Hey kids, welcome to Junior's for Jesus.
0:03
Go grab your Bibles, we're gonna be digging in
0:06
and learning some really exciting stories.
0:13
Malachi wrote the last book of the Old Testament
0:16
about 100 years after Zachariah wrote his prophecies.
0:20
By that time, a new generation of people
0:23
were living in Judah.
0:25
The people weren't worshiping idols,
0:27
but they weren't truly obeying God either.
0:30
They claimed to be God's people,
0:32
but their religion wasn't much more than certain ceremonies.
0:36
Eight times through Malachi, God tried to reason with him,
0:40
but each time they showed no respect or reverence for him.
0:45
Number one, when God told him, I have loved you,
0:49
Malachi chapter one verse two,
0:51
I have loved you, says the Lord.
0:53
Did you say, in what way have you loved us?
0:57
Was not Esau, Jacob's brother, says the Lord?
1:00
That Jacob I have loved.
1:02
Two, when he said they had despised his name
1:05
and asked why they didn't respect and honor him,
1:08
what was their reply for six?
1:10
A son honors his father and a servant, his master.
1:13
If then I am the father, where is my honor?
1:16
And if I am a master, where is my reverence?
1:19
Says the Lord of hosts.
1:20
To you priests who despise my name, yet you say,
1:24
in what way have we despised your name?
1:26
Number three, when he reminded them
1:28
that they were offering impure sacrifices on his altar,
1:32
what did they ask and what did God tell them?
1:35
Verses seven and eight, you offer defiled food on my altar,
1:39
but say, in what way have we defiled you
1:42
by saying the table of the Lord is contemptible?
1:45
And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice,
1:49
And when you offer the lame and sick, is it not evil?
1:53
Offer it then to your governor.
1:56
Would he be pleased with you?
1:57
Would he accept you favorably?
1:59
Says the Lord of hosts.
2:01
Number four, they were not bringing good,
2:04
perfect offerings to God.
2:06
There was another reason God couldn't accept their offerings.
2:09
When they asked for what reason, what did God tell them?
2:13
Malachi chapter two verse 14, yet you say,
2:17
Because the Lord has been witness between you
2:20
and the wife of your youth,
2:21
with whom you have dealt treacherously.
2:24
Yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
2:28
Number five, while pretending to be sorry for their sins,
2:32
the people weary the Lord with their words.
2:35
What did they ask about that?
2:37
Verse 17, you have weary the Lord with your words,
2:40
and yet you say, in what way have we wearyed him?
2:44
In that you say everyone who does evil
2:46
is good in the sight of the Lord,
2:48
and he delights in them,
2:51
or where is the God of justice?
2:53
Number six, when God urged the people, return to me,
2:58
Malachi three seven, yet from the days of your fathers,
3:01
you have gone away from my ordinances,
3:03
and have not kept them, return to me,
3:06
and I will return to use as the Lord of hosts.
3:09
But you said, in what way shall we return?
3:11
And then they said that God was pleased
3:14
with those who did evil.
3:15
Number seven, when God told the people they were robbing him,
3:19
they acted as if they didn't know
3:21
what he was talking about.
3:23
Verse eight and nine, will a man rob God?
3:26
And yet you have robbed me,
3:27
but you say, in what way have we robbed you?
3:30
In tides and offerings, you were cursed with a curse
3:34
for you have robbed me, even this whole nation.
3:37
Read verses 10 through 12,
3:38
and see what God wanted to do for them.
3:41
Number eight, when God said your words have been harsh against me,
3:45
what was the response of the people?
3:47
Verses 13 and 14, your words have been harsh against me,
3:52
And yet you say, what have we spoken against you?
3:56
You have said, it is useless to serve God.
3:59
What profit is it that we have kept his ordinance
4:02
and that we have walked as mourners before the Lord of hosts?
4:05
Yet God loved them and promised to send a messenger
4:08
before Jesus would come, verse one.
4:11
That was John the Baptist,
4:13
who preached a strong message of repentance
4:16
and turning back to God, like Elijah,
4:19
Mark nine, 11 through 13, and Luke seven, 24 through 28.
4:26
God also promised to send another Elijah
4:29
before the great and dreadful day of the Lord
4:32
to turn people who would listen back to him, Malachi four or five.
4:37
That's the time we're living in right now.
4:39
And that promise is being fulfilled.
4:41
Now, as God's messengers teach, like Elijah did,
