Mexico Invites Spain's King to World Cup

Mexico has invited Spain's King Felipe VI to the opening match of the 2026 World Cup.

President Claudia Scheinbaum shared the news during a press conference on Thursday.

The invitation came from Mexico's government representative for the tournament, Gabriela

Kuevas.

She sent invites to leaders from every country where Mexico has diplomatic ties, including

the Spanish King.

This move follows reports in Spanish media about the outreach.

The timing stands out after the King recently spoke about abuses during Spain's colonial

rule over Mexico and much of Latin America from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Those errors involve forced labor and violence against indigenous people.

Scheinbaum had skipped inviting the King to her own inauguration last year because he would

not apologize for that history.

His recent words came soon after a U.S. official criticized Western allies for dwelling too

much on past guilt.

Scheinbaum called the King's remarks a step toward reconciliation, though she said they

fell short of what Mexico hoped for.
