Hey kids, welcome to Junior's for Jesus.
0:03
Go grab your Bibles, we're going to be digging in
0:06
and learning some really exciting stories.
0:10
We've been studying the minor prophets
0:11
over the last few weeks in a section entitled
0:14
Messages from Heaven.
0:16
And our memory verse is Malachi chapter 3 verse 16.
0:21
then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another
0:24
and the Lord listened and heard them.
0:27
So a book of remembrance was written before them
0:30
for those who feared the Lord
0:32
and who meditate on his name.
0:34
That's Malachi chapter 3 verse 16.
0:39
Monday, about 100 years after Habakkuk and Zefania lived,
0:44
the King of Persia gave the captives from Judah
0:47
permission to return to Jerusalem
0:49
and to rebuild God's temple.
0:52
About 50,000 people, including Haggai and Zachariah
0:56
returned to Judah at that time.
0:58
Ezra chapter 1 verses 1 through 3
1:01
and chapter 2 verses 64 and 65.
1:04
The returned exiles started building with great enthusiasm
1:08
but the older people among them
1:10
remembered the beautiful temple that had been destroyed
1:14
and wept loudly over how different
1:17
the new temple was by comparison.
1:19
Ezra chapter 3 verse 12, Haggai was probably older
1:25
Perhaps he was even among those
1:27
who had seen Solomon's temple before it was destroyed.
1:31
He didn't argue about it being more beautiful
1:34
than the new one that they were building
1:36
but he didn't join the weeping about it.
1:38
When their enemies stopped their work,
1:41
the people started building their own houses
1:44
and planting their own fields.
1:46
Then, of course, God couldn't bless them.
1:49
Their gardens dried up for lack of rain
1:53
and nothing seemed to go right.
1:55
They were forgetting that they needed God's help
1:59
So what message did God send them?
2:02
Haggai chapter 1 verses 2 through 10
2:05
and chapter 2 verse 4.
2:06
Thus speaks the Lord of hosts saying,
2:08
this people says, the time has not come,
2:11
the time that the Lord's house should be built.
2:13
Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet saying,
2:17
is it time for you yourselves to dwell
2:19
in your paneled houses and this temple to lie in ruins?
2:22
Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts,
2:26
You have so much and bring in little.
2:28
You eat but do not have enough.
2:30
You drink but you are not filled with drink.
2:33
You clothes yourselves but no one is warm
2:36
and he who earns wages, earns wages
2:38
to put it into a bag with holes.
2:40
Thus says the Lord of hosts, consider your ways.
2:44
Go up to the mountain and bring wood
2:46
and build the temple that I may take pleasure in it
2:49
and be glorified, says the Lord.
2:52
You looked for much but indeed it came to little
2:55
and when you brought it home I blew it away.
2:58
Why says the Lord of hosts?
2:59
Because of my house that is in ruins
3:02
while every one of you runs to his own house.
3:05
Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew
3:09
and the earth withholds its fruit.
3:11
Yet now be strong, Zerubbable, says the Lord
3:15
and be strong Joshua, son of Jehazadek, the high priest
3:19
and be strong, all you people of the Lord
3:22
says the Lord and work for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts.
3:26
That message of courage started the people building again
3:30
and they kept right on until the temple was finished
3:33
and from the day that they went back to work
3:36
what did God say he would do for them?
3:39
Hagia chapter two verses 18 and 19,
3:41
consider now from this day forward,
3:43
from the 24th day of the ninth month,
3:46
from the day that the foundation of the Lord's temple
3:49
was laid, consider it.
3:51
Is the seed still in the barn?
3:53
As yet the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate
3:57
and the olive tree have not yielded fruit.
3:59
But from this day I will bless you.
4:02
God said that since they had remembered him
4:05
and built his temple he would bless their crops
4:08
and give them a harvest to put in their barns.
4:12
God also said that the temple they were building
4:14
would be more glorious than the one Solomon built.
4:18
Why more than 500 years later Jesus,
4:21
the desire of all nations would come and teach in its courts
4:26
and give it glory by his presence verses seven through nine.
4:33
Do you know that you are the temple of God too
4:36
and with the Holy Spirit living in you,
4:39
your life will be more glorious and honorable.
4:42
You will witness to all who see Jesus in your actions.
4:47
That's 1 Corinthians 3 verse 16.
4:50
Do you not know that you are the temple of God
4:53
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
4:55
