ground ball that the Dodgers had an error on so the only reason the Marlins
even scored anything in that inning was because of a Dodgers error it wasn't because the Marlins
actually made the play you know we'll take it we'll take the run anyway they come but you know
you had you had Owen Casey come up to the plate with only one out and bases loaded in that fourth
inning and he strikes out and he strikes out ugly struck out you had an O2 count and then the
third strike was called the pitch clock violation on Owen Casey so just a really disappointing
opportunity right there you'd like for him to put something in play a sacrifice fly beat out a
ground ball score a run keep the inning going but he strikes out and the Marlins get nothing and that
leads it all on Javier Sanoha shoulders and you know he ground it out but you know the Dodgers
ended up having an error on that play so the Marlins did score a run there but it's got to be
better it's got to be better for the Miami Marlins there and you know Casey's got to put something
in play make the defense make a play you know try to draw drive something out to the outfield he
didn't even get that third pitch you know he swung on it and missed it but it was after the
pitch clock violation had already been called so anyway you sliced it Owen Casey struck out ugly
in that fourth inning last night and it cost the Marlins as they were only able to scratch one run
across in that fourth inning and you know comes back to bite them late in the ballgame they don't
get any insurance for Fairbanks and the pitching staff the bullpen did look pretty good aside
from Fairbanks last night a couple of names that I didn't talk about John King continues to be
stellar for this Marlins team King last night went one inning perfect only took him seven pitches
to get out of that inning so he's been great his ERA is 0.75 so far for the fish this year so
King's been good um good to see foe Shay go in and have a clean inning last night you went one
inning scoreless only took him ten pitches Andrew Nardi gave us a scare Andrew Nardi allowed two
hits and a walk in last night's ballgame but he got out of the inning he danced he tapped dance
his way out of that inning and and and got out of it with a scoreless inning no runs came across
on Nardi and kept the fish in a position to win that ballgame so a couple of good notes there
from the bullpen but it doesn't matter if your closer comes in and blows it as Fairbanks did
last night so a rough one for the fish last night a lot of missed opportunities on the offensive side
and then he had Fairbanks not able to come in and close it in the ninth so a disappointing loss for
the fish but the good news about Major League Baseball you get another opportunity to do it today
and you get another opportunity to do it tomorrow so coming up right after this we'll preview tonight's
ballgame um Janssen junk gets the start for the Marlins and he's going against nobody in particular
nobody big time over on the other side only Shohei Otoni going for the Dodgers tonight so it'll
be junk versus Otoni will preview that matchup coming up right after this quick message

amazon crack open confetti craze five hour energy shot today
and finally we preview tonight's ballgame game two between the marlins and the dodgers the marlins
still looking for that first win in Los Angeles in three years it's been a tough go for the fish
in Dodger stadium and it looked like finally they were going to break the curse last night
but you lose in one of the most painful ways possible one of the most painful losses of the season
last night but the fish get another opportunity to break that curse here tonight as they face off
against the Dodgers again in Dodger stadium a late night with the fish tonight if you're in south
Florida if you're on the east coast it's a ten ten start between the fish and the Dodgers Jansen
junk gets a start for the marlins tonight junk he's been pretty good for the marlins this season
27 innings pitch ERA under four three six seven up to this point he's been he's been pretty good
he's given the marlins he's put the marlins in a position to win ball games for the most part
his most recent start may have been his best of the season he went five innings only one hit
allowed nowhere under runs he did mix in a walk as well but very good work against St. Louis
I didn't love that they pulled Jansen junk in that game against St. Louis but fish ended up
getting the win Jansen junk ended up getting the win so no harm done in that one Jansen junk had
a really good start and hopefully he's nice and rested after only 56 pitches in that start
against the Cardinals and hopefully he's ready to go because he's got a tall task in front of him
as Shohei Otani is on the bump for the Dodgers on the other side Shohei making his third start
of his career against the marlins his first two were both with the Los Angeles Angels
Shohei has been really really good both against the marlins and this season his numbers this season
24 innings pitch only one earned run so he's been fantastic he has not allowed a home run yet
so he's not he has not gotten beaten by the long ball yet this season he's got a two in all record
only allowed 12 hits in that 24 innings has also issued six walks but 25 strikeouts
to match with his six walks so Shohei as advertised has been really good so far this season
going to have to get something going get a little bit of that MJ's secret sauce going or something
because the bats have been struggling and you know there's no signs of them getting any better
as you're facing off against one of the most prolific players in baseball on the bump for the other
side in Shohei Otani Shohei will not be in the batting lineup today for the Dodgers he'll
strictly be on the mound so maybe a little bit of a relief for Jansen junk not having to go up
against Shohei and pitch against Shohei both of Shohei starts with the angels
he got one win and one loss against the marlins so the marlins have gotten to Shohei before
this will be their first crack at Shohei with the Dodgers now something I kind of wanted to
end with here is a small note from last night's ballgame this got way overshadowed by the way
that ballgame ended but I want to talk about Chris paddock start from last night because I think I
liked what I saw from paddock last night I really did in that first inning you know by the numbers
it looked like he wasn't ready to roll last night you know a couple of base hits tour and runs
not what you want to see but you take a look at those three base hits and there were two ground balls
and the Freddie Freeman base hit that it was was a pop up that just kind of blooped in between
your second baseman centerfielder and rightfielder so paddock you know it's unacceptable you can't
allow any runs no matter how they how they structure how they happen you know the box score doesn't
say oh it was a blue base hit by Freddie Freeman oh it was a ground ball base hit you know paddock
looked okay the the box score doesn't say that but after that first inning paddock was able to
clean things up he went scoreless the rest of his time out there scoreless second scoreless third
scoreless fourth and I wish I wish is is is not the best term but I really wanted Clayton McCullough
to leave paddock out there last night and we talked about this a little bit yesterday with the way
he handled Max Myers most recent start and the same thing happened last night with paddock and
paddock aside from that first inning which I didn't even think was that rough from paddock
was pitching well you know he was scoreless for three of those innings and he was his most recent
three innings were scoreless so you know and he was only at 67 pitches at the time and with the
bullpen playing the way they've been playing which is you know been a little shaky depending on who
you're looking at but we've seen foe shea struggle we've seen nardy struggle we've seen fairbanks
struggle now we've seen vendor struggle if you have a pitcher that's playing well and put you
in a position to win the ball game you know my thing is let him come out for the fifth the moment
he gives you a reason to take him out of the game that's when you take him out of the game so if
it were up to me I leave paddock in there to go out for the fifth inning you get okay John King
warming up in the bullpen and the moment that paddock allows a walk allows a base hit god forbid a
home run even if it's a base runner they they reach on an air whatever the case may be that's when
you pull paddock paddock's night is done the moment anyone gets on base and he shows any signs
of his night becoming over you know that's what I like to call a reach inning and I'd like to see
Clayton especially early in the season have a little bit more trust in your starting pitching staff
for that reach inning we saw him pull Meyer after only I think it was in the mid to low 70s the
pitch count the other day didn't let him go out for the sixth um we saw this happened with
junks last start as well against St. Louis five inning scoreless only one hit allowed only 56 pitches
and junk got pulled so you know it's a differing philosophy that that McCullough has versus the way
I like to view things but you know you got a pitcher that's rolling you got a bullpen that's been
pretty inconsistent I like to see that pitcher continue to roll and Janssen junk gets an
opportunity to roll tonight as the Marlins get another opportunity to snap this losing streak to
snap this losing streak in Los Angeles especially and get the Marlins back on track so that's
